Nancy Loewen grew up on a farm in southwestern Minnesota, surrounded by library books and cats. She's published more than 140 books for children. FOUR TO THE POLE (co-authored with polar explorer Ann Bancroft) and THE LAST DAY OF KINDERGARTEN were Minnesota Book Award finalists. Her WRITER'S TOOLBOX series received a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association of Educational Publishers.
Nancy lives in Saint Paul and has an MFA in Creative Writing from Hamline University. She has two adult children and a cat who sometimes bites her knees under the table as she writes.
This had to be the funniest retelling of them all. Snow White is a dimwit. Yeah I said it dimwit. She forgets everything. She leaves the stove on when she cooks and sometimes forgets to TURN it on when she cooks, she forgets to stop knitting and creates 10 foot long scarves. She keeps falling for the Evil Queens poisons as long as the Queen is dressed as an old lady. The dwarves tell her not to leave the house, but she keeps forgetting. And don't get me started on the Prince. He is just as forgetful as she is.
I love the theme of Another Point of View and am delighted to have discovered this series. I believe it's important children learn empathy - and if they can giggle while doing so, and share stories with their families, too, well, all the better! Includes back matter.
This particular episode is more 'fractured' than 'another pov.' The story is changed too much for me. But, again, the back matter is terrific. And I do highly recommend any story in the series.
This twist on Snow White was adorable! I absolutely loved it. I have never been a big fan of snow white but this picture book actually made me rethink about why I disliked her so much. The things I loved were that it was told from the perspective of the dwarves. They loved her but she made life a little more challenging for them. I also adored how smart they were in this one and the humor that was found in it. I enjoyed how the Dwarves became more of the focus than Snow White did. Nancy Loewen helped make this radical version of Snow White more enjoyable. It held the intrigue of what the dwarves would have to do next and the fun spirit. It also held that adorable factor that just made you smile when you read it. The pictures in the book did help to add to the overall cuteness off the story and make it seem more relatable to those girls you knew and loved in High School. A very cute and fun read.
First of all, I thoroughly enjoy Disney, even though there have been a lot of poor reviews in the media here recently. Disney is always full of hope and inspiration, no matter what the circumstances might be. Gender, disabilities, and anything else that might be used to "classify" someone in today's world hold no merit with typical Disney.
"Seriously, Snow White was so Forgetful!" is a completely different tale than the original "Snow White" tale. Everything that you thought you knew has been turned around and been retold in a way where it makes Snow White look like a clumsy, forgetful, silly girl. This story was interesting, for every story can be told by different perspectives.
Book Ratings for People Too Busy to Read Someone’s Opinion of a Book That They’re Sure to Disagree With Anyway. (Yes, this title is long but the rating is not.)
Initial Impression: Snow White is a dip. Pictures: Exaggerated, funny. Characters: The dwarfs do all they can to save Snow White from herself. Plot: The seventh dwarf explains why Snow White was presumed dead, after eating a poisoned apple. One Line Summary: Snow White’s a nice girl but, boy, are we glad she's married now.
"We Dwarves used to have real names, but Snow White couldn't remember them" Said Seven the Dwarf
This is a fun series and this book makes me giggle.
"The Queen actually showed up at the reception if you can believe it. Everyone threw dinner rolls at her and booed so loudly that she ran away and was never heard from again"
It is a fun book and I like the talking points at the end to talk about this story and comparing it to the traditional fairy tale! This is fun!
I found this funny, my seven year old was my listener as I narrated the other side of the story.
This is a series called "The Other Side of the Story" it takes all the classic princess tales, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack and The Beanstalk and gives it a twist. Told by one of the other characters from the story.
I have read them all to my kids this one stood out for me as well as Jack and The Beanstalk.
A twist on the traditional Snow White Fairytale. This story is told by the Dwarves and although Snow White is still a sweet character she wasn't the do it all princess told in the first story. I liked the story and think it is funny and creative.
This story is told by the dwarfs. It is very funny. Snow White forgets so many things, including not opening the door to strangers, like the evil queen. Colorful and modern illustrations. Highly recommended Grades 1-3.
This version of Snow White is told by the dwarves and is comical because everything you think you knew about the story is retold in a different perspective, changing your view on the main character, Snow White.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but the title of this book caught my attention. Reading it left me mixed, especially with the target age. The images work well f or 4-8, but the text is more middle grade, or 8-12, in my opinion. I think this one will depend on the child as to how well received it is.
What I liked was there was no kiss. There was no "prince to the rescue." It was more a story of circumstance. However, it retained the truths of the original fairy tale while giving it a new spin.
What I disliked was how many times Snow White could be poisoned and choked to death, yet still live. Being a cautionary tale, this does a poor job illustrating the reality of these dangers. Had they played the magic aspect up more, the author could easily have easily emphasized the silliness. However, they leaned too much on kids knowing the original story, which I felt lessened the value of this one.
The questions at the end helped to give better context and enhance the moral lesson. That was a lovely choice. Overall, it's a cute book, but it's probably just not my taste.
The dwarfs are annoyed with Snow White because she is ditzy but she's nice and so they tolerate her. I think the reason why she is portrayed as forgetful is because she repeatedly falls for the stepmother's cursed objects three times without remembering the dwarf's warning. Pretty fun concept for a twisted fairy tale.
Makes you stop and wonder... Crazy to imagine the Disney princess so forgetful. Poor Doc being called #7. I had a friend who was forgetful like Snow White. She made Chocolate chip cookies without all the flour....they were extremely flat but still tasted delicious.
Princesses and Princes with flaws are the themes within this series and Snow White having a mind like a sieve is the main obstacle in this story. You gotta feel sorry for the dwarves here. Recommended? Sure Buy/Borrow? Borrow
Genre: Modern Fantasy Grade: 1-5 It was interesting by how on one of the dwarfs had told the story about Snow White. Though the dwarfs had gotten tired of Snow White by how forgetful she was. By the end of the book the dwarfs had appreciated Snow White for who she was.
Why are the princesses in these stories portrayed as being stupid? I get that the stories are supposed to be funny, but that can be done without making a character seem like she doesn’t have any common sense. Not loving this series.
This book made me chuckle and laugh. A fast read that will make you laugh. Banana cream pie without bananas and a prince who forgets he had lunch and Snow White who numbered the dwarves because she can't remember their names.
Seriously, Snow White Was SO Forgetful!: The Story of Snow White as Told by the Dwarves (The Other Side of the Story) by Nancy Loewen – I have never felt sorry for a castle full of imaginary servants, but I feel sorry for Snow White’s staff! Love these twisted tales! Happy Reading!
I prefer the original story. I know it’s not for my age group, and that it would be good for the correct age, but some things are much better kept in their original state.
Cute! I think it is super cool that this rendition has the dwarves taking care of Snow White instead of the other way around. I like that it stuck to *almost* the main plot, but includes her forgetfulness. Also very funny that the prince has the same forgetfulness as Snow.
