Cozy up with "What Happens in Brighton," a heartwarming Regency and Victorian collection featuring eight exclusive, never-before-published stories from beloved authors, including Anna Bradley, Tracy Brogan, Kerrigan Byrne, Gayle Callen, Christy Carlyle, Sofie Darling, Eileen Dreyer, Barbara Russell, and Misty Urban. Don't miss out—just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Anna Bradley writes Regency and Georgian historical romance with heat, heart, and happily-ever-afters. Her books have received starred reviews from Publisher’s Weekly, and Library Journal, and her debut novel won the Romantic Times’ award for Best First Historical.
Anna is originally from New England, but now makes her home in Oregon, where she lives with her family, an overgrown English garden and a menagerie of wayward pets. If she isn’t writing, she’s probably hiding in a corner reading, chasing the dog, or herding the cats. Find Anna on the web at www.annabradley.net
Tropes: various 3.5 rounded up, but this was hard to rate. I liked this collection for the most part; didn't love it. This is my general overview.
The best entry by far to me was Kerrigan Byrne's "Flirting With Disaster", which is part of the Goode Girls series. She isn't my favorite author (sometimes her books have been too angst-driven for me) but this novellla is a beautifully written F/F romance that really got me emotionally. Don't skip over it if you don't usually read sapphic. This is special. 5 stars.
My 2nd favorite novella was Tracy Brogan's "Winner Takes All." I've previously read a book by her and think she's an underrated writer. She does a terrific job as usual here with world building, dialog, and plotting (loved the clever ending). Plus the MC's have a delightful rapport. The storyline is only told from MFC's POV but it's easy to see why MMC's isn't included--it would have given away the fun twists. 4.5 stars.
Eileen Dryer's "A Day at the Beach" is intelligently written and tense, with a lot of emotional depth for a novella, but because it's second chance I needed more backstory in order to truly enjoy the HEA. What exactly were the MC's like six years ago? What was their first meeting like? The early stage of their marriage? MMC mentions knowing MFC since she was a child. Why, then, was he so quick to believe that she had been the villain? I did love the relationship between MFC and MMC's grandmother, plus the characterization of the young son. I've previously read a book by the author and would read more. 4.25 stars.
Barbara Russell's "A Night You Won't Remember" is fun, with MC's who have terrific chemistry. It's probably the steamest novella of the bunch and both MMC and MFC are likable, especially MMC. I liked the humor between MFC and her mom. Wasn't as keen on the plot, though. The idea of a friend giving a young woman a drug that makes her black out for an entire night is ooky, even if it's played for laughs. 4 stars.
The entries by Christy Carlyle and Sofie Darling, both authors I typically enjoy, were OK, but not their best work. I'd give them each 3.5 stars.
Gayle Callen is a new author to me, and while her entry is fine, it was a bit too emotionally heavy at times and then too easily resolved. 3.25 stars.
I couldn't really get into Misty Urban's novella, "What Happens in Hedone." I haven't read much by her in the past and the characters and plot just didn't draw me in, although the writing style was fine. 3 stars.
The most disappointing entry was Anna Bradley's "Queen of Hearts." I really like her as a writer, and this had a promising set-up and great chemistry between the MC's. I was floored, however, that their entire courtship (the meat of the romance) was skipped over to the epilogue. I'm not sure if this was originally a short book that the author edited heavily to fit in the anthology? 2.5 stars.
This is an eclectic collection of heartwarming stories each with a satisfying HEA. The common theme here is Brighton setting. One thing that stood out for me throughout is the departure from the common to this era nobility theme and this anthology is full of engaging stories of people of varying walks of life. Several favorite authors for me here (Sofie Darling, Kerrigan Byrne) and some new to me that I will be looking to read more of. This has a theme for every trope - enemies to lovers, marriage in trouble, forbidden desire, slow burn, insta-love. Not a single story that was not a joy to read!
Thanks to NetGalley and Oliver Heber Books for this delightful advanced read!
Charlotte “Lottie” Bathurst takes her brother to Brighton for his recovery. While out on a stroll, she happens upon a naked man on the beach. Bad luck strikes when Lottie discovers their money is stolen. She knows gambling is the only way to recoup their losses quickly. Lottie never expected to find the stranger she met on the beach at the gaming establishment. Can Lottie win the money needed to remain in Brighton? Or will her handsome stranger thwart her attempt? Mr. Armitage Hart owns the most popular gaming houses in Brighton. During his daily swim, he encounters a red-headed woman. Armitage is unable to forget about his mysterious lady. He searches the town in hopes of finding her again without luck. Fate smiles upon him when she comes into his establishment in disguise. Will Armitage uncover her identity? And will he discover why she is intent on gambling? I am new to Anna Bradley’s works. So, I am uncertain if this novella belongs to any of her existing series. The story’s ending felt rushed. I would have liked to see Lottie and Armitage get to know each other, and to witness the progress of their romance. I disliked how it went from her being caught, then the next chapter is the epilogue with them already married.
WINNER TAKES ALL Tracy Brogan https://www.tracybrogan.com/ Rating: 4 Mary O’Sullivan and her troupe-mates arrive in Brighton to put on a show. At the rail station, she picks the pocket of an obnoxious gentleman. Inside his wallet, Mary finds cash and an invitation to an exclusive poker tournament. She assumes the role of a wealthy American heiress to gain entry to the event. There is one man who could expose Mary’s deception. Will Mary be able to win the competition? Or will James thwart her? James Pendleton is a contestant in the elite poker tournament. He spots Mary at the hotel where the competition is to take place. As the tourney advances, James suspects Mary is not who she claims to be. When his suspicions prove correct, he invites her to be his partner. Will James expose Mary’s fraudulent identity? Or will he forfeit his own chance of winning for her? Tracy Brogan is another new author to me. I am not sure if WINNER TAKES ALL belongs to any of her series or stands alone. I only have one small nitpick. It feels as though the story was mostly told from Mary’s point of view. I would have liked more scenes from James’ POV to get a feel for his character.
FLIRTING WITH DISASTER Kerrigan Byrne Rating: 4
Emmaline “Emma” Goode arrives in Brighton to attend her brother’s wedding. She knows he is only doing so to help restore their family’s reputation. Emma realizes she is in love with one of the wedding guests, the beautiful French Duchesse de la Coeur. She has been taught that such love is an abomination. But is it truly? Can Emma accept her feelings for Amelie? And what lengths will she take to be with her? Amelie Beauchamp is a hunted duchess. She travels abroad to evade her evil stepson’s schemes and manipulations. Amelie understands that Emmaline is at war with herself. She cannot ignore the attraction blooming between them. Nor does she intend to. Can Amelie help Emma come to terms with herself and her feelings? Or will her stepson’s interference destroy any possibility between them? My heart went out to Emmaline. She has been battling her differences in silence for a long time. I like how Emma secretly commiserates with her brother, Emmett. She has known about her brother’s sexual orientation and the inner turmoil that brings. In my eyes, the ultimate hero is Bainbridge. He came to Emma’s aid when she needed it the most. I adore how Bainbridge helped Emma understand that she is not alone. That there are others out there like her. And that Emma should not be ashamed of her differences or the feelings that she feels. Secretly, I am hoping that Bainbridge becomes Emmett’s happily-ever-after. FLIRTING WITH DISASTER is the sixth installment in Kerrigan Byrne’s historical romance series, GOODE GIRLS. I have been a fan of this author for a long time, since around 2015 with THE HIGHWAYMAN. She and another author are the reason that I picked up this anthology. Of course, I started with Bryne’s short story before diving into the rest of the book. I grinned when I discovered FWD is part of her GOODE GIRLS series. I truly missed this series! FLIRTING WITH DISASTER is my second or third F/F romance. I adore Bryne for writing one in this historical setting. It is something I do not generally see in this genre (or else I just never noticed). However, it is not for me. My kink leans more towards M/M pairings – my manga, anime, and manhwa collection will attest to this.
