NES Endings Compendium, Volume 2: 1990

Rate this book
The quest to assess every NES ending continues! In this volume, the new NES game cartridges of 1990 have their conclusions chronicled. What's the final boss fight like? What happens after the player achieves victory? Is there a grandiose final cutscene to reward their hard work, or does the game end with a boring nothingburger like a basic "Congratulations" message on a black screen? Some endings are iconic. Others are bland beyond belief! The Compendium collects them all.

I'm not sure I've ever actually beaten an NES game, despite growing up in that era. I was a Sega kid. So, while I played a fair number of Nintendo games at friends' houses, I don't think we ever got to the end of any of them together. For me, in a way, this book and its predecessor are a glimpse into an alternate reality, where I wasn't the odd one out, and I would have actually finished some of these games. It's weird to be nostalgic for something you never directly experienced, but the NES Endings Compendium series continues to provide that somehow, with plenty of details and screenshots of the games in question. Heck, there's even a section in the back for cheat codes!

If you're an '80s or '90s kid, and you want a trip down memory lane, there's a lot to love here.
