Katie Cooper has lived in the sleepy seaside town of Crescent Hill her whole life, but for the past twelve years she has lived under a shroud of guilt and regret. You see, back at school, Katie and her friends played a prank on classmate Scott Martin...a prank that went horribly wrong.
Now, over a decade later, Scott has returned to Crescent Hill, and Katie sees this as a chance to put things right. To apologize. But bodies start turning up, victims of a serial killer with a flair for the theatrical, and dubbed by the media as ‘The Doctor.’ And her friends start to point the finger at Scott.
Detective Paula Gibbs is assigned the case, and is on the hunt to catch the killer. She knows she must act quickly to stop Katie, or anyone else, from being next on The Doctor's appointment list.
A fun and fast-paced slasher story set in a small English seaside town.
It's got three-dimensional characters. It's got multiple POV's, and it's got a PLAGUE DOCTOR!!! 😱😱
Someone is stalking the streets of Crescent Hill, and they're targeting Katie and her friends. When a blast from their past shows up, fingers start pointing. But do they need to look closer to home? Paula, a fatigued detective, thought she left serial killers in her past, but now that past is back to haunt her. Nobody is safe while The Doctor is in town.
I really loved this one! There aren't enough plague doctors in horror, so this scratched an itch for me. There are some issues with jumping tenses within the narrative, but overall it didn't affect my enjoyment of the story. If slasher and/or police procedural horror thrillers are your thing, this is the book for you.
I was instantly drawn to this book by the gorgeous, but slightly creepy looking front cover image.
I think we've all, at some point in life, taken a photo of a jetty like this ....well, I know I have - but this definitely had a darker and more ominous edge to it.
This had me gripped pretty much from the first few pages and honestly, this had everything I love in a thriller read.
The atmosphere was set straight away and I love the idea that the things that we've done as children, can come back to haunt you!
I'd certainly not be quite as confident as our main character here - although I'd more likely be on the other side given my terrible school years!? ( Not really!)
The characters were all very believable and I liked the multi pov chapters which allowed us to really get to know them well.
I never knew who to trust and whether I should be feeling sorry for them or not at times.
I liked that we were fed clues throughout and there was no shortage of suspects along the way.
I came up with many theories as I read but as ever, I didn't work things out until the end and my thoughts were ever changing.
I loved the writing style which set a great atmosphere and built the tension up all the way to the end.
This, with the fast pacing had me racing through the pages and desperate to know how this would all play out and whether Detective Gibbs would be able to solve the case in time.
A great first read for me from this author and I'd be keen to read more from them soon.
Here is my review for The Doctor Will See You Now by Tom Carter
I thoroughly enjoyed this creepy thriller where the plague doctor is claiming victims with a grisly ending. Katie Cooper has lived her entire life in the quiet and sleepy seaside town of Crescent Hill. Although, when she and her friends were at school, they played a prank on classmate Scott Martin but it went terribly wrong. Katie has been living with guilt for the past twelve years but now Scott is back and she wants to put things right. Her friends don't trust him to be alone with her. Then their old teacher, Richard Taylor, is killed at home and left in a grisly mess with blood everywhere. ‘The Doctor’ is dressed like the plague doctors Scott once tried to talk about. With a long white beak for a nose. Katie's friends pointed the finger at Scott. DS Paula Gibbs is given the case, her first major one. She must act quickly to stop anyone else getting hurt.
I absolutely loved this horror thriller which was right up my street. I loved the attention to detail and that everything was described in great detail. I really liked Katie's character and DS Paula Gibbs was terrific as well. I love good horror and this was a fantastic serial killer thriller. Tom Carter is becoming an auto read author for me as I love his books so much.

A-Tishoo, A-Tishoo... You'll all fall down.

Fans of “The Whisper Man” by Alex North and “Chasing the Boogeyman” by Richard Chizmar will enjoy “The Doctor Will See You Now.”
The Doctor Will See You Now by Tom Carter… honestly, where do I even begin?! If you’re looking for a fast-paced, unhinged slasher that serves rich three-dimensional characters, multiple POVs, and an actual plague doctor killer, you have officially arrived at the right place.
