I don’t normally write negative reviews but I feel really compelled to provide a warning to this because this book stunned me. In a bad way.
There should be trigger warnings on this book, or better, for what is otherwise a very simple run of the mill sports romance, maybe the author might want to reconsider the line between spicy and downright wrong.
These characters first sexual encounter is essentially both of them being sexually assaulted by each other. First Maddix wakes Cruz up with non-consensual activity which he tries to stop. Then in his POV he admits she’s very drunk and he is completely sober so he shouldn’t have sex with her…then continues to have sex with her.
Naturally she wakes up not remembering and wondering why she is naked and has an ache between her thighs…but don’t worry, it’s a delicious ache and oh, now she’s starting to remember so we can forgive the whole mess.
The first book in this series was the first I ever read of this author and I found the jumpiness of the writing jarring but wasn’t massively offended by anything, so decided to give book 2 a try. But man, it’s all so hot and cold, like there was nothing, no talk of hooking up, then the next chapter starts and he wakes up to her on top of him.
Look, I’ve read some messed up books knowingly, all with proper trigger warnings, and I can suspend reality and stomach almost anything like the best of them. But I can’t forgive what is marketed as a sweet and spicy sports romance for just glossing over sexual assault like that. I honestly can’t believe the author thought this was a good idea and that the editor wasn’t like uh hello, are we sure we want to start this HEA off with non-con? Cool cool cool.
I’m wondering if I read the same book as all these mysterious 5-star arc readers.
Yikes, just a bad, bad look.
