This books sits at the crossoroad between History, Local British Traditions (almost folkloric), Statistical data and Science which I love. It starts off setting the baseline at the understanding of the antropogenic causes of climate change, every month presents historical weather related events and facts in britain for the last 100+ years, sunrise, sunset and twilight times across the island, moon phases, cloud facts and basically makes weather science accessible to the lay person to understand how and why weather has changed and what to expect for 2026 in Britain. Think folklore almanac, for the more science-y minded
A really fascinating insight into the British weather throughout the year, full of really interesting information such as the difference between meteorological and astronomical seasons, how various landmarks affect climate etc. It also had handy sections on the forthcoming moon phases, sunrise/sunset times along with historical data for each month such as the most snow on record or most rainfall for each month. I read the entire book over the course of a few weeks as I received a review copy from Netgalley, but I think it would be more enjoyable to just read each relevant chapter/section month by month to really soak it in slowly.
this book is a treasure trove of fascinating weather facts. As someone who enjoys documentaries about extreme weather and phenomena, I’ve always been curious about the science behind the weather.
We all experience the weather daily, and it significantly impacts our lives. In the UK, it’s a constant topic of conversation. However, I often feel like we don’t always understand the trends and patterns that emerge or the underlying science. This almanac, however, provides a comprehensive guide to this information.
