Ai Yazawa (Japanese: 矢沢あい, Yazawa Ai) is a Japanese manga author and illustrator. Her pen name comes from singer Eikichi Yazawa, of whom she is a fan.
Yazawa started her comics career in 1985. She specialises in shojo manga (girls' comics). Most of her works have been serialised in the magazines 'Ribon', 'Cookie' and 'Zipper'.
Yazawa's stories focus on young, often rebellious women and their relationships. The characters are always very stylish, and Yazawa herself is known for her sense of fashion. (She even attended a fashion school for some time after high school.)
Among her most famous manga are Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai (I'm No Angel, 1992–1995), Neighborhood Story (1995-1998), Paradise Kiss (1999-2004), and Nana (2000-2009), the latter awarded a Shogakukan Manga Award in 2003. Some of these works have been adapted into anime and live action movies.

if someone asked me whether they should read nana, i'd say no. wait. wait until Yazawa Ai has finished writing it, wait util the complete run has been published in english (although who knows when that will be?) because having to wait for the next volume is complete frickin AGONY.

in this volume we learn something crucial about Ren, his current relationship with Nana and his past with Reira; Takumi is an arse; Yasu is a little more human; and something really really bad happens on the last damn page.

Honestly, I think Nana and Ren should break up. it's obvious that she doesn't love him. and that Asami chick is annoying. I don't get why Nana stays holed up all day waiting for Takumi. he's a jerk and needs to get over himself.

I'm perpetually heartbroken that this series was abandoned. It is both my all-time favorite anime and manga. I will mourn it like the loss of a close friend for the rest of my days.

Love the wild Nana fashion as ever, but omg the hat choices on everyone in this volume make it difficult to even know who is who on the ever expanding cast LOL. Also christ, we finally see the true depths of how patriarchal, possessive, toxic, and petty Ren is in this one and while I wasn't surprised, I was shook that he said anything aloud to another human being (much less another human woman! With thoughts dreams and ambitions about singing!) about his horrible, horrible feelings towards his own fiancee. Nana squared continues to be the friendship/queer lens romance I came and stay for (even if It Too is dysfuntional). This issue feels like it has one too many things going on with the inclusion of the fan group scenes and the hotel gals and Misato coming back (yay tho!), I kind of miss the more simplistic earlier narratives. It's already enough going on just with the interband drama! Love the moments we get on Yasu, Punk Nana, and Nobu. Hachi and Takumi continue to be complex, thoughtful, and heartwrenching - the about face from the assault in the last issue is typical shojo stuff, but feels weird for Yazawa at the same time. One of my least fave issues so far but still packed to the brim Nana!!!

I have an ambivalent feeling about Takumi and Ren. I'm not sure if I HATE THEM TOTALLY or not. It's obvious that parts of their actions and speech are dubious, but remember that this is a work of fiction, so it isn't expected to be flawless. I'm smitten with Yasu and Miu.

"I want love, even if I'm not loved. I want to love someone totally, from the bottom of my heart. It's the most simple thing to do. So why is it so hard?

Takumi said he'd try to come home every night, but there were a lot of times he didn't come home cause of work. Most of the time it probably really was work, but sometimes my instincts told me otherwise. I don't care if Takumi has a hundred women. As long as I'm number one, that's all right. I'll keep on being number one no matter what."

Honestly, there are no healthy or good relationships in this manga.
Ren and Nana: No.
Nana and Takumi: No
Nobu and Yuri: No
Reira and Shin: No

They also don't really know who they love or who they want to be with, and everyone just gets hurt because they're all childish! but this volume does end with a devastating cliffhanger.

This series has finally lost me. The beautiful thing about the best manga (unless it's purely episodic, like Tezuka's Black Jack) is that there's usually a finely plotted story arc that builds over the course of several volumes to a tightly scripted and deeply satisfying climax. And then the series ends. Nana has begun to feel like a series that had an initial story arc all planned out, but then decided to extend its run beyond all natural limits. Kind of like all of those Mulder-less episodes in the final couple of seasons of the X-Files.

As I wrote in an earlier review of volume 13:

" I'm starting to get bored with this series. Plot and character development have been in stasis for about two books now. Reading this volume kind of felt like eating soup meant for two people that's been watered down so it can feed ten.

There's definitely some entertainment to be found here, but it's a lot of sweet nothings. There's definitely some entertainment to be found here, but it's a lot of sweet nothings. The soap-operatic dilemmas that the characters are currently encased in are the painfully uninteresting products of their entry into the 'real' world. Things were much more interesting when they were on the outside, living in a naive dreamworld.

This is even mirrored by the changes in Yazawa's drawing style for the last few books. While initial volumes had loving multi-page spreads that were fawning centerfolds of affection for the characters she was bringing into being, the last two volumes feature pages full of closed panels that mainly just move the plot along. Even though the plot is being moved along, however, the story itself isn't being advanced at all.

If things don't return to business as usual within the next couple of volumes, this series is in danger of losing me."

While I enjoy some of the drama, the story still feels aimless. Again, I keep asking “where is the story going?.” Since it’s kind of difficult to determine what the overarching plot is, I’m just going to read this series as a character study. I think it makes more sense that way.

I was indifferent to Ren x Nana but coming across that line where he says to Reira that he’d like to kill Nana so one else can have her was the biggest red flag ever. He’s clearly not doing well mentally (he’s on drugs too) and is only marrying her for possessive reasons. Those two look very good together but they are not healthy for each other at all. Now that the nasty paparazzi released those compromising photos we will see how much longer their relationship can last. Still can’t stand Takumi x Hachi. Nobu x Asami together is so pointless. I do not care for her character or her storyline at all. Need my boy Nobu to go find someone else (if only it was Hachi…). I don’t even need to say anything more about Shin x Reira *police sirens from a distance*. Nana CLEARLY has feelings for Yasu (cuz why are you freaking out over him having breakfast with that girl whose name I don’t remember???) She is very territorial over her friends and it is concerning.

All of the characters need to not be in romantic relationships because they suck at choosing good partners and constantly make excuses for their poor behaviour. The only person with sense is Yasu and Hachi’s two friends that work at The Jackson. Everybody else needs prayers and therapy asap!

As always, I hate Takumi with all my heart.
I feel bad seeing Ren like this because he's obviously not doing well, and nobody seems to help him...
It's sad to see everyone so lonely.

I’m getting to the point in the series where I’m literally foaming at the mouth to pick up the next volume. Being officially 2/3 completed also doesn’t sit right with me 😔

Nana's fashion sense is still to die for. I feel like no one checks on Ren but Reira. What he's going through mentally is pretty sad, but he clearly needs help because the whole "I want to kill Nana so no one else can have her" thing was terrifying. Plus he thinks Yasu and Nana have a thing for each other. This whole volume was very sad. Nobu finds out more about Yuri's job and Misato comes back around. Takumi cheats on Hachi but she says she doesn't care which really means she doesn't love him, but they still want to play house.

Volviéndome a releer todo el manga, sabiendo que voy a sufrir (más todavía) y que encima, cuando llegue al dolor absoluto, sabré que está obra no estará acabada ni se acabará. Qué tal vosotras.
