Deck the Hores: An opposites attract, elopement romance

Rate this book
Sometimes you’ve just gotta embrace your inner Hore.

Stepping in a giant pile of cow crap doesn’t usually change the trajectory of one's life but for Nancy Walker, that’s exactly what happened.

Karl Hore thought he had life all figured out. He got his business degree and he was prepared to take over the family farm when his dad decided to retire. One day he’d probably get married and have a few kids of his own.

One day comes faster than either of them anticipated and what started as some harmless flirting sprinkled with marriage proposals turned into a trip down the aisle.

Marrying Karl was a way for Nancy to escape the clutches of a world that had become suffocating, an act of glorious rebellion. For Karl, marrying Nancy was the only thing that made sense, even if he couldn’t explain why.

Whether you met them as the meddling neighbors and doting parents or you’re just meeting them, it's time to discover how Karl and Nancy became the Hores.

Megan McSpadden dreads talking about herself almost as much as seeing a snake on a hike. But she knows we all must do scary things so here it goes.

Megan lives in Hamilton, Ontario with her husband, two dogs, two cats and unruly garden. When not writing she can usually be found photographing families (don’t worry they pay her to do it), yelling at her beloved Toronto Maple Leafs, dreaming of travelling somewhere else or cooking something her husband will ask her to make again but knows she won’t because Megan doesn’t do recipes.

Megan enjoys writing romance that will make you laugh one minute only to cry the next. Don’t ask why because she doesn’t know.

4🌟, 2 🌶️

Deck the Hores is a nostalgic, laugh-out-loud origin story that brings Karl and Nancy Hore to life with heart and humor.

Set in Ontario, the story flows effortlessly between perspectives, blending emotion and wit in a way that makes you feel like part of the Hore family.

Even if "insta love" isn't your usual trope, Megan's storytelling makes it work beautifully. With perfect callbacks to earlier books, charming chapter art, and a playlist you'll want on repeat, this book is a cozy, feel-good ride-and Karl? A total green flag dreamboat.

This is such an easy 5 star rating.

As a Canadian, I deeply appreciated all the Canadian details. The instalove was handled so well in this book. The slice was perfectly placed. I loved it! Simply loved it!

Guys, you know I love me some Hores.
I was most fortunate to read an ARC of Deck The Hores awhile back, and I'm excited that it's finally nearing publication day.
Simply put, author Megan McSpadden put the loveliest holiday bow on her Right Place, Right Time series.
We met Karl and Nancy Hore in her first book, An Unexpected Path. I loved them from the first mention - the ultimate "invested" neighbours with a wonderful partnership.
(If you haven't read An Unexpected Path, stop right now and go read it. And also read Years In The Making, and The ABCs Of You And Me. Then come back to this.)
Deck The Hores is the prequel novella of Nancy and Karl's pairing. Meg has done a wonderful job at bringing these characters to life - we knew we already loved them, but now we have even more of the why.
There's so much awesome here:
- the 90s! (Bless.)
- Canadiana.
- spice and banter.
- instalove (trust me, naysayers - the Hores are goals with this).
Also for release on Oct. 28 is the short story, The ABCs of Vows and Babies - the continuing story of Sophie and Foster! It will be featured in the Canadian edition hardcover of Deck The Hores.
Pre-ordering for Deck The Hores is open now on Kindle - absolutely recommended. For release on Oct. 28.

I don’t think Megan could write anything that I wouldn’t absolutely fall in love with. The Hores are characters I could happily spend time with. Karl is every woman’s dream, and Nancy is one lucky lady. The love-at-first-sight moment, the opposites-attract dynamic, and all the ’90s references just made me enjoy it more and more.

Megan is now in my top 5 authors - pick up anything she writes and I bet you’ll devour and love it!

Deck the Hores: An opposites attract, elopement romance (Right Place, Right Time Book 4) by Megan McSpadden

If you're looking for a book that will tug at your heartstrings while leaving you in stitches, then "Deck the Hores" by Megan McSpadden is a must-read! From the very first page, I found myself drawn into the world of the Hore family—a captivating group of characters that truly come to life. This story is an incredible blend of humor and emotion, effortlessly weaving moments that will have you laughing one moment and wiping away tears the next.

