An awesome and totally realistic ending. I really enjoyed this one :)

*Edit*

After my initial reading of this manga and writing the review I think I re-read it over 5 times and now I'm officially in love with the whole series. Most of the people kept saying how they liked Shish but for me from the beginning it was Mamura. From the first time they introduced him, I literally loved him. I really did;t see any good in Shishio. He was selfish and didn't act as an adult. Meanwhile Mamura was the complete opposite Although he was just a teen he had much more insight to life and much more mature. His decision taking especially at the end showed what a truly kind hearted soul he was. And also how pure he was. Seriously being able to take such a decision must have been pretty tough for him but he still did so. That shows that unlike Shishio, Mamura really loved Suzume. Also their romantic moments were 100000000 times cuter than Shishio's and Suzume's.

Anyway I really loved the ending and it ended up giving me really fuzzy feelings by the end. Too cute. I wish there was a bit of longer epilogue. Bit more of "their" story after the ring incident ;)

Edit: 08.08.2023

Clearly the first time round I got the volumes mixed up and thought this was the last when it clearly isn’t. But at least my previous review shows that I’ve always preferred Mamura over Shisio for Suzume and at least now I know why I clearly did not like Shisio.

Looks like I will get disappointed with the fact that there won't be a relationship anymore. I can just feel it somehow and that spoiler I just found out about the last chapter, I'm even more sad. Suddenly it just lost that special thing that I found in those first volumes. I'm definitely not ok with the direction that Mika decided to take and what can I say, I really LOVED the first half of the series and wished that the author had stuck with it until the end.

AHHHHHHH PURRRFECT ENDING!!!!!

MIKA YAMAMORI I LOVE YOU SO MUCH YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I AM FEELING RIGHT NOW.
I AM JOYOUS, EUPHORIC, ELATED, FELICITOUS AND EVERYTHING THAT IS RELATED TO HAPPINESS ABOUT MAMURA.

Most people are always so interested in Sensei, even the friend that recommended this manga to me loved Sensei, but I never harboured that kind of feeling towards Sensei. However, the first time I saw Mamura, well that was another story.
I know that behind that rude attitude and excessive self defense towards girls has a story behind it and I am so grateful that Mika Yamamori decides to write about Mamura's story (which made me cry bucket of tears, fyi). I was crestfallen when I thought that Chun Chun is going to be with Sensei even thought I have been preparing for this moment since the first time I laid my eyes on the book.
CLEARLY, what happened was not what I expected.

I really thought Sensei will end up with Chun Chun, and I was really prepared to collect the pieces of Mamura's broken heart and try to piece them back together and I was more than prepared to hate Chun Chun for the rest of my life for breaking Mamura's heart.

But. that. doesn't. happen.
If the Chun Chun ends up with Sensei, then this story is a stereotypical student-teacher relationship, but it doesn't, which is a great plot twist, to be honest.

I love Chun Chun.
I really love her because she clearly made the right choice. See my point of view:
Mamura has been there for Chun Chun the whole time, fragile little Mamura who hates all kinds of girls but opened his heart to Chun Chun. If Chun Chun had chosen Sensei, I would've judged her as that kind of girl who uses a boy so that she can forget about the other boy and I do not respect that kind of person, may it be a girl or a boy. Someone shouldn't just use others for their own comfort. Who do you think you are?
Chun Chun, thank God, is not that kind of girl.
And I am so happy for Mamura, he clearly deserves it.

For Sensei, well I hope you find the right girl. I don't hate you, and I don't dislike you. I like you quite enough, but I just don't love you as much as I love Mamura.

SPOILER ALERT

description

Once Suzume clambers off the roof, it’s sports day! Avoidance is (shockingly) not the best strategy and it really starts to backfire as the unaddressed tension in student-teacher relations starts weighing down our heroine. But nobody is innocent, everybody is a little dumb, and sorting things out may take just a bit more time...

Complications upon complications this time out. Suzume makes her position very clear, but she’s not very clear herself on that position and the doubt is weighing her down. She’s chosen Mamura and is putting her all into it, but part of her still holds back.

Which is fine, figuring yourself out is part of young love, except Shishio is extra icky this volume with his doubling down on loving Suzume. Doing it is one thing, but giving name to what should not be named pushes this even farther over the line for me. And he’s such a doorknob - precisely how does he plan to make it work? Ugh, moron.

Luckily Mamura is mostly mature this time out and carries the day. Minus the chest-beating of the relay race (mind you, I was still pleased with that outcome), he becomes a little better at the whole boyfriend thing. Just in time for him to realize how much romantic tension is brewing elsewhere and get all sullen about it.

Still, I love the way Suzume takes charge of her destiny throughout this book. While she really has to make a choice, she’s still Mamura’s girlfriend and she totally kicks butt at the end of this book, freed of the boat anchor that is Shishio (for now...). I do like that she always comes through in the end for what she wants.

Throw in some background romance (I love Suzume calling out Yuyuka for being tsundere), wrapping all those up in a nice tidy package finally, and you have a very nice volume getting things in order for what promises to be a lot of beach next time out.

The backup stories are okay. Not as good as last time - one involves that guy from volume 1 with a crush on Suzume and while the story is cute it is very slight. The other story is a mash-up with another manga and if you have no familiarity with the second one it falls kinda flat (although I am glad somebody has the correct response to Shishio, although it arguably paves way for an even WORSE idea).

I have to say - I think this is one of the most well done love triangles in shojo. It’s certainly not one that should exist, but whether it’s the change in the male lead or just how it’s written, these feel like characters and not just obstacles inserted by the author. It’s much different than rivals in other stories.

4 stars. There’s one volume to go and this is one of the most measured and well done shojo I’ve read. I doubt it’s going to fail me at the last minute.

