Sign of the Cross: A Novel

Rate this book
In prison for his resistance activities in World War II France, Marcel Boussant longs for freedom and Isabelle Karmazin, the woman he loves. Meanwhile, Isabelle is denied entry to America. When she meets Michael Dreyfus, a Swiss Jew, she readily agrees to his dangerous scheme . . . to whisk her off to U.S. controlled territory in North Africa. What she dared not hope for, however, is that Marcel would one day return for her. Historically accurate, this rousing adventure/romance tale demonstrates that true refuge is found only in Christ.

a historical fiction romance that is set in world war II. it says it is a sequel, but it can also be read as a stand alone. I read this book to fulfill the goal- a book I started but never finished. (technically, I had read it once before. I started rereading in about 6 months ago, and kept setting it aside for other more interesting books.)

Marcel, unable to cross the Swiss border, lands in a terrible prison, and is tortured for information. He finally gives away some information about a dead man, which he doesn’t think will hurt anything or anyone.

Isabelle, meanwhile, is living in Switzerland with new friends, Justine and her husband. She wonders what happened to Marcel, but goes on with her life. Isabelle is afraid that Switzerland won’t be a safe place to raise her child, and longs to go to America. Getting there will be harder than she thought. . . .

Marcel is rescued from prison and hides. Three Jewish children find themselves hiding with Marcel in a French home.

As Marcel’s friend helps the children and Marcel get away to Switzerland, they are chased by the evil inspector thought dead.

When Marcel reaches Switzerland, he meets Isabelle’s new friend, Michael. Michael, though a very nice man, is in love with Isabelle, which makes things hard for everyone.

The excitement doesn’t stop there. . . .