THE WAY WE WERE Gayle Callen
Lucy Lawton arrives in Brighton to confront her husband on some rumors she heard. She catches him walking arm-in-arm with an unknown woman. Lucy learns that Reggie’s connection with the lady is duty-bound and platonic. She remains persistent in maintaining an emotional distance from him. When the young lady asks for her assistance, Lucy reluctantly agrees. Can Lucy finally put the grief of losing a child behind her? Will she and Reggie resolve their differences? Captain Reginald “Reggie” Lawton returns from a one-year stint in India. He escorts his late commanding officer’s daughter to Brighton to meet her fiancé. Reggie is delighted to be reunited with his wife. However, Lucy does not seem to feel the same. Reggie decides to try to rekindle their love. Can he and Lucy finally move past their shared trauma? Or is their marriage truly doomed? I empathize with both Lucy and Reggie. They both share a devastating trauma. And they each mourned and dealt with it differently. I cannot imagine the pain both went through. I understand how Lucy found solace in her charity work. And my heart went out to Reggie. He did not know how to console his wife while dealing with his own pain. I do like that he found a medium to express that pain, and it helped him come to terms with it. Gayle Callen is another new-to-me author. So, I am uncertain if THE WAY WE WERE belongs to any of her prior series. Second chance romances are my least favorite trope. They always make me feel cheated. I prefer seeing the couple fall in love, the path that takes them there, etc. This story hits a little different than most second-chance stories. Reggie did not want to leave Lucy, especially during an emotionally challenging time. However, his duties as an army officer left him no choice.
THE BRIDE CHASE Christy Carlyle Rating: 4 Philippa “Pip” Morgan flees to Brighton to avoid an arrange marriage. She cannot forget the night spent in the garden with her brother’s best friend. Pip plans to travel abroad until she reaches the age of majority. She never expected her brother to send Atlas Ballentine to retrieve her. Can Philippa convince Atlas to let her go? Or will he break her heart for a second time? Atlas Ballentine, Viscount Stonefield, intends to marry a wealthy heiress. His intentions are disrupted when his friend asks for his help in locating his missing sister. Atlas regrets how he avoided Pip after their romantic encounter in the gardens. When he finds her in Brighton, Atlas realizes how he truly feels for Philippa. Can Atlas convince Pip to marry him instead? I feel that there was not enough in the story for me to connect with either Atlas or Pip. Yeah, I applaud Pip’s initiative on escaping her unwanted arranged marriage. She is not the kind of woman to meekly do as bid when there is no love in the union. And I love how Atlas fought for Pip’s right to choose her spouse, instead of siding with his friend. I also like how he finally realizes his feelings when she threatens to travel abroad. This author is not new to me. I have only read one other book by Christy Carlyle (and that is THE DUKE AND LADY SCANDAL, book one in PRINCES OF LONDON series). I am not familiar enough with this author’s works to know if this title belongs to any series.
TILLY AND THE UNREFORMED RAKE Sofie Darling Rating: 4 Miss Tilly Birdwell works as a lady’s maid. She dreams of one day opening a shop to assist women with their fashion needs. One night in Brighton, Tilly takes her mistress’s place at a masquerade and enters in a game of chance. She encounters a handsome lord who desperately wants the ring that she won. Tilly agrees to relinquish it, only if he performs three noble acts. She never expected to fall for the man. Will Tilly ever achieve her dream? Or will something else take its place? Lord Rhys Osborne is the third son of an earl. He has given up his rakish lifestyle after losing his father’s signet ring in a wager. Rhys attends a masquerade with the intention of reclaiming it from the man who won it dishonestly. However, he never anticipated a woman like Tilly to join the game and winning it. When Rhys approaches her about the ring, she sets certain conditions before its return. Will Rhys complete his three noble deeds? Will the ring return to his father? I did not care too much for Tilly at the beginning of the book. For a woman who came from the lower class, she behaved a bit uppity for my tastes. Tilly said and did whatever she pleased, even around aristocrats. Her behavior, especially around Rhys, rubbed me wrong. What I do like about Tilly is how she saw Rhys’ goodness. She knew it was there. He just needed a nudge to act on it. Rhys earned my respect from the start. He anxiously wants to correct the one major wrong that he has committed. Losing his father’s signet ring gave Rhys the impetus to change his life around. What I love the most about Rhys is how he kept himself from relapsing back to old habits. He understands that he will never be free of the cravings for booze and gambling. Rhys just found a way to withstand it. TILLY AND THE UNREFORMED RAKE belong to Sofie Darling’s historical romance series, SHADOWS AND SILK. Unfortunately, I am unfamiliar with this series. I have read this author’s other two series. After looking through her backlog, I deduce Tilly’s employer is the heroine from book four, TO WIN A WICKED LORD.
A DAY AT THE BEACH Eileen Dreyer Rating: 4
Phillip Long, Earl of Everleigh, wants to reclaim his birthright. He believes his wife is responsible for his conscription into the navy. After finishing his service, Phillip travels to Brighton to confront Eleanor. He realizes the information may not be true. And his wife has another surprise for him: Phillip has a son. Will Phillip discover the true culprit behind his abduction? Lady Eleanor Long struggles to provide for her son and grandmother-in-law. She encounters a man bearing a striking resemblance to her late husband. When that same man shows up at her doorstep, Eleanor learns that he truly is her spouse. She is stunned that Phillip believes she had something to do with his conscription. Is he still the man Eleanor married six years ago? Eileen Dreyer is another new-to-me author. I am uncertain if this title belongs to any of her series. I found that I could not really connect with either Eleanor or Phillip. This tends to be the major downside with novellas. The story, along with the resolution, felt a tad rushed. I did empathize with Phillip and Eleanor’s plight. They were both deceived by a greedy relative. And I admire Eleanor’s decision to take care of her grandmother-in-law. I like the rapport she and the elderly lady have.
A NIGHT YOU WON’T REMEMBER Barbara Russell Rating: 4.5
Lady Esther despairs over not having a single suitor. Her mother accepts an invitation to Brighton in hopes of encouraging a connection with a particular duke. A night out leaves Esther with no recollection of what happened. She hopes, by retracing her steps, she can help Alexander find his fencing foil. The impromptu scavenger hunt allows Esther to grow closer to him. Will she find Alexander’s foil before the big competition? Alexander, the Duke of Richmond, is a renowned fencer known as “The Great”. He grows weary of mothers trying to foist their eligible daughters at him. Alexander finds himself intrigued when he meets Esther – she is unlike any other debutantes he has met. Their paths cross once more in Brighton, where an unusual treasure hunt ensues. Will Alexander’s adventure with Esther lead to more than just finding his foil? What I like about Esther and Alexander are their passions. Esther with cricket – an unusual hobby for a noblewoman. And Alexander with fencing. I adore how Alexander encourages Esther to keep pursuing the things she likes and to be herself. He saw nothing wrong with her interests. And I especially love how Esther reciprocates and tells him not to give up on fencing. She knew that fencing would help Alex unwind from his ducal duties. This is my first time reading any of Barbara Russell’s works. I do not know if A NIGHT YOU WON’T REMEMBER belongs to any of the author’s series. I simply adore this story! It is my favorite story in this anthology, thus far! I practically gobbled it up! It does make me wonder if Minnie, Esther’s friend, has a story.
