Invicta #2

Sanctuary

Rate this book
What is your sanctuary?
For Mickey, he never needed one, he was his own. Until now. In a situation spinning out of control, Mickey is forced to make a move and he's not sure how to handle it. He's an intelligent, self-reliant man who never depended on anyone for anything, but now he is alone for the first time in his life, scared.
By accident, he ends up at Invicta, the hottest new male go-go dance club in town. Owners, Kade and Holt, know the behavior all too well, but Mickey's trust factor is leveling out on zero, until he spots Toryn. Sometimes sanctuary can be found in the strangest of places.

"Sanctuary: A place of refuge or safety. Shelter, retreat, hideaway, hideout, haven, refuge, harbor 'People automatically sought a sanctuary in time of trouble.'"

Hellooooo cliffy! Dammit!

son of a bitch

I don't feel good today so I'll make this brief. Of course the sex is amazing... it is Piper Kay were talking about here. I did have a problem with the way Mickey was handled right after he got out of his abusive situation. If it were me, I don't think I would have come back to Invicta or even talked to those guys again. But then we wouldn't have a story now would we ;) The story was good and has potential but it ended right when things got super interesting. I mean, I couldn't believe it when I read "The End".

dun dun dunnnn

I love the humor Piper Kay throws in her books. She just cracks me up! 'Oldie-locks' ! But my most favorite quote in Invicta: Sanctuary is....

"I'm fairly certain that if you sneak a peek in your drawers, you'll find a little wee-wee between your legs too, and it probably looks a lot like mine. So don't flip your froggies behind me being naked. Its how I sleep and to be honest, I'm not used to having someone knock on my door in the middle of the night."

To sum it up, It was ok. Sex is good, there are some funny moments and the story has potential but I don't like cliffhangers. This isn't that bad of a cliffy, but just when the story started to escalate it ended., Also, I need to know that Sweetpea is okay. Then, WTF is going on with Toryn's past coming back to haunt him and then Mickey's ex-psycho. I guess we'll find out in the next book. I just hope it's soon.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

Following straight on from book 1 Invicta is now open for business and Kade and Holt are determined to treat the young male dancers that work for them as part of one big family. The difficulties they suffered at a young age are never far from their minds.

This is Toryn and Mickey’s story.

Mickey reminds people a little of a young Kade. Tattooed, brash, cocky and quick tempered but in the last 12 months all his self confidence has been leeched out of him. An abusive relationship has changed his personality and now his temper rises even more quickly usually in self defence.

After being rescued by the guys from the club his temper lands him on the wrong side of Toryn after he punches him in the face. Kade and Holt, ever the mother hens, have Toryn take him home for the night to keep him out of harms way and maybe because they recognise a little bit of themselves in the two men. The sparks are flying between them as well as the fists.

They go from fighting to fucking very quickly and that would be my only complaint about the story. It just happened so fast.

Toryn may be nursing a black eye but his emotions take over and he can’t stay away or turn down Mickey. The man has brought him pain and now it seems he is going to bring him pleasure. After a passionate night together Toryn tries to get Mickey to stop over analysing everything and take back the power from his ex.

Just as it looks like the two men are planning to spend more time getting to know each other Piper ends the story.....but who is the stalker sitting outside the apartment and what chaos is he going to cause?

I loved this Piper. I didn't want the story to end! I read the book in one sitting, it was that good & I didn't want to stop reading it! I'm happy that nothing happened to the puppy or I would of lost it! My heart was in my throat a few times with that. Oh my gosh , I hope Mickey & Toryn get to have their HEA & get their exes out of their lives for good. I was so happy to read that Holt & Kade are still so in love & had some of their story in this book too :)Can't wait for the next book!!

Sometimes in our lives, there are situations that happen that may make us run, fight or put our guard up. For the men of Invicta, they have all been in situations that have caused them to do just that.
I have to admit, this story started off a little confusing for me with all the alternating POVs.

