Mark Antony #4
Caesar's Nemesis
A hero will fall. An emperor will rise.
Mark Antony is Caesar’s successor, victor over Caesar’s murderers Brutus and Cassius, and the most powerful man in the world.
Yet he cannot be complacent. Octavian, Caesar’s heir, is ambitious, intelligent and ruthless. Antony must prove himself with a great military victory to hold onto his position, and marches against Rome’s old foe: the Parthian empire. But this is a formidable opponent; the bones of many legions lie on the battlefields of the East. And with the beguiling Cleopatra distracting him, can Antony come out on top?
Antony’s final years are a whirlwind of shifting alliances, betrayals and war. In the end, the Battle of Actium will decide the fate of the empire, and set the course of history for the next two thousand years.
From Alexandria to Actium, this clash established a dynasty and struck down one of Rome’s greatest heroes.

Great conclusion to a riveting series. Can't wait to read about whichever historical figure Alex decides to explore next.

4.5 What an amazing series, and saved the best for last.
I remember seeing these books on the broken binding store, and thinking that all the autobiographies, fantasy and sci-fi books wouldn't it make a nicee chance to read a historical epic, and im glad I did.
Joining Mark Antony for the journey or his life, learning about ancient Rome and the world, battles, betrayals, love, loss, regrets, family and friends, its all here and written so masterfully that it always progresses even when the moment is thought provoking.
Ill be keeping an eye out for this author's next book thats for sure.

a sad and triumphant end
I read each page with a bitter sweetness, knowing Antony was headed to his doom. Antony is presented as a ‘lovable rogue’ which is fabulous. You can’t help feel disappointed for him as he makes poor choices, brave choices, and romantic choices.
In this novel Cleopatra comes off poorly: a little sappy and manipulative. I like to think of her as more brilliant and sophisticated rather than unwitting architect of Antony’s downfall.
But with such titans of history and historical imagination, there are infinite versions of Antony and his fascinating consort.
The novels are meticulous in their research and compelling in their vivid recounting, of battles in particular.
Bravo Alex Gough! I have adored each book and the entire series as a feast worthy of Antony himself.

Anthony and others
The life of the person second only to Julius Caesar is both intriguing and surprising as portrayed in this very good biography. Many of the persons that you meet have stories of their own such as Cleopatra and Octavian.
