4.5/5 ~

Absolutely stunning and poignant. 100% would recommend. Would gift it to several people even.
I just knocked off half a star, because I wish the story/the plot in itself would go a little further, was a little more developed (especially when the character goes from "winter" to "spring") - but maube (probably), I'll round it up before the end of the year. Other than that, the artwork and the character's portrayal were *chef kiss*.

I went into this without knowing nothing about what this was about, and I think that made me even more delighted and touched when I got what this comics was about. Only took a couple of pages tbh. I have to admit that I picked the comics, at first, because of the title (intriguing) and the artwork (gorge). I regret nothing!

It's a beautiful, very moving hommage to trans people first, and to traditional Japanese theatre second: "In the memory of Valeria R. and the 1300 transgender people murdered in Brazil during the 8 years of this project."
I think voicing this hommage through the scope of theatre was very unique, very refreshing, and added layers to it.

It was so poetic, so heartbreaking but also so hopeful. And again, absolutely stunning (the grain, the colours, the details, etc.). I also appreciated a lot the additional pages at the end, which dive into traditional Japanese theatre, about the short story film that came before the comics, about the artists' intentions, about character's design and which list a lot of references (artists, books, movies, music, etc.).

I'm just so obsessed with this comics. I'll definitely check more works by these two artists.

[Is available in PT-BR and French only atm. I hope it's going to be translated in more languages and reach more people.]

Teatro kabuki e identidade trans.

OH WOW. I first decided to buy "Kabuki" because the subject of traditional Japanese theatre is a subject that interests both me and my mom, was I expecting to love this graphic novel so much ? Probably not, but I loved every minute of this one. The people who are behind this graphic novel are showing their pain through this piece of art. There’s not a lot of words in "Kabuki" but for me the drawings are speaking louder than words.

"Humans… I’m a bird that they put in a cage and they want me to sing like before ?"

Kabuki is born as a boy, playing as an actor at a traditional Japanese theatre, one day "he/she" goes on stage and bite ”his/her” finger until it bleeds, with the blood ”he/she" traces a line of eyeliner and colors "his/her" lips but the public don’t accept it and reject "him/her”, after that stage ”he/she" decides to constantly wear a mask to hide ”himself/herself”. Throughout this graphic novel, you follow the story of a quest of identity, Kabuki doesn’t feel good in "his/her" body and hide it behind a mask but with the help of Alma, Kabuki slowly rise from her ashes and starts to accept herself, finding the strength to overcome the obstacles of people insults and rejection to become who she always wanted to be.

In 2025, h*mophobia and tr*nsphobia is still hurting and k*lling every day, men, women, non binary people, transgender people, adults and childrens, if you’re being bullied for who you are, please don’t be afraid to speak. Speak out and be proud of who you are, because you are YOU and you deserve to be who you want to be !!
