In New Mexico, in 1884, spirits disturb the world of the living.

Madrid Arrende does not have her late mother’s power to exorcise ghosts, but the Mexican peasants who live on or around her wealthy father’s hacienda believe that she has inherited Celesta’s supernatural abilities. In fact, her mother’s fame has even reached the hostile Apaches, who kidnap Maddie in the hope that she can banish the vicious, vengeful spirit terrorizing their village. Proud and violent even in life, Uday murdered the father of Sacheen, the woman he wanted, when the father refused to force Sacheen to wed him. Sacheen’s brother killed Uday in a fair fight, but the spurned brave refused to move on to the spirit world. Instead, the vicious wraith threatens the entire tribe in his lust to possess Sacheen, even from beyond the grave.

Deacon and Gideon Bannister live with a different sort of ghost. Seven years ago, an Apache war party attacked their ranch, killed their parents and abducted their sisters Callie and Tess. The brothers can’t rest until they’ve tracked down the missing young women. In fact, Deacon broke off his engagement with Maddie because he felt that the search for his sisters had to take first priority.

Nevertheless, when Madrid’s father enlists Deacon’s aid in recovering his daughter, Deacon quickly agrees. He has realized his mistake in rejecting the beautiful, independent young woman. Though she is now engaged to someone else, Deacon is determined not only to save her from the Indians, but to win back her love – if the tribe, or the demonic Uday, do not kill them first.

Chasing the Dead is a short but satisfying Western romance with a generous dash of the paranormal. In fact, I’m not usually a fan of the Western genre, which tends toward stereotypes and anachronisms. However, Keta Diablo obviously did extensive research for this book, especially with regard to Apache language and customs. I’m no expert, but the book feels genuine.

The plot is surprisingly complex and the cast of characters more extensive than I’d expect in a book of only 110 pages (in epub format). Even the minor characters, such as Nasario the Mexican shaman and the Bannister’s youngest brother Sefton, have some depth. The main protagonists are both distinctive and appealing. In particular, I loved the portrayal of Sacheen. She’s fierce and loyal, with a world view that contrasts with that of the whites and the Mexicans.

Probably my favorite aspect of Chasing the Dead was the chilling and vivid depictions of the ghost and the underworld. The Apache version of Hell looks quite different from our Western version. I loved the intensity and the originality.

The book does merit the label of romance. It’s no surprise when Madrid breaks off her engagement to cleave to Deacon, or when Gideon and Sacheen fall in love. However, the romantic and erotic aspects of the novel were overshadowed, for me, by the fascinating cultural details and the supernatural elements.

I have one complaint about the book. I felt that the chapters were too short. I understand the author’s intentions. She is juggling four major characters, and needs to alternate among them in order to get her story told. However, because she spends only three or four pages in each perspective, I ended up feeling a bit rushed – almost out of breath.

Still, Ms. Diablo does an excellent job tying all the threads together – and laying the foundations for a sequel, without leaving the reader on the edge of cliff. Overall, I definitely enjoyed Chasing the Dead.

This novel is a compelling story of two brothers, Deacon and Gideon, who survived the destruction of their ranch and death of their parents years ago at the hands of Apaches, and their two women, Madrid and Sacheen, characters with their own tortured histories. Deacon’s, Gideon’s, and their other brothers’ two sisters are missing, kidnapped, and even after all these years, they intend on finding them. This motivation will drive many of their actions into dangerous territory.

When Madrid, Deacon’s ex-fiancé, gets kidnapped, Deacon’s problems increase severalfold. Their history is sad. They loved each other, but he walked away from her because he needed to concentrate on finding his sisters. However, their mutual feelings continue. Now Deacon must rescue Madrid. Will their love be rekindled?

When Deacon gets captured by the Apaches who hold Madrid, sparks fly between him and his former love. The adventure picks up. Sacheen, an Apache woman, enters the scene. Cultural tidbits are interspersed throughout the story to add depth and understanding. Deacon, Madrid, and Sacheen have a supernatural enemy trying to kill them. How can one defeat such an opponent?

When they go up against this enemy, their lives are put on the line. Gideon comes along to complicate things, and his feelings for Sacheen and hers for him add a nice subplot to the novel. The book is well written with a sense of urgency. Readers of Western romantic paranormals are sure to enjoy this exciting tale.

In 1884 New Mexico, Madrid (Maddie) Arrende, the independent daughter of a wealthy rancher, insists on going with the men to drive the cattle across the river. Although her father warns her to stay home, she refuses to shelter at the hacienda while her ranch hands take the risk. Apache warriors capture her, not because she is a woman, but because they have learned she can talk to a chidn, or spirit. There’s just one problem. Maddie’s mother had the ability to speak to ghosts, but Maddie can’t.

