Hm, maybe I am a prude. It's something I'm working on, but I’ve since learned to be less critical of my wilder book choices because I’ve seen the crazy ass shit people are reading on this site. I'm rather vanilla in comparison! Especially taking into account that “taken by the Minotaur" genre or all of those “probed by alien” books, and it’s like… damn, there really aren't any kinky curiosities left on this planet that haven't be satiated by the power of literature. No thirst that can’t be quenched! That's right, despite my hang-ups (of which I have many, it would seem), I still recognize all of these taboo subjects to be true literature. Real art will always push boundaries, and if that means we have to read a book about a milk man being milked, man, then we must persevere. Onward and upward! Anyway, let’s move on because I’m starting to sound like a character written by Noah Baumbach (specifically Adam Driver in While We’re Young). So yeah, I’ve got to admit that Just for Practice left me a bit scandalized as I'm sitting here gasping and fainting and shit. Seriously, even though I read this alone with no one around, I was looking over my shoulder like Orpheus to make sure I wouldn't be caught with this bad boy in my hand. Enough stalling, let's talk about it already! Just for Practice is about a college student named Emmett who decides to ask his step-brother, Kade, for tips on how to woo a girl, only for him to end up getting a hell-of-a lot more than just the tip. Aye! Here’s the thing, I’ve mentioned my hang-ups, yeah? Well, the whole “not technically related” sub-genre is a big one, which again, is irritating because I actually really enjoyed this book’s love story. Ignoring Kade's Mortal Kombat ass name, he was actually quite charming and the fact that Jenny Pineapple was able to convey a naturalistic progression to his and Emmett’s relationship in a mere hundred or so pages is a feat of human achievement that no brain-dead A.I. could ever hope to recreate. No soulless, art stealing machine could possibly replicate the ingenuity of human perversion!
I like these kinds of books because they prove that us gays can also be the front and center of bad art. It’s a humbling kind of thing, a realization that allows us queer folk to exist in three dimensions. Understanding that we too can create garbage, well, it's a beautiful thing. Besides, I’m totally aware that a lot of people don’t think twice about the “step-siblings” thing because any given person's reading habits can oscillate between ultra wholesome ooey-gooey, lovey-dovey bullshit or diving headfirst into the freakiest erotica nowadays. I mean, the most popular television show of the last decade heavily featured an incestuous couple (Game of Thrones), and yet, I still find the dynamic odd. I don’t know, it’s just something I can’t fully move past, you know? Look, I can recognize that it’s really not that deep, I could just read another book and Just for Practice is simply emulating a popular porn genre so it shouldn't be put under so much scrutiny, and hey, you can go ahead read whatever you want to read, it's cool, but I think it’s important to remember that the things one finds tame only seems so because they might have become desensitized to it. Just saying, we don't live in a country song, the incest thing is most definitely not seen as normal to the general public. And yeah, literally who gives a fuck about all that, but as someone who's occasionally a part of the general public, it’s probably a good thing to keep in mind. "2009 Folgers incest commercial" ass genre. This reminds me of a post on Tumblr (the capitol of oversharing and preaching) that said something like, “people on Tumblr talk about how cannibalism is a trite metaphor for love and is thoroughly overused in media while everybody in real life wants to hurl the second they see two boys kissing” or whatever, and I couldn’t stop thinking of that while reading this. Maybe it's possible keep some things to ourselves, we don’t need to let everybody know every little thing we’re doing! Which is exactly that’s why I’m here writing a very public review for a book about step-brothers step dancing on the D.