You all know my golden rule by now: I ABSOLUTELY, UNEQUIVOCALLY do not do thriller spoilers in any capacity. It ruins the entire fun! But here is the setup: a man is brutally murdered by a serial killer sporting a full-on plague doctor mask, bringing Detective Paula Gibbs onto the case. But wait—enter Katie Cooper, her bully past and cue the immediate tension, unresolved trauma, and pure page-turning chaos!
There’s even a cheeky nod to Clarice Starling in here (which… IYKYK) that had me grinning. The creep factor, the endless web of suspects and alibis, the sheer necessity to confront past sins—it was an absolute mind game. I was constantly changing my mind about who was pulling the strings.
What truly elevates this above your run-of-the-mill slasher is Tom’s writing. Every single character is carefully crafted, deeply human, and flawed. Huge shoutout to the amazing book community for bringing this onto my radar—if I had missed Tom’s work, it would’ve been a total tragedy (and yes, now I’m forced to binge his entire back catalog, duh).
If you’re a fan of Alex North or Chris Carter, Tom Carter needs to be on your radar immediately.
A serial killer is in town, everyone is hiding something, and the clock is ticking… The Doctor Will See You Now... 🩺🔪
Massive thanks to Tom Carter for sending over an ARC! My nervous system may never recover, and I will officially be looking over my shoulder every single time I walk into a doctor's office. 👀
A creepy serial killer thriller with an interesting cast of characters, set in an atmospheric small town.
Katie lives under a cloud of guilt brought on by a bullying incident that occurred years earlier during high school. Her friend group targeted a boy named Scott, making his life a nightmare. When Scott resurfaces in town, she jumps on the opportunity to apologize for her behavior. Her friends aren’t on the same page, and they’re quick to blame Scott for brutal murders that occur around the time of his return.
After the trauma of working a serial killer case, Detective Paula Gibbs moves to town, seeking a quieter caseload, only to find herself heading multiple murder cases. She investigates Katie, Scott, and her group of friends, struggling to assemble puzzle pieces that don’t align.
The multiple POV characters are distinctive, melding events in the past and present, painting a dark, unsettling picture. Katie, Scott, and Paula all have intricate, well-developed backstories that account for who they are in the present. The secondary characters also play a vital role in how events unfold.
The plotting is engrossing, including the gruesome signature of the killer that demonstrates how meticulous and disturbed they are. I also enjoyed Paula’s investigative process, the roadblocks she encounters, and her determination to solve the cases. This story oozes tension from start to finish, with a killer on the loose posing an ever-present danger to Katie and her friends. I loved how the story came together, especially the ending.
I highly recommend this book for fans of J.D. Barker’s 4MK series or Alex North’s The Whisper Man.
✨ THE DOCTOR WILL SEE YOU NOW REVIEW ✨ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
As a romance reader I do enjoy a dabble to other genres, like thrillers and horrors but it’s been a while since I’ve read any. I have a fair few thrillers and horrors that have been sat on my shelf for a while, all unread. But after reading Tom’s work, it’s made me want to dive into the genre more.
Tom’s writing is so engaging and the story moves at such a great pace. How he writes makes you feel for the characters and you’re invested in everyone that’s mentioned, even the characters you love to hate! It’s also easy to visualise and get truly lost in the story because Tom’s writing is so immersive.
I loved Katie’s character and despite this being a thriller/horror I Lol’d at her sass, she was brilliant and Detective Paula Gibbs was such a great character too! It did make me realise though that I would be a terrible detective because I didn’t have a clue… 🙈😂
I am on countdown for this book to release so I can re-read ☺️ and I’m on countdown for when Tom releases another book!!
This is my third book by Tom and won’t be the last 🙌🏼
Highly recommend if you enjoy fast-paced horror, serial killer thrillers, and stories that leave you wanting to sleep with the light on. 👀👀
I loved that I could really see this being a horror film; the gore, the suspense and the creepy villain! That ending as well, total movie vibes.
Great to have part of the story across two timelines, one from present day and one from 12 years ago. Built the story up well so you understood about the friendships and history from their school days.
The characters were all well written, and definitely evoked different emotions from me!! Paula had to be my favourite and I’m glad there’s more book to come with her as I enjoyed her being the lead detective.