Deacon Bannister has one mission, to rescue his sisters from the Apaches who kidnapped them seven years ago when they attacked his parents. He and his brother Gideon have searched for their sisters everywhere but haven’t found them.

Deacon and Maddie fell in love. They planned to marry but he abandoned her at the altar a year ago because he couldn’t allow himself to find happiness while his sisters were in captivity.

Despite Maddie’s engagement to Emmet, a prominent businessman, when Deacon hears of Maddie’s abduction, he goes after her. While her fiancé stays behind to run his business, Deacon tracks the group and finds Maddie, but they seize him in the process.

When Maddie meets Sacheen, a beautiful young woman ostracized from the tribe because the chidn follows her, they team up. First, they free Deacon, then head back to the hacienda.

After Sacheen fights with Gideon, who has followed his brother, and shows up in the middle of the night while Sacheen is on guard, they call an uneasy truce. The four work together to save themselves from the evil ghost intent on making Sacheen his own.

Maddie is my favorite kind of heroine, strong, feisty and smart rather than overly stubborn. She is not a pushover for Deacon, who has hurt her deeply, but she realizes she needs all the help she can get in order to survive.

Deacon is a principled man who sometimes does the wrong thing for noble reasons. I can forgive him his flaws because his heart is in the right place. His lack of perfection makes him realistic and relatable.

Sacheen is fascinating because not only is she the one in the most danger, but she must cope with a totally unfamiliar environment while having to depend on strangers who have been traditional enemies. Her survival depends on figuring out who she can trust and adapting to an alien world with no time to adjust. She does all this with courage and grace and is another capable woman I admired.

Gideon is a minor character in this book, but will no doubt have his own story. I can’t wait to read it.

This novel is intended to be the first in a new series about the Bannister brothers. I hope Ms. Diablo releases the second one soon. I loved the characters, setting and blend of western and paranormal romance. Historical details, a glimpse into Apache and Mexican cultures of the time, and a diverse group of men and women working together as equals makes Chasing the Dead a must read.

Unusual love story

I liked the Indian/ Western surroundings, and I was able to visualize the characters easily..I guess the steamy parts were to help " flesh out" the story, but it would have been good without them. The paranormal part was quite inventive , a breath of fresh air from the usual "ghosties". Good job!

This is a great western story with vaqueros, cowbays and indians. The Bannister brothers still seek their sisters kidnapped by Apaches, and go after the daughter of a neighbor stolen by a nearby tribe to chase away an evil spirit. T he characters are realistic and the writing is easy to read. Much of the narrative involves paranormal, but the story is well worth reading.

Madrid Arrende is a young woman of Mexican descent who has inherited her mother’s abilities to communicate with the dead. She’s beautiful and feisty, set to inherit the large prosperous ranch which her father has built up from nothing. She is engaged to marry a weak and pasty town boy, but has known love and lust in the past, thanks to a rugged cowboy named Deacon Bannister. A woman with her fire and her future needs a Deacon Bannister by her side; we all know this. But how will they come together?
Chasing the Dead gave me everything I have come to expect from a good western romance: strong, likeable heroines, desert sunsets and palpable settings I could lose myself in, and Most Important Of All, that dreamy lustable male character. Deacon is everything a western hero should be: strong, manly, outdoorsy (he breaks horses), rugged, stubborn, insanely handsome, and ever so swoonfully dedicated to the one love of his life. (Of course, in real life, who could live with a man like this? BUT, that’s why we have book boyfriends. They stay in their books where they belong, forever hot, twenty-something, and forever the ardent lover.)
Now for the rest of the story. I was a little unsure of the ‘communicating with spirits’ bit, but this was very well done. The spirits were sit within the context of Native American beliefs. I am far from an expert in this culture, but knowing Ms Diablo, she will have done her background research and traditional customs will have been drawn on. The Spanish certainly was spot on, except for one instance where it stood out like a sore thumb - and then I realised that a gringo was speaking, and it made me laugh instead.
I loved that the main character came from a Mexican background. I liked reading about a heroine whose skin was not alabaster. She spoke a lot of Spanish and her home had a very strong Catholic influence. It was very substantial, and believable.
There were other likeable characters too. Deacon’s brother and the Apache girl who Madrid becomes friends with are both strong, three dimensional characters with their own back stories and their own motivations.
The story arc is nicely done, and I would expect nothing less from Ms Diablo. Her character introduction is splendid, and the story builds with the usual crests to the climax, and a well-earned happily ever after.
All in all, there is very little that is new here, which fans of this genre will be relieved to hear. Ms Diablo has kept the romance bones in the usual order- ankle connected to shin then knee etc etc - and fleshed them out with an Apache / Mexican / Cowboy overlay. Which I really like. The paranormal thread sews all three together very nicely, and not too weirdly, which I can’t handle (I’m not much into zombies and everyone turning into werewolves). The finished story is the one we all demand - of love, lust, romance, strength and individuality - whilst also giving us a beautiful underlying story of ethnic co-existence and co-dependence.
And that’s the story I really appreciated here.