WHAT HAPPENS IN HEDONE Misty Urban Rating: 3
Jay Burnham is the son of a baron. He chooses to follow his father’s profession in the brick-making industry. Jay meets two fascinating women in Brighton – one at the beach and another at a pleasure house. He is unaware that they are the same person. On discovering her identity, Jay learns that she is engaged to his friend. Will Jay be able to give Effie up? Or will he find a way to be with her? Iphigenia “Effie” Stanier intends to have one final summer of freedom before her upcoming marriage. During the evenings, she goes by the alias Lady Erato and stages historical tableaux at a pleasure club. Effie never expected to meet someone like Jay – a man she cannot have. She asks for one pleasurable evening with him before entering a loveless marriage. Which man will Effie ultimately choose? Misty Urban is another new-to-me author. I am uncertain if it is a standalone or if it belongs to a series. I had a rough time getting into this story. I could not connect with the characters or immerse myself in the premises. It is just not for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this anthology of nine romance novellas set in the 19th century (Regency, William IV era and Victorian) in Brighton. I already knew most of the authors before, but these stories were new to me. They are all very well written, some are poignant, others funny and lighthearted, have different levels of steam (from sweet and clean to medium spice) and all kinds of personalities. They bring together working heroines, strong ladies die aus gesellschaftlichen restrictions ausbrechen, die auf der Flucht sind, strong women, wallflowers, working class and cinnamon roll heroes, rakes, reserved dukes and misfits of the ton, and reunite married couples who were separated by pain, grief and betrayal. The anthology offers a selection of favorite tropes such as
I really enjoyed this anthology of nine romance novellas set in 19th-century Brighton (the Regency period, the reign of William IV and the Victorian era). I was already familiar with most of the authors, but these stories were new to me. They are all very well written, some are moving, others funny and light-hearted, with varying degrees of steam (from sweet and clean to moderately spicy) and all kinds of characters. The anthology offers a selection of popular themes such as
- Strangers to lovers - Working class romance - Rivals to allies to lovers - Hidden identities - Instalove - Forbidden love - Troubled marriage - Second chance - Tortured leads - Best friend’s sister, - Lady on the run/in hiding - Masquerade - Redemption arc - And more
All in all, an enjoyable selection of different romances that will keep you hooked and immerse you in the magic of 19th-century English seaside life.
I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.
ABOUT THE STORIES:
QUEEN OF HEARTS BY ANNA BRADLEY
A nice, sweet and clean Regency romance with strangers-to-lovers and working-class tropes, a funny meet-cute and very likeable protagonists, featuring seamstress Charlotte Bathurst, who travels to Brighton with her sick brother for a cure, but is robbed shortly after her arrival and now makes up for her losses in Armitage Hart's gambling club with her talent for card counting. Hart is a man she has already met under unusual circumstances and whom she finds attractive...
WINNER TAKES ALL BY TRACY BROGAN
A very entertaining Victorian romance with rivals to allies to lovers and hidden identities tropes, lots of humor and twists, a touch of suspense, a fade-out love scene and very likable main and secondary characters that features Mary O'Sullivan, an actress and pickpocket in a travelling theatre group, who tries to con her way into an exclusive poker tournament to use the prize money to make her dream of a stage career in New York come true and falls head over heels for her rival at the tournament James Pendleton, who also has his secrets...
FLIRTING WITH DISASTER BY KERRIGAN BYRNE
A poignant Sapphic Regency romance that tells the story of a young woman experiencing her sexual awakening at a time when same-sex relationships were forbidden and dangerous, and pretence and restraint were the order of the day. The plot is very well written, emotional and with a little spice. The only thing I felt was missing at the end was what happened to Emmaline's brother and Lord Bainbridge (my favorite character in this novella). Emmaline Goode always had the feeling that she didn't fit into the world she was born into. She's the steady and practical one in her family, but socially awkward and too direct. When she comes to Brighton for her brother Emmett's, Baron Cresthaven, wedding, she meets poised, sophisticated, confident and slightly scandalous Amélie, Duchesse De La Coeur, to whom she is immediately attracted. But the conventions and restraints of society do not allow for a relationship, and Emmaline feels even more like an outsider until her brother's friend, Lord Bainbridge, opens her eyes to the fact that her feelings are not unnatural, that she is not alone and that there are other ways...
THE WAY WE WERE BY GAYLE CALLEN
A touching Victorian second chance romance, with a captivating plot, lovable characters, emotion and light steam, in which an estranged married couple must overcome misunderstandings, grief, bitterness and fear. Lucy Lawton felt abandoned by her husband, when he left on a mission to India shortly after the loss of their daughter. When Lucy hears rumors that Reggie has been back from his mission for weeks and has allegedly been seen with another woman in Brighton, she travels there to propose a marriage of separate lives, like other women in her charity association. Captain Reginald Lawton regrets leaving his wife alone in her grief and leaves no stone unturned in his efforts to win her back...
THE BRIDE CHASE BY CHRISTY CARLYLE
An enjoyable Victorian love story with a well-written plot, very likable characters, emotion and a little spice, that features a lady in hiding from an unwanted marriage and her brother's best friend is set to marry another woman. When her brother Douglas wants to marry her off to a man three times her age in order to replenish the family coffers, Philippa Morgan absconds to Brighton, but is soon tracked down by her brother's best friend, Atlas Ballentine, Viscount Stonefield, with whom she has long been in love. Atlas reciprocates her feelings, but due to his own financial situation, he must marry a woman with a large dowry...
TILLY AND THE UNREFORMED RAKE BY SOFIE DARLING
An enjoyable slow-burning strangers-to-lovers romance set during the reign of William IV, with a very well-written plot, additional class disparity and redemption arc tropes, emotion, LOL moments and spice. At a masquerade in Brighton, former spendthrift and rake Lord Rhys Osborne attempts to win back his father's signet ring, which he lost to Lord Felix Mortimer a year ago. Instead, however, the ring goes to a strange young woman. Former prostitute and now Lady Percival's lady’s maid Tilly Birdwell wants to enjoy a carefree evening and sneaks into the masked ball with a discarded invitation from her employer and friend. There she wins a signet ring from her former lover Lord Felix and flees. By chance, Tilly and Rhys' paths cross weeks later in London, and Rhys tries to convince her to give him the ring. But Tilly doesn't want to make it that easy for the notorious waster; first Rhys has to perform three good deeds. The more time Rhys spends with the vivacious young woman, the clearer it becomes to him that it is no longer just about the ring, but also about the respect of this inspiring woman who lives her life with purpose and intention…
A DAY AT THE BEACH BY EILEEN DREYER
An gripping second chance at love romance, in which a married couple separated by violence and betrayal find their way back to each other. The plot is very well written, emotional, with a touch of drama and suspense, slightly steamy and featuring very likable characters. Years ago, Lady Eleanor Anne Winchell Long's husband Phillip, Earl of Everleigh, died in a ship fire in Brighton. Since then, she has had to fight with his relatives over her husband's inheritance and her son's position. But during a recent visit to Brighton, she meets a strange man who claims to be her late husband, who was allegedly gang-pressed at her command...
