Positives: I love the imagination of the fantasy world, creatures, and races. The author has goblins and elves, but she gave them unique traits, and she created so many inventive, interesting, and thought-out creatures and elements of Ezra city. I enjoyed discovering new parts of the world through the whole book. The themes of overcoming fear and having joy despite darkness were clear and consistent through the story. The characters began with struggles and grew through the events more and more until they had realistically learned those lessons by the end. The characters’ growth felt real and realistic and provided a good example of real humans with real struggles working to move forward. The progression of the story and the variety of situations, problems, and events kept my interest. The story has adventure, action, a wide range of characters, multiple problems, beautiful and interesting settings, layers of antagonists, fun and meaningful dialogue, battles, romance, not easily won resolutions, setbacks, and an end that provides closure without dragging. The elements of Christian fantasy stood out boldly yet were well incorporated in the story. The message about Jesus and the Bible verses fit perfectly into the plot so that it all felt true, relevant, and realistic. The characters felt like real people. They made mistakes, and I felt for them when they met tragedy or difficulties. Negatives The book wasn’t predictable, but it didn’t have surprise or intrigue because the first section revealed the whole back story. The book feels long, and some more editing could have helped. Some elements made the book seem like it was only for Christians. It never came across as something that would turn away non-Christians, but it could cause a bit of confusion.
Overall: A magical adventure and thrilling battle of light vs. darkness
