I absolutely loved this book. It was such a fantastic sequel. I love the complicated feelings that Shin and Chae Kyung have about each other. I hope to continue on with this series very soon.

Okay - so perhaps it's just that I have a special fondness for this series as it's the one that introduced me to manga/manhwa in the first place or perhaps because it is.. so perfect in that it hits the right amount of drama, the right level of swooniness and some of the most beautiful art. I get positively giddy when I get a new volume of Goong in and wish I could get my hands on more!

From Amazon, the description of the series is:
Monarchy ended long ago in Korea, but there are still other countries with Kings, Queens, princes and princesses. What if Korea had continued monarchism? What if all the beautiful palaces which are now only historical relics were actually filled with people?! What if the glamorous royal family still maintained the palace customs?! Welcome to a world where Korea still has the royal family living their lives! Only for this one high school girl, Che-Kyung, this is a tragedy, since she has to marry the prince who apparently is a total bastard!

In this volume she's celebrating her 1 year anniversary and the Queen is concocting a plan to make sure that divorce will not happen between Che-Kyung and her prince! The amount of drama, oy! So much fun.

I've already decided this series will be sitting on my shelf for my family and friends to enjoy. So. Much. Fun.

I love this overall series - engaging story and I like the art. This particular volume was a bit tougher to read, only because the story arc is heading to an unhappy place. I wanted (as always) more happy moments of evolving love between Shin and Chae-Kyung, and this volume takes us the other direction (Chae-Kyung desperate to get a divorce). But, still a good read...

Real slow burn romance plus hilarious characters. The new addition to the family kinda shocking & was taken out of the adaptation. Interesting!

Arg! So frustrating! Why can't Chae Kyung see that when Shin says he refuses to divorce her, that he can't live without her, it's because he actually wants to be with her? Of course, it would help if he'd cut off all communication with Hyo Rin, but still.

Obviously Shin is going through a hard time, too, and is trying to figure out how to make his life work. It's not like things with Chae Kyung are easy for Shin, either, especially when she visits her own form if cruelty on him: always trusting Yul's word above his own, continually talking about the divorce and going home, saying his own family never loved him. He does have a caring heart, but he can't figure out how to express it properly. I loved when he finally kissed Chae Kyung on their anniversary, and how he was sweetly teasing her the next day. I think a lot of their problems would be solved if he just kissed her more frequently. Apparently, I'm on Team Queen Mother!

Poor Yul. Most of the time it seems like he's relentless in his pursuit of Chae Kyung because he truly loves her, but then he says things like he wants to take away what's most important to Shin, and I second-guess that. His situation is sad indeed, regardless of his plans and motives. I just hope Chae Kyung doesn't take his advice and announce to the world that she wants a divorce. How in the world would that take any of the blame off her and her family??

The situation with Chae Kyung'a brother Chae Jun is super weird and awkward. It does indeed seem like he's stalking Hyo Rin. Even if he's doing it innocently, it's still kinda creepy.

This volume is messy, just like life. No one knows what they really want.

There's Chae-Kyung who has fallen for Shin. But, she also wants to be free of this new life and its obligations.

Shin has fallen for Chae-Kyung, but he also feels something for his former(?) girlfriend, Hyo-Rin. He shows affection for Chae-Kyung one moment and bristles at her the next. He's trying to protect her, maybe even free her from this royal life, and yet he also wants to protect his mother, which means that Chae-Kyung can never be free of him.

Yul is just as confused as anyone. He seems to genuinely love his cousin's bride, Chae-Kyung, but at other times, he seems that he only wants her to spite Shin. To make matters worse for the love triangle, Chae-Kyung loves Shin, but trusts Yul more, which Yul readily takes advantage of.

Then there's Yul's mother's agenda, Shin's mother's agenda, the king's agenda...not to mention that Chae-Kyung's brother is acting like a stalker after Hyo-Rin. It's a huge mess. And, it's fabulous.

Volume 9 came in the mail today...yahoo! I am so happy. Just waiting on volume 10 to get here as 11 and 12 already have. So happy. ^^

There is something addictive about this when I can read it in chunks, even though the characterization is inconsistent, the chibis are ugly, and the "ugly old people wanting to have sex is HILARIOUS" humor hurts my soul. It isn't worth it if there isn't a whole big chunk of it to skim through in a short time period, though.

v8: The king and queen announce the queen's pregnancy and ask Chae-Kyung to take over the queen's public duties. Chae-Kyung has admitted to Shin that she loves him and for some reason Shin thinks that the appropriate response to this is to act like a bad-tempered asshole and tell her nothing useful. Shin asks the king to keep him as the crown prince for the sake of his mother and unborn sibling and also because he adores the king, who clearly shares his son's talent for being abusive and withholding towards the people who care most about him. Chae-Kyung's brother stalks Hyo-Rin because stalking = love.

But of course. Of course Yul has to get in the way of everything between Shin and Chae Kyung. But I guess it's also Chae Kyung's fault for being so gullible. But at the same time, Shin is also at fault for not making Chae Kyung trust him enough.
