I will admit that learning about an author and their creations fascinates me but at the same highlights how little I really know about them and their work.
This is a prefect example - I will however start with an caveat - this is a book which is designed to deliver its message in short easy to follow snippets, meaning that complex or details discussions limited or condensed to meet the "3-minute" focused. Reading some of the other reviews on this book it would seem some liberties were taken - I am in NO position to comment on this not knowing enough to say one way or the other but I guess trying to condense a persons like and works in to a book less than 200 pages long (less in fact as each opposing page is little more than an image) there would be some compromises.
That said I found the book fascinating and great read and really helped to ground both the books and the man who wrote them.

Nadie duda hoy día de que J. R. R. Tolkien es el padre de la fantasía épica moderna. Su obra es la tercera más vendida en toda la historia, tras la Biblia y el Libro Rojo. Aquí conoceremos su interesante vida, sus obras y sus grandes influencias.
El libro está dividido en tres partes. La primera analiza la vida de Tolkien desde su nacimiento hasta su muerte. Tolkien siempre destacó en sus estudios, especialmente en los idiomas (y ya hablaba varios). Esto hizo que estudiara filología clásica para, posteriormente, centrarse en las literatura inglesa, analizando las sagas inglesa y nórdicas. Conoceremos también su actuación en la Primera Guerra Mundial, que le influyó muchísimo, y los continuos grupos literarios a los que ya desde chico estuvo inmerso. Además, su amistad con otros personajes de la época, como C. S. Lewis, el nacimiento de los hobbits o las influencias que tuvo.
La segunda parte se centra en sus obras, comenzando con El hobbit (primera en publicarse). Tendremos un resumen pormenorizado de todas las obras que publicó en vida y se irán analizando sus personajes, sus construcciones y todo el mundo creado de la Tierra Media, un mundo muy complejo y rico en detalles con paralelismos en la mitología inglesa. La tercera se centra en la influencia. No solo en la influencia que tuvo Tolkien de otros autores y historias, sino en la que él ejerció posteriormente. Se hablarán de sus películas, de los libros que luego tuvieron influencias de la Tierra Media, del arte, los fans, los juegos de rol y todo su legado.
A lo largo del libro tendremos, además de numerosas imágenes y dibujos, fragmentos de las obras de Tolkien y de las numerosas cartas que fue escribiendo en vida. El libro está pensaba para que dediquemos tres minutos a cada página, por lo que el libro podrá ser leído en tres horas. Además garantiza tener unos conocimientos bastante completos y exhaustos de la vida, influencias y obras de Tolkien. Aunque, claro está, se recomienda primero haber leído las novelas (al menos las principales), pero tampoco es un impedimento si no se ha hecho. Una edición espléndida, con bastante información dosificada, con un lenguaje sencillo y agradable. Una obra esencial para todo amante de la literatura fantástica.

It's an easy and quick read which gives information on Tolkien. However, there were several errors in it that shouldn't be in it. For example, Beorn is called a werewolf which he isn't. He doesn't even turn into a wolf. One of the biggest mistakes is that Aragorn is named as the son of the steward of Minas Tirith while Boromir is "a man of Gondor". The last part, on Tolkiens influence, seems a bit far-fetched at several times especially as the claims aren't really backed up. It's a fun read, but because of its mistakes and sometimes far-fetched claims not nearly as conclusive as the author wants you to believe.

Zeer matig. Tolkien, duidelijk een interessante en heel invloedrijke schrijver, met een bewogen leven, en toch is dit super korte boek... saai? Voornamelijk de verheerlijking en claims dat zonder Tolkien vrijwel al het hedendaags entertainment (nee, niet alleen fantasy o.i.d., maar zelfs de claim dat de originele Star Wars nooit had kunnen bestaan zonder hem?) zijn invloed heeft gehad... Ook welgeteld 3 zinnen over zijn tijd in WW1 aan diepgang, en vervolgens steeds terugverwijzen alsof het zo uitgebreid toegelicht is... jammer. Paar leuke feitjes, en super kort boek, dus niet echt tijd verspilling, maar juttig besteedde tijd was het ook niet...

