Murder Most Haunted

Rate this book
As the snow falls, the haunting begins... Get ready for the most gripping cosy murder mystery debut of the year.

'A delightfully engaging debut, starring one of the most amusing and unusual sleuths I’ve come across. Best enjoyed with a nice glass of sherry!' Tess Gerritsen

A grand country estate.
On her last day as a Detective, Midge McGowan is given the retirement present from a ticket to take part in a haunted house tour. She’ll have to spend the weekend before Christmas ghost-hunting in an isolated mansion with a group of misfits, including a know-it-all paranormal investigator and a has-been pop star.

An impossible crime.
It isn’t long before the tour starts to spiral out of control. Midge and the guests see an unsettling figure walking the grounds late at night. Then the unthinkable happens – someone is murdered in a room that’s been locked from the inside.

A Christmas they might not survive.
Heavy snow cuts them off from help, the house’s own dark secrets begin to surface, and Midge can’t shake the creeping sense that they are walking into a nightmare. Could a ghost really be responsible, or is the culprit one of the guests?

ARC for review. To be published October 7, 2025.

3.5 stars

Midge McGowan, just retired as a mid-level police officer. She spent most of her tenure stuck in the property room. As a going away gift the force gave her a weekend trip to a haunted mansion (for one. Despite the fact she has a wife. Classy.) Her wife then forced her to go.

On the bus she meets the other attendees, the host (a former police officer, the coach driver, a pop star (incognito) a doctor and his wife and a young man who investigates the paranormal. They head off the Atherton Hall in search of the White Lady of Atherton Moor. And they all get more than they bargained for.

This was really cute, a fun little mystery that I’m happy to recommend. So if it’s something that sounds good to you, pick it up!

Go for the audiobook. Murder Most Haunted is a handsomely assembled murder mystery. While its twists and turns stay comfortably within the genre’s usual boundaries—absent of any real surprises—it’s still an enjoyable read in that familiar, 'catching up with an old friend' kind of way.

Kudos to the audiobook production, particularly the podcast segments, which feature proper theme music, ambient sound design, and interviews voiced by an ensemble cast; these touches add real depth to the immersion. That said, there’s a slight disconnect between the podcast and the narrative sections—some characters are interpreted so differently by each narrator that they almost don’t sound like the same person, making the transitions a bit jarring.

As for the story itself, while the culprit’s reveal comes somewhat out of left field, the journey there is consistently engaging. The dry British humour is also a delight, serving as a welcome counterbalance to the darker undercurrents. Overall, Murder Most Haunted doesn’t break new ground, but its eccentric cast and polished audio production make it an easy recommendation if you’re in the mood for a classic whodunit.

This was such a fun debut! The Clue-like setup made it an absolutely perfect read for this time of year. It’s cozy, twisty, and mysterious. Every character felt distinct and memorable, but Noah easily stole my heart and I’m convinced we’d be best friends in real life.

Midge makes for a fantastic lead. She’s clever, sharp-witted, and endlessly entertaining. She really ties the entire mystery together and gives the story its spark. Overall, this was an incredibly enjoyable read, and I’m genuinely excited to see what Emma Mason writes next!

I really wanted to enjoy this cozy mystery, but it just wasn’t for me. From the beginning, the story made being 55 sound ancient, which was discouraging. There’s also a lot of focus on the main character’s weight, and it didn’t seem to add anything meaningful to the plot or her personality. The pacing was slow, and I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters. It had potential, but overall, it just didn’t hold my interest.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you to William Morrow and NetGalley for the ARC.

Just when I thought I had figured out who the murderer was the story would change up a little bit and I would question if I was actually right. This is one of those rare mysteries where I didn't expect the twisty parts and was surprised by who the killer turned out to be. The ending made me tear up a little as well. I really enjoyed this story, it was a much needed break from what I've been reading lately. If you enjoy mystery, I would definitely recommend this book.

All the feels, all the twists! This book was legitimate a cozy mystery, however, there was far more emotion and thought behind the characters that I was expecting.

I wouldn’t necessarily call this a Christmas book, maybe more along the lines of taking place in the winter. I don’t recall Christmas really having anything to do with the book. However, I can totally imagine reading this cozy book during the cold of fall/winter with a hot chocolate under a nice blanket. It took me a bit of time to really remember and connect with each character and who was associated with who. That was a little frustrating, however everything did come together, not just in my own brain, but also in the whole book.