Megan's vivid descriptions of the setting made me feel like I was right there alongside the characters, experiencing all their ups and downs. I was not just a reader; I was part of the story. Although this book stands on its own, I highly recommend starting with the first installment of the series. You won’t feel lost for a second, but I promise that being immersed in the characters' journeys from the beginning will make your experience even richer.

If you want a book that offers warmth, laughter, and a touch of heartbreak, pick up "Deck the Hores." You won't be disappointed.

This book was just what I needed. Karl and Nancy are perfection!

I am not usually one for an insta love story but this worked. Every aspect of this relationship clicked, and it was BELIEVABLE!! I could feel the love between these two characters.

I also have to mention that I absolutely ADORE Karl's family! They reminded me so much of my own.

As with all of Megan's books, get ready for laughter! I was reading at night beside my sleeping husband and had to muffle my laughter several times.

While each of Megan's books can be read as standalones, I encourage you to start from the very beginning and make your way through. Trust me when I say you need to experience each of these characters, they are something very special. Plus! You're going to meet Karl and Nancy in book one, An Unexpected Path.

I am so excited for everyone to read this in October! I can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy.

Deck the Hores by Megan McSpadden is the absolutely hilarious holiday story of Nancy and Karl.

The two meet at The Royal Winter Fair, when Nancy steps in cow shit from a cow that Karl is showing off. Once they meet their relationship moves quickly and had me guessing what was going to happen for the second half of the book.

The entire book is hilarious and self-away of how odd and fast paced it is in the best way. Not going to lie, I was totally drawn into this book by the hilarious title, but flew through reading it and it did not disappoint!

Thank you Megan for the arc and for writing this absolutely hilarious book!

Karl and Nancy were first introduced to us in An Unexpected Path and it was wonderful to be able to now read their origin story and learn more about their special relationship. They met in the 1990s and it was fun to read about that time period with some Canadianisms thrown in. Their insta-love was entertaining and I enjoyed all the humour throughout the book. Karl’s family is absolutely lovely and a great component of the book. Overall another well written book by this author!! Her books can be read as standalones but it was nice to read them in the order they were written.

4.5⭐️ This sweet insta-love story took me by surprise. With main characters sweet enough to make you melt and banter for days, Karl and Nancy’s story was one I couldn’t put down. I also thoroughly enjoyed all the Canadian elements that were included in this book. From a Country Fair, to Niagra Falls and poutine, it made this small town Canadian girl so happy! I also completely fell in love with how the author writes her characters and you best believe that I will go back and read her other books.

This book had me laughing, swooning, sweating and crying. Not at the same time, thank goodness, but honestly, Megan puts you through all of the emotions and kept me rooting for Karl and Nancy the entire time.
After meeting the main characters in An Unexpected Path and seeing them again in ABC's, it was so wonderful to finally see where they began and how they got to be the loveable neighbours and parents we know them as.
Yet another home run from Megan!

I think I’ve said this before, but I would read Megan’s grocery list if I had the chance.
She weaves words into the most heart warming stories and this one just might be my favourite! It made me want to go back to An Unexpected Path and meet the Hores for the first time all over again.
A perfect Christmas origin story, start here or start with An Unexpected Path and work your way through Megan’s amazing stories! Either way, you won’t regret it!

This book is absolute perfection! Karl & Nancy forever! 😭💙🙌🏽

Megan McSpadden has done it once again! HOW is it that I have high expectations and she STILL surpasses them?!

Nancy and Karl’s love story is absolute perfection. This book is cozy, heartwrenching, emotional, sexy, and a truly unique love story unlike anything I’ve ever read! It is a big warm hug and a salve for my soul that I didn’t even know I needed.

I don’t typically love insta-love stories but Karl and Nancy made it feel so real and genuine. This meet cute is truly one for the books and had me hooked immediately. It is such a special treat to finally see the beginning love story of my favorite neighbors and parents from her other books in this series!

