Rate this book
Miriam Lapp must return to the Amish community of her youth to say goodbye. But goodbye is sometimes easier said than done.

When Miriam Lapp left the Amish community of Bird-in-Hand three years ago, she put the past behind her. But when her sister calls with news that their mother has died suddenly, Miriam swallows her pride one last time and travels back to Pennsylvania.

Miriam’s resolve to stay aloof from the Amish community falters when she learns that the rumors that broke up her engagement with Timothy Kauffman years ago were lies. Could it be that she threw away a chance at life and love, all for nothing? If Timothy weren’t already engaged to marry another woman, maybe they could rekindle their love, but Miriam realizes the past is past. She would never do to Timothy’s f iancée what was done to her. She returns to Indiana hurting, but knowing she did the right thing.

When Miriam’s family calls on her for help, she once again steps up to the task, knowing her sacrifice will yield her no personal gain. But it turns out that peace often surpasses our understanding, and love finds us in the most unlikely of circumstances.

Jealousy and misunderstanding caused them to break off their engagement. Will their love have a second chance when she returns home?

Twenty-three-year-old Miriam Lapp had left the Amish community she grew up in behind after she broke up with her beau, Timothy Kauffman, four years ago. Now living as an Englisher in La Grange, Indiana, with her cousin Abby Johnson, Miriam is happy working in a pediatrician's office. But then one fateful day, she gets a call informing her that her beloved mamm has passed away. Miriam travels home for her mother's funeral, not sure of what awaits her upon her arrival in Pennsylvania.

Timothy Kauffman was heartbroken when his fiancée, Miriam Lapp, broke off their engagement and left their Amish community in Gordonville. He had heard she possibly had an English boyfriend, but had never gotten the real reason for her leaving from Miriam herself. Timothy tried to move on by courting other Amish girls, but has never stopped loving Miriam.

As Miriam struggles with her mother's unexpected death, she finds very little acceptance from her Amish relatives whom she left behind when she left the faith. As Miriam spends more time attempting to make amends with her estranged family, she discovers that perhaps she made a terrible mistake by leaving Timothy so hastily. Is there any hope for their love to rekindle--or was it even really over in the first place?

A PLACE OF PEACE is the third book in the Kauffman Amish Bakery Series by Amy Clipston. Readers may wish to read the first two novels in the series first to get the background information on the characters before beginning A PLACE OF PEACE, although it can also be enjoyed as a stand-alone read. Fans of Amish fiction authors such as Beverly Lewis and Wanda Brunstetter will enjoy this fairly new author to the genre. Forgiveness and faith are the order of the day, and emotions run high throughout this novel. Once readers get started, they will find it hard to stop reading as they will want to know how this mixed-up misunderstanding works itself out. The topic of organ donation is touched upon in the story as it has affected the author personally, while some Amish recipes are included throughout the novel also. Book number four of this series will debut in October 2011 and will be titled A LIFE OF JOY. Be sure to mark it on your calendar!

If this wasn't an Amish Romance -I would have thought that this was a comedy of errors. There was nothing funny about what was happening with Miriam and Timothy. It was sad, nearly to the point of tragic.

This was one of the most unrestful Amish novels I have ever read. The sub-plots were a bit more interesting than the main story line.

Essentially the story is about a woman who has left the Amish life due to several things, one a death of a child and two the break-up of a relationship. Now this woman Miriam, has come home because of her Mother's death.

Relationship mishaps abound, pridefullness takes center stage as well as lying, both things that I thought the Amish shunned and did not do.

The romance is frustrating and occasionally I just wanted to smack Miriam and timothy upside the head or lock them into a room together.

The ending was abrupt and I would have liked to have seen the HEA play out a little earlier.

What I did like is that even though I wasn't totally happy with this book -it does show that even the Amish make mistakes and are just human. Sometimes Christian books can make the antagonists into something people are not...perfect. This book does not do that and that makes me like this book and rate it higher than I normally would have.

While I really liked Miriam & Timothy, I wouldn’t say this is my favorite Amish book by this talented author. (It was a very good one, though!) I did really like all the Spiritual Content and seeing those from the previous books! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series to see what happens with this large—and growing—family next! :)

Miriam left her Amish community four years ago, after a broken romance and before she joined the church. Content with the English life, but still feeling the pull of her Amish roots, she returns to her community at her mother’s sudden death. To her father and brother, she is unwelcome, and her younger sister scorns her, but her older sister and elderly aunt welcome her with open arms. This tale, the third in the series, follows Miriam as she travels the road away from the Amish and then back to it, but where will she stay - in the Amish community or in the English world? Her road is filled with detours and road blocks, the biggest being her failed relationship with her family and the loss of Timothy, the one man she truly loved. This well-written story is interesting as well as entertaining, and you likely will wish you could offer some advice to Miriam! But, finally, eventually, the truth will set everyone free.

Such a sweet story! This is my favorite of the Kaufmann Amish Bakery series so far. I really enjoyed Mariam and Timothy's story and I liked how everything came together nicely.