The narration was a full cast. The listed narrators are Jacquelin King, Jonathan Case, Ayesha Antoine, Barnaby Edwards, Angus King, Anna Acton and Roy McMillan. Most of the narrators were excellent and helped my brain picture each character and their personalities. There were a few times I felt it was a little cringy, but really not worth singling out.

I’d absolutely recommend as a cozy mystery. I loved the depth and the backdrop of the winter storm and ghost hunting. Really fun!

Thank you NetGalley for the read. I always love a new author and new listen! Great book.

*insert Jake Peralta "cool motive, still murder" gif here*

The mystery itself was pretty good. ONCE THE AUTHOR GOT TO IT. It was plenty twisty & complex and I didn't see the reveal coming, so that was good.

My issues with this book came from the writing and characterization of the main character.

*SPOILERS*

First of all, the pacing is WHACK. A murder takes place fairly early in the story. But we're halfway through before our intrepid main character starts to think that "hey maybe the dead guy in the bathtub didn't nearly decapitate himself with a letter opener in the bath afterall". And it's not until literally the 70% mark before she actually starts investigating. Until then, it's lots of arguing and fussing about.

My other issue is with the author's OBSESSION with telling the reader that our main character, Midge, is FAT. Like SHE'S SO FAT YOU GUYS. Midge is 55-years-old and recently retired from the police force, where she was in charge of the evidence locker. As a retirement gift, the police force gives her a certificate to go on a ghost hunting excursion at a manor in the country. I don't think the author has ever met a 55-year-old woman because if she hadn't explicitly stated in the first chapter that Midge was 55, I would assumed that she was 75 by the way she's written. OH AND SHE'S FAT. HAVE I MENTIONED THAT? We're told Midge uses a cane BECAUSE SHE'S FAT. She eats a salad for lunch and has to tell her travelling companions that she's eating it because she actually *likes* salads...AND NOT BECAUSE SHE'S ON A DIET (BECAUSE SHE'S FAT, YO). The tour guide gives her an extra lunch voucher BECAUSE SHE'S FAT. A couch becomes "too small to seat two" when Midge sits on it (CAUSE SHE'S FAT DONTCHA KNOW). She's constantly HEAVING herself out of furniture because that's apparently the only way FAT people can move. When the tour group gets trapped in the manor house, there's talk of rationing the food which is a HUGE INCONVENIENCE for Midge SINCE SHE'S FAT. (But weirdly, a few chapters later the waning food supply isn't an issue as one of the other people on the tour starts nervous-baking dozens and dozens of cookies and muffins...which Midge eats tons of BECAUSE SHE'S OMG SO FAT. I swear the author gave up the rationing idea and pivoted to the stress-baking just so she could hammer the FAT thing home.) She's excited to have a bed all to herself since her wife didn't join her on the trip; she feels like she takes up too much of their bed BECAUSE SHE'S FAT. (But her wife Bridie eventually shows up and Midge is back to sleeping in the fetal position so she doesn't take up too much room in the bed WITH HER FATNESS.) And I *liked* the character of Midge. She was smart and rational and competent and kind. She deserved better than being called FAT every few pages (seriously, her fatness is mentioned more in this one little novel than Harry Potter's scar is mentioned through all 7 HP books) and she definitely deserved better than her bitch of a wife. And she deserved better than what lead to the motive of our murderer. See, many years before, Midge was raped by the copper who ran the ghost hunting company and ended up dead in the bathtub. She became pregnant but gave the child up and the rat bastard copper had her reassigned to the evidence locker so he wouln't have to see her. This drives the dying Bridie to exact her revenge on behalf of Midge.

I wanted to love this book. It has everything I like: a hodge-podge of people forced to work together (and be suspects!), the hint of hauntings, a clever detective, a basically-locked-room mystery. Just a shame it was bogged down by dreadful pacing and all the FAT stuff.

This book was a not good in my opinion. Take it as you will. You've got these overweight police officer (she handles the evidences and such) that is retiring. As a gift her colleagues offered her Ghost Hunting tour of 3 days but arriving their people start dying and Midge must discover whodunit it.