A NIGHT YOU WON‘T REMEMBER BY BARBARA RUSSELL
An unusual Victorian romance in Barbara Russell's typical style, in which the heroine wants to free herself from social norms and gets into trouble in the process. The plot is very well written, fast-paced, action-packed and exciting, full of emotion, a touch of mystery and suspense, a little spice and very likable protagonists who are perfectly matched. Wallflower Lady Esther prefers playing cricket to attending social events, but her ambitious mother wants her to marry Alexander, Duke of Richmond, against her will. To achieve this, Esther must behave like her prim and proper friend Minnie, who is courted by suitors. At a garden party, Esther meets a reserved man who accepts her for who she is, and they become friends without Esther knowing that he is in fact the sought-after Duke. When Alexander leaves for a fencing tournament in Brighton, Esther and her mother travel to Brighton to accompany Minnie and her grandmother. One night, Esther follows Minnie to a nightclub and discovers that she is not the paragon everyone thinks she is. Esther also wants to break out of her restrained and conventional life, but this night ends in disaster...
WHAT HAPPENS IN HEDONE BY MISTY URBAN
A very enjoyable instalove, hidden identity romance, set in the time of William IV and linked to the novel "The Mad Baron's Bride" by the same author. The plot is very well written, full of emotion, a few twists and turns, funny moments, a little spice and very likable characters. Iphigenia "Effie" Stanier is soon to marry her cousin, but until her parents arrive in Brighton, she wants to enjoy her life. During the day, she visits the beach and continues her studies in marine biology. At night, she acts in sensual tableaux in her friend's pleasure club as her alter ego, Lady Erato. Jay Burnham lives between two worlds and has to prove himself in each. On the one hand, he is a tradesman who makes bricks, on the other, he is the heir to a baron. On a walk in Brighton, he meets Effie and immediately feels a deep connection to her. However, when he visits a pleasure club in the evening, he feels attracted to Lady Erato, one of the actresses, without realising that she and Effie are one and the same...
What Happens in Brighton is a delightful anthology of stories that whisks readers away to the charming seaside town of Brighton, where every tale feels like its own little adventure. I loved how the collection blends a variety of genres and writing styles, creating a vibrant mix of voices that keeps the experience fresh and engaging.
Each story offers something unique—moments to laugh, to cry, and to leave the world feeling just a little lighter. The anthology celebrates themes of self-discovery, acceptance, and the enduring power of love, reminding us that being seen for who we truly are is a triumph in itself.
As with any anthology, some stories will stand out as favorites while others may resonate less, but overall, this collection is thoroughly enjoyable. Every story has its own endearing charm, making What Happens in Brighton a memorable read.
Queen of Hearts - Anna Bradley
This charming tale sweeps readers into a whimsical and heartwarming adventure, beginning with an unforgettable runaway parasol scene and an unfortunate naked gentleman that sets the tone for the fun to come. Seamstress Charlotte “Lottie” Bathurst dreams of giving her ailing brother the healing experience of a seaside holiday in Brighton.
After saving for months to afford two precious weeks, disaster strikes when they are robbed. Determined not to cut their trip short, Lottie hatches a daring plan: disguised as a young man, she ventures into Hart’s Ace, a bustling gaming establishment, hoping to win back their lost funds. There, she catches the keen eye of the intriguing owner, Armitage Hart, and sparks quickly fly.
Filled with humor, romance, and a dash of daring, this story is a delightful escape that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Winner Takes All - Tracy Brogan
Mary O’Sullivan, an Irish actor and occasional thief, is a spirited member of the Paddington Players. In this charming short story from the anthology, she slips into the role of an American heiress to compete in a high-stakes poker tournament, hoping to claim the £500 prize. Amid the playful deception and the thrill of the tournament, she crosses paths with James Murphy, the illegitimate son of Lord Pendleton. What follows is a lively tale of clever schemes, a dash of romance, and the delightful unpredictability of love found in the most unexpected places.
Flirting With Disaster - Kerrigan Byrne
Emmaline “Emma” Goode travels with her family to Brighton for her brother Emmett’s wedding, where she embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Amid the celebrations, Emma meets Amelie, Duchess de la Coeur, and finally understands why she has never felt drawn to any of the men she has met—she is awakening to her attraction to women. This heartfelt story captures the beauty of embracing one’s true self, the warmth of family support, and the courage to live authentically despite society’s expectations.
The Way We Were - Gayle Callen
After the devastating loss of their child, she and Captain Reginald “Reggie” Lawton had been living apart for a year, the distance filled with grief and silence. Expecting him to return to England in two weeks, Lucy Lawton is stunned to learn he has already arrived—and even more shocked to hear whispers that he was seen with another woman on his arm.
Determined to confront him and claim her independence, Lucy travels to Brighton, ready to announce her intent to live separate lives. But the man she finds there is not the cold, unfaithful husband she feared. Reggie has a legitimate reason for his mysterious companion, and he refuses to let their marriage end in sorrow and misunderstanding.
As the sea winds sweep over Brighton’s shores, the couple navigates the depths of their shared grief, rediscovering the love they once believed was lost. Through honesty, forgiveness, and tender moments, Lucy and Reggie find the courage to reconcile and step into a new chapter together.
The Bride Chase - Christy Carlyle
Philippa Morgan escapes the clutches of an unwanted marriage, fleeing from the future her brother has arranged—a union with a much older man she simply cannot accept. But fate twists cruelly when her brother sends none other than Atlas Ballantine, Viscount Stonefield—his best friend and the man Philippa secretly loves—to track her down and bring her home. Their unexpected reunion sparks a series of events that will forever change the course of their lives. This short novella swept me up from the very first page and held me captive until the last, delivering a romantic and heartfelt adventure I couldn’t put down.
Tilly & the Reformed Rake - Sofie Darling
This was hands-down my favorite story in the entire anthology! Tilly Birdwell, a ladies maid like no other, instantly captured my heart. She’s clever, spirited, and a true breath of fresh air—I felt connected to her from the very first page.
Then there’s Rhys, the ultimate reformed rake. On a daring mission to reclaim a treasured family heirloom he recklessly lost in a card game, he never anticipates that Tilly will outplay him and win his father’s signet ring. What follows is pure delight: Tilly challenges him to complete three noble deeds, and with every test, her influence pushes him to grow, transforming him into a man worthy of admiration.
This enchanting tale hooked me from start to finish—I laughed, swooned, and didn’t want it to end!
A Day at the Beach - Eileen Dreyer
After six long years, Phillip Long, the Earl of Everleigh, finally returns home after having been sold to a press-gang—an act he believes was orchestrated by his own wife. Seeking answers, he confronts Eleanor Long, only to discover she doesn’t even recognize him. Eleanor, who had mourned her husband deeply, is shocked to see him alive. Her shock turns to devastation when Phillip accuses her of having him abducted and questions whether their son is truly his.
As the two navigate their painful reunion, they slowly uncover the truth of what really happened six years ago. Amid the accusations and heartbreak, the love they once shared begins to resurface. Their journey to reconciliation is both emotional and heartwarming, making this a beautifully told story of love, loss, and redemption. It was truly a touching read and felt like the perfect gift for any reader who enjoys heartfelt historical romance.
A Night You Won’t Remember - Barbara Russell
Lady Esther’s lively misadventures begin when she accidentally meets Alexander, the Duke of Richmond, and mistakes him for someone else. Their unexpected friendship blossoms as Esther, eager to emulate her flirtatious friend Minnie, seeks a more daring social life. When she secretly follows Minnie to a risqué club and drinks a mysterious concoction, Esther experiences a wild, unforgettable—or rather, entirely forgotten—night.