But, once I got a handle on who was speaking I really enjoyed this story. From the get go, I knew that Toryn was going to be a character who was full of passion. I was surprised by Mickey’s character. I saw him as a broken, self- conscious individual, but then I got further into the story. Where I thought that Mickey would need to be consoled he turned out to be the one who did the consoling.

Toryn and Mickey together are hot. I am a lover of the M/M genre and I admit, I am very picky with my love scenes. I felt like the sex scenes between the two men were believable. It wasn’t something that was just thrown together for the sake of having a M/M romance. There was a passion between them that jumped off the pages.

There is another story weaving its way through the pages and we learn that Toryn and Mickey are more alike than maybe we thought. Just when it seems like both men will get what they have always wanted in a partner, the past comes crawling back and begins to haunt them.

I enjoyed this story and I am looking forward to reading more about Toryn, Mickey and the rest of the men of Invicta.

I love the series. We continue to follow our MCs from book 1 I adore the relationship between Kade and Holt, former go go boys now owners of Invicta a high end dance club in Houston. Mickey finds his way to Invicta after fleeing an emotionally abusive boyfriend Trevor. Kade and Holt recognize the fear and anxiety in Mickey and correctly guess he has had a difficult time in life. Mickey sees Toryn on the stage and is enthralled. There is a chemistry between the two. Boy is there... fans self. Trevor threatens Mickey to come home by pretending to hurt Mickey's sweet little dog. This works and Mickey flies off for home to rescue his beloved Sweetpea. Holt and Kaiden pride themselves as being the protectors of their club family. Thus Sanctuary from life's storms. I just love these guys so much. Toryn and Storm decide to follow Mickey home incase he is in danger. Mickey finally takes his power back and flees Trevor with his dog. The Invicta family wants to help Mickey. who doesn't trust them. He also has major anger issues and takes it out on the guys. He goes home with Toryn and things get hot hot hot hot......A blast from Toryn's past unexpectantly show up and life eta interesting for all involved. Is it Spring 2015 yet? Grabby hands for book 3.

Holton and Kaiden's story continues with added characters who grab your heart. Older and wiser they try to help younger versions of themselves. The club they opened (Invicta) is a success and now their goal is to show their employees compassion and let them see that even though life can be hard there is always a way to happiness if you work hard for it. Toryn and Mickey are kindred spirits so it's not surprising that they each have a past involving psycho exes. This series is Fantastic and I highly recommend it. I can not wait for the next installment !! Piper Kay digs deep into the trials that being gay sometimes brings and she shows us all that what matters is a persons heart not who they share a bed with.Brava Piper! Well done!!

Where do I begin? Invicta: Sanctuary is a tale of passion. If you've read the first Invicta--and I suggest you do before reading this sequel--we get to see some of the original characters from the first Invicta installment. However, make no mistake, this is not a retelling or a direct continuation of the first book. This book is all about the newbies that are bringing it on the Invicta stage. At its core Invicta: Sanctuary is mostly about breaking free of other people's constraints and embracing your life, your future, and your desires on your own terms. It's funny--well, that was gonna be a given, Piper Kay always makes us laugh--it was sweet, and it was HOT! I don't think it gets much better than that.

What do you get when you cross a cocky but sexy troubled young man in a bad relationship with a club dancer who has had some bad experiences of his own? You get chaos... and chemistry! You get Mickey and Toryn! You get Invicta:Sanctuary!

A second book in a series always has to be as good as the first and with Invicta:Sanctuary, Piper Kay does not disappoint! She gives us great characters like Mickey and Toryn who are as complicated as they are adorable and sexy and makes us fall in love with them. However, what pulls the whole package together is the revisiting of character Kade and Holt from the first book in the series.

I cannot wait until the next release, and to find out what else unfolds in their lives and behind the doors of Invicta. Five stars... all the way!