I wasn’t sure if I was going to review this book, but I decided to do it anyway, because I enjoyed it.
This book tells you about J.R.R. Tolkien, the writer who gave us the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings, the Silmarillion, and a lot of other great works. 3-Minute J.R.R. Tolkien tells you about his past, about how he wrote the famous books and about his influences to the fantasy books we read now. It also tells you a bit about the fans of the world of Middle Earth, about the movies made by Peter Jackson (and the cartoons made in the 70s).
Like I said, I enjoyed reading it; the pieces of text were short (so short you could have a page finished within three minutes, hence the title). But I did notice some tiny mistakes. I am not sure if these were translation mistakes (I read it in Dutch) or just mistakes in the original book, but in one part, Beorn (who we meet in the Hobbit) is called a werewolf, and later on he’s a shapeshifter (though the correct term is skin changer). And later on in the book, Éowyn, who is the badass lady who kills the Witch-king of Angmar during the battle for Minas Tirith (Return of the King), is called Théoden’s daughter, though she is his niece (Éowyn and her brother Éomer were brought up by Théoden ‘as if they were his own children’ (so I kinda get the confusion there but still), but the latter had only one son, Théodred, who died in Two Towers).
Of course, I am not really bothered by these tiny mistakes, but still they are a bit dumb in my opinion, I mean if you want to write a biography about someone, you’d really make sure to get all the facts right, and get it checked (and perhaps double checked), or is that just me?
Beside that, the book tells you a lot about J.R.R. Tolkien’s life, about his wife, his three sons and daughter; his friends, his life as a teacher; it tells you so much in those small pieces of text. If you want to know more about the writer of the Lord of the Rings, I suggest you pick up this book, because it’s also accompanied by some amazing pictures!

¡Me ha parecido una maravilla! He descubierto cosas sobre la vida de Tolkien que no conocía y sobre cómo escribió sus obras. Me ha encantado el formato del libro, con apartados cortos, relevantes e interesantes. Además, intercala una página de texto con una de fotografías a todo color que tienen relación y me han parecido muy acertadas. Mención especial también a que incluye muchas citas de Tolkien maravillosas, sacadas de su biografía más famosa y del libro que contiene una selección de cartas que escribió.
En resumen, es un libro que todo amante de Tolkien tiene que tener en su biblioteca para ser consultado. ¡Además está a un precio que da risa!

Aunque es una biografía breve, trasmite de manera única lo necesario para conocer la vida de Tolkien y detalle de manera muy exacta como la obras de Tolkien han influenciado los campos de literatura, musica, cine y vídeo juegos. Un libro que todo fan de estas tener.

Es una biografía breve de Tolkien. Se divide en tres capítulos. El primero sobre aspectos generales sobre su vida a nivel personal, profesional, etc. El segundo capítulo centrado en sus obras principalmente el Hobbit y el Señor de los anillos (si no se han leído hay spoilers) y el tercero acerca de la influencia e inspiración de Tolkien y su obra en otros campos como el cine, la música y los juegos.
La edición es muy bonita, trae bastantes fotografías e ilustraciones relacionadas con lo que se expone. El esquema general de cada capítulo es el mismo, trae apartados compuestos por tres párrafos. Se lee muy rápido y me parece que permite conocer bastante sobre este autor (aunque al ser una biografía breve podría ser que aquellos fanáticos de Tolkien y su obra sepan la mayor parte de lo que aquí se presenta).

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was a favorite author of mine growing up. I read The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King before I turned 16. I saw Peter Jackson's movies in the theater. I didn't see The Hobbit movies, though. I thought it was a cash grab that didn't need three films to tell the story.
Gary Raymond wrote an unusual introduction to Tolkien's life and works. I read the books when I was a teenager, so I remember them quite vividly. I don't need a recap on the events of The Hobbit. Tolkien's life occupies the first part of 3-Minute J.R.R. Tolkien. The first section and the third section are the two parts that I focused on the most.

