The bridge between Kate's primitive village and Ian's contemporary world is long and wide. Due to a horrifying event that ends in her self-imposed banishment, Kate finds herself at the mercy of Ian and his friends--the boys of Eden with their unnatural abilities and dark secrets. Kate has no idea if life outside the Village exists, but Ian promises her she will have a future in Eden if she will trust him. With Diana by her side, she takes the first step in faith.

The journey is harsh, full of relentless rainstorms, illness, clandestine troublemakers . . . and no sign of another village. Kate begins to doubt her decision to leave everything she's ever known behind. When Diana's daughter, Tabitha, is struck with a sickness that forces Ian to leave them behind and go for help, Kate's hopelessness soars. But quiet and confident Justin takes the reins in Ian's absence, and Kate feels a subtle bend toward him. Only then do the secrets surface, leaving Kate in a miserable state of shock as her faith in Ian falters.

Meanwhile, inside the modernized walls of Eden, Ian must face horrific truths about the source of his superhuman qualities. Truths that will test whether Kate can ever trust him again.

As for Kate, will entrusting her heart to a boy from Eden place her in graver danger than ever before? Will Eden finally be enough? Or will her heart continue to ache for something greater?

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to author Casey Hays.)

“The world is big,” Ian continues, trapping me beneath his strong arm. “It may be scary, but you don’t have to be afraid of it. Not even when somebody is throwing knives at you,”

This was a YA dystopian sequel, picking up where the first left off.

Kate was still a strong character in this book, and I thought it quite bad the way the boys had been lying to her about Eden. Seeing as she was leaving everything she had ever known behind, they should have been truthful with her.

The storyline in this was all about Kate, Ian and crew travelling from Kate’s village to Eden, and Kate discovering that the boys had been lying to her about what Eden was really like along the way. We did get a bit of action, and a very unfortunate death, but the pace was quite slow, and the book did drag in places.

The ending to this was a giant cliff-hanger! And there was literally a cliff involved!

Oh, Casey...you left me on a cliffhanger - quite literally! I was reading along, eyeing the time and the amount remaining in the book...and thinking, gee, there is a lot to "wrap up", they have to start finding answers soon...and the book ended, with a promise of a 3rd book to come. While I'm happy to not have to leave these characters, I wish there had been more resolution to the secrets of Eden. We do learn some of what makes The Boys of Eden so special, but even more questions are raised, both about Eden and the surrounding world these characters inhabit. On the whole, this entire book was a journey for these characters...and kind of a bummer, with a lot of sad and/or disturbing things happening along the way. I would actually rate it 4 1/2 stars.

I guess I will just have to patiently wait for the next installment and hope that Casey Hays writes FAST!

I was hoping this would have been as good as the 1st one. It wasn't. I was so bored by the end. Kate was annoying as hell. Ian was annoying as hell. Nothing happened but a whole lot of walking. Super disappointed. It ended with a cliffhanger, even that can't make ke pick up the 3rd book.

A heartbreaking cliffhanger of a sequel!!

Kate, Diana, and the boys from Eden continue their journey to Eden. Well, most of them do anyway. Ian runs back to Eden with little Tabitha because she's very very sick. Before Ian leaves, he tries to tell Kate the truth about Eden. He mentions a few things he shouldn't have. You see, Eden has a Code all of it's residents are bound by, and oath breakers of The Code are dealt with swiftly and cruelly. Justin is then left to pickup the mess Ian had left behind with Kate. Justin tells Kate the truth about Eden, all of it. He even goes as far as to tell Kate where she and Diana are actually going. (I will not be telling you any of the details Justin told Kate. You'll have to read the book for those. Sorry!) There are a lot of trials our little group goes through in this fabulously written sequel. Another illness, an ambush with a fire, and death. And that's all before we hear about an attack on Eden. WHAT??? Yep. I'm warning you. The impenetrable city may not be so safe, or is it?? Again I tell you, read the book!

