#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and and if you watch reruns of the game show The Weakest Link you might just catch her winning the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code.
A graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America’s Hall of Fame. Her books have been translated into 32 languages, and she lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.
The Bridgertons, her popular series of historical romance, is currently in production by Shondaland as a Netflix original series starring Julie Andrews, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rége-Jean Page.
Julia Quinn’s Romancing Mister Bridgerton, the fourth installment in the beloved historical romance series, delivers a masterclass in the friends-to-lovers trope. The novel shifts the spotlight to Penelope Featherington, the perennial wallflower who has spent years harboring a secret, unrequited love for the charming, globetrotting Colin Bridgerton. When Colin returns to London from his latest travels, he begins to see Penelope not just as his younger sister’s best friend, but as a witty, intelligent, and captivating woman in her own right. Set against the gossipy backdrop of Regency high society, the narrative leans heavily into the comfort of long-standing familiarity blooming into sudden, intense passion.
The true strength of the novel lies in Penelope’s profound character development. After years of fading into the background in garish dresses chosen by her mother, she finally steps into her own confidence, embracing her sharp mind and shedding the insecurities of her youth. Colin’s evolution is equally compelling; he grapples with a lack of direction and the desire to find his own purpose in a family of high achievers. Their romance is built on a foundation of genuine mutual respect and shared humor, making his eventual realization of his feelings feel both earned and deeply satisfying. Quinn skillfully balances their emotional vulnerability with the sparkling, rapid-fire banter that defines the Bridgerton series.
Beyond the central romance, the book brings the overarching mystery of Lady Whistledown's identity to the forefront, adding a thrilling layer of tension and high stakes to the plot. The eventual revelation—and Colin's reaction to it—tests their relationship in a way that proves the maturity and depth of their bond. Romancing Mister Bridgerton is arguably the emotional anchor of the entire series, rewarding invested readers with a beautiful, character-driven story about being truly seen, accepted, and loved. It remains a standout Regency romance that perfectly captures the magic of finding your soulmate in your best friend.
2/27/2026: from going from not wanting to read these books to watching the tv shows because of a friend and now because of the same friend I am collecting these editions. Sighs, life of a reader (I love it). I caved and bought this yesterday, even though I really shouldn't have, and now I need to find the third seeing as this is the fourth. I don't think the rest are out yet...
An automatic star off for Colin Bridgerton's anger management issues. This one should/could have been the most interesting for the plot of Penelope and the Lady Whistledown mystery. This one dragged along way too slow for my taste - but it's still really good.