Karl is the perfect green flag husband: kind, caring, thoughtful, hilarious, attentive, empathetic, loving (and he falls first, of course!) I also love his family so much. The Hores are the best people!

Nancy is so brave to step completely out of her comfort zone and break away from everything she’s ever known to spontaneously pursue her true happiness with someone she just met. Such a strong, brave, likeable FMC!

Their banter is so hilarious and perfect - I was kicking my feet giggling the whole time! And the elopement is so imperfectly perfect for them. I especially love the dynamic of them coming together as a couple so that they face challenges as a “we” and tackle things as a team.

This book is a stand alone but is also #4 in the ‘Right Place, Right Time’ series and has really fun connections to the other books! The Easter egg references to the other books are just the best (especially the sneak peek of Sophie and Foster, and meeting baby Bennett). I highly recommend reading all of them in whatever order you choose! They are all so so wonderful!

This read has far exceeded my expectations and I could not recommend it more highly! INFINITY STARS!!! It is officially out now, go read it right now and thank me later!

ARC REVIEW

"Deck The Hores"

(Right Place, Right Time Book # 4)

by Megan McSpadden

I was smiling in the second paragraph. And there and then I thought to myself: oh, this is gonna be good.

And it was way better than just good. This was so good. So good? Who am I fooling? This was absolutely-amazingly-delicious-funny-loveable-way-out-of-the-charts-good. Yes, that's how good it was, you know.

It took my breath away by the end of chapter 3. And I knew that was it for me. Chapter 3 and it was already one of my favorite books.

This book is one of the most beautiful love stories I have ever read. Ever. E-v-e-r.

Oh, and it has spice, just the kind of that has you 🤭

5 stars is so unfair to show the amount of Love I have for this story.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. For me it was an anticipated 🎅🏻 present.

And thank you to Hayling Bookstorm, who always have the best authors with them. You are very much appreciated.

---

some my favorite quotes:

Dark blue eyes meet mine. They're nice and all, but it's his smile that has butterflies racing to my stomach.

I want to talk to her. I want to start and never stop. Hell, she could recite the alphabet on repeat, and I doubt I'd get sick of it.

She laughs again, and it's the most useful I've felt all day.

Yes, I think. I will do whatever you want if it means I get even a second longer with you.

"Nancy?" he whispers.
"Yeah?" I whisper back.
"I really want to kiss you."
"Okay."
He leans in slowly, his lips meeting mine with a kiss so soft it feels like a secret.

"I should go"
"You should"
"Do you want me to go?"
"I've proposed twelve times tonight. What do you think?"
"Ask me again"

"I have hope, Nancy"
"Teach me."
"Hope? I'm not sure I can teach it quickly. Probably going to take years of tutelage."

"Tomorrow I'll let you do whatever you want me or not do to me."

Nancy has been my future since the first day I saw her. "Three days ago," I mumble.

"You're an all-you-can-eat buffet, and I'm the only patron for the rest of time."

She's Christmas morning, and I'm desperate to open my gifts.

Deck The Hores, @authormeganmcspadden
Out Now!

Deck The Hores is one of the most perfectly delightful instant love yet somehow completely relatable, romance novels I have ever read!

Deck The Hores breaks from typical tropisms (not a word but should be!).
It is refreshing and sweet and utterly consuming. I literally dove in last night after yesterday’s snowfall with a cuppa and stayed up until 2am!

While it is set in the late fall and follows into Christmas it doesn’t fall prey to standard Christmas romance bits. There is no tripping over Hallmark cards, no MC that has someone swooping in to save them and restore faith in holiday cheer, or peppermint coated anything.

Deck The Hores may be set in this timeline but breaks from the cookie cutter narrative giving readers a glimpse into what following your instincts can look like. That while it may seem rare, instant connection is possible. I know this to be true. On December 5, 1995, I went out on a date with my hubby (after knowing him for a matter of days). I knew then that he was and would always be the one.

In Deck the Hores readers meet and fall in love with Nancy and Karl, 2 steadfast characters we have come to know and love from @authormeganmcspadden earlier works. Through their story, readers watch as their connection is fast and furious and how they navigate their forever mere days after meeting.

