A mage in hiding. Five men she can't have. A secret she'll die to protect.
My name is Isabel Gallagher, and I have a secret. I can see ghosts. If anyone discovers my ability, everyone I care about will be killed.
To keep my secret, I have to pretend to be magicless. Since mages value power above all else, I'm the town of Hawthorne Grove's favorite punching bag. I only have a year left here. Then, I can move away to a normal human town and forget that other mages exist.
My five-year plan of staying alive and remaining undetected is on track. Until one night at the gym, I met them.
A pushy alpha wolf, his easygoing younger brother, and their quiet, broody friend. Throw in my too-handsome-for-his-own-good best friend and my mysterious combat teacher, and I'm up to my eyeballs in men who make me wish things could be different.
But they can't be.
While I'm trying to guard my heart against the men who feel like the missing parts of my soul, young mages all over New England are disappearing. When no one's willing to investigate, I know I have to. But the truths I expose and the betrayals I uncover threaten everything I've spent the last fourteen years trying to protect.
E. L. Finley is a Midwestern author of paranormal and why choose romance. As an avid reader, E. L. Finley writes about the sassy heroines, devoted heroes, and magical shenanigans she'd like to read about. She focuses on creating characters that pull you in and crafting worlds that you never want to leave. When she isn't writing or reading, you can find E.L. Finley baking anything with chocolate, bungling home improvement projects, or binging spy shows.
Goodreads really needs to implement a DNF (Did Not Finish) button - or better yet, a zero-star rating option - because Veiled Spirits by E.L. Finley deserves both.
I gave this book two chances. When I couldn’t get through the ebook, I turned to the audiobook, hoping that the narrators might salvage the experience. Troy Duran, usually a reliable talent with a near-perfect track record of elevating bad material, couldn't save this one. Even he sounded like he was struggling to bring life to this disaster of a story.
Ash Kinsley’s narration didn’t help either. In fact, it made things worse. The inconsistent accents were grating, and I found myself cringing more often than not. If you're going to voice a male main character (MMC), please take some notes from the Queens that are anime voice actors - they know how to do it right. Unfortunately, I’ll be avoiding any future audiobooks featuring this narrator.
As for the story itself? A complete mess. Reverse harem stories with a large cast can be done well, but this wasn’t one of them. The FMC (female main character) was supposedly "badass" - yet she spent more time crying and flip-flopping on her feelings than doing anything remotely empowering. One moment she’s pushing her mates away, the next she’s snuggling in their shirts. Pick a lane.
The MMCs were introduced poorly, the plot was chaotic, and the writing felt underdeveloped. Nothing landed. The only thing this book delivered consistently was disappointment.
