In the quiet village of Southwell, the woods appear unremarkable to most. But Aveline Johnson has always had a connection to them.
After her death, her granddaughter, Fern, becomes determined to uncover the truth buried deep among the trees, convinced that the secrets of her past are rooted there.
In the woods, she finds a realm that no human has entered before - a world of woodland fae with their own secrets, dangers, and desires.
As Fern searches for answers, she begins to accept that she may not get what she came for, but perhaps something even more powerful.
With a looming threat closing in on her new home, Fern must make the choice. Will she return to the safety of her old life and leave the magic of the woods behind, or will she stay and fight for the world, and the man, that she has come to love?
𝗿𝗲-𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 2025: Honestly, I loved the version I read last year and did think I’d love it anymore - I was wrong.
Jess has crafted such a beautiful and wholesome story, with well thought out characters and the most beautiful descriptions. There were moments I did not see coming, and relationships which developed under my nose lending itself to the perfect sequel.
This debut is both whimsical and beautiful; I was fully invested in Fern’s development as a character, seeing her push through her own expectations, and was in love with Oak (a blonde MMC can you believe!) from the get go. I mean he kisses her on the head - swoon. The perfect blend of grumpy x sunshine. The side characters play such a huge part too, and I look forward to meeting them again.
I excitedly waited for the slow burn to reach boiling point - it did not disappoint. And the conclusion of the story welcomed tears to my eyes, and a very grateful heart.
I still stand by what I said before; after reading this book, you will never look at the woods the same way.

Read this as a Beta reader last summer, and honestly it was sublime. Whimsical and beautiful, with heart and relatable characters - even hidden in the depths of the woodland!
“𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘤 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘪𝘵” And magic is what this book is! The perfect escape into the woods, with beautiful writing, creative world building and a wonderful plot. This cosy fantasy read has real heart and doesn’t shy away from emotion, so get the tissues ready! The characters are so relatable, even if most of them are fae, and Fern and Oak make great leads. And don’t get me started on the incredible side characters that really make this book shine! Found family and learning to be vulnerable, to trust and love people again, is a huge part of this story and having only finished two days ago, I find myself missing the gang already! From banter between the boys to getting each other out of sticky situations. From experiencing a cruel and heart breaking loss to finding a new family of hot fae with amazing magic. From experiencing heightened passion in The Violet Oasis to revelations that will make your jaw hit the floor (really that last 30% or so had me in a chokehold and I couldn’t put it down). This story takes you on a journey and I can’t wait to see where it’s heading next! Having watched Jess go through all the emotions of writing this novel in the last 18 months, seeing all her hard work payoff is just wonderful! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be on your arc team! We’re all proud of you and your extremely clever brain and congratulations on an incredible debut!
This book is the perfect cosy summer romantasy, it’s full of heart (and fae 😉) and took me right back to pixie hollow!
I cried reading the very first chapter (prologue!) and couldn’t put it down the entire time- take me to Southwell Woods ASAP🌲🌳
I absolutely adored the side characters throughout this book, Puck is my GUY! (Roll on book 2 🤭) he is cheeky and sassy and mischievous but sweet and rugged 👀 I also adored the twins’ storyline, their growth and friendship with Fern was just beautiful
For the book to be a 5🌟 for me it could have done with a little more depth of character and story, a few more adjectives here and there really!
I could really feel myself in the book, meeting the twists as they came, attending the violet oasis ball (yes please!!!! 💜), witnessing magic spiralling in unexpected places and feeling so genuinely content
Take a chance on one of our own, a DEBUT INDIE author, soon to be a bestseller no doubt and fall in love 🫶
Absolutely adored this book. As a huge fantasy and romance lover it hit all the write spots for me. It’s such an addictive read and I can’t wait to reread to be with Fern and Oak once more. Well done for creating such a masterpiece Jessica, we need more please.
