Mouse Guard: Baldwin the Brave and Other Tales

Rate this book
Behind every brave mouse, there is a tale.

Kenzie's father tells him a bedtime story about a Wise Weaver who takes on three terrifying predators with the sharpest weapon of all: his mind. Young Saxon goes to see a puppet show about the great Baldwin the Brave, whose optimism and courage changed his town forever. Sadie hears the love story of the worthy mouse Thane in his quest to win the heart of the talented and beautiful Ilsa. Young Rand hears the rarely heard tale of the Black Axe Trio, three sisters who carried on a legend, each in their own special way. Plus, stories of Seyan, the land where Mouse warriors travel after death, and of Insects, the faeries of the Mouse world! Every hero was once a child, listening to the stories of the heroes who came before them. It is the same with the Mouse Guard. Eisner Award-winning creator David Petersen spins six mouse fables, as told to a few familiar young furs, in this beautiful collection. Four Mouse Guard Free Comic Book Day stories brought together for the first time, as well as two brand new tales, reminding us all to be brave, stay true to ourselves, and follow out hearts.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is a compilation of Free Comic Book Day stories from 2011-2014? Plus two new stories. When you put them all together, you get a collection of stories being told by grown-up mice about Mouse Guard attributes - bravery, wisdom, love, duty, etc - to little child mice.

Now, here's what I love about these stories: OMG, these mice are so cute, I just want to gobble them down. I want to bite their pudgy Little Critter-like fingers. I love their faces! GAH! Precious and adorable!
Seriously, the illustrations are fantastic, just absolutely charming in all the detail, color, accuracy (as far as I can tell, but I'm not a historian so what do I know?) and general over-the-top cuteness. I could look at the panels all day, every day, and probably find something new each time.

The stories, though...well, they're quite suitable for the intended age group, which I think is the 8-12 range? Middle-grade/Juvenile territory.
I'm saying kids will dig this.
I'm also saying that I am not a kid and I was not as delighted by the stories as I was the artwork. I found some of them to be a bit heavy-handed, too simpering, too flourishy. Again, that's what will appeal to the age group for which these stories were intended but, to me, it was a distraction.

Ergo, ten billion stars for the beautiful illustrations but I rolled my eyes and sighed in frustration a few too many times over the text so math tells me that 3 stars is what the overall book gets.
Still, if you can get your hands on a copy, do so. Let your eyes feast upon the beautiful pictures.

I really liked this one, possibly my favorite of the Mouse Guard volumes. This is hardcover collection of the various "Free Comic Book Day" stories along with a few new ones. Great art and coloring as usual, but I personally just enjoyed these stories a little more than the others. There's something nostalgic about the Mouse Guard series that takes me back to my childhood, but at the same time, the stories are mature enough it's not like simply reading a children's book.

As I've stated before, for those of you unfamiliar with Mouse Guard, the closest novel I can think of would be Watership Down. If you enjoyed that one, Mouse Guard would probably be something you'd enjoy, and this volume would be a great place to start.

Each story is simply splendid. They feature one of the named mice in previous volumes, some during their childhood. It's suggested that they were deeply influenced by the lessons learned from the story recounted by older characters and have become skilled members of the Mouse Guard because of them. There is also a glimpse into Seyan, the legend of the Black Axe and a most wonderful lullaby.

Many years before the events in previous volumes there was a mouse town threatened by a snake, a crab and a hawk. The mice sent warriors to rid themselves of the threat, but none returned victorious until an intelligent mouse tricked the three predators into giving him the tools to defeat each one.

A puppet show reveals the importance of banding together against a threat from a wolf and of always striving to better your community so that everyone's lives can be improved.

A beautiful female mouse decided to test her many skills against her numerous suitors. One by one they were discouraged by her superior skill, thinking that they were required to best her. In the end only one suitor remained, one of the least skilled, but who loved the female mouse dearly.

Seyan is the place hero mice go to after they pass away. While deeds in battle are what most mice associate with acceptance into Seyan, the gatekeeper looks to other deeds as well. A true hero in not just the mouse who slays enemies and dies in battle, but also one who dedicates his life for the betterment of mousekind. Even if that means they are but a lowly cook with a good heart.

