A Dead Man’s Hand is part of the Penelope Sinclair Cozy Mystery series by Tessa Aura.
Ever since Penelope opened her shop in the quiet town of Bath, life has been anything but peaceful. Somehow, she always ends up embroiled in a murder mystery—often with her teacup Chihuahua, Teo, by her side.
This time, Penelope isn’t just searching for clues—she’s part of the mystery. When she begins receiving threats warning her to back off, it’s clear someone wants her out of the way. But the killer doesn’t know Penelope very well—she doesn’t scare easily.
Once again, author Tessa Aura delivers a fun, engaging, and twisty plot that keeps readers guessing and thoroughly entertained. I closed the book feeling completely satisfied—and already eager for the next installment!
Penelope Sinclair left Boston to begin her new life in Bath where running her new boutique will be a nice challenge for her… if she can leave Detective Caleb Grant’s murders alone. She is taking Teo, her adorable chihuahu, for his morning walk at 7 a.m. toward the park on this foggy day. They find a man lying flat on his back in the damp grass near the bench where Mrs. Dobbins knits socks for her cats. His eyes are open, one arm outstretched, with a card in his hand? The Jack of Clubs is slightly smudged and the corner is torn. So she called the police. Detective Caleb Grant, tall and brooding, walks toward the crime scene as if he had been expecting her to be there after last month’s crime scene adventure. And as before he told her the police would take care of this and she did not need to get involved. But he stared at her as if he was figuring how long before she started her own investigation anyway… which is exactly what she was planning at the moment, because this one feels “different”.
So unaffected by Detective Caleb's warnings, Penelope and Teo are preparing to track down the killer. Before they even leave the scene, however, Teo sniffs a patch of moss and finds a round, crimson old wax seal with symbols on it. Caleb is talking with the forensic guy, so Penelope puts the seal in her pocket. As she waves goodbye, Caleb again tells her to stay out of this one! This was supposed to be the day of her grand opening, which a town council fire drill ruined the first time she tried. And today, nobody shows up except for two customers, one looking for the seafood festival and the other asking if this was a taxidermy shop. Everyone is distracted by the murder, so no sales at all. Claire who owned the candy shop came in and told her the victim was Jamie Latham, expecting a big reaction but Penelope didn’t know him. He had started a business of delivering baked goods which failed when he promised same-day delivery via bicycle in February and in the state of Maine. Needless to say, it failed.
The next day, the mail carrier gave her an odd black postcard with no return address, no stamp, and only her name on it. Turning it over, it said : “Stay out of this. Some hands shouldn’t be played.” But it seems to be too late for that. Bodies continue to be found with their own playing card. Does this have something to do with members of a failed bakery cooperative? The more she uncovers, the more danger she is in. And now she has a threat card marked specifically for her! Will Caleb be there to protect her? Or will she have to figure this out for herself before the killer silences her?
Dead Man's Hand is the second book in Tessa Aura’s A Penelope Sinclair Cozy Murder Mystery Series. It is one of the most intriguing and entertaining stories I’ve read in a long time, if not ever. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Dead Man's Hand. I love the puns that popped up on almost every page. I was genuinely kept on the edge of my seat, eager for the next pun. The clever wordplay added a delightful layer to the mystery, making it not only engaging but also a joy to read. Tessa Aura has a knack for weaving humor into suspense, and I can't wait to see what Penelope Sinclair gets into next!
The suspense and the murders also kept me hanging on every word as I raced through the story, driven by a desire to uncover what was happening and what everyone was hiding. What occurred all those years ago that someone wants to keep buried in the past? As Penelope delves deeper into the tangled web of secrets, she uncovers clues that suggest the truth is far more sinister than anyone could have imagined. With each revelation, the stakes rise, and she finds herself not only racing against time but also against those who will do anything to protect their dark history.
Penelope finds herself unexpectedly entangled in a murder investigation, as a mysterious killer targets her. Despite Detective Caleb's warnings, Penelope's insatiable curiosity drives her to uncover the truth. Immersed in the thrilling world of Dead Man's Hand, I was captivated by Penelope's determination to solve the case, even as the killer attempts to silence her.
With her trusty Teacup Chihuahua, Teo, by her side, Penelope delves deeper into the mystery, determined to unveil the perpetrator's identity and prevent herself from becoming the next victim. As the suspense builds, I was left eagerly awaiting the next installment in the Penelope Sinclair Cozy Murder Mystery series, eager to discover what new challenges and revelations await.
For all fans of engaging murder mysteries, Dead Man's Hand is a must-read, promising an enthralling journey filled with secrets, twists, and the relentless pursuit of justice.