In the chaos, she unknowingly steals Alexander’s prized fencing foil and, unable to locate it later, embarks on a series of amusing escapades with him to find it. As their time together grows, so does Alexander’s affection for the charmingly hapless Esther. The romantic twist comes when she realizes he is the very duke her mother has been urging her to consider all along. In the end, love triumphs, and it seems mother really did know best.
This playful mix of humor, romance, and mistaken identity makes for an enchanting and lighthearted read.

Seaside Scandals and Second Chances Brighton provides the perfect seaside backdrop for this collection of historical romances, where chance encounters, secrets, and second chances unfold along the shore. I always enjoy anthologies for the variety they offer, and this collection brings a wide range of tones and tropes to its seaside setting. Each story offers a different glimpse into love and resilience, from lighthearted adventures to more emotional journeys. Here’s a look at the stories that make up this anthology. Queen of Hearts by Anna Bradley Her parasol assaults him — an inauspicious beginning… or was it? Lottie is in Brighton so her brother can heal, but when her funds are stolen, she turns to gambling at Armitage Hart’s establishment. Disguised as a man, she never expects the gentleman she accidentally attacked to be the owner of the gaming den. Armitage is no fool and quickly realizes Lottie is not what she appears — not to mention she seems to be counting cards. Is she cheating, or simply very clever? What happens when Armitage discovers the truth? This story was delightfully entertaining. Winner Takes All by Tracy Brogan Mary, an actress, begins her adventure by stealing the wallet of a man who was unkind to a porter, then decides to use the money to enter a private gambling tournament. There she meets James, and sparks fly instantly. But what happens when he discovers she is not the daughter of a wealthy American? James has secrets of his own. How will their story end? This was an entertaining story that put a smile on my face. Flirting With Disaster by Kerrigan Byrne Emma must come to terms with being in love with Amélie at a time when such feelings were completely unacceptable. Meeting a man who loves other men helps her realize she is not alone or monstrous, but obstacles remain — especially Amélie’s stepson, who has plans of his own. Romance with a dash of suspense makes this an entertaining tale. The Way We Were by Gayle Callen Lucy and Reggie’s marriage is on the rocks after he abandoned her when she needed him most. Yes, it was for military duty he could not avoid, but why were his letters so cold? And what about the rumors of another woman? Can Lucy and Reggie save their marriage? This is a story of misunderstandings, honest communication, hope, and second chances. The Bride Chase by Christy Carlyle Philippa flees her brother’s scheme to marry her off to a man old enough to be her grandfather to repair the family fortune. Her brother enlists his best friend Atlas to help find her — unaware of the tension between Atlas and Philippa. There were stolen kisses and avoidance, but what happens when he finally catches up with her? Will Atlas choose wealth or love? A delightfully entertaining short story. Tilly and the Unreformed Rake by Sofie Darling Tilly, a lady’s maid, attends a masquerade where she meets Rhys, who has one goal: retrieve his father’s signet ring lost in a card game. He never expected Tilly to win it herself. To get it back, he must complete three good deeds — and neither expected love to enter the picture. Will Rhys prove he is truly reformed? What happens when a nobleman falls for a lady’s maid? I really enjoyed this one. A Day at the Beach by Eileen Dreyer Phillip returns from the dead after six long years. When he encounters his wife, she does not recognize him — why would she, when she believed him gone forever? Told his wife arranged his abduction, Phillip returns filled with anger and suspicion, believing she moved on with another man. What is the truth, and can Eleanor and Phillip rediscover their love? I loved this story of love, loss, and second chances. A Night You Won’t Remember by Barbara Russell Esther’s mother wants her to catch a duke and sends her searching with entirely the wrong description, leading Esther into a maze instead. The duke finds her, neither knowing the other’s identity, and a friendship begins. A daring adventure, a questionable drink, and a stolen fencing foil lead to scandal and chaos. Can Esther survive the night, and will Alexander forgive her? A unique, lighthearted story I thoroughly enjoyed. What Happens in Hedone by Misty Urban Effie and Jay meet at the beach, and he is immediately captivated. Later, he encounters a mysterious woman at a pleasure club, never realizing they are one and the same. Effie is destined to marry her cousin, but what happens when identities are revealed and truths come to light? This anthology offers a wide variety of stories connected by the seaside setting of Brighton, each bringing its own blend of romance, conflict, and personal discovery. From second chances and misunderstandings to daring adventures and heartfelt reunions, the collection showcases different paths to love while capturing the charm and intrigue of a seaside escape. With a mix of tones and tropes, historical romance readers will find plenty to enjoy in this collection.
Set in the enchanting seaside town of Brighton, England, where the sun kisses the shore and dreams linger in the salty breeze, a vibrant tapestry of souls will Vicar’s daughters and country maidens striving to ascend the social ladder, widows daring to seek a second chance at joy, and heartbroken singles clinging to the fragile hope of love. I enjoyed this collection a lot, but the following novellas really stuck out to me:
Queen of Hearts by Anna Bradley – 4 stars: A bit of a love at first sight trope – To give her ailing brother a chance to take treatments in Brighton, seamstress Charlotte “Lottie” Bathurst, scrims and saves to let them stay for two weeks, but when they are robbed, she will either have to cut the visit short or gamble to recoup the lost funds. She dresses up as a young man and goes to Hart’s Ace, catching the notice of the owner Armitage Hart.
The Way We Were by Gayle Callen – 5 stars: A second-chance romance after losing a child – This was a very emotional story, Lucy Lawton and her husband Captain Reginald “Reggie” Lawton have been separated for a year, she doesn’t expect him back for two weeks, but learns he is already in England and was seen with another woman on his arm! Lucy goes to Brighton to confront him and to tell him she wants to lead separate lives. Only to learn who the woman really is and that her husband isn’t willing to give up on their marriage.
A Day at the Beach by Eileen Dreyer – 4.5 stars: Another second chance romance – After 6 long years, Phillip Long, the Earl of Everleigh has returned after being sold to a press-gang by his wife. He is back and wants answers, but what he finds is more questions! Eleanor Long, grieved deeply for her husband, and has stayed in England to protect Everleigh’s estate for their son – but it has been a fight with his grasping cousin. She is shocked when Phillip returns and accuses her of having him press-ganged and makes other accusations. Can they find the truth and their way back to each other?
A Night You Won’t Remember by Barbara Russell – 4 stars: After Lady Esther accidentally meets Alexander, the Duke of Richmond and mistakes him for someone else, they form a friendship. Later she is shocked to learn that he is the duke her mother has been trying to set up with! She hates to admit it, but she likes him and when the chance to see him again in Brighton comes up, she is excited to see him again. But a wild night with her social rival may ruin any chance she has with Alexander, when she takes his prized fencing foil and can’t remember what she did with it!
This anthology contains nine never-before-published novellas, some with connections to the author’s own series and with several different tropes, ensuring that there is really something for everyone in this collection! I highly recommend this collection and will definitely be looking up some of these author’s backlists!