Is it love and does it have to be at first or can the spark be enough to tell how their love will grow overtime?

Do we have to know everything all at once, or can we trust our instincts and have fun finding out along the way?!?

#falalalalalalalala heck yeah!!!

I adore @authormeganmcspadden and her novels and hope that you will give this book some love. It is simply wonderful and the perfect read for the winter nights ahead.

4.5/5

I am deeply honored to have been chosen as an ARC reader of “Deck the Hores” by Megan McSpadden. Like everyone, I fell in love with Karl and Nancy Hore when they first appeared in an Unexpected Path and was ecstatic to get to read their origin story. Even more ecstatic that I didn’t have to wait until October to do so.

I’ll be honest, I don’t normally love the “insta love” trope in any movie, show or book but I fear Megan could write any single trope and I’d buy in. Like every book before this, I absolutely loved the writing style, and the way the chapters fit together perfectly, following different point of views from moment to moment.

Not only did it bring me back to the 90s/2000s in Ontario Canada (THE NOSTALGIA WAS REAL) but it also had the perfect nod to the previous books in the series, tying in all my favourite characters perfectly. I especially loved when Karl told Nancy that he thinks Bennett will own hundreds of dogs one day.. because IYKYK.

As usual, the chapter art was absolutely perfect and the playlist that Megan made to compliment the story will be on repeat for a while over here.
The entire Hore family is one of a kind, and I loved meeting Karl’s parents because talk about parent goals… not that I’m surprised because they raised the most green flag man crush of a son. THE MAN THAT KARL HORE IS.

Thank you so much Megan for trusting me as an early reader, and sharing another beautiful, healthy relationship with us readers.

This book quickly became my nighttime companion-couldn't wait to crawl into bed just to dive back into Karl and Nancy's love story. It was the perfect way to wind down at night, their story stuck with me all day long.

I know instalove isn't for everyone, but it's extra special to me because that's how my hubby and I met. We moved in together after just one month of dating.
IYKYK. Like Karl, we knew right away we were each other's ONE. That connection felt so real to me through these characters.

I absolutely loved watching Karl and Nancy grow into such a strong, loving married couple.

Who doesn't swoon over a man who knows exactly what he wants?

Nancy got to experience not only Karl's love, but also the warmth and acceptance of the entire Hore family— love so powerful it even rippled through to Nancy's own family. If you don't already know these two, this book will make you want to read the whole series.

The setting made it even more magical. Niagara Falls in the 90s? Total nostalgia! I can't even remember the last time I saw a mention of a VCR in a book. And yes, I'll definitely be making a trip to Country Fresh Donuts... thanks to Meg... (I'm drooling just thinking of their wonton soup and donuts).

I strongly suggest you check out Deck The Hores
playlist on Spotify while you read, it makes the experience that much better.

Trust me, this one's a must-read-go preorder your copy now!

I really enjoyed this book! I love when authors include a playlist! Music plays such an important role in my everyday life, and having songs connected to the story adds such a nice touch and helps set the mood. As a Canadian, I also found the glossary hilarious because everything in there felt so familiar to me! Thinking about it, I thought it was really smart to include it since not everyone will get those references.

I loved how, when Nancy meets Karl’s parents, she wonders not only if they’ll like her, but if she’ll like them. We always think about wanting to be liked, but sometimes the opposite happens and that’s a whole different challenge. Another thing I appreciated was that Nancy doesn’t fall in love instantly. It makes their impulsive marriage feel a bit more realistic. I also liked how she realizes that the life she chose isn’t perfect, and that she has to adapt to it. That touch of realism made the story even more relatable.

Chapter 36 made me laugh out loud, and the end completely warmed my heart. I love how Nancy and Karl's relationship evolved throughout the book!

A little fun fact: Nancy’s birthday is the same day as my childhood dog’s. She passed away three years ago, and I still miss her so much, so that little detail hit me right in the heart.

This is the fourth book in the series, and I'll definitely read the first three next!

I fell in love with The Hores when I read 𝘼𝙣 𝙐𝙣𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙝 and knew immediately they were special!