There are two wolves inside me; one that knows this is fiction and can Severance my brain into just enjoying the cute romance, and the other that has a visceral reaction to the fact that in real life… this situation would be so wee~eeird! I mean, everybody who picks up Just for Practice knows the deal, Emmett and Kade start practicing on each other and then things get a little too Heated Rivals to deny that it stopped being about the girl a long time ago. It’s a tale as old as time... or well, as old as gay porn has been around, and yet putting it in a literary format and selling it as a narrative is where I found it prudent to take it seriously. I almost wish this book really was just a fuck-fest with no feelings whatsoever involved, because then my brain would be able to categorize it easier than all this musing on the logistics of it all. Imagine a gay How I Met Your Mother retelling where the two dads met because they were raised together as brothers. Would you watch nine seasons of that show!? Wait never mind, that actually sounds funny, let me start over again? Oh! Imagine a gay How I Met Your Mother retelling where the two dads met because they were raised together as brothers... but they’re played by queerbaiting experts Benson Boone and Charlie Puth. Oof and ew. That’d be like eating those bread sandwiches from Bone where it's just two slices of plain bread on each other. Otherwise, I know I painted a haunted picture of my reading journey, but I’m actually chillin' like a villain. I’m just trying to get you in my headspace, you know? Is that important? No, not really, but the mind wanders nonetheless. For example, despite the outlandish plot, it does (unintentionally?) touch on the way a lot of men fashion everything in their lives around the opinion of other men. You know who I’m talking about, those guys who are constantly in the gym working on their six packs, and you know damn well they’re making a beeline to the boys for bragging rights. Women really couldn’t be further from their mind.
And I’m not even trying to talk about those “Manosphere” freaks or some “James Charles only ever going after straight dudes” type shit, but rather how some, if not most, of celebrated works of narrative art focus on the emotional relationships between men. The Iliad, Mean Streets, Heat… Naruto, even if none of them are outwardly queer, it’s easy to see why they're often interpreted as such. It's a simple bridge to build, like Lego! Or how about the song, "The Girl is Mine" by Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney? The titular "girl" who they're fighting over makes no appearance because she's not the focus here! Nah man, it's a love song between MJ and Paul McCartney. I mean, at least until Michael Jackson bought The Beatles' music catalog... that probably put a damper on their friendship. Well, in that case, where the hell's my break-up song!? Anyway, even though reinterpreting these kinds of narratives into a more accepting form of art is a good thing, it’s also important to remember that the reason why these stories were like this in the first place is because more often than not, the authors simply didn't see women as people. Plenty of guys go about their whole lives never seeing women as anything other than a way to improve their status among other men, and it’s important to understand that this doesn’t mean that all of them are secretly queer, but rather just an issue with misogyny. So, what’s my point here? Uh, I don’t know. Just for Pineapple by Jenny Practice just had me thinking of all those men center so much of their personalities around impressing the boys that you have to wonder why they don’t just fuck. Get it on with guys, my guy. In that regard, this book was really funny to me because underneath the tantalizing taboo, at its core, Just for Practice is really just taking that primal question and straight up lays it all out on the table. And trust me, there’s nothing straight about the answer.

Stepbrothers Kade and Emmett are rivals who resent each other- Emmett hates that Kade is irresponsible and lazy, while Kade thinks 'Golden Boy' Emmett is uptight and needs to learn how to relax. Things change when Emmett asks Kade to help him score with a girl he likes at school. Just practice turns into making out, and then something real. This book is filthy but has a perfect HEA. I really liked this one! 😍
Each stroke sends waves of pleasure coursing through me. I strain against the handcuffs, desperate to touch him in return, but the restraints hold firm. “Tell me what you want,” Kade commands, his hand continuing its maddening rhythm. “Tell me what you want your stepbrother to do to you.”

I was looking for a book for a challenge, something on the shorter side and with a title starting with J. I had this one lying around, so I decided to give it a shot. I'm happy I did, it was a pleasant surprise.
I liked that neither of the MCs were panicked about And the author made great use of anticipation several times. I would have liked some more backstory, like how long have they known each other? But it was still a very enjoyable book.
I'm adding this to my gamers, geeks and nerds shelf. It's not a major part of the story, but it's there. Fellow geeks will notice. 🤓

I liked this couple and how they slowly realised that they liked each other. Despite living together they were chalk and cheese and rubbed each other the wrong way - pun intended. What I liked about this book was it also showed that when you love someone the things that irritate you reduce and you try better because you want to be better for your loved one.
I'll say no more about the stupid wager - I will teach you how to have moves, so you can invite someone over for a date. I don't know how it could be done any other way to get them to the point where they're not bickering and spending time without their history being at the forefront, yet I was ambivalent about it.
Kade's teaching was observant and apt; that personalisation when giving comments and indirect touches resonated. Emmett's romantic dinner was everything, so sweet and thoughtful