I read the OG as a beta reader and loved it. I know Jess has made changes so I’m buzzing for the release on 01/07 and got my preorder sorted 🙌🏻
updated: I've read the published version (which I bought). Here is my review:
I last read Finding Fern in or around summer 2024 when I was receiving chapters in blocks of ten. I loved it so much and I was excited to head back to Southwell Woods and experience the newest edited, published version. It has changed a lot but it is just as incredible - Jessica has absolutely smashed this book out the park.
Jess's writing is beautiful and magical, drawing you into the woods and wishing you could meet a fae of your own. This is a brilliant cost fantasy filled with loveable characters, enough action to keep the pages turning and a few twists that hit the spot.
"We make quite the pair, don't we? You're lost, and I'm hiding."
With the loss of her beloved grandmother, Fern feels empty. Stuck in a job she doesn't care for, a poor relationship with her mother, she longs to be near the woods in her grandmother's home. Adeline always spoke so passionately and mysteriously about the woods and the one who never returned and Fern is sure there is more to the story. As Fern delves deeper into the woods, she discovers more than just the beauty and wonder of the nature surrounding her grandmother's home... maybe there is magic in the woods.
Firstly, I cannot believe this is a debut. From the first chapter I was highlighting beautiful, lyrical writing that captured so well the cosy and magical nature of the Finding Fern. I could so clearly visualise the forest, the violet oasis and the rather nice fae men that Fern comes into contact with.
A rather grumpy, tall, muscular, growly fae named Oak? Sold I cannot wait to hear more about Puck in future books, he has a lot to tell us I'm sure.
A slow burn romance found amongst the cosiest fantastical setting was fun to read about but equally I loved the found friendships and the way Fern adored her grandmother.
A cleverly crafted book with twists/cliffhangers that I did not see coming at all and a couple of spicy scenes that had me blushing but also begging Jess to write more of them - bravo.
Oh what a joy to read Finding Fern, I’m so grateful to have been part of Jess’s ARC team to read and review prior to publication.
Some people might know or remember Jess as brizzbrownandbooks. I’ve followed Jess for a long time on Instagram and I watched her stories of the writing journey, checking off the word count, the editing and seeing the dedication, I have to say it’s an absolutely incredible debut.
Finding Fern is truly wonderful and I’d love to just pack up my books and the cats and move to Southwell Woods. I think it’s probably one of the most descriptive books I’ve read, I feel like I could picture the beautiful image of the woods and all the characters within.
It’s the perfect cosy fantasy, it’s magical, I love the found family, absolutely adored the slow burn romance between Fern and Oak 🥹 there are secrets which I weren’t expecting and I honestly just loved everything about it! I can’t wait for the next book.
Finding Fern is available for pre order and is out 1st July and I 100% recommend!
I have been lucky to receive an advance reader copied this and it has been just a delight to read. I’ve been really enjoying lower stakes, cosy fantasy books and this just hits that spot. There is still tension there with Silas the leader of the Southwell Fae fearing their community may be in trouble, but it was just the right amount of tension. At first, Fern the MFC seemed a bit too sweet but I loved her growth and how she began to stand up for both herself and her friends. Willow was another favourite, what a gorgeous character who created the found family feeling I love. Forrest’s devotion to Southwell was perfect but at times I wanted to shake him (no spoilers - you will know when you get to that point)! Whose story is next??
For a debut this is just fantastic! Cosy, cottagecore fae vibes. Love, loss and found family - brilliant stuff. A wee warm hug of a book, highly recommend 🩷
I'll always be in awe of writers and how they pull stories with twists and turns together. Jess has woven such a beautiful world out in the woods together. Her characters are interesting and have the perfect found family vibes I love. The pace is a mixture of slow and cosy and fast tension building scenes.
we follow Fern through finding herself in the woods, understanding the Fae community and how they train and ultimately her search for answers.
I'm glad my theories were right and I had to tell my husband to be quiet during that fight scene as my heart was in my mouth! While there was depth to the characters and the twists were done well, I wanted a little more from the character growth - but maybe I'll get that with Puck and you know who's story next, right Jess?!
I was lucky enough to read this originally in its early stages and loved it so much. Now it’s here in its final form I was SO excited to how Jess had developed it and omg it’s some how even better!!