I was itching to know more about them and how their love came to be, so when Megan announced she was writing 𝘿𝙚𝙘𝙠 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙨 I was over the moon with excitement for this installment in the 𝑅𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒, 𝑅𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 series.

I will be honest, I am not usually a fan of the insta love trope, but damn, this one works, and it works really well!!!

Karl Hore is special, and I just adore him.   You can easily tell why Nancy fell head over heels with him so fast and none of this book seemed far fetched at all.

And I absolutely adore The Hore family. Karl’s parents and brother are just amazing.  Their entire family just makes you feel like you have been wrapped up in one big hug.

Honestly, do not hesitate to pick this book up.  In fact, just run to grab your copy 𝑻𝑶𝑫𝑨𝒀!

While you can read any of Meg’s books as a stand alone, I HIGHLY recommend picking up this entire series and starting right from the beginning.  You will fall in love with not only The Hores, but every other character she has written.

I am sad for this series to be coming to an end, but I think it was ended perfectly with this one!

Thank you Megan for an advanced copy for an honest review 😊

I was so excited when I heard we were getting Karl and Nancy’s love story, we first meet the Hores in Megs first book as the loveable, hilarious, meddling next door neighbors to Bennett’s home and again in the ABCs of you and me as the dotting parents of Sophie. I fell in love with them from the first time they barged through that door and truly did not think I could love them more and then I read this book. This was a life changing experience (no really I bought tickets and braved Toronto just to experience the Royal after reading this). Megs books are a warm hug and this one having so many quintessential nods to Niagara Falls felt like coming home. The story grabs you from the first line and while I would have said I am not an insta love girl it just makes so much sense for these two, I fell for them just as fast as they did to each other. From the exploration of Nancys messy family to the way Karl is ready to ride into battle with his m’lady while barley knowing her this book gave me all the warm feelings and left me kicking my feet and giggling the whole way through. A truly perfect read (although be warned it will make you hungry) Meg you did it again, thank you for giving us this story and raising our standards in men one book at a time. ❤️🐄

I am so beyond thankful to have received this book as an ARC in return for my honest review!!

I was smiling through the majority of this book while reading!! I usually go for books that aren’t instant falling head over heels for one another but holy cow!!! I was hooked from the very beginning and did not want to put it down because I wanted more and more of Nancy and Karl!! I absolutely loved their entire love story!

There were parts I would get a little teary eyed over because I felt so bad for how Nancy was treated throughout her life! She is just such a genuinely caring person and deserved more as well as Celeste! My heart broke for them, they didn’t know what true love felt like until later in life! Karl’s family though, they are everything that you could hope for as parents and in-laws! This book had all the feels-I was giggling, heartbroken, in love, smiling like a fool, and it even had a little spice to it at times that had me kicking my feet!! Definitely getting the rest of the series soon! Highly recommend this read! 💜

When you meet a man after stepping in a big pile of manure, what else can you but marry him?

Deck the Hores is amazingly sweet, funny, and enjoyable to read. Karl and Nancy were two side characters that would show up throughout this series, but you can’t stop the main character energy coming from these two.

McSpadden brings us their story in such a fun way! From the first time they meet to the epilogue, Karl and Nancy will have you loving every minute. Whether it’s instalove or a fated meeting, they are all for it as they jump feet first into their new life together. I particularly loved the support Karl would show Nancy as she dealt with feelings of inadequacy and belonging during the first few months of their marriage. It’s a feeling that many of us can relate to, and I hope we can all find a little bit of the support Karl Hore is giving out.

Take a break this holiday season and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate as you read Deck the Hores. It’s the perfect way to spend your holiday break.

Like all of Meg's previous books, this was perfection! We met main characters Karl and Nancy all the way back in the book that started it all, An Unexpected Path. They were two meddlesome and totally loveable neighbours who quickly became favourite characters and their origin story was much needed!

I'm so thankful to have been able to read an early copy of this book and as usual, I loved everything about it! They were everything I wanted them to be and everything that I knew they would be. Such a genuine, loving relationship that proved that insta love exists and is very, very real!