First of all, look at the ratings - not one gave 5 stars and almost all gave it 3 to 4 stars. Even people who receives book as ARC which usually are more sympathetic as they want to receive more books so giving less than 3 stars is not good. 3 Stars is bad.

So what's wrong with this book? Well the writer politics for once and their constant wavering of banners that make you not enjoy the plot. In the first 100 pages we get to know this woman and her main characterstics accordingly with the author are (in no particular order)
a) overweight
b) LGBT
c) vote labour minus once when she voted elsewhere due to her partner who said Gordon Brown wasn't good

Is this relevant to the plot? Does it enhance our reading experience? Nothing.
The author think just because she is giving us some virtual signalling that we will immediately love the book. Well read the people that buy the book not those idiot critics that revelled anytime that anyone mention lgbt, left leaning or overweight is normal people.

The problem with being FAT character is that in a blink of a way you go from waving the banner against fatphobia to be a fat... how do you call someone who doesn't like fat people? (I mean , to these people exist even?)
The author mentions she is fat around 50 times in the first 100 pages, from using cane because she is fat, need an extra seat, eats salads etc. It's boring and please don't start me about her partner...

Now what about the story of the book? It's a revenge tale, I won't say much but it's due to Midge. Again, my main problem was the virtual signalling.

If you enjoy a LGBT, Overweight, Anti-Men book - which turns out to be a mystery as well, then go for it. I am disappointed to say the least. Woke crap ruined a good revenge story.

Murder Mystery + Eccentric Characters + Graphic Audio Elements + Abandoned at Haunted Mansion

I want to start off by saying that the audio version of this book was so fun. I would highly recommend that reading format over eyeball reading so you can hear the graphic audio and podcast elements as well as the full cast of characters!

This book follows Midge who is a retired police detective and is gifted a haunted hotel gift certificate as a retirement gift. Begrudgingly, she is convinced to go by her wife, and she is introduced to a variety of eclectic characters who are also partaking in this event, including ghost hunter who is determined to document a podcast about this haunted mansion.

Murders start happening and everyone is a suspect. It reminded me of Clue with the guessing aspect! Was it one person on the trip who is murdering people or is it the ghost of the mansion?!

I had such an enjoyable time listening to this book and I would definitely recommend it to my fellow cozy murder mystery lovers!

This book was sent to me by NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I've sat on this review for a bit because I wasn't really sure what to say, so instead I made some bullet points.

The Good...
+ I liked the setting of the book. It's set during winter, there's snow and the cast of characters are isolated. Which was a big plus!
+ I liked the diverse group of characters
+ The mystery kept me hooked and prob the only reason I kept going.
+ I liked the twist at the end.

The Weird...
+ The reason for their isolation I found strange. The house was like in the middle of a firing field?

The Ugly...
+ The FMC was hard to relate to. She was extremely unlikeable and hard to follow at times.
+ Senseless animal deaths always drops a point for me. I didn't think it added anything to the story.
+ This book's FMC was overweight and the author decided that her weight should keep being mentioned but in a very negative light. There was fat shaming in this book over and over again and it left me feeling gross. It wasn't necessary, like at all.

Thank you Publisher for a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

DNF for me. [at around 60%]

It‘s just not for me, the pacing feels totally off, characters are really unlikable and I really hate how much the book emphasises on Midges weight - which does not in the slightest have ANYTHING to do with the story.

Det Midge McGowan is retiring & at her leaving do, she receives the retirement present from hell: a haunted house weekend. Initially balking at the idea, she is persuaded to go by her wife, Bridie, who is currently ill & undergoing chemotherapy & who wants her out from under her feet for a weekend. When Midge meets up with her fellow travellers there's a well-to-do couple, a paranormal investigator with a podcast, & a has-been pop star alongside the tour operator, & a talkative coach driver making a very eclectic 7 people.

It starts snowing as they set off & on arriving at the house where they will be staying it seems they may be snowed in for the weekend. The ghost hunting begins with a séance & a tarot reading - all of which Midge finds faintly preposterous. When one of the group is found murdered in a room locked from the inside the next morning, some of the guests are positive that the rumoured 'White Lady' ghost is responsible. Midge disagrees & it seems she is right to as the coach tyres have been slashed preventing them from leaving & their phones have disappeared. Can she solve the mystery in time?