Finding Fern is a heartwarming story of finding yourself again, learning to live after loss and discovering love in the most unexpected places. A love of a new family A love you were destined to meet And the love of yourself that you deserve
This story is full of magic and set in the most beautiful place ever. This is perfect for readers who love a cosy fantasy, who love to escape reality and who love amazing characters.
Also - Oak is all your blonde fae MMC dreams come true okay?
I cannot WAIT for book 2 - give me more puck pls and thanks
Jess really had written such an amazing book and I hope it gets the love it deserves.
I really enjoyed this woodland fantasy. Highly recommend for an easy read that will sweep you away to a cosy magical world from the very first pages.
Fern is devastated after the loss of her beloved grandma. But it’s not long until she stumbles into a world that becomes a great comfort and distraction. The biggest distraction being a tall blonde male fae called Oak.
With themes of found family and slow burn romance, Finding Fern is destined to be a crowd-pleaser. I’m so impressed at this being a debut book. I’d be delighted if I’d have written something this great!
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Finding Fern and Jessica has created the ultimate cosy romantasy with this book. Think secrets, mystery, hot fae, a loveable fmc, and twists and turns I certainly didn’t see coming!
The writing was incredible, painting the most amazing image of Southwell Woods and the characters living within. I was completely captivated from start to finish, desperate to be transported to that world and spend time with Fern and co. This book is a dream for those who crave a fantasy setting, without having to slog through 100+ pages of world building!
In terms of the romance between Oak and Fern, I’m a big fan of a slow burn, and this book delivered in that department. The perfect amount of build up before getting to the good stuff, torturing me in the most delicious way.
Three words: The Violet Oasis!
Overall Finding Fern was the most dreamy read, and I’m so excited for others to pick it up! And I’m already praying for book 2…!! Please!
I can’t believe this is a debut! Well done Jess! Review to follow 😊
~ Review ~
Finding Fern is a debut novel by Jessica Ann. Releasing on the 1st July, this is one that I can guarantee you will want to put on your summer tbr! If you’re a lover of cosy fantasy and the found family trope then this is one for you. I was kindly sent a copy of Finding Fern ahead of release and I am so glad that the opportunity to read this in the build up to it!
Fern is a young woman already mourning the loss of her grandmother before she is truly gone. Her quest to discover her grandmothers past leads her to a whimsical woodland, magical fae, a family she could only have ever hoped for and a certain blonde fire wielding fae called Oak, who perhaps, becomes the most unexpected surprise of all.
I really enjoyed the cosy vibes and the characters who were part of the found family theme. It was whimsical, creative and easy to follow. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Fern in Southwell Woods and I look forward to visiting again.
My favourite character had to be Puck without a doubt, I loved his banter and tone, it’s quite clear he would do whatever it takes for those he cares for and I’m looking forward to see how his character is developed. I echo all the advanced reader girlies when I say I can’t wait for book 2!
Absolutely loved this book! From the very beginning of reading the prologue I was entranced and totally hooked, the pages flew by and it felt effortless to read. The descriptions and world building of Southwell Woods was beautifully done, and I could picture these gorgeous woods so easily. I loved the mystery behind the woods and the unveiling of its secrets was just perfect, it really was such a magical read, and also such a joy to read.
This debut is amazing! It’s everything you want in a cosy fantasy, quiet village life, mysterious woods, fae magic, and a love story that unfolds so naturally.
It’s hard to believe this is Jessica Ann’s first book. The characters, the atmosphere, the slow build of everything… it just worked so well. I’m already counting down the days for the next one. I need more of this world and Puck.
Highly recommend if you love cottagecore vibes, slow burn romance, and stories that feel like stepping into a quiet fairytale. 🌿✨
cosy fantasy is really hard to write because characters are just doing a whole lot of nothing, except so much is happening! The best cosy fantasies are when you want to step in the book and chill with everyone. For me, this book hit every single mark.