This book has a favorite of mine, multiple points of view. Woohoo!! We get to see inside of Ian and what makes him tick. We also, through Ian's eyes, get a great picture of Eden. We meet Ian's family, some of his acquaintances and meet some new characters.

My suggestion to you is, if you have read Breeder by Casey Hays, this is a must read. If you haven't, read Breeder then read The Archer. In my opinion this is not a stand alone.

*This book was graciously gifted to me by the author in exchange for an unbiased review of the work.*

Firstly, I'd like to thank Casey Hays for sharing both her first book, Breeder, and this book with me - they are BOTH fabulous! Second, I have to complain that there was no preview of book 3. sniffle I guess I'll just have to wait for it to be released like a normal person.

There were a minimal number of errors in the copy I received (I recall 55 (which in a 369 page book, is pretty darn good if you ask me!) One of them was a simple typo the likes of > but since I've been asked by more than 1 author in the past about what any small editorial problems I noticed were, I tried to make a couple of mental notes to be of aid. I of course do NOT in any way mean anything I mention to be construed as derogatory! Two things I can think of off the top of my head are:
1. The use of "me and Diana", etc. grated on my nerves a little bit. Since the author is an English teacher, I know that she knows it is always imperative to list others before yourself. On the plus side, at least she had the "me" part right.

2. For some reason, things continually "peaked" Ian or Justin's interest when I feel all but certain they were actually intentended to "pique" said characters' respective interests.

It was interesting getting to know the boys better - primarily Ian and Justin. I was also fairly fascinated by Eden and especially Ava. I can't claim I was excited about certain occurences

In any case, as is made obvious from my rating, I greatly enjoyed the book. Lastly, I look forward, not only to reading to next book, but to seeing to artwork with which Ms. Hays's son graces the cover!

Stunning, heartbreaking, suspenseful , loving,. These are just a few words I am feeling after finishing the Archer. Breeder was one of my most memorable and favourite reads of 2014.

I wasn't sure where this book would go but it was not what I expected. I thought a big adventure for Ian and Kate was about to begin. I thought I would have many answers in this book. I didn't realize it would be a journey for characters and readers alike.

Kate and her friend Diana leave their village after defying everything they have believed in. Ian and his friends from Eden returned to get Kate. The girls believe they have started the journey to Eden, to a new life. They have no idea how different the world really is or how the secrets of Eden will keep them from this new life.

The journey starts and there are revelations and self doubt in every step Kate takes. As Kate learns the world as they know it is a lie, but they are not the only lies Kate has been told. Many lies that Ian has told her come to light, shaking Kate's trust in Ian and Eden.

At points in the book , it seems like not much is going on. You spend a lot of time in Kate's head. She is always weighing the good and bad. The doubt she has of not believing blindly like the other women in her village. All the thoughts that she has make you realize what a remarkable character Kate is. I was never bored in her head , she is everything a true heroine should be. Ian is her match. Even with his impulsive actions , he is always thinking of Kate , his friends and his family. You get to spend some time in Ian's head , getting to know him and Eden. As the reader you realized that Eden is not the place Kate or Ian thought it was. The boys soon learn that the place they love has many secrets that go against everything they knew.

I loved the Archer as much as I did Breeder. While at the same time they were two very different books. The Archer answers some questions , while leaving you wondering about so many.

The ending , wow, wow , wow. Really Casey , that was cruel.

I must confess that I enjoyed book one a little more than book two and I think that is because this one was so heartbreaking and I know it had to be because that's life and even more so in this world but it made me very sad on many occasions, now I will say that I'm in love with this series and heartbreaking or not I will continue on because I'm totally hooked and that insane cliffhanger demands me to find out what happens, I am a liitle ticked off about the ending, to leave me hanging like that is just cruel especially since I can't get book 3 yet but as soon as I can I'm all over it.
I still love Kate she is strong and capable and I love the group that surrounds her on her scary journey to a new life.

"These boys from Eden are a mystery cloaked in rugged strength and equal tenderness."