This was quite a good cosy mystery with a well-worked out plot. I found it difficult to warm to Midge as a main character at first, but then I pictured her as being played by a middle-aged Miriam Margolyes & that helped. I do think that she was a little bit too timid though, & her characterisation focused too much on her weight at times. I'd definitely read another 'Midge Mystery' though.

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Random House UK/Transworld Publishers/Bantam, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

A classic whodunnit- complete with a grump sleuth!

Midge isn’t a character that will be forever remembered as fun loving, cheerful or loving… but she will be remembered as the grumpy- crime solving cop that grows on you as the book goes on. I loved that Midge wasn’t the “ideal” cheerful character, and that she had more depth than some other small town sleuths.

What starts off as your classic haunted house/ghost story quickly turns into a clue-esque whodunnit that is perfect for a cozy night reading by the fire!

A solid win!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Now this is how you do an audiobook.
I thought this was such a great listen! Would I have enjoyed it as much if I’d used my eyeballs instead of my ears? Honestly, I’m not sure—but I doubt it. That’s not to say I wouldn’t have liked the story itself. It’s engaging, well-written, and perfectly suited for spooky season. But the audio production? That’s what makes it special.

It’s a full-cast narration featuring Jacqueline King, Jonathan Case, Ayesha Antoine, Barnaby Edwards, Angus King, Anna Acton, and Roy McMillan. Other than the main female narrator, Jacqueline King, I couldn’t tell you who voiced which roles—but together, they were excellent. King, though, absolutely shines (as always). Listening to her is like getting a warm hug in auditory form, and her voice fits the FMC, Midge McGowan, flawlessly.

The production itself is top-notch. I loved the subtle sound effects and tonal shifts used for things like phone calls and reports—it made the story feel layered and immersive without ever being distracting. While I wouldn’t quite call this a “cozy mystery,” it carries that same comforting energy in parts, even as it dips into paranormal elements, a locked-room setup, and a twisty, satisfying finale.

All in all, it’s ear candy for spooky season—clever, cozy, and completely worth the listen.
I was fortunate to receive a complimentary ALC from Harper Audio via NetGalley, which gave me the opportunity to share my voluntary thoughts.

How I Rate
Because I mostly read ARCs, I focus on how I think fellow readers with similar tastes will respond. I sometimes round up or down based on pacing, prose, or overall impact, and I try to keep my personal preferences from weighing too heavily.

⭐️ 1 Star – Finished, but not for me; I never DNF ARCs.
⭐️⭐️ 2 Stars – Struggled due to writing, content, or editing issues.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 Stars – Decent read with untapped potential; recommend with some reservations.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars – Really enjoyed it and would recommend for several reasons.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars – Exceptional; lingers in my mind well after reading. A story I’d gladly revisit.

Sorry to say that this one just really did not resonate with me.

There are a lot of characters, none of which I really cared for, and also a ton of suspects...

We open up with a slew of people who are headed off to an old mansion that has a haunted history. They are each there for their own kind of reason, but Midge seems to be the one who really does NOT want to be there at all...
And, the story mostly revolves around her.

Many things do NOT go as planned, and a murder occurs at the very beginning of the book. Thus causing a full on investigation. Unfortunately, it will NOT be by the police, due to snow... no phones... no means of transportation, etc, etc.

As we float through each day, the unease becomes more and more obvious, but no clues as to who was the murderer, or why the person was murdered...

We do eventually get there, and I was totally surprised at the culprit! But, for some reason, I was just not that enthralled with this one.

3 stars for me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Again, this is only MY opinion, and you might LOVE this one, so please, if it sounds like something that might interest you, give it a try!

It has already been released! So please, look for it on shelves now!!

Midge McGowan has worked most of her life as a Detective working in the property room. As a retirement present, the police force gives her a weekend trip to a haunted house tour at Atherton Hall. Mige is not looking forward to spending the weekend with a group that includes a paranormal investigator looking for proof of the White Lady and a Pop Star. When a snowstorm leaves them stranded and one of their group is found murdered in a room locked from the inside, the tour group must determine if a ghost is responsible or if one of the guests is a murderer.

