Sayyid Abul A’la Maududi [Abū 'l-Aʿlā Mawdūdī) (Urdu: ابو الاعلىٰ مودودی – alternative spellings of last name Maudoodi, Mawdudi, and Modudi) was a journalist, theologian, Muslim revivalist leader and political philosopher, and a controversial 20th century Islamist thinker in British India, and later Pakistan. He was also a political figure in Pakistan and was the first recipient of King Faisal International Award for his services 1979. He was also the founder of Jamaat-e-Islami, the Islamic revivalist party.
One month spent with this book which consist of collection of Khutbah (Friday Congregational Addresses) made me wanna take out my heart and put it under a microscope and see its state. It's mostly about questioning yourself. Not meant to be read hastily. Tried to read it quick but I'd always find in between sub-topic it requires you to pause for in depth self-reflection and introspection.
Do you really understand the Kalimah Syahadah? Do you act upon its meaning? What kind of Muslim are you? Why your solat doesn't 'change' your outward? etc.
For those who are seeking to understand Islam this book fully describes, from a Muslim position, the full wonder of Islam. Whether you are a Muslim or not, it is well worth reading.
I read both the old Lahore edition and this edition. It was a textbook for our YMA study circles for many years. These are sermons delivered during the early 1940's to largely illiterate villagers.
- judgement between Muslims and Kafirs: based on (1) Knowledge (2) Actions in reference to God - Muslims not successful in this world; why? God doesn't love you? Muslims not following Islam properly? something wrong with claim of being a Muslim? - non-Muslims successful in this world; why? - Key: (1) Quran (2) Prophet SAW's teachings • are you doing everything for Allah's pleasure alone? • remembrance of Allah in every single thing • ibadah is what aids you to remember Allah in everything in your life, not the sole definition of being a Muslim. It helps you become a true Muslim. A true Muslim leads a way of life based on Allah's instructions, hence touches every single aspect of your life • if prayers don't bring you closer to Allah, don't make you be better, then you've missed the purpose of prayers. You're supposed to continue with the spirit that you bring to your prayers, continue after you finish praying • fasting is the only private ibadah amongst the pillars of Islam. It is the only one done for Allah (others are done explicitly for the benefit of our own souls) which reward can be as large as Allah decides. • Alms is 2nd most important after prayers. It affects society and is repeated often in the Quran along with performing prayers. Abu Bakar declared war on a tribe of Muslims (Bedouins) who refused to pay zakah after the passing of Rasulullah SAW despite them still performing prayers. • the prophets were all given the message to pray and give alms • almsgiving is as if lending Allah a loan which he shall repay multifold. In order to be close to Allah, one cannot be niggardly • almsgiving is even for those who may have wronged you, for it is a right they have upon Allah's blessings entrusted upon you. It is Allah's and not yours • the magic of Hajj, only witnessed by those who perform it. The tragedy of monetising it when it should be a most impactful journey (like the heart pumping new blood to the body that is the Islamic world) • ultimate objective: jihad • the root cause of evil is corrupt rule. The root cause of corrupt rule is the lordship of man over man • solution: accept the sovereignty of God over man