I enjoyed the Eden boys Ian and Justin most of all and I really liked getting Ian's point of view in this book it gave me more info on Eden, Ian's super powers and also the insight I craved on Ian's feelings for Kate. Eden has a ton of secrets that I did not expect, it is not the utopia it was made out to be but the world is a crazy place and Kate does realize this eventually.

"The outside world is no better," I say quietly "It might even be worse."

I am crazy excited for book 3 there is so much I need to know and so many people I'm hoping find the happiness they deserve, they have been through too much heatache as it is and I know there is more to come.

"Grief does not keep track of time."

Amazing series with amazing writing and this has become one of my favorite dystopians.

The Archer by Casey Hays is a journey, a transition, an awakening for the heroine, Kate. At the end of The Breeder (the first book in the series, Arrow’s Flight), due to tragic circumstances, Kate must leave her village—the only place she ever knew existed on the Earth. She along with her friend Diana place their hope and trust for a brighter future in Kate’s beloved friend, Ian, and his friends from Eden. It is Kate's expectation when they leave the village that they will be heading to Eden. But on their journey, Kate discovers that expectations can be murky and deceiving when the whole truth has not been revealed. It is a journey towards enlightenment with revelations and dangers beyond her rose-colored imagination. Who is the antagonist in The Archer? In the first book in the series, The Breeder, the antagonist was clear—Mona, the village leader, was the source of most of Kate’s woes. In The Archer, the antagonist is not quite so evident. Is it the insidious weather—the never-ending rain? The mysterious beings in the forest who attack with knives and flaming arrows? The “Archer”—the one in the night sky, or the one leading the journey who has not been totally forthright? The toxin? Eden’s C.O.D.E? Bethany? The journey itself? Questions—lots of questions still to be answered. Answers to life and death questions remain in “suspended animation” at the conclusion of The Archer! The journey continues. I eagerly await Book 3!

Casey Hays, you have done it again! This is way better than any post apocalyptic book i have read.
This has been an epic journey till now. More questions than ever.
Kate has left her village under dire circumstances and now she is on her way to Eden. She has few people along with her to complete the journey. But, the journey itself is not what she has imagined. The danger of the post apocalyptic world is now on completely unleashed. Being from a villages and warped in the limited knowledge of the world is not helping her.
I really loved Kate in the first book. Her struggles were real. In this book, she's more into her head. Thinking the same thing again and again. It did wear me off but than the story would always make it up for it.
So many questions raised when very few were answered, this absolutely makes me want to have the third installment in my hand now.
If you are looking for an post apocalyptic journey be sure to check this book out. It has one of the strongest lead female and since it's a very serious book i let go of my need to have sass in my leading lady.

I liked the second book in this series even more than the first. In the second book, it really felt more like a post-apocalyptic novel, since there was more evidence of and reference to what had happened to society since The Fall (as they call the apocalyptic war that decimated society). That is what draws me to the this genre, the "what ifs" of how the world would change and adapt after such an event.

I enjoyed the chance to "see" a bit more of the advanced society in Eden and I hope the next book explores more of the other villages that remain, as well as letting us know what's happening to Diana and Kate's village in their absence.

The story ended on a very literal cliffhanger and I look forward to the next book to see how that is resolved.

Why Isn't book three out yet?

This book was awesome. It was great to get the chance to see things from Ian's perspective as well as Kate's. So many questions arose in this book that will hopefully be answered in the next installment. But be ready for a cliffhanger! Agh!

Oftentimes it seems like the second book in a series is a huge letdown. That is definitely not the case with "The Archer"!

Kate has left everything she ever knew behind in order to follow the love of her life, Ian, into a world she never even knew existed. She convinces Ian & his friends to take her friend, Diana, along in order to save her daughter & unborn child from the horrors of the Village.

This book is full of heartbreak, romance, adventure, hopelessness, introspection....you get the idea. Ms. Hays has a way with words and she has the ability to really draw you into the world she has built. Her characters are well-developed, their personalities really getting into your head as you read. And beware......this book has a true cliffhanger!

