Karma's a Beach

Rate this book
It’s bad enough I have to fly home for a funeral.

Not just any funeral, either. My ex’s funeral. Where I have to give the eulogy.

Let’s just say he was an ex for a reason, and I’d much rather write a speech about his flaws than wax poetic about what a great person he was. But I just couldn’t bring myself to say no to his mom when she asked.

So here we are.

I just have to get through the funeral, and then it’s a whole month of relaxing on the beach with my oldest friends.

But of course, nothing ever goes according to plan.

Entitled passengers, flight delays, lost luggage. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. And I might have had a little too much wine and spilled my entire life story to the man in the seat next to me. The incredibly nice, incredibly sexy man sitting next to me.

It’s a good thing I’ll likely never see him again.

Or so I thought.

The stranger who awkwardly comforts me at my ex’s funeral? Airplane guy.

And I’ll give you one guess about who shows up at the beach house.

Kill. Me. Now.

This was supposed to be a relaxing vacation, but now I have to worry about how attracted I am to a man who knows entirely too much about me and only seems to catch me at my absolute worst.

Or maybe I’ll get lucky and he’ll be into hot messes.

I've read/listened to many books by Samantha and they are usually told in the 3rd (with one narrator), so I'm thrilled for the 1st person this time.

Olivia (Liv) & Sebastian (Ash) meet on a flight and have no clue they're on the way to the same funeral. The deceased is her ex~boyfriend that cheated on her and his college roommate. And then they're thrown for a loop again when it looks like they'll be vacationing together right after with a few of their friends.

If I’m rating this just based on our FMC/MMC then this was super cute. I loved the ease with which their relationship was from start to finish. I felt the chemistry and their banter was good. I wasn’t overly in love with her friends, but this seems like it’ll be a start to a series, so I’m sure I’ll give em a whirl.

Narration notes:
Yay for 2! They both sounded pretty good.

My first from this author, this book was such a delightful surprise!
The writing is so good you can't stop turning the pages, a lovely story, loveable characters, amazing banter, with all your favorite tropes and of course a happy ending! ❣️

Although there are 4 best friends and their significant others, the story is about Olivia (Liv) a writer and Sebastian (Ash) a network architec.
They meet at the airport and they're both going to the same place for a funeral, Liv her ex-boyfriend Matt who broke her heart a long time ago, Ash a friend from college.

She's having a bad day, adding to it Matt's mother asked her to write her son eulogy.
Ash seating next to her in the plane, does everything he can to help her relax, suggests what she could write and she confides in him.
So cute!🫠🫠
And guess what?
The ex and Ash's friend is the same person: Matt!

After this sad event, she and her 3 best friends, Van, Roxie and Loren, were spending a month's vacation at the Van's family beach house.
And what she gets besides her BFs is 2 boyfriends, 3 dogs and Ash in her used to be room! 😟😟

She's having a writer's block and if she can't sleep, because she is with the dogs, she can't write!

And that's when the fake dating with Ash starts!
He's hot, sexy as hell with his Clark Kent glasses, kind, nice, sweet, tender, has a solution for almost everyting and he's also an exceptional kisser!!
Damn there goes the fake dating! 😂😂

The chemistry, the connection, the tenderness, the sparks when they touch, is phenomenal!
They fall maddly in love and Ash, the hot nerd, will find all the solutions necessary for both their different lives keep them together and have their karma approved HEA!
😍😍😍😍

Loved it so much! ❤️❣️❤️

I've really liked Karma's a Beach by Samantha Chase. The storyline and the execution were enjoyable, the ending perfect, and the karma's theme intriguing.

Olivia has to go to her ex funeral, her flights are a nightmare until she meets Sebastian, a cute Superman look alike, who makes her feel better. This is only the begin of their story, because little they know they will meet again soon.

I instantly swooned over Ash. He is such a good man, more on the shy, introvert type, but he is the right guy for our stressed, closed off heroine. Liv and Ash realationship is easygoing and comfortable from the start, it seems like fate just blessed them.

The beach cartoonish cover and the title caught my eye, I thought this novel was a humorous rom com, but Samantha Chase put into it a lot of emotions and thoughts that made it unputdownable.