The Black Axe has passed between the hands of many heroes. No lesser were a trio of sisters who walked into battle together, completing each other to defeat considerably larger foes. Each had their role in battle, very much like each mouse must choose their profession at a young age.

The nursery rhyme is so innocent you are likely to shed a tear.

The story featuring Sadie is probably my favorite. Closely followed by Grace's story.

This was fun. Cute art as always. I enjoyed the short story nature of it, especially how the stories were told in different ways such as a puppet show or lullaby. And best of all, they tied in to the beloved characters of the main series.

Several beautifully illustrated fables from the world of Mouse Guard. The first story about a wise mouse is my favorite- brains over brawn!

I love this world, it’s gorgeous and it’s small.

Mouse Guard: Baldwin the Brave & Other Tales is a collection on Mouse Guard Free Comic Book Day issues and original stories written and illustrated by David Petersen.

A collection of short stories set in the Mouse Guard universe told as hand-me-down tales. Most of the inspirational stories are being told to a main character from the Mouse Guard series.

Most of the stories are folklore and fable-like stories of brave mice who inspired others. All of the stories come in at 10 pages so none of them are particularly long. As with every other book in the series, the art is breathtaking and enchanting.

Wow. This might have been one of my favorite entries in the Mouse Guard series.

Baldwin the Brave and Other Tales is just that, a collection of short stories that all feature at least one of our main cast of characters. Petersen implements some unique art and storytelling styles from story to story. He didn't have to do that, but he went the extra mile and the collection is all the better for it.

I love this world. I love these mice. I love these tales.

Turns out learning life lessons from anthropomorphic mice is just what the doctor ordered! This is a compilation of short stories meant to showcase some great life lessons that each mouse has learned along the way. It's a great entree for children into the Mouse Guard world. This is quite a bit less brutal than the main series since it is really a collection of fables.

Eeek! Serious girly squeal when I realised it was all of them as little mice.
Their favourite stories from their childhood that shaped who they would be and propelled them towards the Mouse Guard. I love this collection.

Simplemente maravilloso.

Ok, as i was afraid of, i just got addicted to this little mices and just gonna dive in at everybook that i can get my hands on.

On this one, we see a couple of stories that David Petersen released previously for FCBD. And all thr stories, brought an inside one, where we learn about this hugr world.

Just love the pace on it, but some of them was a littlr bit hard for me to keep on with the language. The story about Seyan, which is some kind of a "Valhalla" on this mythology was really great, showing what a real fighter is. Great, short book!

Just as amazing as the rest of the 'Mouse Guard' books. This book is mainly about bed time stories for the main characters when they were little and how these stories shaped the characters into who they are. A wonderful read and I can't wait for the next 'Mouse Guard' book.

This is a collection of (very) short graphic stories set in the Mouse Guard universe. They are mostly inconsequential, despite the effort to link them to the main characters from the original Mouse Guard adventures. Most of them are re-prints of Free Comic Book Day short offerings. I was expecting them to be children's stories for some reason, but they are general audience tellings, similar to the existing Mouse Guard books.

I would much rather see further full adventures continuing the stories told in the first two Mouse Guard books. At least these were written and drawn by David Peterson, the creator of Mouse Guard, and not other artists/writers as in the Legends of the Guard collections. Peterson's art is seminal and the best for illustrating this small world.

Our tale begins seasons ago. As Baldwin. A young mouse. Arrived at a town said to be cursed. Carved near the gates were the words "evil prevails".

And so the mice there believed this to be true any sad event or tragedy gave the saying further credence.

Such things did not sway Baldwin though, and he thought this town to be a perfect place to settle and start his life.

If you read my last review you will have seen my frustration that the book wasn't a sole collection of Mouse Guard stories. I was well aware that there had been many Free Comic Book Day one-shots from Mouse Guard and thought I had bought a collected Hardback of them.