I love Tolkien's work, and this book summarizes his life, work and influence very well. Particularly found it interesting how much his invention of modern fantasy influenced other great authors and beloved stories - such as Harry Potter and Star Wars. Tolkien has been, is, and always will be a literary giant.

Excelente libro.
Liviano pero profundo. Concebido para ser leído en muchos minicapitulos muy rápidos pero que al fin cubren ampliamente la vida e influencia de Tolkien. Mucha imagen, datos, etc, un gusto haberlo leído, excelente para regalar.

A decent introductory book for anyone wondering what 'that Hobbit fuss' is all about and is interested enough to read a basic outline about Tolkien so they don't look like perfect fools when discussion about The Hobbit films comes up. Also for folks who have time constraints on their reading, or like to time their reading, or are anal about reading something under a certain amount of time, or have a short attention span, or....
Or so I assume, since the author has taken the trouble to divide the chapters into twenty 3-minute features and assures you that 'a single paragraph will take you about one minute to digest, meaning that each feature can be understood in about three minutes.' He goes further to say that each of the three chapters will take about an hour to digest and promises a solid understanding of the life history, literary highlights, and importance of J.R.R. Tolkien in about three hours. Quite a promise. There are also '3-Second Quest' summaries in the side-bar of each page for those who can't handle reading for 3 minutes. Think illustrated Cliff Notes. I couldn't help musing about these '3-minute' readers actually tackling The Lord of the Rings or the Silmarillion.
A couple quibbles: For some reason unclear to me, the author chose to bold certain phrases and words. Bolding names or important points to grab your attention I can understand, but then we have quite a few sentences like these: "Ronald and Edith conducted a romance that constituted long walks, conversations that went deep into the night, and memories of watching the sun come up over the rooftops..." And, "Tolkien's love of words was put to good use, and the dictionary entries that he worked on included the words "waistcoat," "walnut," "walrus," and "wampum." Why 'walrus', I wondered? Well, there was an illustration of a walrus on the facing page but I was no wiser as to the reason for bolding it. Personally, I would have chosen waistcoat.
One more thing: each subject page includes a quote in the sidebar, which is nice, but Gandalf's "not all tears are an evil" quote from RotK is attributed to Frodo. How did that get by the proof-reader? I didn't go over the book with a fine-tooth comb, but this error left me wondering what other mistakes might be in here.
I did like many of the photos - some which I don't think I've seen before - and some of the Russian illustrations of Tolkien's works that were included were a nice addition. The time-lines are useful. Other than that, it's another quirkily amusing, quasi-useful book for my Tolkien shelf.

3 Minute Tolkien is a captivating biography about the founder of high fantasy, Tolkien. We journey with him through out his life, from his birth in South Africa to the many awestruck writers that he left behind (who would later become the authors of our generation). As my favorite author, as well as someone I highly admire and venerate as a person, I recommend this book to Tolkien fans like myself, who want to know about the origins of of his works (which do not just include The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, an The Silmarillion!).
J.R.R. Tolkien grew up in South Africa and then moved to England. Both his father and mother died before the age of 21, and he was raised by the church. While there, he fell madly in love with a woman named Edith, who returned his love willingly. However, the church forbid him from seeing Edith till 21, worried that his studies would suffer because of her. Later however, they get married, and have many children.
J.R.R. Tolkien was an avid student, and was very smart. His prime interests lay in linguistics as well as mythology, hence the complicated names of his characters.
He created the Lord of the Rings so that England, too, could have its own mythology.
I recommend this book highly!!!