Oh my what an amazing and yummy m/m read! This book is awesome and not like any other m/m reads that I have read! Mickey is a hot blonde man who is dealing with a twisted twit of a man that try's to control him! But the way he tries to control him is just evil! Until he meets Toryn! Toryn is one sexy, hot and flexible man! He's so yummy that Mickey can't seem to leave him alone! Just an amazing read!

But most of all it wraps around you and gets under your skin - cannot wait to read more of these amazing men's story, bring on book 3!

Oh no…. This book is kind of a mess.

Mickey is taking a few minutes to hide from his abusive boyfriend, and ends up in the parking lot of Invicta, where he is forced out of his car by Kade and Toryn, Kade actually has his fingers around Mickey’s neck. Then Mickey answers a phone call from the boyfriend, where we hear his dog is about to be abused or killed (I nearly shut my tablet off and walked away). Mickey heads home, Toryn and another man following behind, unbeknownst to Mickey, where they witness his fucked up relationship, and Mickey finally making a stand. They help Mickey leave and take him to Invicta, where a very bizarre chain of event occur… Mickey is feeling threatened, is an angry asshole, acts out, punches Toryn, then is sent to stay with Toryn at his apartment. What? Why? Where he and Toryn fight again, then fuck, and are all lovey dovey. My head was spinning from the odd behavior of both of these men, and the unexpected and out of place violence. They bond over their issues, have very hot sex, have a couple of confrontations, and there is a weird cliffhanger ending. They also ignore the dog, never feed her, never deal with Mickey’s banking issues which start off as being super important.

There were inconsistencies in the story.

Toryn: “No I was not abused, mistreated or neglected as a child. My real dad left before I was born, denied me to this day, but I don’t know him. My stepdad is my only dad. My parent’s rock, but inside, I always felt like something was missing.” (So his parents are ok, but his biological dad is gone.)

Toryn: “Personally, since finding out I was adopted, my best guess is the original parents just didn’t give a fuck either way, probably got dropped on my head or some shit when I was a baby.” (Now he’s adopted?)

Toryn: “Mickey, I’ll give you the short version. A few years back, I was out on the streets. My parents, who I hope burn in hell one day, kicked me out. So I was out there alone.” (His parent’s “rock” but they kicked him out and he hopes they burn in hell??)

So we go from having nice parents, to being adopted, to being thrown out over a couple of chapters.

Then there are the typos…

“I haunch over him”

“seeing how skiddish I’ve become”

“stay out of site, Toryn”

Mickey’s name misspelled to Mikey.

Twice one of them licked his bottom LIPS.

There were more along that line. I don’t understand why an editor didn’t catch these? This is what will ruin a story for me. I am not a very well educated person, but I read a lot, and this is what brings down what could have been a good book. I could have lived with the out of place violence, but when I see that many typos and inconsistencies it kills a book for me. The plot could have been ok, I got where the author was going, both men have issues with ex-boyfriends, and Invicta could have been a safe place, with the help of Kade and Holt. But that isn’t what came across to me at all. Mickey had a horrible experience at Invicta, which just turned violent, it wasn’t a sanctuary at all. Then the ending was just crazy. I won’t say and ruin it, but I was baffled.

I feel like I’m in the minority on this one, I took a look at Goodreads to see what others thought about this book and it had mostly decent ratings and reviews. I’ve tried to include some examples of my issues, so I don’t just come across as being a picky bitch. Again, I didn’t HATE this book, I could have ignored a typo here and there, but there were too many issues for me to like it.

Invicta: Sanctuary Book 2 in the Invicta Series by Piper Kay!

Mickey has never needed a sanctuary before, that is until now. He is forced to make a move as his current life is spinning way out of control. Now alone for the first time in his life he must realize that he has no choice but to depend on others but doesn't come easy for him. Now through a complete accident he finds himself at the cities newest and hottest Go-Go dance club , called Invicta. The owners of this hot club, Kade and Holt (OMG their story in Invicta 1, was quite amazing) have seen Mickeys type many times before but Mickey has zero trust in anyone. That is until he notices Toryn and things will change fur Mickey in a big way.