I also liked the chapters from Jessica and Lindsay's points of view. I'll be interested to find out what happens to them in later books.

Oh, and reading about all the delicious sweets they make in that bakery was making me hungry!

I enjoyed this book! I liked how it picked up a bit after previous books in the series and gave closure into the Miriam/Timothy Kauffman story. We got to reconnect with previous characters and get insights into their current lives. The story itself in this book was very engrossing, and it did have a good message about forgiveness. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author!

Lots of misunderstandings in this novel and the ending exchange between Miriam and Timothy felt forced. Predictable happy ending. Plus is that family trees were included at the front and I referred to them more than once.

The plot line was forced, and the book had so little character development that events in in the story kept taking me by surprise. The narrative was repetitive, and several plot threads were left just dangling at the end. It's been awhile since I read a book this poorly written.

I enjoyed getting to understand the storyline behind Timothy's upset over Miriam's betrayal which was hinted at in the 2nd book of the series, and felt for both Timothy and Miriam at something that could have been avoided had they actually TALKED to each other rather than just assuming something was true without confirming it with each other. One can only hope that they will both have learned their lesson in making assumptions so they can avoid that kind of heartache in the future.
I wasn't a huge fan of this book though. Timothy and Miriam were well-written characters I think, but they were both really annoying at times. Naomi was the only one who had the guts to stand up and tell the truth to Timothy when he thought he was being 'too noble' to break her heart.

I love these Amish books about hope and fee and the importance they play in our lives. Mariam lap left Amish commit community several years ago and returns back after her mother suddenly dies. She faces heart ache from her past. She sees Timothy Kaufman the man she was engaged to and her wounds are reopened. Timothy sees Miriam and still has feelings for her but is in a relationship with someone else. A cute story about how love and God work together.

Miriam Lapp left her Amish community nearly four years ago, when she felt like she no longer belonged. She had been told that her beau Timothy Kauffman was cheating on her, so when an Englishers baby that she was watching dies from SIDS she feels as if everyone blames her and decides the best thing to do is leave. She heads to Indiana hoping for a fresh start. When she receives a call from her sister Hannah telling her that her mother has suddenly passed away she drops everything and goes home, hoping that she can find forgiveness and that her family will welcome her. Instead what she finds is that the only people in her family that welcome her are her married sister Hannah and her spinster aunt Edna, who Miriam stays with when her family doesn't welcome her.. She also learns that the basis of the breakup between her and Timothy were all lies perpetrated by her younger sister Lilly, and those lies have spread throughout the community. When she sees Timothy again she knows that she never stopped loving him, but he is engaged to another, as for Timothy he knows he still loves Miriam but a promise is a promise so he is determined to see his engagement thru to Naomi. So she heads back to Indiana, but finds she no longer enjoys her life there. When another urgent call from her sister brings her back home, will she finally be reconciled with her family, and what about the relationship between Miriam and Timothy does God have a plan for them, or is it to late?

"A Place Of Peace" is the third book in the Kauffman Amish Bakery Series but in my opinion can easily be read as a stand alone work. I haven't read the first two books and had no problems jumping right into this story. The author does provide us with a family tree at the beginning of the book so that its easy to know who is related to who. The characters come to life in this novel, and are quite believable. Miriam left her home due to lies and misunderstandings, but she gives us a good lesson in forgiveness when she forgives her sister, and even helps her on her journey to find true love.

Fans of Amish fiction will love this story, but anyone looking for a story about second chances and forgiveness should also give it a try. I for one am anxious to read the next book in the series!

A complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A Place of Peace by Amy Clipston

This is the third book in Amy Clipston's series, the Kauffman Amish Bakery series.

I read the first book, A Gift of Grace, and you can read my review here. But I skipped the second and jumped right into the third. (Don't worry, I'll go back and read the second!)

In A Place of Peace, we meet Miriam Lapp, who left the Amish community before she was baptized. Even so, the rift between her and her family is so great she might as well be under the shunning...

Miriam is not comfortable in the Englisch world, yet she was always so curious to see it that she didn't quite fit in the Amish world either. But one day she gets news, bad news, from home that her mother has passed away, and Miriam knows she must go home.

When she returns home it is harder than Miriam could have imagined. Her family is at odds with her, and her former boyfriend, Timothy, who broke her heart has a new girlfriend. But why should she care? After all, he cheated on her and that is why she left...

When Timothy proposes to his new girlfriend Miriam simply cannot stay in the community any longer and returns back to the Englisch world...

Does Miriam belong with her family in the Amish world? Or was she meant to go out and explore the Englisch world, and she just has not found her place yet? Will Miriam ever find the peace she so longs for?

Read A Place of Peace to find out!

In reading this book it is so easy to care for Miriam and her well-being. She is such a sweet character, and you can feel her pain and heartache at being torn between two worlds.

