Hana and Nanase had one of the dumbest break-ups ever, then Nanase headed for a mixer and Hana came after her. Now everything is fine and love has triumphed… in most other books. It turns out that even dumb break-ups have consequences and Hana’s not getting a do-over that easy.

Look, I am big enough to say it - if we got this out of that break-up story I had to put up with, it was worth it. This takes a real clunker of a previous volume and makes something interesting from it, showing that actions do not exist in a vacuum and also that admitting what you want or opening yourself up to being hurt again is one of the hardest things to do.

Basically, Hana just figures he can swoop in, save a miserable Nanase, and that’ll be the key to getting back together, end of story. Well, nice try, but Nanase’s beyond wounded by him breaking things off and she’s not particularly interested in giving him a second chance.

Nanase’s the big focus here and her behaviour is borderline nonsensical until you recognize that, one, young love is frequently borderline nonsensical as a rule, and, two, she’s as upset with herself as she is anybody.

To Nanase’s mind, she should have been doing more to keep things going when Hana was suspended, rather than just being her usual goody-goody self. She’s not wrong either, but now she’s worried that she won’t be able to change enough to keep things from falling apart a second time.

That completely sidelines Hana’s realization that he screwed up and wants to make amends, he’s completely cognizant of his failings, since he might be able to accommodate a lot more of Nanase being Nanase now, but she’s still stuck thinking that ‘…maybe he won’t’.

Self-sabotage is brutal and Nanase has a lot of that here, just utterly punishing herself because she so wants this to go back where it was, but she’s unable to accept that it might be different and might work (it’s pretty obvious these two are so stupid for one another) and it’s a risk worth taking.

It’s a heavy (yet goofy) volume. Hana comes up with a particularly ridiculous wager that plays out exactly how it should, but it affords all the characters lots of time to be mopey and try to sort themselves out. There’s some fun stuff outside of all that with the hopeless rival who knows they’re the hopeless rival too.

Hana gets a little pushier than he probably should, but I will give a partial pass on this one because Nanase couldn’t be more obviously miserable as she sticks to her guns. Very much a case of trying to avoid future pain by denying yourself what you actually want. It’s a very fine line, but I’m okay with it (your interpretation may vary); he does take (multiple) no’s for an answer.

And then there’s that ending, which, well, okay, that was an earned moment.

3.5 stars, and guess what, let’s be generous because we can. We don’t get a lot of pointless breakups with prolonged consequences in shojo and this really turns around a storyline I was no fan of. At the end of the day, I am totally rooting for these two and, as I often say, what more do you want from your romances?

Err... Nanase plin-plan. Sebenarnya dia masih suka sama Hana-kun, tapi malah selalu menolak setiap diajak balikan sama Hana-kun. Akhirnya Hana-kun meminta untuk bertanding, jika nilainya lebih tinggi dari Nanase, dia ingin berkencan dengan Nanase.

Okay, now that was some well done, well deserved angst. It read like two people struggling to make the right choices, but they're hampered by the fact that they're teenagers. (Full disclosure: I made many poor choices as a teenager.)

Uh…Nanase thinks it’s HER fault and she couldn’t make HIM happy?! FFS.

I mean, I’m glad that Hana is having to work at things, but…I still don’t think they would be a successful couple.