Toryn and Mickey are crazy hot together and I love these guys and their connection is beyond wildly hot! Mickey is the broken guy where Toryn is the guy full of life, romance and passion and exactly what Mickey needs in his life. The sex scenes between these 2 characters was so undeniably hot and the author wrote their sex scenes with complete justice for these men.

I loved how Kade and Holt rescued and took Mickey under their protective wing as they saw themselves in Mickey. Due to his temper, Mickey punches Toryn in the face but Kade and Holt convince him to take Mickey back to his place as the guy needs some rest but that's not exactly what happens when sparks ignite between them. Things turn sexual quite fast between these hotties right away and man can Piper Kay write hot gay sex scenes.

I love the beautiful writing of Piper and the characters she develops and creates are some of the hottest and most interesting I have read about. This novel is just as hot and brilliantly written as Invicta 1. I am always thrilled how much Piper gets the gay club scene as her research was spot on. I for one can't get enough of her beautiful stories and characters. I highly recommend Invicta: Sanctuary-Book 2 by Piper Kay and don't forget to pick up a copy of Invicta 1 as it's a must read.

Four and a Half Stars

This story has some abuse described. If you're sensitive to that, do not read.

I thought that this book was far better than the first. Mickey and Taylor's story is one that is probably far more common than not. I did like that the first book was tied in - that Holt and Kade were doing what they could to help better kids who would otherwise have nobody.

Taylor is a new dancer - he is living his life away from a bad past. Mickey is someone who is fighting to gain his own independence from an abusive lover. Mickey keeps showing up in the parking lot of the new club, Invicta and Kade and Holt want to help him.

Mickey is reluctant to accept the help, but when things get out of hand, he has no choice. What was a night of terror, turned in to a night that neither he, nor Taylor would forget.

I loved the mystery behind both Taylor and Mickey's past - it made for a great story. Taylor is a fun, lovable character and Mickey grows on you too. They have found, in each other, someone who understands their past and is willing to fight for their future.

I can't wait for the next installment, because I want to see what happens!

I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

Loved this book.Loved the club and loved the sex. It keeps the story of Holt and Kade going but also focuses on Toryn and Mickey and they budding but difficult relationship. Everyone at Invicta has a past they want to move far away from. I can't wait for the next book to see how it all comes together.

This book is filled with powerful men. You've got Kade and Holt from book one. They are doing what they can to have a safe environment for dancers. Toryn is on of those dancers. It seems he has demons in his past. Mickey is running from his. These boys might be able to comfort each other but can they make the long haul? This book ends on a cliffhanger. You know what I'm reading next.

Well damn. Yep that pretty much sums it up. Holy moly what did I just finish, that was…..brilliant. When I asked Piper if these can be read as stand alones, she told me “no they should be read in order.” Well let me tell you they “shouldn’t” be read in order, they “MUST” be read in order. You must read book one, then you must read book two, followed by you MUST read book three. This series is seriously addicting.

This book is different from most first person POVs, in the fact that there are not just one first person POV but quite a few of them. But please don’t let this scare you off. Having these different POVs is necessary for the book. It works and is essential for how the story is told. It is also a big reason whey these books need to be read in order. You have Kade and Holt from book one helping create Toryn and Mickey’s story, so you really need to read Salvation in order to fully understand things that go on in Sanctuary.

Every once in a while everyone needs a sanctuary, a place to not just escape, but a place to feel safe. In the beginning of this book, feeling safe is the farthest thing from Mickeys mind. Scared, alone, desperate? Yes, but feeling safe is laughable for Mickey. Till he meets Toryn, the hot gogo dancer at the new club, Invicta. Toryn turns his world on its axis, gives him an out from a dangerous situation, makes him angry and horny all at once. Toryn gives him hope, and possibly a home, a sanctuary. Why? Because Toryn knows what it feels like to need a sanctuary.