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that I requested and was provided to me by the publisher/author. All opinions in this review are my own. *
What Happens in Brighton is a delightful Regency and Victorian romance collection that captures the charm, contradictions, and quiet rebellions of seaside society. Set against the glittering promenades and shadowy corners of Brighton, these stories explore second chances, hidden identities, and class differences in an attempt to find love. Each novella offers a distinct tone and trope, yet together they form a cohesive and engaging anthology. • Queen of Hearts (Anna Bradley) is a sweet, clean Regency romance with a clever working-class heroine, an amusing meet-cute, and a charming strangers-to-lovers arc that makes excellent use of Brighton’s gambling scene. A favourite author for me. • Winner Takes All (Tracy Brogan) brings lively Victorian energy with rivals-to-lovers tension, hidden identities, and a touch of suspense. The humour and twists keep the story moving, and the ambitious heroine is especially memorable. • Flirting with Disaster (Kerrigan Byrne) is a emotionally rich sapphic Regency romance that sensitively explores forbidden desire and self-acceptance. Not what I quite expected. • The Way We Were (Gayle Callen) delivers a heartfelt second-chance Victorian romance, full of regret and healing, as an estranged couple confronts grief and misunderstandings to rediscover their love. • The Bride Chase (Christy Carlyle) offers a classic Victorian setup with a runaway bride and financial pressures. It is strong with emotion and just the right amount of romantic tension. • Tilly and the Unreformed Rake (Sofie Darling) is a standout slow-burn romance with class disparity and a heroine who knows her worth. The emotional payoff is deeply satisfying. • A Day at the Beach (Eileen Dreyer) is gripping and dramatic, blending second-chance romance with suspense, as a marriage tested by betrayal attempts to right itself. • A Night You Won’t Remember (Barbara Russell) is fast-paced, featuring a refreshing heroine and a touch of mystery that keeps the stakes high. • What Happens in Hedone (Misty Urban) is an insta-love romance with hidden identities and dual lives. It manages to balance emotion with humour, against Brighton’s more daring nightlife. Overall, this was a varied anthology that showcases love in all its forms. A great read. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
In Queen of Hearts, Lottie disguises herself as a man in order to count cards to win enough money so that she can afford to stay in Brighton to continue treatment for her ill brother. She doesn’t expect the gambling establishment owner to be the naked man her runaway parasol struck on the beach. I would have liked more to their story before the epilogue.
In Winner Takes All, after traveling theater troop player Mary steals a purse with a note about a gambling tournament and the funds to play she pretends to be a guileless southern belle heiress to get a chance at the prize but fellow player James could unmask her before the end.
Flirting with Disaster is a forbidden lesbian romance between Emma and visiting duchess Amalie.
In The Way We Were, Lucy doesn’t trust her military husband Reggie who has been away for a year and seen in the company of another woman. They are both still grieving the loss of their toddler daughter.
In The Bride Chase, Philippa fled an unwanted marriage to a man much older than her for money. Her brother sends his best friend Atlas after her, the man she slept with who abandoned her afterwards because she didn’t have a large dowry.
In Tilly and Unreformed Rake, personal maid Tilly decides to go the masquerade ball her lady received an invitation to in her stead and wins a signet ring that Lord Rhys has been trying to get back for the past year. She tells him he has to perform three noble deeds to win it back, which leads to some funny and steamy moments.
In A Day at the Beach, Eleanor’s husband returns from the dead determined to avenge his kidnapping and impressment in the navy believing she was behind it.
In A Night You Won't Remember, Esther’s mother wants her to catch a duke. Alexander is trying to avoid a marriage trap when he meets her in a maze. The story turns a little wild with a secret club where she was drugged and steals Alexander’s prize fencing foil that he needed for a competition and she can’t remember what she did with it.
Thanks to Booksprout for a copy of this multi-author anthology and this is my freely given opinion.
This is a variety of short stories from popular historical romance authors with a central theme of Brighton as a location featured in the story. Many of these are from authors I have previously enjoyed and I have to admit that I did not read all the stories, but primarily the ones from authors I have read before, so there are a couple I am saving for later. Most of these stories I have not read before, but I do wonder if some of them were previously published, or part of a series/world already established in the author's history, such as Kerrigan Byrne's Goode Girl's series.
In general, a good anthology of short stories from solidly enjoyable authors. They are a variety of spice and heat levels, and the ones I read seemed pretty solid reads even if you have not read the other books in the series - and they did interest me in the other books in the series. Be aware that this is a good variety of stories - including themes of enemies to lovers, second chance, differing social status, loss, and newly discovered sapphic love.
I think my favourites, on first reading were Queen of Hearts by Anna Bradley, about a poor card sharp disguising herself to make money at a notorious gaming hell in order to be able to stay in Brighton for her brother's health, after a disasterous meet-cute on the beach. Gayle Callen's The Way we Were, with a married couple reuniting after a long time apart, under the cloud of hurt, miscommunication, and misunderstanding. I really enjoyed the misunderstood Esther, who is bullied and beaten down by her mother and others for not conforming to society's expectations of what is beautiful and ladylike, by Barbara Russell as well.
A good deal on a good variety of historical romance short stories, and some intersting details about Brighton and those holidaying there in the past.
This book is an enjoyable collection of stories that take place in the seaside resort of Brighton. Each of the stories is unique and well-written. From taking the waters to finding love and dreams come true, each tale presents a interesting cast of characters, an interesting plot, and a happy ending. In Queen of Hearts by Anna Bradley, Charlotte Bathurst has come to Brighton so that her ailing brother can take the waters and the healing effects of the sea air. When their money is stolen, she decides to take a chance at a local gambling den to resupply their cash. Unbeknownst to her, the owner of the club is the same very handsome man she met on the beach. Armitage Hart is completely taken by the young woman who he knows is counting cards at his tables. There is a bit of a chase, but in the end, he finds her. Is it possible for the two of them to have a happy future? Things look good. Tilly and the Reformed Rake by Sofie Darling is an absolute treat. Rhys wants to make amends to his father for gambling away his signet ring, so he goes sits down to gamble with the man who has it, hoping to get it back. Unfortunately, he fails. This time it isn’t the cheating scoundrel who take it, but a beautiful young woman. Tilly is lady’s maid who has been rescued from a squalid life in the rookeries by her employer. She is clever and full of life and optimism. She looks forward to her future. Rhys is, or is trying desperately to be, a reformed rake. Tilly agrees to return his ring if he can perform three noble tasks. Can he do it? Maybe, and watching him try is absolutely delightful. He and Tilly have a zing between them. She is good for him. Will they find their happy ever after together. The odds are good. I received an ARC of this book via BookSprout and voluntarily reviewed it.
This is the best compilation of never-before-seen stories that I have read. I have purchased or reviewed many anthologies centered around a single theme, but these nine authors made Brighton live up to its acclaimed reputation. Although I would love to write a small blurb about each story, readers would not appreciate a five paragraph review. That being said, I own many books by every single author who contributed to this endeavor.
Every author wrote a different trope; the only repetition was the elegant prose that each author contributed and will be appreciated by readers who thirst for literature. The prose wasn’t dense or cumbersome, as some classic pieces can be, but light and refreshing. My favorite was Barbara Russell’s “A Night You Won’t Remember” about a young Lady whose mother is ambitiously trying to garner a duke for her. Said lady prefers to wield cricket bats. The Duke is trying to balance duties while preferring fencing. What will have readers roaring with laughter is what this young Lady did after following a friend to a club where societal inhibitions are tossed…as was her memory of that particular night. An honorable mention is awarded to Kerrigan Byrne for her rendering of a FF romance. Initially, I gave it a perfunctory glance and continued with the other stories, because it’s not my preference; however, I read “Flirting With Disaster” last, and found it to be exquisite. Her depictions of two women who struggled emotionally with societal demands and knowing their revelation of being different would be met with being shunned as pariahs, was glorious.