On checking I only have one for this and it was when they decide to inform their parents. I felt that was very brave, particularly when Kade was viewed as the screw up and Emmett the golden child. This was a fantastic, spicy book by Jenny. I read through these stories rather fast and feel sad when they're over. The chemistry and tension in this story were everything. I loved the dynamics between these two men. This story had some great troupes like: Stepbrothers, Double Bi-Awakening, Golden Boy/Bad Boy, Opposites Attract, and Fake Lessons/Fake Practicing. The spice in this was hot 🔥🔥🔥. And I loved the build-up before the spice 🥵.
This story follows Emmett and Kade. These two are stepbrothers who have some animosity and resentment for each other as one is labeled the golden boy and the other is a looser. Emmett, the golden boy, wants Kade to teach him how to flirt and date as he wants to take Serena out on a date. Kade agrees to give him lessons if he does his chores for a month. The lessons start, and both boys feel a pull toward each other. They're both confused as they're straight. More lessons lead to more confusing feelings. Emmett decides to turn the tables on Kade and show him he knows how to wine and dine, so he plans a fake date for Kade. Things get a bit spicy, and they have their first kiss 🥵. They get distant with each other after, and then Kade helps Em plan his date with Selena. Kade is getting extremely jealous and plans to check in on their date. Will Kade be too late to tell Em how he feels? Did Em take the wrong person on a date?
I loved how opposite these men were. One was the golden boy who did everything right by the rules. He was always in control. Until he submitted that control to Kade. Kade was the bad boy who skated by in life and he felt like a looser and disappointment. He didn't have control until he found it in Emmett. I loved their bickering banter. I loved the power dynamic switch between them 🥵. The chemistry and spice were delicious 🔥🔥🔥. Their first kiss was 🥵🔥. The spark between these two were everything. I loved seeing these two be vulnerable and see each other in a new light. They both made each other stronger and a better version of themselves. I really loved the date Em made for Kade 🥹. The best thing about this story was the lessons between them and the tension 😜. I highly recommend this story!

This was a fantastic, spicy book by Jenny. I read through these stories rather fast and feel sad when they're over. The chemistry and tension in this story were everything. I loved the dynamics between these two men. This story had some great troupes like: Stepbrothers, Double Bi-Awakening, Golden Boy/Bad Boy, Opposites Attract, and Fake Lessons/Fake Practicing. The spice in this was hot 🔥🔥🔥. And I loved the build-up before the spice 🥵.
This story follows Emmett and Kade. These two are stepbrothers who have some animosity and resentment for each other as one is labeled the golden boy and the other is a looser. Emmett, the golden boy, wants Kade to teach him how to flirt and date as he wants to take Serena out on a date. Kade agrees to give him lessons if he does his chores for a month. The lessons start, and both boys feel a pull toward each other. They're both confused as they're straight. More lessons lead to more confusing feelings. Emmett decides to turn the tables on Kade and show him he knows how to wine and dine, so he plans a fake date for Kade. Things get a bit spicy, and they have their first kiss 🥵. They get distant with each other after, and then Kade helps Em plan his date with Selena. Kade is getting extremely jealous and plans to check in on their date. Will Kade be too late to tell Em how he feels? Did Em take the wrong person on a date?
I loved how opposite these men were. One was the golden boy who did everything right by the rules. He was always in control. Until he submitted that control to Kade. Kade was the bad boy who skated by in life and he felt like a looser and disappointment. He didn't have control until he found it in Emmett. I loved their bickering banter. I loved the power dynamic switch between them 🥵. The chemistry and spice were delicious 🔥🔥🔥. Their first kiss was 🥵🔥. The spark between these two were everything. I loved seeing these two be vulnerable and see each other in a new light. They both made each other stronger and a better version of themselves. I really loved the date Em made for Kade 🥹. The best thing about this story was the lessons between them and the tension 😜. I highly recommend this story!

I can't decide if I love the dog more than the boys or if they can all share my love! Their story made me laugh, feel warm and tingly and just feel incredibly happy. Jenny Pineapple does it again, gives us an impossible to put-down novella which packs in everything we could want and does it with confidence and passion.

But what starts out as advice and technique soon leads into these two finding what they were looking for was under underneath the same roof.
I’ve got to say I really enjoyed this read I really liked the banter between Kade and Emmett the attraction and the passion between them is undeniable. I’m also very happy how Mum and Dad react to the news. A great little Read.

Again, I could've spent 200 more pages with Emmett and Kade. Because they were GREAT characters, they had amazing chemistry, and this 99 page book had full development.
I'm slightly obsessed but also--ugh, I need MORE.
The tension was superb. The animosity between these two...it was real. Which made the sexual tension INSANE when they started their little lessons. Lemme tell you, I felt things during the build up.
The whole lead up to the cuffed scene? Kade was like a trapped animal. And the way Emmett owned his wants???

I loved the bi-awakening, enemies-to-lovers, taboo relationship that develops between Emmett and Kade in this story. I loved the guise behind their making moves towards one another and watching them fall deeper was so much fun to read. The only oddity to me was that they never did express their love verbally for one another, just in their actions towards each other. I guess actions, in this case, spoke louder than words did.

I loved this book. It was such a fun, steamy read. I love the premise of one teaching the other, but then attractions flare and practice becomes real. I loved both Emmett and Kade. I enjoyed Kade's lessons and how Emmett reacted to them. Their chemistry sizzled and I always love bi-awakening. 5 stars.

Cute quick read. Emmet and Kade were cute characters who fell for one another during a "teach me" trope. The characters were very likeable and it was a good LGBT+ fiction that made you root for both characters to find happiness.