Its slower paced than I usually like but I was here for the vibes and the magic. The found family was lovely but I especially loved the tight knit group of girls! its not often you see that in fantasy these days.
I loved Oak and Fern, who found their way to each other in such a wholesome way AAAHH SO CUTE but I need to know more about Summer and about Puck!!
A fabulous debut, the most beautiful descriptions and the perfect all season read!
I read Finding Fern OG as a beta read and wow the magic that Jessica wrote was insane.
I fell in love with Southwell Woods, with Fern and Oak and all the characters of the woods. She wrote a world that I can see when I walk through the woods, people I can see when I close my eyes. I still think about it months after reading because it was all so beautiful.
The dual perspective was written beautifully, introducing us to the woods whilst Fern was still in real life. The end built up so rapidly that I stayed up into the early hours to finish and find out what happened
The main thing I loved about this book and will forever stay with me is how she wrote about loss. It was written so beautifully that I highlighted so much so remember.
I can’t wait to reread when it’s released in July, I’ve already preordered and can’t wait to see the changes she made.
I could not more highly recommend this magical, magical read!
An easy 5 stars for this debut indie author on her very first novel, seeing your journey writing this book, to actually reading it myself, is amazing. I'm in love with what you've created here.
For a cosy fantasy, I didn't expect to be crying from the first chapter, and more, but the story just moved me. It made me feel seen. The connection I had with Fern and her journey through grief and ultimately finding herself is one I'm very much aware of. So many moments in this book resonated with me.
Southwell Woods is a place I want to get lost in. I've always found forests and being among trees to be magical, and Jess has just proved me exactly right. The descriptions of the woods was so vivid my imagination was going wild as I read the words on pages - this is one of those books where you forget you're reading, and it feels like you're right there inside the book, experiencing everything alongside the characters.
Talking about characters, I loved them all. The found family vibes, the sisterhood and brotherly love was perfect. I want to be a part of their family. It's all held together by Willow, and especially by Oak, who knew I'd be into a blond guy? and not white blond at that! The slow burn romance between Fern and Oak was beautiful to witness, their scenes were magical and flawless, I loved how they formed their relationship over time.
Honestly, such a whimsical and wholesome story that I can see myself reading again and again, alongside book 2 that's gonna be about a very important character, right Jess?!
Finding Fern by Jessica Ann is a beautiful fantasy that feels like stepping into a modern-day fairy tale wrapped in grief, self-discovery, and the pull of destiny.
After the passing of her grandmother Aveline, Fern returns to the village of Southwell and finds herself drawn to the same mysterious woods her grandmother always seemed connected to. What begins as a search for answers about her grandfather, the love of Aveline’s life, quickly transforms into something more profound. Fern discovers not only a hidden realm of woodland fae, but a deeper sense of herself.
What I loved most about this story is how Fern’s journey doesn’t just revolve around uncovering family secrets, it’s about transformation. Through the magic of the woods and the challenges she faces, Fern realizes her own strength, vibrancy, and purpose. She finds beauty in the wild unknown, connection in the unlikeliest places, and love that feels destined.
There is also real tension in the story. A looming threat from a rival fae faction casts a shadow over the serenity Fern finds, adding urgency and action that heightens the stakes. With her new home and her heart on the line, she must choose between safety and standing up for a world, and a love, worth fighting for.
This story is soft, a little wistful, and powerful. It made me slow down and reflect. If you’re drawn to cozy fantasy with gentle romance, enchanting forest realms, and a heroine who grows into her magic and herself, Finding Fern is a story you’ll want to get lost in.
Finding Fern takes you on a whimsical journey into Southwell Woods. After Fern’s grandmother passes away she feels a pull to the woods her grandma was obsessed with, once she enters she learns of magic, fae and love ❤️
I absolutely loved this book, it was just what I needed after reading some heavy books and was a breath of fresh air. The romance is slow burn, the friendships are heartwarming and the magic is super cool. What more could you want?