This book will make you cry, it will make you think, and it will leave you breathless at times. I am just glad that the next book in the series is available so that I don't have to wait to see what happens next!

What the what!

This book is quite the ride!

I was happy to see Kate and Ian again, and to get to know the other Boys of Eden a bit better, especially Justin (who I like a bit more than Ian), though I did miss John (he did have a short bit at the beginning!)

You get to enter Eden and come away with even more mysteries about it! The council seems to have a lot to answer for, for the decisions they’ve made and for the things they are hiding. I enjoyed getting to meet Ian’s little sister and I’m not sure how I feel about his parents. Ian is rash, no doubt about it, but he’s also right about something being wrong.

But that ending. I can’t take the suspense! I need to get my hands on the next book now!

I was blessed with a free copy of this book, and have chosen of my own volition to share this review with you!

Another fantastic read from Casey Hays! Continuing the story from Breeder (Arrow's Flight, #1) this tale leaves the Village behind with a quest towards the city of Eden. Learning the truth about Eden means that the outsiders cannot enter the city and survive! Those from Eden exhibit strange talents, while the girls from Eden have their own issues to deal with.

This tale is told from both Ian and Kate's viewpoints, which provides an interesting depth to the story. The characters are further developed in this book. Be prepared for a wild ride, a tale full of twists and turns!

there are some major reveals in this sequel. Ian begins to understand that things are being kept hidden by the rulers of Eden, and fights to do what's right. Kate finds out that there are some major things she didn't know, that Ian has been lying. Diana struggles with depression and worry over Tabitha. It becomes a swirling mix of lies, and for your own good excuses. There is an outside danger though. Someone knows about Eden, and is testing the boy's abilities. There is violence, and no adult content.

I actually finished this book a couple of years ago. In fact, I finished the entire series! Great dystopian read. The characters are fresh and real. This author has a way with dialogue that makes you KNOW these characters and their motives intimately! The love story continues to explode in this 2nd book. Be prepared for the cliffhangers of all cliffhangers, too. Wow! A great book!

Interesting Sequel

When I first started reading the story I thought the beginning was a little slow paced, but the reason behind it was there was a lot of learning that was being done. We get to find a little more background and the cities and the characters so it will be worth in the end. You do get to see the more complex parts of each of the characters. Their inner workings you might say. You can a deeper feeling of their emotions, so being a little slower was a good thing for this. Makes you pay a little more attention..

It does start to pick up in the middle and the end. The ending will cause you to throw things, but what good is a book if you're not throwing things at the author or cursing under your breathe.

Getting through the slow beginning with be a little tough but well worth it in the end.

Until Next Time... Tabi

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Archer is the second book in the Arrow Flight series, following Breeder. In this second installment, it follows Kate, Diana, Ian, Justin, Jesse and Max as they leave the village and are headed to Eden, , with the boys' superhuman qualities. During this journey, problems and regret arise, and nothing seems to go right. It doesn't help that there's another village that seems to be going after the boys of Eden to kill them.

I'll start off by saying that this book was good and was very well written. However, it didn't grasp my attention like the first one did. In my opinion, it suffered a little bit from second book syndrome, which is why it took me longer than normal to finish this. It was just a bunch of traveling, and not a whole lot happened. We spent a lot of time in Kate's head, where she was dealing with an inner-war of whether she made the right choice of leaving, as well as her guilt of accidentally killing Mona. I, personally, got bored, and her thoughts didn't intrigue me enough.

She continually had John's warning in her mind...beware the boys of Eden. Through this she had questions, which gave the readers answers of what this meant. What was so dangerous about Eden? What is Eden like? Some of these answers wasn't what she wanted to hear. She learned about different lies that she's been told, leading her to question her trust that she placed in the boys of Eden.

I loved that we got to be in Ian's head for a little bit. I can't say it made me like him more, because I don't think it did, but I understand him a little more. He spent a little time in Eden and we learn some more about what Eden is truly like. Being in his mind were my favorite parts of the book.