Every story deserves 5 stars 🌟, because they were all that good. Hope readers relish them as much as I did. I have received an ARC from the authors and I am leaving an unbiased review voluntarily.
Nine novellas linked by a stay in Brighton Queen of Hearts by Anna Bradley - her money stolen but needing to stay in Brighton for at least two weeks, what’s a girl going to do but count cards? But then she is caught… Winner Takes All by Tracy Brogan - Deception and poker. Loved it. Flirting with Disaster by Kerrigan Byrne - an interesting sapphic story. Would have liked to have known what happened to Emmett and Bainbridge though. The Way We Were by Gayle Callen - a marriage in crisis. After the death of their daughter, a year apart and rumours of unfaithfulness can Lucy and Reggie find their way back to each other? The Bride Chase by Christy Carlyle - a Viscount with his head in the sand and a lady fleeing an unwanted marriage. Will Atlas at last listen to his heart and not his head? Tilly and the Unreformed Rake by Sofie Darling - the wastrel third son of an Earl trying to reform by recovering his father’s ring and the reformed strumpet with business dreams. A Day at the Beach by Eileen Dreyer - six years after she buried her husband, a stranger arrives on her doorstep claiming she arranged for him to be kidnapped! A Night You Won’t Remember 4* by Barbara Russell - in which a lady meets a duke but doesn’t know it; becomes intoxicated and wild; and when sober, seduces said duke. What Happens in Hedone by Misty Urban - Well this young lady had two completely opposite sides to her; so different that I found it hard to reconcile them. By day the innocent, artless gentlewoman with an interest in marine life and by night a nearly naked sensualist looking for pleasure. No wonder that the MMC didn’t connect the two of them. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this story from OHB and Booksprout. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I grabbed this anthology because three of my favourite authors were in it – and I’m pleased to say I discovered a few more along the way! It’s an engaging mix of 9 novellas and novelettes with something for everyone. MCs from every rung of life, all ages and not a diamond in sight. Some were lighthearted and fun, others more emotional and angsty, ranging from kisses only to a nice splash of steam.
My favourites : 💍Tilly and the Unreformed Rake by Sofie Darling The stylist maid, her penitent 3rd son pup, a ring and three noble deeds. Rake reformation 101; playful and absolutely delicious with a Cinderella meet-cute. 🏏A Night You Won’t Remember by Barabara Russell Cricket, fencing, a spinster and a besotted duke. Refreshing and brilliant bonkers fun; a gorgeous compact friends-to-lovers romance! 🦭 What Happens in Hedone by Misty Urban A reluctant bride, a man with a plan and their last hurrah. Magically intimate with a humorous twist, and what a treat to meet my favourite Mad Baron’s son all grown up!
The others... 🛟Queen of Hearts by Anna Bradley; an impoverished Miss cheating a bored gaming hell owner to save her brother 🎭Winner Takes All by Tracy Brogan; an Irish actress, a by-blow golden boy, and a poker tournament scam 🎋Flirting with Disaster by Kerrigan Byrne: a sapphic awakening at a high-stakes family wedding ⚓The Way We Were by Gayle Callen; an estranged couple finding safe harbour once again 🪁The Bride Chase by Christy Carlyle; a runaway Lady and her knight in banged up armour 🦀A Day at the Beach by Eileen Dreyer; an unexpected reunion and the best birthday a little boy could ever wish for
While all of these were wonderful in their own way, I will say this: some of them left me longing for more like “where is the other half of this novel?”. I definitely prefer a well-rounded story without an epilogue over one with a huge time jump at the end.
That was my first thought when I read the title of this anthology. Anyone who is a fan of the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice knows exactly what scene that line is from.
(Just for the record, this collection of stories is nothing like that.)
So, as if on a pier at the ocean, I jumped in feet first. From the first story to the last, I was mesmerized. And with some of my favorite authors in here, I knew I was in good hands.
I won't go into details on the stories. That's not my review style. Just know that they are of different lengths and various scenarios. Some made me feel like I dove in headfirst, and others I waded in leisurely. And there was one that reminded me of going to the beach up here in the northeast of the US: you wade in up to your ankles, wait to get "used to it," then up to the knees until the waves of the story are starting to break around you, and you ride them until the story is done.
I'll let you figure out which is which.
Oh, my favorite? Although I loved each one in their own way, Winner Takes All by Tracy Brogan stole my heart. Oh, but The Way We Were by Gayle Callen stole it, too. Then again, Eileen Dreyer's A Day at the Beach took my breath away.
So, don't take my word for it! Grab a copy and get lost in a little romance (or two, or three!).

There’s just something irresistible about a seaside romance—especially when it’s set in the glittering social whirl of Regency and Victorian England. This collection delivers exactly what I look for in a Regency romance: longing glances, second chances, social ambition, and that delicious, heart-stopping moment when love finally wins. Set against the charming backdrop of Brighton—where the sea air stirs both scandal and possibility—this anthology gathers eight swoony stories from a talented lineup of historical romance authors. Each brings her own flavor to the setting, but together they create a cohesive, dreamy escape filled with yearning and hope. What I loved most is the variety of heroines. We have vicar’s daughters trying to secure their futures, country maidens navigating treacherous social waters, widows bravely daring to love again, and wounded hearts cautiously stepping back into the light. These aren’t just glittering ballroom romances—they’re stories about vulnerability, reinvention, and the courage it takes to risk your heart. As with any anthology, some stories resonated more strongly than others, but there wasn’t a single one I didn’t enjoy. They’re perfectly sized for an afternoon escape—ideal for curling up with a cup of tea when you’re in the mood for romance that’s heartfelt rather than heavy. A sweet, satisfying collection, guaranteed to leave you smiling.

Nine stories from nine different authors. Each short story is set in Brighton, some are related to the authors’ series but some standalones. All are well written with lovely characters Queen of Hearts – Anna Bradley Charlotte Bathurst is staying in Brighton with her brother Percy who has been ill. They hope the sea air & treatments will help him. She meets a man, in all his glory, when her parasol is blown away. Then their cash is stolen so Lottie sneaks out to win some cash at Hart’s Ace, a gambling den. But who should own it? Yes you’ve guessed. A delightful novella, the den owner & the card counting young woman. Attraction sizzles but can they have a future. Winner Takes All – Tracy Brogan Mary O’Sullivan picks a pocket & finds an invitation to an exclusive poker game, so she becomes a wealthy American heiress! James Pendleton suspects Mary isn’t all she seems. A new author to me & I really enjoyed this book Flirting with Disaster – Kerrigan Byrne Emmaline Goode didn’t expect to find love at a family wedding nor did she expect it to be Amelie Beauchamp, Duchesse de la Coeur, this is part of the Goode girls series & a wonderful addition I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
What Happens in Brighton is an absolute delight for any romance lover. This multi-author collection, featuring the incredible talents of Kerrigan Byrne, Gayle Callen, Sofie Darling, and other beloved authors, is a perfect showcase of why these writers are so adored.
Each story is set along the charming seashore of Brighton, bringing the coastal atmosphere to life with vivid descriptions that make you feel the sea breeze and hear the waves on the sand. The characters are vibrant, engaging, and brimming with personality, pulling you into their romantic journeys from the very first page.
The plots are as varied as the authors themselves, but each one is crafted with care, offering drama, laughter, and heartfelt moments. Every story builds to a joyful, satisfying happy ending, leaving you with a smile and a warm heart. It’s clear that the authors poured their passion for storytelling into this collection.
