It feels strange to be sitting here, figuring out how to best rave about a book of Spanish grammar. It is not something that one normally does. There is nothing I can say that will make hundreds of pages of grammar explanations and exercises sound anything but dull. Homer himself could not make the subjunctive tense sound epic. A reincarnated Shakespeare could not turn preposition drills into poetry.

So it will sound rather unconvincing when I aver that this book is truly wonderful. You see, I had been living in Spain for quite some time before I picked it up. My Spanish was good enough to get by in most situations. I could understand and make myself understood. Even so, I never felt perfectly at home in the language. So much was still unfamiliar and unclear to me. Whenever I opened my mouth to say something, I would wonder: “Is that really how you say it?”

Somehow, the authors of this book overheard all of my internal doubts—for, from the first page to the last, they systematically go through every tricky part of the grammar, with lucid explanations and well-designed exercises. Why, for example, do Spaniards often put the reflexive ending on verbs that don’t seem to need it, such as “Me voy a comer un bocadillo”? And why do Spaniards sometimes end the second conditional with an indicative rather than a conditional tense, as in “Si estuviera, desde luego me escuchaba [rather than escucharía]”?

All this, and much more, was addressed in this book, with each grammar point reinforced with repetitive yet (for me) enjoyable exercises. Each lesson is divided into perfectly-digestible chunks, with the grammar point explained on the odd pages, and the corresponding exercise on the even pages. By the end of each lesson (there are 106 in total) I enjoyed the pleasant illusion that I had mastered yet another aspect of Spanish grammar.

While not sufficient in itself to learn Spanish, this book (and its sisters, for other levels) makes a wonderful addition to any Spanish student’s arsenal. Indeed, I wish there was something exactly like it for every other language!