Awesome Indies Book Awards is pleased to include CHASING THE DEAD (Bannister Brothers) by KETA DIABLO in the library of Awesome Indies' Badge of Approval recipients.

Original Awesome Indies' Assessment (4 stars):

What a fantastically original plot and story idea! If you like westerns, American history, the native American Indians or just want a read with some seriously sexy Bannister boys (cowboys!!), well then this one is for you.

The plot moved along at a cracking pace, it kept me interested and had plenty of action. There are bigger plot arcs that aren’t really finished in this one, which gives Keta plenty of opportunity to bring these boys and girls back for more. I loved the female characters, Maddie and Sacheen are headstrong and know themselves well. It was a lovely thing to see strong women in a romance novel with such strong males.

The mixing of Indian folklore/beliefs with Mexican and Christian beliefs worked really well. Given the setting, and the little Indian translation list at the start I was initially concerned that there’d be too much in Indian or Mexican and I’d miss plot points because I don’t speak/read either. Thankfully, Keta took care of me, and the different languages ended up giving the story a lovely exotic spice, without being too much. There wasn’t any point where I didn’t understand what was going on.

There were a couple of points that bothered me (hence the 3.5-4 star rating). I disliked how easily it was for Uday to lure Sacheen away from the rest of them (it seemed a little too convenient that Maddie knew the answers but it’d slipped her mind to share with someone else), and it was a little rushed at the ending. Minor things really, just the last rough edges of an otherwise enjoyable read. The manuscript needed another once over, to catch some minor typos, but it was mostly really well written.

I would recommend it for romance lovers, paranormal fans and general readers who are interested in an engaging plot, strong characters and action with a fantastic setting.

I received this book free of charge from the author in return for an honest review.

This book has it all, romance, paranormal, and sexy cowboys!! Deacon and Gideon are on a quest to find their two sisters that were kidnapped by Comanche. Deacon is hell bent on finding them no matter the cost, but when the woman he loves is kidnapped he will do what it takes to find her too. Madrid (Maddie) loves to ride and help her fathers workers with the animals, against her fathers wishes. While out they are attacked by Apache. Maddie is taken, but not to be a captive, everyone around knows her mother was able to chase away ghosts. Maddie's father sends word to Deacon that he needs help. When Deacon arrives he finds out that Maddie is not engaged to a businessman, one that is too refined to even think about going out to save her. Deacon plans on taking a bunch of goods and trade for her.

Maddie is place in a hut, where she meets Sacheen, a Apache maiden. Sacheen explains why Maddie was brought there, to chase away a evil spirit that keeps attacking the village. But before they can get into details, word comes there is a white man there to trade for Maddie. While Maddie and Sacheen try to save Deacon, the evil spirit attacks. The Chief kicks all 3 out of the village. Now they must get back to Maddie's fathers with a evil ghost bent on revenge after them.

I must say this book surprised me, and not in a bad way. I hadn't expected it to pack such a punch. I've always been a sucker for characters that have an unrelenting passion and one that won't quit no matter what obstacle is thrown their way. And Maddie and Deacon did not disappoint in this aspect. Their connection is so palpable you can literally feel it.

But that's not the only reason I would rate this a 5 star book. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this wasn't just a western romance. It also has paranormal elements as well. Of which I won't delve into too much to avoid spoilers, but suffice it to say that this book didn't disappoint.

I highly recommend Chasing the Dead by Keta Diablo for anyone who loves a great romance and a riveting plot line!

I wish I could say that I was surprised by this book, but I'm not. Although I have only read one other book by this author I have to come to realize that at a time when most authors leave too much to the reader's imagination and power of assumption when it comes to stories, Diablo takes the time to make sure the reader fully understands the how and why of every character and their motivation. Never once did I have that ever present "WTF" moment where I wondered what the characters could possibly be thinking.

Although far from a short story, I found myself unable to put this novel down once I got started. I found it engaging and entertaining. With never a dull moment, I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