What a cute summer read! Karma's a Beach was my first book written by Samantha Chase and it certainly wouldn't be the last. The premise was intriguing and I absolutely loved how the main characters, Olivia ("Liv") and Sebastian ("Ash"), met for the first time. I meant, airport scenes were my ultimate favorites and their encounter was one of a kind. Besides, Ash was hands-down the champion in all cinnamon roll heroes out there. He was honestly the sweetest, the most thoughtful, and the gentlest man I'd ever seen and I secretly hoped I'd find myself someone like him in real life. *smiled sheepishly* All in all, the writing made it easy to immerse myself in the story and before I knew it, Liv and Ash got the happy ending I had no complaints about. Generally, this book was a perfect beach read with hilarious banters, off-the-charts chemistry, and unforgettable characters. If you were looking for a feel-good romcom, look no further! Go pick this one up and you could thank me later. :D

Liv is asked to deliver the eulogy at her toxic ex’s funeral, and she’s struggling with what to say. On the returning to a small town trip from hell, Liv meets Ash on the flight home and sparks fly. With a meet cute like this, you know you are in for a fun ride. This was a sweet romance that was so satisfying. The story was well thought out, the characters were so lovable, and the narrators were well chosen. This is the first book that I have read from this author, and I was not disappointed. I absolutely recommend this one.

This was a sweet story about Liv and Ash.

When Liv has to fly to her hometown to give a eulogy for her ex boyfriend, she never expects to meet Ash. And then run into him again. And another time after that.

Liv and Ash worked so well together. They had an instant attraction that the grew into so much more. I loved seeing how they surpassed obstacles together.

The narrators were really good! Would definitely listen to more of them.

4.5 ⭐️’s ⛱️ ARC Review⛱️ This was my first ever book by Samantha Chase, and I absolutely ate it up and left zero crumbs! Olivia (FMC), I swear I felt that if she didn’t have bad luck, she’d have no luck (Girl, I can relate lol). She’s a writer who’s found herself in a bit of a slump when she’s asked by her ex-boyfriend Matt’s mother to write his eulogy. Yep, you read that right, his eulogy! Olivia isn’t a fan (again, I can relate), and her flight back home to give said eulogy and a much needed beach vacation is an absolute disaster. However, she befriends a beautiful stranger, Ash (Sebastian, MMC), who is just an absolute beautiful soul from the start. Little did either of them know, not only would they meet again at Matt’s funeral but Ash too would be vacationing at the same beach house. The chemistry between Olivia and Ash was undeniable from their first interactions to the very end. If your a fan of beach rom-coms, that pull l at your heart strings, make you laugh and packs some heat! Karma’s a Beach is a must for your summer TBR!

The book is boring by itself I'm NGL but after 30% I can't stop noticing how much FMC's friends don't care about her boundaries, lie to her, manipulate her, and one of her guy friends thinks it's her fault she repeatedly got cheated on WHILE this whole friend group was friends with her ex. They don't care about her comfort and boundaries at all. It's like they don't respect her. I really liked the MMC but there's not much to it. The fake dating trope is soo forced. And then the FMC says she herself was her ex's side chick once and karma hit her. It's all so icky, like it's come straight out of Netflix Euphoria or something.
This book isn't for me.

The most boring book I ever read! No ups and downs to the relationship and they get together pretty early. The characters are incredibly blant. Urgh.

I will say the first quarter was fine but it went downhill from there. The moment they kissed I knew I did not care. No chemistry. Nothing!

3.5 hearts

If you are ever going to have a slight emotional breakdown on a plane on the way to your Ex boyfriend's funeral, it helps to sit next to a cute, nice and very patient man to tell all your woes after a few glasses of wine.  Karma's a Beach is currently a standalone romance following Olivia and Sebastian as they have an awkward meet cute on a plane and then find out they were both headed to the same funeral of Olivia's Ex and Sebastian's college roommate along with friend group trip to the beach afterward.

Liv is a writer struggling to accept she needs to change up her comfort genre for her publisher.  She needs to plot out her next book and has a bit of writer's block.  It doesn't help that she also agreed to write the eulogy for her Ex-boyfriend after his mom called and requested it.  How can you say no to a grieving mother.  However, Liv is trying to balance the truth of who her Ex was with kindness and sometimes that is hard to find after someone broke your heart. Sebastian/Ash helps Liv find a way to make it true but also kind.

Liv thought after the plane ride they were going their separate ways.  That was until she finds out that Ash and a few others guys were invited on the girl's trip to the beach she thought she was going on to reset and get her book outline drafted.  While not excited to have to share her girl time, she is a little excited that Ash is one of the men in question.