Cute, light, nice little read. Personally, I loved the whole thing, and I enjoyed the touch of realism in the journey of a young girl experiencing her first love.

But, I'm a bit of a sore loser in this manga. I really did love the relationship between Suzume and Shishio. Even if it was a forbidden love between student and teacher, I was gunning for them all the way through. I was surprised that they didn't end up together, but yet at the same time I don't hate Suzume and Mamura together. I just happened to cheer for the other team more.

My ship is endgame! I'm both happy and sad. Happy because my ship is endgame, and that rarely happens. Sad because it wasn't satisfying. I guess I want more time in between the confrontations.

Gaaaah! Omg! I cant believe this is over! O_O somehow i feel unsatisfied with how things work out. Don't get me wrong, i love the story and characters. I just.. i don't know. A part of me was rooting for "Shizume" and the other part of me was rooting for "Mazume" (/.\) i just felt so torn. When i thought that Suzume still loves Satsuki because she went to him after finding out he was in the hospital, i felt bad for Mamura-kun. Like, i mean c'mmon! He freaking picked up the pieces when Satsuki broke Chun chun's heart because he kept going back n forth with her cos of his lies/ pride. So, i guess the ending of this mangaka was okay. Mamura deserved to be the one chosen by Suzume in the end. Satsuki lost his chance. I guess the 1st guy doesn't always win the girl. :P

I shipped Sensei and Suzume so hard EVEN from the very beginning. I miss those cute scenes between them before Suzume was involved with Mamura. It dissatisfied me when sensei was rejected by her...sweetly.

I like the whole idea of student-teacher relationship because I find it exciting as its has this forbidden love element in it. But, I believe whatever the ending is.. I think it's the best ending that the author can make for this manga story.

So it's official Shishio Sensei is mine now. ;;) ha ha

okay.. lastly

YAMAMORI MIKA PLS MAKE LOTS OF SHOUJO MANGAS LIKE THIS we need it... what am I going to do without any shoujo worth reading like this one.

Most of the volume was dedicated to the sports festival. It's mostly a set up for the last volume of the series, and I would rate it only 3 stars if it weren't for some Mamura-Suzume moments. It seems Suzume is learning from the mistakes he made with Shishio.

This story is getting stale... I’m ready for the end.

And I low key wished that Suzume would’ve let Mr. Shishio tell her how he feels.... I know that he’s too old for her but I adore his character so much...
Can’t we switch Mamura and Mr. Shishio??? That would’ve been a better story.

I can't help thinking that Yamamori kept pulling herself back too much from the story she initially set out trying to tell. The pacing and emotional progression is a little bit off, and Suzume still seems like she's mostly just forcing herself to be happy in her backup relationship. Which isn't fair to Mamura. And he seems to be feeling it in this volume, too.

Everything with Shishio also feels forced. I get why Suzume's refusing to hear him out, and at this point, even if she's more attracted to him, there isn't really a path where they could get back together and be happy. They were never in much of a real relationship to begin with - both just idealizing a scenario where they could work together. But maybe if he actually said what he loves about her, it'd help readers to understand his point of view and see what he sees in her...because I genuinely don't see a true attraction there. What makes her someone he'd want to be with?

When he tells Mamura that it's not always so easy to get back together after a breakup, it still feels like it's more about his ex than it is about Suzume. And what happened to that ex after her popping into a cafe to tell Shishio to go after Suzume again? Kind of frustrating how much Shishio's storyline just disintegrated. It feels, almost, like he was meant to be the endgame but reactions against him were too strong so Yamamori just gave up, and his character suffered a ton as a result. He was so good and so interesting and now he just shows up to be an annoying foil for Mamura. It's a bummer of a progression.

Suzume does make consistent efforts throughout this volume to choose Mamura, but I think that's part of what's difficult for me as well...it feels like an effort. Yeah, love is a choice you have to continue making day after day for relationships to last, but in the early stages, she's still not feeling any of that sweetness and excitement with him. He's just someone she knows will never hurt her. And she's too afraid, I think, that if she listens to Shishio's full confession, she won't be able to pretend any of those feelings ever went away...

This could've been a really good story about heartbreak and second loves, but I'm not sure if it'll be able to fully get there in just one more volume.

We also have Yuyuka kind of anticlimactically getting herself a boyfriend, finally, in this volume - would've loved to actually see more of them spending time together - and then a couple bonus stories. One, featuring Suzume's childhood friend visiting her in the city, was cute enough. The other was a repeat of my least favorite, a mashup of Yamamori's characters with ones from her mangaka best friend's series.

This manga often comes up in blog posts and recommendations as a manga where the second lead (AKA the decent guy) gets the girl. So, a plot where Second Lead Syndrome won't happen and where the girl would be treated well?
SIGN ME THE F UP.
However, I really, truly, wholeheartedly dislike Teacher-Student romance but I can be lenient if both are no longer minors. So imagine my surprise when I was able to finish this considering the FL is in HS and the homeroom teacher is, what, a decade older?? I was shookt. (Went back to check: FL is 16 while teacher is 24, yuck.) So what kept me reading? The intense desire to get over it and unleash my anger over the stupid, stupid plot. Is it good? I'm not sure. I was rushing through each pages, filled with wanting to find out who she ends up with, that I think I ended up reading a spoiler midway and then just breezing through the remaining chapters of that arc.

Honestly, Uncle said it best on Chap 46:
You jerk, do you understand what you're doing?

Good points for this manga: FL isn't ditzy, the girls are fun and supportive (we love women supporting women), mangaka tried to add diversity to her characters (I love Tsuru and Inukai), and Mamoru (the softest boy)... but these aren't enough to make up for the stress it gave me lmao
