Lovers Through The Looking Glass

Do you ever just yearn? For love? For belonging?

The only place Braxton feels at home is beneath the bright orange leaves of the Amber Forest. The one place her mother forbids her from going. Evil Fey haunt that forest. Her mother spouts her superstitions no less than thirteen times a year. Braxton pays that no mind, the forest is her happy place, and finding her father hanging from a tree doesn't change that. But when Braxton falls into a fox’s den and the lines between dream and reality blur beyond recognition, she begins to wonder if her mother was right.

Perfect for fans of Alice In Wonderland and unreliable narrators.

"I hold my hopes and dreams as an author in the bags under my eyes."

KJ Bradford is a creator of worlds, living in Kentucky with her husband, daughter, and zoo of pets. She loves reading, cats, flowers, anime, and writing, but maybe not in that order. She’s an awkward little dragon who either holes up in her writing cave or talks about her current obsession to anyone who will listen, with no in-between. Multiple stories are playing out in her head at all times and writing has become her solace as well as her entire personality. Her writing can be described as dark and swoony, gritty and fantastical. When she’s not writing or reading, she’s taking care of her amazing family while thinking about writing.

Sly Foxes and Silly Girls

Ok so the author warns you going in that this trip down the foxes hole will be utterly confusing. It was and it wasn’t. It’s clear that Braxton is losing time and having her memory messed with but it’s hard to tell the why. Is it magic, is it grief, is it a curse? Now while it becomes more clear why she’s losing time nothing else really does. And while by design I don’t think this is a story most readers will like or complete unless they are invested in whatever happens whenever the full story comes out. I love the trippiness of a Wonderland/Underland setup so I was happy to be spun along for the ride. And while I definitely recommend it because I love the authors writing style this isn’t for the average reader and definitely not ones who mind cliffhangers or aren’t big on romantasy. I have a feeling that Bradford is going to be one of my favorite authors.

I am absolutely speechless. I devoured this in a day even around my kiddos because I just kept wanting to come back to figure out what was happening with Braxton. I feel like I can't even start this review right because there's so much hitting at the same time. The prose? Lyrical, whimsical, bypassing your eyes and sticking right inside your ribs. The playing with chronology and perspective? Keeps you on your toes and moving through the story like a dance. The characters? In novellas I never expect much depth of character, but with even the shortest of glimpses I feel like I got a handle on so many people- Mel, Reggie, Dmitri, her mom, Koen.... being able to make each character memorable even in such a short space of time is truly a gift. My only complain is that this is definately not enough of this world for me. Bradford has herself a lifelong fan.

Despite the fact that I have an ARC list a mile long, a book to beta read, a stack of physical books AND an annual reading challenge to complete, I saw a post on Threads the other day and impulse bought the ebook copy of Lovers Through the Looking Glass. The author promised an unreliable narrator, an alt Black girl losing her grip on reality, Alice in Wonderland vibes, and more.

This 80-page novellette delivered.

The pacing and storytelling are deliberately confusing, the vibes alternating between ethereal beauty, small town drama, and strange cloaked horror.

Our main character, Braxton, is a young woman who has been warned countless times about journeying into the Amber Forest nearby after her father’s death. As these things usually go, she is inevitably called to it anyway and what follows is a very haunting story of star crossed lovers, a lonely witch’s curse, and a small town where nothing is quite… Right.

I became invested in the story quickly, trying to piece together a timeline, Braxton’s relationships, her trauma, and where the fairytale element fit Braxton’s story.

I think the author leaves a lot open to interpretation, and I am scared to say too much and spoil this book.

But if you like Riverdale, Alice in Wonderland, Black stories, and fairytales with a chilling undertone, I recommend checking out Lovers Through The Looking Glass.

I liked the sudden changes in Braxton's environment and how confused she was about the fox and her feelings. She is one of the outsiders in the small town of Reynard and it's interesting to see the difference in her life there versus the other place! I was so

This was short, sweet, and fun and I can't wait to see what happens next.

After reading another novella from this author I wanted more. This was absolutely nothing like it tho 😂 I am so happy I read the forethought that told me I was about to go down a spiral for a trippy ride because that is exactly what this was. I honestly can’t tell you what I read. It was so much going on and I just wanted It all to make sense but nothing makes sense but it does and it doesn’t. I just have so many questions that I hope get answered in an up coming series. This was a quick read and kept me on my toes to trying to process and match up characterized. Honestly I feel like I should read Alice & wonderland now to see if the writing style is similar because I’ve never reead anything like this.

What did I just read?!!! The flow of each chapter was so unique, making it impossible to put down.
The writing was amazing, and I loved the nod to Alice In Wonderland. I’ll definitely be reading more by this author 🥰