This is a cute romance.  There are some moments where I had to suspend my disbelief a little as Olivia sometimes jumps way to the left or right and picks some of the most ridiculous solutions to her problems.  Ash is cute to just go along with it and I could see how they were a good fit. She is impetuous and goofy while he has a planned methodology to everything he does.  As different friend group drama unfolds, they are thrown together time and time again.  But what happens when the vacation is over and Ash goes back to work and Liv goes back to her life on the other side of the country.

I liked the conclusion to the story and the growth the Liv finally gets to.  It was good to see her realize some things about her friends, their past and where they are headed in the future.  Sebastian was adorable really and probably a little too good to be true.  Liv was a bit manic and whiny in the beginning but at least she recognized that about herself and was determined to change her mindset.

Overall a cute romance with a satisfying conclusion.  It seems like there has been a set up for another book in this series highlighting one of the friends but we will see if they are the main players in a future book.

Narration:
Performance: ★★★★
Character Separation: ★★★★
Diction: ★★★★
Pacing/Flow: ★★★
Sound Effects: none

Penelope Ann Rose and Andre Bellido are both new to me narrators.  They fit the characters they were portraying well and most of the time the story flowed well.  I will say that for me the only time that wasn't the case was during the sex scenes, they felt cheesy and for me were slightly distracting.  I'm not sure if that is a narration issue or just how the scenes were written.  All other parts of the narration  were immersive and worked well for me.

This is Olivia and Ash’s story.
Olivia is flying home for her ex’s funeral, where his mom has asked to give the eulogy, but whatever can happen on the journey, happens. Ash is also flying home for a funeral, and he comforts Liv at the funeral. Looking forward to a month-long vacation with her oldest friends, turns into more when the guys all arrive, and Ash is with them.
This is a well written easy to read, emotionally charged story, with drama, friendships, opposites attract, close proximity, fake relationship, romance, revelation, humor, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, unpredictable, and fun, addictive page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

I listened to this in one sitting at work. It's very cute and not heavy, which I really appreciated after the crazy that's happened this week in the world.

The narration is fantastic. Liv and Ash are portrayed perfectly. I loved the frienships too. They came off very genuine as they didn't always get along and they knew when each other needed space, etc.

The only thing I didn't care for is it's very very VERY insta-love and very little conflict, so that brought the rating down for me some. I just needed more.

Thanks so much to Samantha Chase, Dreamscape Media, and NetGalley for allowing me to listen and review!

Narrated by Penelope Ann Rose, Andre Bellido

First quarter? Cute and quick—like a little beach read should be. Then midway it started dragging like it was being pulled through drying concrete. Way too many irrelevant details and filler that added nothing to the story. Honestly, even narrator Andre Bellido sounded like he was over it—rushing through vapid descriptions like he just wanted out. A disappointing slump after a promising start.

Why not use your ex-boyfriends funeral as the kicking off point to a girls trip? And while your on the plane on the way to the funeral a cute guy sits next to you he's also travelling for a funeral. You chat and tell him about all your woes because you are struggling to write a eulogy for your ex who was a great friend, but horrible boyfriend.

Surprise surprise Sebastian (cute dude) is also at the ex-boyfriends funeral and surprise surprise again Olivia (fmc) has been hoodwinked and it's not a girl's trip at all. There are 3 dudes as well and one if them is Sebastian.

So the girls trip turns into a co-ed beach vacation and a bit of forced proximity and fake dating gets Olivia and Sebastian together.

I really liked the start of this book, but I started to lose interest just before the halfway mark and the book didn't really grip me from there.

It was okay, but there was a whole lot of drama that just seemed weird to me. I still think it's worth a read.

Thank you for providing me with an ARC so I could read Karmas a Beach and leave an honest review.

Olivia is a successful author struggling with writer’s block who’s asked to deliver a eulogy for her ex-boyfriend before heading off on a month long, girls-only vacation with her best friends. On the flight, she ends up spilling her deepest, darkest secrets to the handsome stranger in the next to her. Turns out said stranger, Sebastian, is not only a friend of her late ex, but also one of the guys invited to the same beach trip—unbeknownst to Olivia…Cue awkwardness, banter, and potential sparks!