My challenge read 10 books in the year 2015 as book number 7 "J.R.R. Tolkien in 3 minutes" on my list.
An unauthorized biography of the world's most famous fantasy writer.
My girlfriend came home with this book for me, I will really appreciate as a Tolkien fan, she should have thought and gave me this book as a gift.
The book divides the life, work and the influence of J.R.R. Tolkien in parts of 1 hour and episodes of 3 minutes.
Direct insight into a particular life and the links between Tolkien's real and fantasy world.
The fastest way to learn more about the origin of a fantasy work and its impact on writers, artists, filmmakers and we as fans and inspires.
A flaw as a side line I have experienced while reading this book is that not everything is true what is written and in my vision better should select. An example of this is that the character Beorn from the book the Hobbit was a werewolf, and Aragorn, son of Arathorn, the city keeper.
While in the work of JRR Tolkien Beorn could turn into a bear, and Aragorn, son of Arathorn, from the dunedain weds originates.
Outside this few little lies, I recommend anyone who wants to know more about JRR Tolkien, this book and his other stories, poems and smaller stories to read.

A book thorough in its breadth if not its depth. A reader will have a good idea about the most important points of Tolkien's life, works, and influence, and will have a good starting point to explore both Tolkien's work and the work of others. The title and structure is somewhat condescending (I'm not expected to have more than three minutes at a time to devote to reading about Tolkien?), but as a brief examination of Tolkien it does its job well. A dyed-in-the-wool fan like me had moments of irritation where the cursory approach this book takes was concerned (attributing movie quotes to the books themselves was one such example), but its appeal lies in reflection of all things Tolkien as well as its being a book on Tolkien I had not yet read.

Si eres fan de Tolkien o simplemente sabes lo básico sobre él no te leas esto, porque eso es basicamente lo que es. Hay datos biograficos y sobre aspectos de su obra que pueden ser interesantes, pero creo que con el capítulo 3 alargan mucho el chicle y vale que no dicen ninguna mentira pero tío qué me estás contando del Assassins Creed ahora. Bueno pues eso, si no sabes nada de Tolkien y tienes curiosidad sobre él y todo lo que rodea a su obra go for it. Si no pues no perdais el tiempo y coged una biografia como Dios manda.

Reconozco que minusvaloré esta obra cuando cayó en mis manos. Sin embargo, tras leer otra biografía más profunda, creo que es una síntesis perfecta de la vida de Tolkien, su obra y lo que ésta ha supuesto a nivel mundial.
Cada capítulo consta de tres apartados de no más de un párrafo, que tratan tres aspectos esenciales de ese capítulo.
Además, las ilustraciones y las fotos son exquisitas.
Se trata de un viaje a través del mundo y la vida de Tolkien, que se puede hacer en muy poco tiempo y disfrutar visualmente.
Cada capítulo consta de tres apartados de no más de un párrafo, que tratan tres aspectos esenciales de ese capítulo.
Además, las ilustraciones y las fotos son exquisitas.
Se trata de un viaje a través del mundo y la vida de Tolkien, que se puede hacer en muy poco tiempo y disfrutar visualmente.

Très bien fait. Un tour complet de l'oeuvre et de l'auteur, tant sous forme de biographie que de bibliographie. On y résume l'essentiel de brillante façon. Personnellement, j'ai peu appris puisque je connaissais déjà très bien Tolkien, mais pour ceux qui voudrais le découvrir, ou qui le connaissent peu et auraient un désir d'approfondir, ce livre est une très belle référence!

Es interesante la forma en que resume toda la historia de Tolkien: vida, obra e influencia. Cumple su promesa, el libro se puede leer en 3 horas y cada apartado en menos de 3 minutos.
Sin embargo, para un fanático ferviente de Tolkien puede quedarse corto -fue lo que pasó en mi caso.

This was a very fun and handy reference to Tolkien's life, works, and influence. I'm very glad to have run across this! Definitely worth buying in hardcover, though I will point out one slight error from the Works section: Eowyn is Theoden's niece, not his daughter!

Short, informative and fun book for every Tolkien fan.

More of an introduction of the author Tolkien, along with influences on his writings, and his writings influence of others. Not necessary to read to enjoy his works, but if one wants to delve a bit more into his life and works, it is a good start. Nice layout for a book, 60 episodes divided into three sections, with 20 three minute pages per section. Lots of overview in a short time.