It ends with a cliffhanger that makes me want to start the third one right away. Unfortunately I have to wait however long until that book comes out. So while the book wasn't completely intriguing, it was entertaining and well written enough to earn 4 stars from me. I would like to thank the author for giving me the opportunity to read and review.

Be ready to commit because after you finish Breeder and jump into this journey you are going to NEED to ready Master! If you like YA and Dystopian books, then this series is for you. This author has already given you characters that are incredibly relatable in a primitve world that goes perfect with Breeder. Then this journey starts in The Archer and swallows you whole. Kate’s village is nothing in comparison to the technology that Ian’s city has. The further on their journey the more Kate realizes there is a huge difference. There are many, many lies and truths that unfold and has everyone questioning their reasoning and faith. The story is told from Kate’s and Ian’s point of view. I have to say that I was really getting upset with Ian and his friends but then when you get to see where Ian is coming from it made me question exactly how this was going to play out. There are so many twisting paths and huge decisions that they come across that makes even the strongest character question what’s right and wrong. This is a very emotional book. I was all over the place being happy, sad, hurt, confused....I even wanted to shake the author...a little bit, lol!

“Don’t worry. There it is again . I close my eyes, fighting back my tears. Everything I’ve ever known is slowly being swallowed up in this new life I’ve chosen. The future is more of a mystery than ever before. Dangers are everywhere from vicious storms to villains, and I am not to worry.”

“Some rules deserve to be broken, Ian. But think very carefully about which ones are worth it.”

“Death is everywhere; we can’t escape him. We can run away from the Village— run to the ends of the earth and jump off— and it will be he who waits with open arms to catch us every time. I am weary, so weary of watching him take us one by one. It is our true destiny, and there is no end in sight.”

There is a desperation with these characters that absolutely sucks you in and squeezes until the very end. And the cliffhanger...OH THE CLIFFHANGER! I meant what I said. I need to know what happens next!

After a horrible accident, Kate and Ian roles are reversed. She now must rely solely on him and his friends. They are traveling to Eden to start a new life together. It is a new experience for Kate because she didn't know anything was beyond her village. It is rough traveling because it is filled with harsh weather, illness and enemies. Now in the world Kate contemplates her faith and learns more about herself and the boys of Eden.

I'm first going to say that I'm addicted to this series. It is so well written that you quickly become immersed in the story. I could easily picture everything this rag tag group experienced in their journey. These characters capture your heart and won't let them go. I like them more with each page. My favorite character of this book was Justin. We finally got to formally meet him. I just adore him so much. I hope we continue to get more of him in the upcoming book.

My favorite moment was when Justin was carving his wood telling Kate what he feels is best for Diana. It is a touching moment and truly speaks to his character. The most exciting moment was the final chapter. I can't believe the cliff hanger at the end. I'm glad the third book is released already or I would be having a fit. I don't know if I could wait to find out what is going to happen.

This series is overall fantastic. It captures a element for everyone. I will be looking forward to read the next book in the series.

This book is the second installment of the 'Arrow's Flight' series. Since I haven't read the first one, I was curious to see if it would be readable as a stand-alone book. And it was, in fact it was a actually really good read on its own merit.
The story mostly follows a girl from the Village named Kate, and a boy who was a former prisoner there, Ian. They escape along with a very pregnant Diana, her small child Tabitha, and Ian's friends Max, Jesse and Justin. They are trying to make it back to the place the boys are from...Eden.
The people of Eden seem different than everyone else. They are bigger, stronger, and heal faster than regular humans do. Kate eventually finds out the reason why, along with a few other things Ian hasn't been honest about.
I found Archer to be an adventure filled ride, with action on almost every page. Also romance and drama galore to keep you intrigued. The characters are interesting, as they live a post-apocalyptic life that is unfamiliar. Parts of the story are heartbreaking and really make you feel the characters pain. (No spoilers, sorry)
When I finished, I gave the book to my oldest daughter and she seems engrossed by it. So I'd recommend Archer to readers of all ages and tastes because it simply is a great book.