Karma’s a Beach started off strong, with a quirky, offbeat charm, but around the 40% mark, I found myself losing interest. The chemistry between Olivia and Sebastian never really clicked for me, and I struggled with the long, overdrawn monologues that often pulled me out of the story. I understand the intent was to give background and insight into the characters’ thought processes, but it ended up feeling more like filler than depth.

I did enjoy the silly, lighthearted vibes, and I think this could work well for readers looking for a fun, quick rom-com that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The audiobook narrators were solid, though not enough to fully keep me hooked, and I admittedly ended up skimming some sections.

All in all, this one just wasn’t for me, but if you’re in the mood for a quirky, fun rom-com exactly as advertised, this one might hit the spot!

Thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

A really good read that had me caught up in the outcomes for all the characters, not just Olivia and Sebastian's though I so wanted them to get the best HEA!. It is stacked with so many different emotions, from mirth, warmth, sorrow, to confusion over how to feel and react to an unexpected situation. Liv and Sebastian's initial meeting during airport and plane issues, sees them instantantly drawn into an easy, companionable relationship that acknowledges their attraction to each other, but without the expectation of a further meeting. But, no, that's not what is going to happen. The central conceit that draws these two together is the untimely death of Matt, Liv's ex, and, unbeknownst to Liv, Sebastian's friend. What follows is the coming together of friends for the funeral, followed by a holiday ....
I felt so drawn to the warmth and vulnerabilities of both these MMCs. Both Liv and Ash are lovely characters.
There are residual feelings to process, previously unspoken resentments between old friends and the gradual shifting of perspectives. These are all well done and underline unresolved weaknesses and strengths of longtime friendships that haven't delved into deeper feelings. Honesty has not always been at the forefront of their dealings with each other. Overall, it's a really good, emotionally satisfying read. 💖💖💖💖

I really enjoyed Ash and Liv’s very unconventional romance! Their meeting was serendipitous even though the circumstances putting them next to each other weren’t the best. You quickly fall for them and their story and can’t help but get giddy over just how perfect they are for each other even before they see it themselves. ❤️ when he surprised her at the airport and his idea for her next book inspo… SWOOOOONN 🥰😍… he is just so good!

I always love reading Samantha Chase’s books because the fade to black romance is refreshening to read. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some spicy books- it just isn’t always necessary or beneficial to the story. Samantha’s stories don’t “need” the open door spice to make you feel all the emotions or build up her characters, she does a great job of making sure you get every bit of those things without it.

Also, let me say Liv’s friends totally did her shitty. I knew from the moment Vanessa was bent out of shape about leaving earlier that something shady was happening. I would have left and went back. They clearly didn’t trust that she would even be there so they made alternative plans that didn’t involve her. BUT, the hash out later that went down was perfect in the story, it was a satisfying call out for them all! 🤣

Karma’s a Beach. That’s the saying, right?

This book focuses a lot on Karma, or what the FMC perceives her karma to be. She learns from her friends that karma doesn’t always have to be bad, and that there is such a thing as good karma.

I loved how there was a meet-cute in the beginning and that it carried over throughout the book. The connections between the friend group is too cute, and I love that their friendships have transcended through time and space.

I also liked reading from the POV of a writer as a MC, it gave good insights to the process of writing and how inspiration can come from anywhere, even an idea that your boyfriend gives you! It is something that I am not at all familiar with because I do not have a creative bone in my body.

It’s the perfect summer read, sweet, funny, with a bit of romance and DRAMA - because getting a bunch of girls together is the literal definition of disaster.

This is the very recipe of a rom-com. It was a little silly, but I suppose it was cute. The characters were relatable and very likeable. It made sense why they were all friends, but like real life, they at times got on each other’s nerves. The premise of the story was actually adorable and clever, nothing I’ve read before.

There were so many long stretches of the characters monologuing how they felt. It was a bit much. It wasn’t the longest book, however, there were many parts that felt like the book was never-ending.

The narrators were listed as Penelope Ann Rose and Willem Bloom. Although they both had numerous characters to narrate for, they both had moments where they fell a little flat for me.

In the end, this was a great “palate cleanser” for me. There were parts where I laughed, and a number of parts that I 100% could relate to the female friends and group. All in all, a cute rom-com.

Thank you NetGalley for this ARC! I always enjoy a fun read!

Karma's a Beach is the perfect end of summer read. The audiobook really made the story come to life and the characters were voiced perfectly!