I liked the Plague Doctor history in the book, having known of the mask but not knowing all the details it made for interesting reading.
If you’re a lover of horror like I am (30 years plus of watching and reading) you may well guess some of what happens in the book. If you’re paying attention there are certainly some clues. Although I did guess the outcome it in no way hindered the book for me. I still found it intense, I enjoyed the gory descriptions (I am a slasher girl at heart) and I couldn’t read quick enough because I had to know what was happening next!
Thank you Tom for the ARC and I can’t wait to see what Paula is up against next!
Are you a fan of Alex North's The Whisper Man, or The Chalk Man by CJ Tudor? If so, this book will be right up your street. A man is brutally murdered by a killer dressed up as a plague doctor. The police, headed by Detective Paula Gibbs, work to find the killer. However, they're not quick enough, and the killer strikes again. And again. Katie Cooper works in the local cafe. When a mysterious figure from her past, somebody Katie and her friends ruthlessly bullied when they were teenagers, returns to town, Katie finds herself embroiled in a murder mystery. This book kept me guessing until the very last page. I would highly recommend it to anybody who loves a fast-paced thriller, with a side of horror.
A fast-paced thriller, which kept me turning page after page. I loved everything about this, and it made my serial k!ller mad little heart so happy that it was so well written. I loved the nod to Clarice from Silence of The Lambs, too! It was actually quite tense in parts, and I LOVED the school scene. It was so creepy and was definitely my favourite bit! I really liked the fact that the serial killer was a plague doctor. I think the image of the plague doctor is so cool and makes my morbid little mind happy. I knew Scott wasn't innocent, but I knew there was something about Joe, too. I love that they were combined as one 'team', so to speak. It was my first read by Tom, but it's certainly not my last!

I really enjoyed this book. Katie is forced to confront the consequences of a prank from her school days as the mysterious killer known as "The Doctor" begins targeting people connected to her past. The tension keeps building as another of her friends dies and everyone becomes a suspect, especially Scott, who was the target of the prank and has returned to town after so many years. But with an alibi for the murders, could he really be guilty? I found myself constantly changing my mind about who was behind it all, and every new revelation sent the story in a different direction. The characters were easy to invest in, the pacing was excellent, and the ending genuinely caught me by surprise. A thoroughly entertaining thriller.
This isn’t your ordinary slasher story. The writing is exceptional and every character is beautifully painted. Think of it like if Thomas Harris had written Scream and you’ll start to get the picture.
I read the first chapter before going to sleep and had to get up to check the doors. Creepy mood set up perfectly right from the get go.
I really hope this becomes a series. Paula is a brilliant detective character and I’d love to see more from her. The plague doctor and their scenes were spectacular. A great concept fantastically executed.
Tom Carter is an auto buy author for me. If you’re a fan of Alex North or Chris Carter then definitely give this a read. You won’t be disappointed!
I absolutely loved this, it was so gripping and it had me completely invested right from the start.
I really liked Katie, she was such a great character. I really felt for her. I also really liked the Detective, Paula. I do hope we get to see more from her, I’d love a series.
The quiet seaside town was a perfect setting for this too, it just added to the creepy atmosphere. With characters I didn’t know who to trust this one kept me guessing until the end.
I’ve read Tom’s books before and I can’t wait to see what’s next. His writing style is so good, it just draws you in and it kept me engaged throughout.
I highly recommend this one if you love thrillers that are fast paced with a slice of horror.
Katie is a good person with a questionable friendship group. They're close friends but something's a little odd in the group. As kids they did something terrible and Katie seems the only one that is still haunted by it.
Murders start happening and it's up to the police to work things out but it's not straightforward and we have to look about the past before deciding on who the culprit could be. The obvious choice is too obvious but the motives seem linked so who's hiding in the shadows?
The plague doctor mask is an interesting cover and the link between past and present is explained. It's an interesting, suspenseful slow-burn story. I liked the detective and feel like she'd be a good character to follow.
Years ago a group of friends played a prank on the 'weird' kid in school (Scott) that went too far. Now years later, they have grown up Katie still carries the guilt for the part she played. Then Scott returns..just as a serial killer starts picking people off in the seaside town. He claims to be over it but is he? Or is it someone else trying to frame him?