This was a fun closed-room mystery. The group includes plenty of unlikable characters, each a strong suspect, and the haunted house setting adds to the intrigue. My main issue with this story is the repeated focus on the main character’s weight. The story mentions Midge’s weight several times, and the continuous description of her weight distracted me from the story. However, I still enjoyed the mystery, and the ending took me by surprise.

Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow Publishing for the opportunity to review Murder Most Haunted. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thanks to Netgalley and Harper audio for providing me a copy of this book. This was a fun “who dun it” mystery with a cast of colorful characters. I honestly think my favorite part of this was that there was a full cast on the audiobook, so I don’t know that I would have had the same experience just reading it. An unlikely to meet otherwise, group of people go on a planned vacation to a supposedly haunted mansion. Chaos ensues, murder occurs, and multiple people appear to be suspects. I didn’t find the storyline overly original and the reveal fell flat for me but I did enjoy the quirky character personalities and setting. A fun read but not a favorite.

Audiobook Review: Murder Most Haunted by Emma Mason
I would like to thank NetGalley for the opportunity to enjoy this novel this holiday season.
Emma Mason delivers a cozy yet atmospheric mystery that blends ghostly chills with small-town charm. Murder Most Haunted invites listeners into a world where the supernatural brushes against everyday life, and secrets linger in the shadows of haunted halls.

Narration: The audiobook narration is a standout. The narrator captures the eerie undertones without losing the warmth of the cozy mystery genre. Distinct character voices make it easy to follow the cast, and the pacing keeps the suspense alive while still allowing space for humor and heart.
Story: The plot balances paranormal intrigue with a classic whodunit structure. Mason’s writing is witty and layered, offering both spine-tingling moments and lighthearted banter. The haunted setting feels vivid in audio, with descriptive passages that translate beautifully to spoken word.
Overall Impression: This is a perfect listen for fans of paranormal cozies who enjoy a touch of humor alongside their mysteries. The audiobook format enhances the atmosphere, making the ghostly elements more immersive. It’s engaging, entertaining, and a delightful seasonal read.

Recommended for: Listeners who love haunted house settings, cozy mysteries with quirky characters, and audiobooks that bring both chills and charm.

Fifty-five-year-old Midge McGowan is retiring after thirty years as a police detective and her colleagues have given her a very unusual retirement gift: a ticket to spend the weekend before Christmas in a haunted house. The reason? The tour company, Haunting Holiday Excursions, is run by a former police officer, John Rendell, and HR get discounted tickets. Midge doesn’t want to go, especially as it will mean leaving behind her wife, Bridie, who is having chemotherapy, but Bridie persuades her that she’ll be fine for a few days and that it will be a good experience for Midge.

Soon, Midge finds herself getting off the bus at Atherton Hall with a small group of other guests: Dr Mortimer and his invalid wife, Gloria; Noah, who hosts a paranormal podcast; and Rona, a pop star in remission from a drug addiction. The bus driver, Harold, also ends up staying at the Hall with them after heavy snow leaves the roads impassable and cuts them off from the rest of the world. Almost as soon as they arrive, the guests begin to experience sightings of the White Lady of Atherton Moor drifting around the grounds of the estate, although not everyone believes they have truly seen a ghost. When their host, Rendell, is found dead in the bath, however, they have to decide whether ghosts are the culprits or whether there’s a human killer on the loose.

This is the book I thought A Ghost Hunter’s Guide to Solving a Murder by F.H. Petford was going to be! Unlike that other book (which was good, but not as advertised), this one has an actual ghost hunter in it, in the form of Noah who arrives with his cameras and recording equipment hoping to get new material for his podcast. The book also has an interesting and unusual detective character in Midge, who is quickly dismissed – sometimes very cruelly – by the others as an overweight, middle-aged woman with no fashion sense and no social skills. It was great to see her come into her own and find her own identity away from the slightly overpowering Bridie.

Apart from Midge, the other characters feel like stereotypes at first: Noah, the ‘woke’ young person who clashes with Harold, the racist, sexist older man; Rona, the shallow pop star with a wild lifestyle; the domineering doctor and his fragile wife who takes to her bed at the first sign of danger. However, most of these people turn out to have secrets or hidden depths and aren’t quite what they appear to be on the surface.