A forced proximity summer romance with deep roots of loss, friendship, and personal development. This book took me in and I really enjoyed it!

Flying home to attend her Ex's funeral, took on a new turn of love, and growth. I really enjoyed the plot of this book and the insight on grief. It was really special to see the friend's reaction to the loss of Matt and how the MFC relates or differs from her friends. Grief is different for everyone and I found it a great representation of that. Even though at the core of this is a funeral. It only adds a deep level to the characters and still allows the book to be a fun summer read outside of that event.

I really enjoyed the story and look forward to reading more books by Samanatha Chase. Thank you kindly to Net Galley for the ARC for this audiobook!

Strangers meeting on a flight and turns out they are both attending the same funeral. Matteo was Olivia's ex boyfriend and was asked to write the eulogy while Ash/Sebastian was a friend from college.

There were just some thing that were a little odd as a plot. 1. The beginning scene of Olivia on the plane. I was not aware that people actually think they would be entitled to a first class seat because they asked nicely. This was just odd for me. 2. Why would Matteo's mom asked an ex-girlfriend to write a Eulogy and not of his friends and 3. Olivia and how she feels about her friends. I have friends that I have I known for years and never felt left out despite living in another state.

Despite these odd plots of me, the story was enjoyable. I enjoyed the dual narration by Penelope Ann Rose and Willem Bloom. I do wish Ash had a little more depth. He felt very flat for me.

I do enjoy that there was no 3rd act breakup.

Thank you @dreamscape_media for a copy of the audiobook.

Rom Com done right! Insta-attraction, close proximity, fake date all combined to lead to insta-love! She's a hot mess and he's the ultimate nice guy, or are they what they first appear? Do first appearances really give you a real look at a person or is that a fallacy? However, coincidence or fate, keeps throwing them together so they have a chance to get to know each other better! A vacation that throws a lot of personalities together can lead to a fun time or an explosive one! Lots of laughter, lots of angst and a bit of everything in between. This is the fun beach read that you should absolutely read, although I highly recommend that you listen to the audiobook as the dual narration really brings the characters to life and made the events even more impactful. I find audiobooks heighten the emotions of the characters when the narration is good and this narration is fabulous!

I initially thought "wow what a cute cover for a nice summer, beach read!". While that still remains true..it was a nice summer, beachy feel... it was actually a little deeper than I thought it would be.

I absolutely loved the meet cute in the beginning with Ash and Liv, that whole scenario made everything fall into place so nicely! Ash is such a cinnamon roll of a man... so sweet and cute. The chemistry between Liv and Ash was great and I was all for their journey together!
The group of friends were so realistic, everyone had their own thing going on and not only that but they eventually have a bit of drama that is literally all-too-real.

This was actually a first read for me by this author so I really had no idea what I was getting into but very much enjoyed Samantha Chase's writing style and storytelling and will most definitely be grabbing more of her books!

A cute and fun story of how being in the right place at the right time can affect your future. When Liv meets Ash on the flight taking her to her ex's funeral, she doesn't expect him to turn up to said event himself. And it turns out he knows her friends too. Spending time with Ash, she can't help but get close to him. He's everything she's ever wanted in a guy but he lives so far away - can they make it work? With laugh out loud moments and a sweet storyline (and some spice too!), I devoured this book. The audiobook narration was fantastic.

This was a good light summer read. The chemistry between the two main characters felt really natural. Any time they had a miscommunication they talked about it right away like adults which was refreshing, and I liked that even though it started as “fake” dating, neither of them pretended that they didn’t have feelings for each other and they let themselves be drawn to the other. I also appreciated the fact that the conflict was external to the relationship, I get really tired of reading a third act breakup.

I am a huge Samantha Chase fan. I read everything she has released.
This book felt different. Rushed. If you aren’t familiar with her writing you will not notice.
I enjoyed this book and the way in which the characters are woven together. Ash and Liv met completely by chance and didn’t know that they were delicately woven together by a power no longer on this earth.

Meet cute on a plane meets second meet cute at a funeral. What ensues is a series of karmic events in this beachy romcom.

Our main character is asked to write the eulogy at a funeral. While on the plane she meets a man that will change the trajectory of her entire life.

This book has all the feels! It’s cozy and romantic and makes you think of life in a different way. I really enjoyed the banter between our main characters and the relationship our main female has with her friends.
