This book was fairly basic which actually made it nice to read. It didn’t overwhelm me with complicated steps to follow and just focused on good basic communication skills like active listening. One thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the author would say things like, “your introverted nature can be a gift!”…just because I’m reading this book does not make me an introvert. I thought that assumption odd. Another aspect that bothered me was this book focused so heavily on office-based co-worker communication and didn’t go over any other scenarios like speaking with family and friends or even clients. Overall I felt the tone was very encouraging and great! I loved that there was a heavy focus on listening and showing empathy and consideration for the other person. I enjoyed the tips for public speaking and networking. I hope I don’t overthink my future interactions now and can just breathe and make communication feel natural.
Practical and Encouraging for anyone facing social anxiety
One of my biggest challenges has always been social anxiety—especially when it comes to public speaking or talking in large groups. I’m not even an introvert, but those moments still feel overwhelming. This book gave me few practical tips to face those fears head-on. I especially liked the part about using introverted strengths and navigating awkward silences. The step-by-step tools really helped me feel more prepared and less nervous. If you’re looking for a self-help guide to feel more confident in conversations and everyday interactions, this book is a great place to start.
Rating it for usefulness for me, not so much the content. If you get a lot of social anxiety or freeze up in social or business interactions tips in this book could be helpful. I am not that person.
Parts didn’t apply to me at all, but I’m glad I stuck w it bc there were useful parts in the second half, esp regarding follow ups in strategic networking