I had to wait a few days after I finished the book to write this review. I had too many mixed feelings. One thing was sure: I loved the book, the writing style and the characters development, and I couldn’t wait to start book 3.

This story is heartbreaking since the beginning, since book 1 I knew I was going to spend my reading time crying and cursing and thinking “how is this possible?”(I know it’s fiction, but I’m really sentimental with my books and I like to think they are real).

The events in this book are fast paced, intriguing and leave you thinking about all the characters pasts and future. It makes you re consider your thinking about the first book and wish there were an exclusive wiki to go and read the facts and history of Eden and The Fall.

Despite the sad moments and my 2-day rage quitting (I was too mad and I didn’t want to continue reading), I was too attached to the story and the characters and needed to know more. I’m glad I did and now I can’t wait to start (continue) the third and last book of this series.

Escape. What does that really mean? Leaving behind the hell she has endured, Kate remains unsure of what Eden represents. There is also the dangerous journey, much like the story of her life.

I really enjoy the progression of this story. It is complete with all of the elements I need to make the story compelling. Love, loss, action, revelations, and a heart thumping cliffhanger keep me interested from beginning to end.

This book uses less Christian scriptures than book one, Breeder. In Archer, author Casey Hays uses more of an eye toward the relationship between the scripture and the story. The editing eye that she uses enables her to incorporate the scriptures into the book without endangering the reading flow.

I like the way Hays includes the duel points of view. I find that it peaks my interest more than only Kate’s point of view in Breeder. I find this book more enjoyable than the first. 4 stars

I loved book one, Breeder, and couldn't wait to read this one. I wasn't disappointed.

I loved the relationship between Kate and Ian, and was interested to see where the author would take it once they escaped the imprisonment of Kate's life in her village. Kate was brought up to believe her village was the only one, and to discover there was another totally confused her. What she discovers in this book has her doubting her whole existence.

We find out a lot more about Eden, and discover the answers to long hidden secrets. But with those answers come even more questions, which the boys from Eden themselves don't know the answers to.

I loved finding out more about the other characters in this story. Ian's friends are as intriguing as he is.

The ending leaves us hanging, and I can't wait to move on to book three.

Almost didn't purchase it. Really would have missed out!

Not your typical love triangle. See, in contemporary books you find the boys fawning all over the girl. Not here! It's so sweet and pure. LOL, I fell in love with Justin. I never hope the girl will pick the other guy. However, I AM hoping that Justin does find Mia or another Morai girl. He's just so sweet. Okay, so, that doesn't speak much to the book I don't suppose. But, this love of his is balanced by the tragedy that Diana faces is the stark side of reality. I hope that she can one day find love that restores the heart!

At the end of boook 1, I debated whether to even purchase book 2. As another said, 2nds don't always do well by me. I'm SO glad I did! At the end of it, I couldn't wait to get book #3. A great story...well written & greatly enjoyed!

I love Casey's writing and the beautiful and scary world she's created in Archer. I wasn't the biggest fan of how long the characters were in the forest at the beginning of the book. I wanted the characters to hurry and get to Eden/Jordan. And I felt like conversations were repeated. But who cares. I love Kate and Ian and their search for meaning and purpose. I love the spiritual journey they're on and how Casey sneaks in religion without being preachy or overbearing. I'm excited to see what happens in Master. I've already started it and I'm just loving the writing. Ms. Hays is one of my favorites.

OH.MY.HEART! Picking up right where Breeder left off, Archer immediately pulls you back into the story and the tragedy that you feel a part of. This author has a wonderful way making you feel like you are there and part of this story. You are connected with all the characters in friendship, love, hate, anger, and despair. The intensity picks up a notch in this second book of the series. We get to see a little from Ian’s perspective, and I loved that! We also get to meet some new characters, and get to know some of the others better. A lot of information is revealed here, but you also have more questions. And the end! Oh man, I gotta go read The Master like right now!
