December 1971. The Bangladesh War of Liberation is in the middle of the critical final battles. While being subjected to all the traumas of war, Doctor Meena struggles against the forces that threaten to undermine her commitment to the people she serves, as the full force of an army is unleashed against her and her community.
Confronting the evils aligned against them is the only way of ensuring their survival. Any other course of action could result in unthinkable consequences, as they are plunged into a war of liberation, where the enemy is not always outside your inner circle and where women are on the frontline.
Can Doctor Meena save her people from the aggression of a volatile army major who is intent on their destruction? Can she save herself?
A great read. An insight into the struggles of medics during times of war and rebellion in India and Bangladesh. The characters were very believable and each one had an interesting back story. Government officials, military, rebels, NGO volunteers and various religions all get caught up in the struggles. This book sheds light on the amazing work of Doctors and medical people in the midst of war and rebellion. The main character Dr. Meena is such a strong person and draws you into her life. I was left wanting more.......
Brilliantly written novel telling the story of a true heroine at the time of Bangladeshi independence. Meena is based on the author's witnessing of incredible female medics of more recent times. Sometimes harrowing, it's incredible how this author is able to delve into the female experience during war. Meena will stay with me. I learned a lot about the history of this region during the 70s of which I knew nothing. Huge accomplishment by this author.
A wonderful story that brings to life the life of the people that brought about the birth of a nation. Their struggles and determination as ordinary people faced with major obstacles in a dangerous time. This read is a hard one to put down as you just have to know what's next in this wonderful adventure. Excellent read and an easy 5 stars.