This book is a very interest play on a poker game. Penelope Sinclair just happens to find a dead body while out walking her dog Teo a Teacup Chihuahua before she goes to her shop on main street in Bath. She calls the police and Detective Caleb arrive and warnings her to not get involved but Penelope just can not seem to not get involved with what is going on. She is trying to figure out what has happen when starts to get cards telling her to stop looking into the murder. But of course she can not stop because it is against everything that she would do. She not sure who she can trust as she is new to town. Her store get broken into but there is no damage just a deck cards moved, who ever is doing this is able to get into her store with a key. Penelope just feels that she must figure out what is going on but as she trys to figure it out there is another body found. Detective Caleb is getting nervous about what is happen around Penelope so he finally a signs a police officer to keep an eye on her. There are lots of things happen and Penelope just can't seem to stay out of it. If you love a challenge about who could be behind what is going on and try to figure out who it is you will enjoy this book as the author has done an execellent job of keeping you wondering who it could be.
I received my copy of this book as an ARC, and this is my voluntary review of it. The protagonist, Penelope, is a gift shop owner in Bath (Maine, not England), who encounters a dead body while taking her teacup chihuahua out for a walk. More bodies show up in the course of the book, and they all have connections to a previous cooperative Bakery business called Baker's Row, which folded under controversial circumstances. Besides connections to Baker's Row, another common thread in the murders seems to be some kind of sick card game (or in one case, chess). The prominent depiction of the chihuahua may be an obvious indication that the book has several of the elements that seem to have become cliches in this type of book: a clue-sniffing pet, an obligatory policeman who tries to keep the protagonist out of the investigation, while at the same time showing some "chemistry" between them, and a threat from the murderer to quit investigating or suffer the consequences. Nonetheless, the plotting is tight and the connections are not giveaways, so you don't feel cheated by a too-obvious solution. All-in-all, a good read.
Penelope Sinclair and her teacup chihuahua, Teo, are enjoying their fresh start in Bath, Maine. Things are going well at her gift boutique, Curious Finds, and her relaunch is happening after the last murder she solved. She's walking in the park with Two when he discovers a dead body clutching a playing card in his hand- the Jack of Clubs. Her curiosity piqued, Penelope ignores warnings from Detective Caleb Grant to stay away from the case. Bodies begin to pile up, each holding a playing, and Penelope and Teo are on the case But, when Penelope herself receives a playing card and threatening notes, things get serious. This is an unputdownable read filled with plot twists and puzzles. And the conclusion is surprising! Everyone needs a canine sidekick like Two and I look forward to seeing what develops between Penelope and Detective Grant. I received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy and I am pleased to leave this voluntary review.
I want to start by saying I received an ARC of this book. This is part of A Penelope Sinclair Cozy Murder Mystery series. While Penelope and her dog Teo are out for a walk they stumble across a body. She starts investigating with the clues she found even though Detective Caleb told her not to. The more she digs the more she is in danger. More bodies start showing up with similarities. Will Penelope and Caleb be able to find who is behind everything? Can they find the killer before Penelope gets killed? I loved Caleb in this book. He is a grumpy detective but he slowly came out of his shell in this book. The side characters were great in this book. This book was one that had me guessing who was behind everything until the end. The ending was great and has me ready for the next book. I do believe we will see a romance between Penelope and Caleb further in the series (hopefully). Overall, this was a great book.
Penelope Sinclair wants to enjoy the peace of Bath, Maine with her teacup chihuahua, Teo. But that’s difficult to do when a dead body shows up behind her boutique. Though Detective Caleb warns her to stay out of it, Penelope dives into the case and uncovers a tangled mystery centered around a failed bakery cooperative—and it seems like someone is determined to eliminate the former members one by one. Can she solve the case before she becomes the next victim?
This was an entertaining and fast-paced read. The author throws more curves at the reader than Sandy Koufax! This reader was hooked from page one and couldn’t wait for the reveal. This book has strong characters, subtle humor and a hint of romance. What more could a reader want? I would definitely recommend this book to other cozy fans.
*I received an ARC of this book. Any opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Loved the cover. well written, full of mystery, intrigue, suspense, friends, murder, secrets, challenges and a very special dog. Penelope finds a dead body where she walks her dog. She is told to stay out of it by a Detective Caleb. Being told that really doesn't stop her and her dog , Teo, a chihuahua. As she follows the clues, they take her to a co-op. Soon she finds herself involved and included into this game of cards. As they start to work together, the closer Penelope and Caleb become. All these murders happen in a town of Bath, Maine. The characters are spot on with every action that leads to a reaction. Really keeps you guessing who dunit plus leads into the next book in this series. Would recommend to everyone.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Dead Man's Hand is the second book in the really good Penelope Sinclair Cozy Murder Mystery Series. Our protagonist, Penelope Sinclair and her adorable, tea cup chihuahua, Teo are on a nice walk early in the morning in the park when Teo discovers a dead body, holding the Jack of Clubs in his outstretched hand. Of course, Penelope and Teo must check it all out even though she is warned to stay away by Detective Caleb Grant and also an anonymous post card arrived at her house warning her off. And with more bodies showing up holding cards, Penelope is definitely intrigued and won't give up investigating. This is a fast, roller coaster ride that keeps you guessing until the end. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to see what Penelope and Teo get into next. I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Penelope and her dog Teo find a body while on a walk. This time there are some interesting clues like a playing card and a wax seal. It seems there is a card game in afoot, and the players aren't voluntary. Following the clues she realizes that the victim and clues involve a bakery co-op that folded under controversy. Detective Caleb warns Penelope not to get involved, but Teo keeps sniffing out clues that keeps her in the game. Next thing she knows the person behind it all has dealt her into the game and there is no way out for her. This was a fast-paced book, with plenty of clues. I enjoyed the mystery that unfolded.