I also loved how all the names of the characters were linked to nature which just made the story feel warm and cosy ❤️ Oak is EVERYTHING and love him and Fern together so much! When is the next one coming out please? 🙏 😂
🌿✨ 5 stars for Finding Fern Utterly enchanting and comforting — Finding Fern is cozy fantasy, with interesting magic, a lovable cast, and a setting that feels like a dream. I loved following Fern discover this new world and simply cannot wait to see it expand!! Oh and that ending has me hooked and waiting patiently for the next book!!! ✨
This was just what I needed after reading some intense fantasy series. It is a beautiful story, characters are all captivating I was hooked on wanting to find out what happens and read it really quick, love that there will be more to their story, left on a cliff hanger but this book wrapped up beautifully.
I absolutely adored this book! The cosy, woodland vibes were so immersive and I was captivated by the cast of characters; each thoughtfully developed and distinct. I can't wait for the sequel and to find out what happens next for Fern...
First of all, thank you to Jess for giving me the opportunity to read this as an ARC before release.
Now, this is truly the most magical fantasy debut! I absolutely loved it and honestly, I now want to wander into the woods to find my own captain of the fae. From the very first page, you're completely immersed in this enchanting world. The descriptions and world-building are vivid, yet easy to follow, making it effortless to visualize everything.
We follow Fern, our FMC, who finds herself more alone than ever after the passing of her beloved Granny Aveline, who had suffered from dementia for years. Before she passed, Aveline often spoke of the woods. One day, Fern takes a walk there … and so begins her new adventure, full of mystery and long-hidden secrets.
As soon as we were introduced to our MMC, Oak, I knew I was going to love him. This is the most delicious slow burn (did someone say Violet Oasis?), and the tension is palpable from their very first meeting.
The bond between grandparent and grandchild is unbreakable, and even though Fern and Aveline share only a short time on the page together, Jess does a brilliant job capturing the depth of their connection. Having lost my own grandmother within the past year, that part really hit home.
The found family aspect of this book was so well written, and I can’t wait to learn more about the Fae of Southwell Woods in the next book.
Overall, this is the most whimsical fantasy read—I can’t recommend it enough!!
Also.. Jess. We’re going to need book two to be about Puck. Please and thank you xox
✨ I absolutely adored this debut, it completely stole my heart! 🧚♀️ Finding Fern swept me away from the very first page. It’s whimsical, emotional, and filled with that kind of magic you feel deep in your soul. ♥️
Fern is such a relatable main character. As she navigates loss and grief, she’s suddenly pulled into a new, otherworldly realm and in doing so, she begins to find herself (with the help of some very attractive fae, of course).
Jess has done a phenomenal job crafting a world I didn’t want to leave. From the moment the fae realm was revealed, I was hooked, I wanted to live there forever. The found family in this story is one I’ll think about for a long time. I already miss them, and I’d do just about anything to dive back into another one of Jess’s books. (And let’s be honest, we’re all craving more of Puck, the mysterious and mischievous one 😜)
The world Jess has created is rich and magical without ever being overwhelming. I often struggle with fantasy world building, but not here Jess gives you just enough to feel completely immersed, like you’re walking alongside Fern and Oak through every twist and turn.
If you love gentle fantasy with strong characters, subtle romance, and enchanting vibes, this one is a must read. I can’t wait to see what Jess writes next! 🩵
Finding Fern is the perfect cozy, fae romance to read this summer. It's set in the most gorgeously described woodland you could imagine. It follows the story of Fern who finds herself in a woodland fae community, somehow connected to her grandmother, Aveline, who recently passed away. Our MMC, Oak, takes her under his wing, and despite a few hiccups along the way, they soon can't be parted. Can Oak help Fern to uncover old secrets and find a new beginning?
As well as the setting, I loved the side characters here. Puck was wonderful lighthearted release, Aveline has a presence through the whole book that lights up the page, and I am endlessly intrigued by Wolfe...
If you like the following, I'd highly recommend you pick up Finding Fern this summer:
✨️ Fated mates ✨️ Found Family ✨️ Cottage core vibes ✨️ Dual perspective ✨️ Slow burn ✨️ Light spice