This was not the case! However, and it's a big however, this book is exactly that. There are 6 stories in total which contain a whole host of Easter eggs from the main Mouse Guard series whilst expanding the mythology further.

"The Wise Weaver" was my favourite story, although they were all a lot of fun to read. 5 stars again for the Mouse Guard.

Take thee memory back to younger youth,
Where words read aloud form the place awoken dreams dwell.
Tales crafted to inspire both listening pups and elders who tell,
And the fiction of the story is truer than truth.
The wonder of which is how well they root in a fertile mind,
In every part of you the best planted tales are twined.

David Peterson continues his tradition of writing about the medieval world and animals in this book, Mouse Guard: Baldwin the Brave and Other Tales. The sequel to Mouse Guard: The Black Axe, Peterson continues the saga of Weaver Mouse. The mouse ventures through the habitat of the wild and comes across several animals – a hawk, a crab, and a snake attempting to avoid a fate of being eaten alive. The book has several chapters that are labeled to tell a tale about each step the mouse takes. The book showcases the community of medieval mice that live through the times of ancient times of transportation, manufacturing, etc. yet, shows the interaction of father and son as they engage in a game of cards. Peterson continues his mouse fables that give readers a moral lesson through the life of a mouse. The lessons are bravery, self-identity, and commitment to what one wants to accomplish.

A collection of Mouse Guard short stories (most previously released for Free Comic Book Day).

The stories included are: The Wise Weaver, Baldwin the Brave, Thane & Ilsa, Service to Seyan, The Axe Trio, and Oh Day Away. Perfect for Mouse Guard fans to want a little bit more. Some of the stories also show main characters from the longer Mouse Guard books before or after their adventures. My favorite of these was Thane & Ilsa, a story about an accomplished and intimidating young lady mouse many revered but only one had the guts and perseverance to propose to.

Notes on content: No language issues or sexual content. If you're familiar with Mouse Guard, there are often battles. Some deaths are shown with some blood or ichor and one suicide is thwarted.

I love this kind of fable-adjacent, folkloric storytelling, especially when done from the POV of animals (it's a huge part of why I love Watership Down as much as a I do), so it's no surprise I really enjoyed this. Characterization has been the weak point of this series as a whole, and this kind of storytelling makes that a negligible fault.

It's also nice to see some of the characters from past books listening to these stories. Last time I read a Mouse Guard was six years ago somehow so I'm a little hazy on the details, but I'll assume it ties in neatly. The art, as always, is excellent. There's some different stylistic stuff going on in this collection with two of the stories so that's interesting as well. Glad I got around to this.

The existence of the Mouse Guard Free Comic Book Day comics always made me a bit sad since I never managed to collect them myself; nice to know that they were all gathered together in one book, plus some other stories.

The stories are cute, and as always with Mouse Guard the art is quite nice. But I didn't find any of them particularly memorable, and overall it seems to be aimed more at a younger audience.

I'm also left wondering what is up with the series. Mouse Guard seems to be popular, but I haven't seen any new books in the series in a few years. Is it over, or is the creator taking a break or something?

A collection of the free Comic Book Day books for Mouse Guard. Petersen writes about the challenges of comic book day and it has been something I have wondered about. You often see these one shots in collections. They often don't quite work.

Here, however, by putting it in terms of past lore and kids' tales, this brings more to the table. Sure, some of the fables are ripped off but that is fine. Much like tales evolve and change, this provides a way to show how that happens.

Worth the read with each tale also accenting other visuals that don't always get time to breathe in the regular issues.

Yet again, Petersen proves his mastery with this charming anthology of individual tales, often told by one character to another, and often forming an unexpected detail in the back story of heroes we already know. The virtuosity of art and narrative is on display throughout, and what could have easily been a volume of throwaway tales has become a vital addition to the utterly engaging world of the Mouse Guard.

Some of the stories I liked better than others; but all were written with a unique charm and the beautiful artwork of the Mouse Guard books. At the same time they evoked the universal magic of fairy tales which have always enchanted me with morals of the heart and moments of kindness.

For those who enjoy returning to such stories with mice taking the roles of their central characters, I recommend picking up this book.