It was also nice to get a glimpse at the whereabouts of some of the characters from the first book, but I won't give away any secrets! The books are stand-alone, so you do not need to read them in order, but if you do, you'll get hints at where the characters are from earlier books.

It's a great series with lovable characters that you just feel so involved with. I felt like I was in the story rather than just watching it.

4.5 out of 5 stars!

This is the third book an an Amish series. Is about lies, jealousy, anger and animosity. The Amish are just as human as anyone . Is a story of lost love and misunderstandings. A story of being lied to and believing said lies. Is a mess, but is God's mess. An enjoyable novel. Thanks to the public Library.

This book starts out with Miriam in Indiana and living with her cousin. She get a phone call from her sister about the mother. She then rushes home to Lancaster. When she arrives there she and her cousin stay with their aunt on the back of her father property.

Miriam is struggling to make amends with her father and also with Timothy. She finds out that her sister made lies for she was jealous of her older sister Miriam. Her father and the rest of the community blame her for the death of a child that died of SIDS.

She arrives home for the funeral of her mother's death. Her father makes it clear she not welcome. She hears that her past boyfriend has moved on and is marrying another girl. Does Miriam find the peace is seeking and get her love of her future? find out by reading. I recommend this book. Though I suggest that your read the earlier books first for this book refer to them a bit. "A Gift of Grace", "A Promise of Hope" are the two book before this book.

Miriam Lapp has left her Amish community due to a series of misunderstandings and made a new life for herself in Indiana with her cousin Abby. When her mother dies unexpectedly, Miriam returns home for the funeral and hopes to make peace with her family. After being rebuffed by her father and most of her siblings, Miriam is torn between wanting to stay and rebuild relationships and returning to her "English" life. Her choice is further complicated by her feelings for Timothy Kaufmann, her former fiancee as well as the joy she feels working in the bakery. I read this after Naomi's Christmas so I was a little confused at first but this can be read as a stand alone novel even if you haven't read any of the other Amish Bakery series. Amy Clipston writes better Amish novels than many of the others currently publishing in this genre. Her characters have more personality and emotions than in many other books. A quick light read.

Its been a while since I wanted to read a book in one day. I did this one. I bought Vol 3 without having ever read Vol 1 and 2, I wasn't sure I would enjoy it. The book pulls you right in though. The setting is in Gordonville, PA which is outside Bird-In-Hand. Miriam Lapp had left her Amish roots for 4 years to live in the English world in Indiana with a girlfriend. Due to the death of her mom, she returned to PA. Coming back meant reopening and facing all the wounds and pain that she ran away from. It was a good story. I had never heard of the author Amy Clipston before. She lives in NC so I was a bit skeptical about her development of the Amish life. However,I definitely want to read more of her books.

Read this book in 2012...reread it in 9/2013 Excellent.....needs to be read in order of series to feel the impact of the story.

The third book in Amy Clipston's Kaufmann Amish Bakery series, "A Place of Peace" is a nicely done novel about lost love that is found again.

Clipston has created two believable characters, Miriam and Timothy, who are torn apart by circumstances beyond their control yet never forget each other. Miriam is the deeper of the two characters as she struggles not only with what she thought was Timothy's betrayal but a tragic incident that happened while she was babysitting, as well as her mother's death and her family's reluctance to accept her return from the English world.

With her warm and thoughtful description of the Amish countryside, Amy Clipston lets us discover how Miriam and Tim learn eventually to forgive past hurts and finds peace in the place that means so much to them.

Miriam left the Amish community six years ago when she thought her family and boyfriend, Timothy, didn't want her. She returns when her mother passes away and finds her father and sister has not forgiven her so she returns to her English life. It is a struggle when you know the life of which you have been raised and when you are really not sure where home is. Should she discover why events happened like they did or except that time has moved on without her. And how hard is it to forgive when other people's actions have affected your life?
On page 20 the book refers to a passage in Isaiah--'those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength'

Take a trip to Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania, where you'll meet the women of the Kauffman Amish Bakery in Lancaster County. As each woman's story unfolds, you will share in her heartaches, trials, joys, dreams ... and secrets. You'll discover how the simplicity of the Amish lifestyle can clash with the 'English' way of life---and the decisions and consequences that follow.
A classic boy meets girl, misunderstandings arise, boy loses girl; same thing again, and one more time. I think it was a little overkill on the boy/girl conflicts in this book.
But many other reviewers really liked this one, so maybe its just me.

I love these books. I spend the entire time while I'm reading laughing and crying by turns. These stories stay with you long after they're over.
This book is full of heartache, bitterness, but in the end, forgiveness and God's love. Miriam's entire family learn tough lessons on how short and fragile life really is. A beautiful story that leaves me thinking about my own family members and the unresolved differences and hurt some of us have.

While I enjoy this series, this particular one got a little long - so I skipped the middle to the last 3 chapters. I'm pretty sure this had more to do with me than the plot. Jumping to conclusions and assuming you know what the other person is thinking gets really old after 50 pages or so.