The murder mystery element of the book is interesting; Midge never seriously considers Noah’s theory that ghostly activity is responsible, but even she has to admit that there are some spooky similarities between the murders taking place in the present and those described in an old diary belonging to the Atherton family doctor. My only criticism is that I found the killer and the motive too easy to guess, so wasn’t surprised at all when the solution was revealed. Still, this was an entertaining novel and the good news is that it’s the first in a series, with the second Midge McGowan mystery coming next year!

Thank you to William Morrow, NetGalley, and Emma Mason for the opportunity to read Mason’s debut novel, Murder Most Haunted, as an ARC!

Let me start by saying this wasn’t my typical read, and in all honesty, there were several times I wondered if I was going to make it through the book at all. It wasn’t a “bad” book, but it definitely wasn’t a “for me” book. Or perhaps I just wasn’t in the headspace for “cozy.”

The book begins with DS Midge on the eve of her retirement from property records, where she receives the paltry gift of A Haunted Christmas Weekend for one courtesy of the Haunting Holiday Excursions worth 175£! [Honestly, that whole scene just made me so sad for Midge, and I could see how her character was going to be treated throughout the rest of the book, and I wasn’t wrong.] The book then shifts to the coach ride where we meet the rest of the tour group: a washed up pop-star in hiding, a skeptical doctor & his fragile wife, and a know-it-all paranormal investigator; all, along with Midge, the tour host, and coach driver, on their way to Atherton Hall to discover the secrets of the White Lady of the Moor, and the mysterious deaths that plagued the Atherton family. Not long after arrival, the tour spirals out of control as history seems to be repeating itself when they discover one from their group dead, behind a locked door. Is there really a ghost responsible, or is one of their own a murderer?

It’s giving, “it was Professor Plum, in the library with the candlestick” vibes.

I enjoy mystery/psych thrillers, and horror, and from the description of the book, I was really thinking it would be a good mystery/thriller that kept me engaged and racing to the end. Instead, it’s very much a “cozy,” locked-room (in this case estate), murder mystery. If anyone is familiar with Hallmark’s Mystery channel, this book would fit perfectly there; it reads like an Aurora Teagarden mystery. The downside for this debut novel is that at least the Aurora Teagarden mysteries keep me hooked, and this was very put down-able…

I think Mason shows promise as this is her debut novel, but I don’t know if it’s just the dry English humor, or the way Midge’s character was portrayed, but it just rubbed me the wrong way, and as a result I had a difficult time connecting with the story and characters.

I think the way Midge was portrayed is what bothered me the most… Literally, she’s all the things: she’s fat, she’s “disabled” (though she would tell you it’s because she’s “overweight, not injured,” and has a bum knee requiring a cane to get around as a result), she’s a lesbian, she’s “autistic,” but I’m not going to come out and say she is (I may be projecting here with my own neurospicy traits), and she’s a great detective who was never given a chance… Perhaps she’s Dr. House if House was a detective instead of an MD? It’s like Mason wrote Midge to be this intentionally unlikeable character who is supposed to grow on you, but barely does. If anything I felt nothing but sorry for her character the entire time; the way the group literally forgot her presence, her name, and even poked fun at her. She could have been this great, strong character, think Angela Lansbury in Murder, She Wrote, but instead we got this “all the stereotypes” curmudgeon. If we’re going to have LGBTQIA+ representation, can we please have more than just the overweight, older lesbian, autistic coded main character??

Anyway, I digress… All in all, I’d give it 3.5/5 stars (rounded up to 4). I think it could be good. I saw somewhere that it may be a part of a series (A Midge McGowan Mystery #1), but I want more from Midge. I want her to break out from her shell, become independent, sassy, and still be this badass detective we all know she can be!

This was a fun and cozy locked-door mystery, that had a good cast of characters and a bit of paranormal intrigue. The story follows the newly retired Midge, who goes on a ghostly weekend getaway as a part of a retirement present. When her and the others arrive at Atherton Hall, all seems well until a murder throws everything into chaos. Not to mention the snow and local firing range prevent the group from seeking help right away. What else could possibly go wrong? And is the ghost of the manor responsible? This would make a great book to read in the winter to match the snow-filled atmosphere, and one thing I particularly like is how the story incorporates audio from one of the guest's paranormal podcast recordings. I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook through NetGalley, and I hope other readers enjoy it as much as I did!

