Anne Digby, the author of the Trebizon series of British girls' school stories (The Hockey Term at Trebizon, Secret Letters at Trebizon), themselves somewhat imitative of Enid Blyton's considerably more popular Malory Towers series, has undertaken to continue Blyton's Naughtiest Girl series, about Elizabeth, who deliberately sets out to be so outrageously naughty that she would need to be sent home, only to find out she actually is fond of Whyteleafe, her new school. Elizabeth is so impressed by the fairness of the staff and the head boy and girl that she reforms--she is really only naughty in the first book--only to fall into one mishap after another which cause her to find her reputation as a troublemaker difficult to overcome. Anyway, in this book Elizabeth promises her friend John not to tell anyone he is entering a gardening competition. This rather thin premise (Why would anyone care that he has entered? Everyone knows he is the best gardener in the school!) gives rise to difficulties when Elizabeth is believed to be a troublemaker again, but cannot clear herself without betraying John's secret. She ends up feeling triumphant that she survives the crisis without telling anyone, but in the meantime she has hurt the feelings of another friend.
The Naughtiest Girl series has always been my favorite of Blyton's school stories: the school is more progressive than most fictional British schools and espouses some interesting pedagogical principles, and there are fewer slapsticky episodes with third formers playing tricks on hapless schoolmistresses. (Maybe because the students play a larger role in governing themselves?) So I am glad to see it continue, but I wish it were in the hands of a stronger and more original writer than Digby.

This is the book were Anne Digby carries on the Naughtiest Girl series. So everything is the same and we still follow Elizabeth and her friends at Whyteleafe School. This time she is again trying to be good while keeping a secret that keeps getting her into trouble. I'm a little bored now but I still want to finish the whole series so I'm aiming to read one a month so I'll see how that goes.

Beres. Ide yang simple tapi brilliant!

While not as good as the original titles, there is something endearing about Digby's writing that makes me sure younger readers wouldn't even notice the continuity of these books. The great shame with Enid's work is despite her writing hundreds of stories, for me there was never enough in my favorite boarding school stories and this was no exception. Elizabeth still has many years left at Whyteleafe when we leave the original books, and as a child I often wondered what happened next. Whether this is what Enid imagined is moot; it is still the fun series it was. Four stars.

I could connect with the mischief and fun through and through. A must read for every school-girl. After all, only work and no play would make us such prudes!

Add to that a little flirtation and friendship, and something mesmerizing blossoms, yet retaining its innocence.

A story that would resonate with every school girl across ages and generations.

Nothing beats reading from a physical book. The joy you get is way better from an e-book.

Since I’m staying almost half of the day at work and we have our own library there I decided to make use of my time by finishing my goal for this year of the reading challenge.

Thought I’ll start with something simple since it’s been a while and I picked this. It started slow and ordinary at first, but when I reached the 4th chapter, all the excitement begun. Truly you can make a lot when you use all the free time you have. When you add them up, you realize you actually accomplished something. Every free minute I got, I used to open up the book to read. Before the kids’ arrival in the morning, in the afternoon when waiting for the ride to take us back home, few minutes after recess. I was running with the pages while reading a physical book not to mention how exciting the whole story was.

Loved the events, but the ending!? Elizabeth’s was okay, Roger!? No problem. Patrick?! Why did he go back to the team. Shouldn’t he be punished for what he did to Elizabeth!? And how come Arabella didn’t get any since she was the cause for the mess Elizabeth got into. The ending could’ve been a bit more satisfying but overall it was a fun reading and I’m looking forward to the next one. 3,5 stars

Elizabeth Allen is having a difficult time of it. Her new friend Patrick thinks she’s trying to keep him out of the tennis team. She isn’t a monitor any more. And on top of everything, keen gardener John Terry has asked her to keep his secret about entering a gardening competition. Will Elizabeth manage to keep John’s secret in spite of her own problems?

Anne Digby exactly captures Blyton’s tone here, and builds on themes and characters from previous books to create a believable sequel. I’m not so enthralled by the morality of Elizabeth keeping John’s secret without anyone ever pointing out that this was a case where she should have explained herself to someone. But the other plot lines have the element I like about the NG books, that Elizabeth’s heart is in the right place but that she and others have to learn to control their tempers and find the good in other people.

#2019 #YearInBooks Book 29

Bangalore power outages help bookworms like me in a way. There's nothing left to do but read. It's too hot to go out in the afternoon 😜

First time I'm reading Anne Digby's take on the Naughtiest Girl series, and it wasn't bad. It didn't feel very different from Enid Blyton written books, but perhaps the narrative wasn't as crisp.

Elizabeth Allen helps John in the garden and keeps his secret. This gets her in trouble but she doesn't blab. Some old rivalries are renewed, with little help from Arabella of course. I liked the ending, and that it turned out alright because of Julian and Elizabeth.

I am loving the series. It's bringing happiness, and I think reading should do just that.

The first Naughtiest Girl continuation novel by Anne Digby. I thought she did a fine job in keeping to the style of the series. As the original books by Enid Blyton, the are focused on Elizabeth's problems with other children, due to misunderstandings and a someone else's secret that Elizabeth has to keep even though it means being unfairly suspected of mischief. In the end, of course, the innocent will be rewarded, and even the guilty will be shown empathy and understanding.

The situations are a bit contrived, but this is in keeping with the style of the originals, which are targeted to slightly younger children than the Malory Towers and St. Clare's series.

This is an extension of the series written by Anne Digby. The writing style is very close to the original books and it is hard when reading them to tell the difference between the two authors. Elizabeth is still developing as a character and still getting into trouble without meaning to. A nice, quick and enjoyable read.

My daughter didn't seem to notice the drop off in quality from the Enid Blyton novels, but I sure did. It's clear these stories won't evolve as much from book to book as Digby is determined to recycle existing characters, besides the rather wishy washy Patrick. Still, it served its purpose for bedtime stories for a few weeks.

This one really made me cry for a couple times. It was terrible what Elizabeth had felt. Thankfully it all came clear in the end

A very elaborate story about how Elizabeth deals with stepping down as a monitor, helps John mentally to win a gardening competition & catches a trouble-maker who was least suspected.

Loved it! Reminded me of when I first read one of the books in the series when I was really small.
