Hal Jordan has been overcome by his curse and has turned his sights on Jo!Can the new Lantern figure out how to hold her ground, or will her light be extinguished for good?
Just finished Absolute Green Lantern #3 — the horror and mystery are building, and it’s getting under my skin in the best way. Dense at times, but the world-building and visuals are next-level. This run is quietly creeping toward greatness.
Absolute Green Lantern almost feels like a slow burn in this issue, but in the best possible way. Their struggle to figure out how to escape, Jon's moment, and the fight between Jo and Hal are all excellent. The Absolute line is killing it right now!
Ewing draws out the underlying weirdness of the Lantern, tying it into deeper myths like the Philosopher’s Stone - an item capable of radical transformation. What does it mean to control something like that??
The dichotomy between all the Green Lanterns before they get powers at all is extremely fascinating to me. I am loving this characterization of John Stewart and all of the potential in Jo as a brand new GL protagonist.
Absolutely loved this issue, we continue to learn so much while staying in complete fear, it’s so good! This issue also introduced a few interesting cameos to continue building the absolute universe, namely staring with the owner of Alan Scott’s cafe and diner…Todd Rice!! WOOOO, obsidan exists!! Do you have a sister?! But more importantly this issue highlights John, and the discovery he made over everyone else. Remember when that biker smashed into the green barrier surrounding their town. Well he doesn’t just serve as a warning to drive cars away, (more than likely there is an effect on people’s minds anyway), but he also gave them an invaluable clue…as the only thing that did survive and make it through the barrier was his gold plated earring. It doesn’t make any sense, it’s not real gold, but when John throws it back through the portal…it makes it to the other side without any issue.
In the present things are starting to heat up between black hand Hal and Green Lantern Jo. Hal isn’t in control and the black hand wants to consume the green light, so he can’t hold it back at all when he lifts his hand up and shoots Jo with a stream of black energy. Luckily Jo is awesome and is able to get a quick manner of control over the green light, forming a force field around herself…and eventually forming a fist to punch Hal back! Once Hal got thoroughly knocked out of the diner, Jo showed up on him like an anime character in full green light. She has a level of control he is begging for right now, it’s so cool.
In the past John got together Jo and Hal to showcase what he discovered. To do this he ended up using one of Hal’s toys…a gold plated “funzo” of blue devil!! Hell yeah! Blue devil in the absolute universe! Absolute blue devil confirmed! Come on, don’t let me down! But here’s what matters, even when it’s gold plated and just a forgettable piece of plastic…it can make it through the portal. John surmounts it back to the philosophers stone and its ability to turn anything into gold, along with a handful of other abilities. But all in all it’s a symbol that stands for enlightenment, as anything can become gold through knowledge. But what about actual gold? John puts this to the test by using his grandmother’s ring, which ends up forming quite a large hole for a few seconds. They should be able to get everyone together in town to get someone out, but John isn’t so sure that is what they should be doing. They are being tested…but right as John was talking Abin Sur showed up to judge john. And john ended up evaporated the same way Guy was. Todd Rice runs out with a shotgun in anger, but Abin brushed the bullets off and tells Todd to be without fear as judgement is in progress. Seeing all of this go down Hal has been left without any form of hope, there is no knowledge or enlightenment to get them out of this. He only sees them as prisoners being tortured by some alien god. And as the issue comes to an end and Hal begins painting bullets gold…it seems he wants to do something about it.

Friggin loved this issue Every next chapter has me digging this series more and more because you are right there with the characters figuring things out and trying to piece together reason within the mayhem.
Loved John’s role in this issue too and if you’re familiar with Green Lantern lore what they discover here is pretty cool. It had me nerd grinning and saying “Oooh I bet that’s why!” And I don’t even know if my guess is correct yet! This series has me thinking theories and questions which i really enjoy.
There’s a lot of foundational groundwork in this issue. I love manga hair Hal. Definitely nothing like any design we’ve ever seen. It’s a very unique and fresh take on what can be an overstuffed and overcrowded mythos in the mainline universe. This bare bones focus on a few key characters is really interesting. Very focused on a few elements and a very sparse issue but that’s not a bad thing at all. This so far leans into the horror elements of this universe most of all.
I can feel what they’re building toward and it’s too early to really judge but this was a slight let down. The fight between Hal and Jo seemed like it was gonna be really cool but was over in an instant like Hal was bloodthirsty then immediately not. Also John getting judged happened so fast as it was building him toward figuring everything out and freeing him that the impact didn’t hit like it should’ve. I love Green Lantern and still have a lot of hope though.
I enjoyed how this issue went into and started talking about the hypothesis i had about the metaphor for fear and constriction of possibilities. how, they are all waiting for adult so they can stop panicking someone to take the fear away. instead, they will have to be the adult who takes the fear away, or be without the fear is the end goal state but it’s very hard for most people to do that.
I learned a lot of the mythos here in this issue - and for a Lantern noob like me, this definitely picks up my interest and makes me look forward to the next issue.