Midge, is an unusual main character, but you find yourself liking her more and more as the story goes on. Rhona was a hoot, especially the way the narrator presented her. The audiobook really brought this story to life. There were several narrators, and it came across as if you were watching a play. With a locked room mystery vibe, the story reads like a cozy, and has a satisfying ending. Keep in mind, this is not a traditional cozy mystery because it has language in it but is still a fun read/listen.

I was really excited about the premise! But it was a total letdown.

The characters are the biggest problem. Super cookie cutter. An alcoholic, a paranormal investigator, a pop star, an abusive husband and the abused wife. The mc is fat. We were told that at least once a chapter the whole book. We get it. She’s fat. None of the characters were likable or even tolerable.

Midge, newly retired is gifted a weekend away at a haunted house weekend. Reluctant, her wife insists she go so Midge ends up surrounded by over friendly strangers (which she does not enjoy) and tapped in a supposedly haunted house when their tour guide - and a man she knows - is found dead. With an eager young paranormal investigator, an old pop star, a doctor and his wife and an abrasive nee helpful driver, Midge can’t help but collect clues. They’re trapped, alone — Let the endless bickering and chaotic attempts to solve the case ensue.

It was a fun murder mystery. Each character had a bold personality and though Midge was used to fading into the background and they often talked over her, she slowly grew more confidence and surety in herself and her choices just by being around them all. Secrets were revealed throughout and the pace was fast and kept up a steady stream of clues and amusing interactions.

However, I wasn’t a massive fan of any of the characters and for a book that consisted of ceaseless bickering and our main character quiet in the background, I needed to care more about them all. I do think the group dynamic was well done and everyone had a very unique voice and personality and they all played their role well and I found end was satisfying.

Overall an easy murder mystery with an eclectic cast.

❄️ M Y S T E R I O U S M O N D A Y review ❄️ featuring “Murder Most Haunted” by Emma Mason!

Detective Midge McGowan is finally retiring from the police force after 30 years. As a retirement gift she is given a weekend trip to a haunted mansion. Midge’s wife convinces her to go where she is introduced to a group of colourful and eclectic characters much like herself. Among them is a ghost hunter who hopes to capture the hauntings on camera throughout the weekend.

When murders start happening, everyone quickly becomes a suspect! Tires slashed, missing phones and being snowed in are only a few examples of what is preventing them from leaving the mansion. Are the rumours true about the place being haunted by “The White Lady” or is there an actual murderer amongst them in the group?

💭 What an entertaining and clever debut novel from Emma Mason! I loved the Clue like mystery vibes mixed together with hunting for ghosts and solving a murder! Cozy, sharp witted, and twisted at times, this mystery is perfect for reading during a snow storm or by the Christmas tree!

Thank you kindly to @emmawritesagain @williammorrowbooks @harpercollinsca @netgalley for my #gifted copy in exchange for my honest review! This book is out now and perfect for readers who enjoy a bit of murder within their holiday reads!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ALC

Murder Most Haunted was such a fun, twisty mystery! It gave me total Clue vibes; a classic whodunit set in a haunted house with a small cast of quirky, suspicious characters.

The story follows a newly retired woman who joins a weekend getaway at a supposedly haunted manor. She’s joined by a doctor and his wife, a famous guest and a supernatural podcaster and of course, someone doesn’t make it out alive. The tension, twists and humor kept me hooked from start to finish.

I highly recommend the audiobook! Some chapters are presented as snippets from the podcast, complete with sound effects, background music and a full cast! It adds so much depth and immersion to the story. I genuinely never guessed who the murderer was which made the ending such a shock!

I received this audiobook as an advance listening copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

3.5/5!

I absolutely adore an isolated setting paired with a group of unlikely people paired with a murder.

Murder Most Haunted is Emma Mason’s debut book and it did not disappoint as a fun Christmastimes set mystery.

This book feels very Clue-esque with a cast of characters who can be quite bumbling at times and are all a bit suspicious. The disgraced pop star. The former policewoman hiding her identity. The doctor and his wife who tragically lost their son. The podcaster. All top-tier additions to make an entertaining group of sleuths.

Is it a ghost or is it a murderer? Not the debate you usually see in mysteries, but one that made for great fun and allowed the history of the estate to be a player in the story.

If you’re looking for a lighter Christmas mystery with an isolated setting, this is a solid contender!