If you’re looking for a beautifully written, uplifting escape to the seaside, What Happens in Brighton is a must-read. It’s a charming celebration of love, friendship, and the magic of a well-told romance, and it fully deserves five shining stars!
This multi-author Regency-era romance collection truly reflects the diversity of its contributors. Each story has its own voice, tone, and approach to the historical setting, which keeps the anthology feeling fresh and varied throughout. That said, the quality and style differ from book to book. A few stories were easy to connect with and felt complete and satisfying on their own. Others, however, seemed as though they were lifted directly from an ongoing series. In those cases, I sometimes felt like I was missing background information, which made them less enjoyable as standalone reads. None of the stories were truly mind-blowing for me, but most were solid, well-written Regency romances with engaging characters and familiar tropes. A couple were just okay, but the majority were good enough to keep me reading and entertained. Overall, I’d rate this collection around three and a half to four stars, and I rounded up to four because the overall experience was positive. If you enjoy Regency romance and discovering different author styles in one volume, this anthology is worth picking up.

I love this book. I was going to review each story, but so many others have already done that. Each book is special and wonderful. Some are very short, some longer but all a great read. I took this ARC because it has some of my favorite author's stories. Everyone will have their own favorites and mine were, Winner Take All by Tracy Brogan, The way we Were by Gayle Callen will hurt and heal your heart, it is so touching and wonderful. Tilly and the Unreformed Rake by Sofie Darling will have you laughing out loud and hoping there is a happy ending. A Day at the Beach by Eileen Dreyer was super fun. And my favorite of all was What Happen in Hedone by Misty Urban will have all your emotions going some good and some bad but you will not be able to put it down. I lost many hours with this book, just had to find out what the next story would offer. Don't wait rush and get your copy and get started. No one should miss this great set of stories. I received an ARC from Book-sport and wish to thank them. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.
This anthology is such a treat - a whole bouquet of stories from some truly talented authors. The collection feels bright, varied, and wonderfully entertaining. Sure, some stories run shorter and some characters are more fleshed out than others, but that’s part of the charm for me. Every author brings something unique to the table, and each story offers its own flavor of romance and delight.
Anthologies are one of my favorite ways to read because you get this lovely mix of voices and styles, and sometimes you stumble across a new-to-you author who instantly becomes a must‑read. What Happens in Brighton delivers exactly that: a fun blend of tales with something for every kind of romance reader to enjoy.
As for Tilly and the Unreformed Rake by Sofie Darling - I received an ARC and absolutely adored it. I connected with Tilly from the moment she stepped onto the page, and Rhys? Well, I fell for him just as fast. The story felt fresh, original, and completely captivating. 💜🔥📚🔥💜
This is a collection of nine stories all around/dealing with Brighton. Some of these authors I have read previously, some are some of my favorite authors, and some I have not read at all. There are stores which I like more than others, but they are all good. The stories include a sister, who will do whatever she needs to do to help her brother get better, an actress who meets a man while gambling and they form an alliance, a Female/Female love story, a marriage which the husband wants it how it was, a love story between a lady and her brother’s best friend, a Lord who falls in love with a Ladies maid who helps him be a better person, a husband who was taken away from his family and now he is back to claim them, a lady who is trying to find her real self and one night she goes too far and forgets what happens, about a man who falls in love with two different ladies, who are really the same lady. I received an ARC of this book, and I am leaving my honest opinion.
I am reviewing the overall book and not focusing on a single story or author. The stories in this book are not interconnected and the only thing they have in common is they all take place in Brighton.
This book is a collection of wonderful stories by some fantastic authors. Overall the book was well written, entertaining and delightful. Some of the stories were shorter than others along with some characters that were more developed than others, but they were all delightful. Each author did a fabulous job in creating a unique story that was full of romance and enjoyable to read. I love reading anthologies because you get to read different stories from different authors and sometimes you even find new authors that you haven’t read anything from before. There was a mixture of stories within this book and something for everyone to discover. I would recommend this book!!
An anthology is always difficult for me to review. There are 9 writers bought together and their styles are very different, even an LGBT couple. Happening in Brighton is the only connection the stories have. It's a collection of stand-alone novellas and the characters do not carry over or blend. A couple of authors I follow and like produced as well as I expected. There are a couple authors I've not run across. I found the majority of stories to be just fine but not exciting. There is one I thought was poorly written, it was a chore to slog through. In all I would recommend this book as a nice beach or winter evening read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This was a fun little anthology to get through. I love when multiple authors take the same setting and make it feel totally different, and Brighton honestly sounded like the perfect seaside backdrop for all the romance going on. The characters all had their own struggles, but I liked how hopeful everything felt, with a lot of healing, forgiveness, and finding happiness by the end.
Not every story hit the exact same level for me, but overall, they were sweet, easy to read, and perfect when you want something light but still engaging. I also liked that it introduced me to a few authors I had not read before. I would recommend this if you're in the mood for something charming with heart.

“What Happens in Brighton” by Anna Bradley, et.al What a town This was an interesting collection of stories. I had forgotten why I rarely read collections of stories packaged under one cover/e-edition. There are nine stories and reading them one right after the other, well not my cup of tea. They are probably all good stories; a couple of them didn’t grab my attention aka draw me in and keep my attention; one grabbed my full attention, and made me laugh and shed a few tears; the rest of the stories were good and kept me turning the pages. If I had had the luxury of taking a day or two reading break between stories; I might have had a more enjoyable time within all the stories. Happy Reading ! !
All of the books in this anthology were a pleasure to read, some more than others, as is the case with most anthologies. If I were to rate each book individually, they would range from 3 to 5 stars, with the latter being more common.
Each story made me smile, laugh out loud, or, in the case of one book, feel a little sad. I think there is something for everybody's tastes: Second chance at love; Love at first sight; mistaken identity; and a same sex romance. All take place in beautiful Brighton, and I love each author's descriptions of the places there.
If you love quick reads, then you have 9 wonderful ones in this set.

Flirting with Disaster: Emma has many sisters and a brother, most of them married off happily. But Emma is discovering she would not be happy in a “traditional” relationship. While the family is prepping for her brother Emmett’s wedding there are many people in the home visiting or working. One such person would be the Duchess, recently widowed she wants to be her own person, something Emma can relate to. While Emma is exploring her feelings she finds out she’s not the only one in her circle with the same thoughts.
I received an early copy of this set and chose to read the author I’ve read before and finish the others later. My review has been given voluntarily.
This anthology has nine very different stories but all have the common thread of being set in Brighton. As with every anthology, there will be some stories you really enjoy and a few that you just don't. The great thing about anthologies is that you get to try a new author or two and see if you like their writing style. I enjoyed all the stories to varying degrees. They range in spice level so you can always choose to skip a few pages or that novella. I enjoy reading these especially as they are great when you want a happy ending but have limited time to read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I found this to be a really entertaining compilation of short romance stories written by various authors, but all set in Brighton. I’ve previously read work by some of the authors, & I would list Sofie Darling as one of my favorites, but I always appreciate the chance to discover authors new to me. I honestly enjoyed all the stories. They vary in length, steam, characters’ circumstances, & social classes, but are all well-written. I found myself laughing out loud in places, & misting up a bit in others, but always smiling @ each happy ending. Do not hesitate to grab this as a perfect Valentine’s Day read. Thanks to the authors for allowing me to read an advance copy via NetGalley.