Penelope Sinclair is walking her dog Teo when they come upon a body in the park. He has a playing card in his hand and was part of an old bakery scandal from years past. Then another body shows up with another playing card. This story becomes a dangerous poker game with Penelope and the detective Caleb in the middle of it. She does a lot of investigating where she shouldn't be and poor Caleb is always having to run to bail her out of trouble but the figure out the mystery or do they? A cliff-hanger? I guess we will have to wait and see. I received an arc and this is my honest review.
Dead Man's Hand: A Penelope Sinclair Cozy Murder Mystery, my ninth enjoyable 208-page read from author Tessa Aura. There are so many cozy mysteries out there and so many authors writing them, but they're popular and I read my share of them. “I received a complementary Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I'll read more from this author, up next Felony at the Fall Festival: A Molly Montgomery Cozy Mystery. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018
I received this book as an ARC and I am pleased to leave this voluntary review. This is a quick read and an enjoyable cozy mystery that can be read as a standalone. The book features Penelope Sinclair and her teacup chihuahua, Teo. Bodies begin to pile up and they all have one thing in common- a playing card. Then, Penelope receives a playing card. There are many twists and turns in this cute story. It’s a great summer read.
I laughed at the start of this story at what is divulged about Teo. With multiple dead bodies and numerous game references, this story was worth reading. I thoroughly enjoyed the poker references. Then, for chess to be introduced with a hint of what was sent to Penelope at the end, it put me back on edge a little, with the promise of things to come. I enjoyed this second book in the series. I look forward to the next book!
Penelope and her teacup chihuahua, Teo, find a dead body holding a playing card and of course Penelope has to investigate even though Detective Caleb warns her not to. Penelope is a strong woman with a mind of her own who is also very smart and I would love to be her friend. The story is filled with plot twists and turns and was a very enjoyable read. I received an advance copy of this book for free and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
I like Penelope. She is a snarky, driven woman. And her little dog Teo is a great sidekick. Her relationship with detective Caleb seems to be evolving since the first book in the series. I am also concerned that if Penelope stays in Bath it will pass Cabot Cove as the fictional murder capital of Maine. With it's many puns and similes it was an enjoyable read.
I received an ARC of this story. The characters are interesting, with many back stories. Bakers Row and the 8 members of the co-op provide lots of motives and means. The poker hand and cards hold clues. Penelope and her dog Teo keep finding clues. A hint of romance with Caleb, the detective, implies more to come. Cliffhanger ending. More to come?
Penelope and Teo are at it again! Bodies just drop in their lap and even with danger lurking, they can’t help but take the clues to places they should not go. Crime solving is their cup of tea and they are good at it. Bath, Maine is full of mysteries and Penelope, with her teacup chihuahua, can’t help but get in trouble as they solve these mysteries. Great book.
A dangerous game of cards being played with dead bodies. Penelope is in the middle of this game which has her threatened. A captivating read which has you on the edge of your seat. I received this ARC copy via Booksprouts and recommend this book to other readers.
This is a great story. I loved the characters and cared about what happened to them. The story drew me in right away and kept me glued to the pages. I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was an exciting cozy mystery. Penelope and her dog Teo are on the hunt for who the villain is in the story. Caleb and Penelope are great characters--their conversations are hilarious at times. Good story. Recommend reading.
I never thought I’d enjoy this book so much. Penelope and Teo are the perfect duo. Teo is just the cutest. This is the first book I’ve read from this series but I just may go and chose some more. Such lighthearted fun even though it was about murder. Recommend.
I really enjoyed getting to know Penelope Sinclair and her chihuahua Teo more. Her sarcastic humor made me chuckle. On a walk, Penelope and Teo found a body. A card was found with the body. When a second body was found with another card, it seems like someone is dealing a hand of poker. Penelope finds out that the victims were part of a failed bakery co-op. What happened that made someone want to eliminate the members of the co-op? Penelope and Teo are on the case. Detective Caleb is there to try to keep Penelope safe, but trouble seems to find her. Will they be able to figure out who is behind the deaths before anyone else becomes a victim? I can't wait to see what trouble they get into next.