I loved this. A creepy Plague Doctor as the killer was brilliant and the creepy wee tune 👌 I kept thinking i had it figured but not quite! I liked Katie as a character, her friends not so much. The teacher really deserved what he got! This is the first book I've read by the author but I'm quite excited to read more. It really drew me in. Fantastic horror
I could not put this book down and needed to get to the end to know what had happened. Paula Gibbs is such a great character and someone you can really warm to.
The plot was fast paced, throwing you in to the deep in from the first chapter, which had me gripped from the very first page.
I hope this character is developed further so we can read more about Paula and really delve into her background more. Tom Carter is now up an author I will be keeping a very close eye on, cannot wait to read more of his books.
I really enjoyed this one, it was a great slasher read. Perfect for this time of year. I enjoyed the flashback chapters to 12 years ago, always love that in books. I thought the characters were well written. And I enjoyed the writing style. I found it to be a mixed paced read, some parts were fast paced where as other parts were slower. The chapter lengths were varied, and at some were a tad long in my opinion, but that's because I prefer shorter chapters. I did guess how it was going to turn out but that didn't take anything away from the book.
👏😊 This was so good! I was gripped from the first page and literally did not put it down till I’d finished. I love a thrilling read and this was certainly that, such a good plot and well written, the tension and suspense kept building plus I had not idea how things were going to pan out. Detective Gibbs was a strong lead and I’m really hoping this is the start of a series I’d love to read more with this character. My third read from this author and I’ve loved each one, such a great atmospheric read, a great slasher story.
This was my second five star worthy read from Carter. Yet again his writing grabbed me in a chokehold not releasing me until I'd turned the very last page.
Pacing flowed at a non-stop momentum, and the combination of police procedural meets slasher opened up the atmosphere, stakes were heightened and tensions taut.
Told from multiple POV, it was replete with a cast of unreliable narrators, their unresolved traumas, and a whole load of second guessing from me.
I can't wait to read more from Carter in the future.
What a brilliant read! Goosebumps and chills galore. I love a thriller and this hit the spot with some gruesome detailing too. There were enough twists for me and it kept me wanting to turn the page. I liked the description and writing style of Tom's writing as this was his first book I have read. I will be delving into more, that's for sure! Thank you for a great read and happy reading to those who will be picking it up! Perhaps read it with the light on and curtains closed 🤣
The Dr Will See You Now by Tom Carter. I did enjoy this book. I loved the cover and blurb of this book. This is the 3rd book I've read by this author. I read this in 2 sittings. I couldn't put it down. I loved the writing style and the story. This was twisty. I kept changing my mind on who it was. This would've been one sitting but I had to get up early so I had to put it down. This is a must read. I definitely recommend this book.
Absolutely fantastic story from Tom Carter. A tale of the murderous victorian Doctor that not only in the book is scary, but to come across one in real life would scare me to death before he could try to kill me. Written very well and you truly connect with the characters. I did not see that twist coming!!! A fabulous Who Done It horror!
Omg that end!!!! Ahhhhhh!!!! What a fantastically gripping story. My first read from Tom Carter but certainly not the last. I loved everything about this book. The characters, the pace, the execution and finding out who done it!!! Everyone needs to read this book!
An excellent love story to 80s slasher movies and books which is expertly done. The story is really well paced with some genuinely tense moments. The plague doctor character is very very well chosen! I had a lot of fun with this one
This book will grab you from the first page and not let go until the last page. The author switches from past to present in a smooth way. The mystery and suspense will keep you engaged and guessing! Its not who you think it is.
Wow what an amazing read my first read by Tom Carter and definitely won’t be my last And that end wow a fast past slasher had me gripped from the start
A serial killer is in town… but who is the killer?
This was a thriller with a good dose of horror mixed in, and although I don’t usually read horror, I actually really enjoyed it! It gave me major Scream vibes in book form.
Some parts dragged a little for me, but it was definitely worth pushing through to get to that ending!
Thank you Tom Carter for allowing me to read this advanced reader copy for an honest review.