I plan to read this again when the official copy makes its way to my bookshelf (and probably a few more times too!) and I'll be sure to provide an even more detailed review of everything I love and why.

While you can read any of Meg's books as stand alone, I recommend starting from the beginning and working your way through the series. You'll fall in love with every character and want more! Congrats to Meg on another amazing love story!

This was perfection. This is all.

Kidding, I'll dig a bit deeper here. When we met the Hores in An Unexpected Path, they were the perfect, nosy but not "too" meddling neighbours that Bennet just needed to have. Now fast forward 2 years and we're learning so much more about them, and it was a perfect closing the Right Place, Right Time series. It's the origin story of those fun neighbours also Sophie's parents, set back in the 90's, so I was here for it. It's being toted as an insta-love, and yes it is, but it's more of a 'lets take a chance, because I know this is real' type of story. And while being a fan of 'insta-love' I know many people aren't, but I think this could sway some people. It felt so real, the way Meg writes her characters from both points of view, you feel for them, with them, want to be them.

Thanks for bringing the Hores to the forefront Meg, and I can't wait to read what you write next.

I have been impatiently waiting for Karl and Nancy's story since they made their first appearance in book 1 of the series An Unexpected Path. Our favorite over invested with the fun name that they totally play into. 3 books later and we finally get to see how they met.

I loved their whirlwind romance. I'm not typically a love at first sight fan but McSpaddeen weaves the story in a way that makes it believable. And you find yourself routing for our MC's to succeed. Plus, we get some great throwbacks as the book is set in the 90's. As well as some nice Canadiana. Having family in the Niagara region and being familiar with the area I could picture so much of the book in my head. It was so fun watching Nancy discover herself and become the domestic goddess we see in the first few books. Karl is such a walking green flag, even with his multiple proposals. You can't help but want to wrap him up in a blanket and protect him from the world.

This prequel was the perfect end to the series, even if I'm sad to see it end. Meg's books just keep getting better and I can't wait to read whatever she puts out next!

Deck the Hores by Megan McSpadden is a cozy, nostalgic peek into the backstory of Nancy and Karl Hore doting parents and meddling neighbours in the Right Place, Right Time series. It’s equal parts calm, warm, and quietly romantic, in the best “elder millennial comfort read” kind of way.

We meet Nancy during a season where she feels disconnected from her own family and unsure where she belongs. Karl, on the other hand, seems to have his life path neatly mapped out… but life steps in and rewrites his plan with a little help from instant chemistry, elopement energy, and opposites-attract charm.

The writing captures a very ’90s-type love: open-hearted, a little naive, and refreshingly straightforward. I was genuinely surprised by how self-aware both characters were in their early twenties. I definitely wasn’t that emotionally articulate at that age! One line in particular stuck with me:

“It’s not even the romantic stuff. It’s the way he looks at me. Everything is we, not me or you.”

Swoon!

The pacing is quick and binge-able, making this an easy one-sitting read. I personally could have used a touch more conflict (just my unhealed heart talking 😉) and maybe an extra hint of spice (person preference) but the story works beautifully as a gentle origin story for two characters whose long-term love we already know is that goodgood love.

The Canadian references are delightful, and the supermarket scene felt hilariously familiar (ketchup chips, Coffee Crisps, an Aero bar… very necessary but holy #inflation batman!).

Final thoughts: If you’re a fan of warm, low-drama romance, insta-love that actually lasts, and small-town softness, this is one to pull off the shelf, especially if you’re already invested in this series. Now I’m even more curious to back to the other books and see Nancy and Karl.

Sometimes you just have to embrace your inner Hore.

This was a cute read. It was exciting to read all of the Canadian and local things like the Royal Winter Fair, The Barenaked Ladies, poutine, and KD just to name a few.

Karl and Nancy definitely was an insta love story but one that I could believe. It just made sense and their love was very sweet.

Crazily enough this was by first read by Megan but I look forward to going back are reading her other books!

Thank you @authormeganmcspadden and @haylingbookstormltd for providing me with an advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