Until the very reason Toryn needed a sanctuary shows back up. Sending the very fragile, beginning of relationship Toryn and Mickey are creating into a tailspin of fear and uncertainty. The entire book I kept waiting for Piper to do what she does best, wrap the ending up giving our two main characters the happy ever after they deserve…..no NEED. Because dammit I NEED that HEA. So after plenty of nail biting she does wrap it up, but not in the way you expect. I did not see that coming, it left me cursing a blue streak. All I can say is that I am so glad book three is already out, because I am not sure I could have handled that ending without knowing I could start book three right away.

As much as I loved book one, this one had me on the seat of my chair till the very end, and I can without a doubt say that I loved this one even more. Piper Kay is a fantastic story teller and I can’t wait for you to read this series and fall in love with it just as much as I did. So I highly recommend this book as well as the entire series.

First of I feel the need to point out that the word sanctuary means a place of refuge or safety. I just need to get that stated because this title is Invicta: Sanctuary ....

WARNING>>>RANTING SPOILERS AHEAD>>>QUIT READING NOW IF YOU DO NOT WANT SPOILERS!!!!WARNING!!

... maybe I'm naive, but I take that to imply that it's going to be a safe haven for these lost and abused boys. I do not expect to find an abuse victim being verbally and physically assaulted in a sanctuary the same damned night that he's 'rescued' from his domestic abuse situation!! WTF?! You do not convince an abuse victim that you're trying to help him and that not everyone is like they're abuser by being verbally abusive and physically assaulting him yourself!!! My God! Within hours of leaving his abuser he's assaulted by three different men in what we're told is 'sanctuary'?!

On top of the fact that this is just freakin' wrong on so many levels it also contradicts the personalities of characters that we'd just heard and seen. Away from him they're all compassionate, kind, caring men who've been in bad places themselves. Some of them at least have been abuse victim themselves. They would have to know that these aggressive, abusive actions would just scare him more and make him feel even more alone and backed into a corner.

After that there's no redemption in my humble opinion. I'd never trust any of them after that kind of treatment.

Though in the grand scheme of things these aren't the focus of my total dislike of this book. I do want to also mention that I actually have two full pages of notes about horrible grammar, vocabulary, jerky, sometimes confusing POV changes, illogical jumps in personalities,etc.etc. and some examples of these. And no, I don't mean the urban slang, that's a whole other matter entirely. I'm sorry but behind is not a replacement for about, after or over. It just isn't and it's very distracting to keep reading it being used as though it is.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This was a fun read. It pops in right after book 1 and showcases 2 new characters. We briefly meet Toryn at the end of book 1, but now we get to learn about him, and what drew him to the club. We learn just how much alike Mickey and Toryn are and understand why they are so drawn to one another. This was a fast paced read and the ending left me wanting book 3 right then and there. Book 3 continues their story and lets us learn about what the outcome of Toryn's past will be. I have this need to know if these two strong and stubborn men can overcome this, and what Kade has planned to take care of the problem for everyone around. I high recommend picking this book up as well as book 1 and diving into Invitica. I do love how Piper focuses on the abuse that can happen to men, which is something that isn't talked about at all. With the characters being gay, we see just what it can be like for them when parents have a set standard, but also what happens when someone gets sucked into the sick web of a controlling, abusive person. I look forward to seeing how the story unfolds.

This was the second book in The Invicta Series. This was the story of the relationship between Mickey and Toryn. The characters were kind of rushed and not really given much of a background. I understand that this was sort of a short story but I didn't realize that it would end in the middle of the best part in order to make book #3. I have to say I was very disappointed and think it some how could've ended better to make me want to buy the next book. Now I'm just afraid I'll be disappointed again. Others however may enjoy this story more than I did. Don't let my opinions stop anyone from purchasing this book. Everyone has different tastes.

I think the author tries really hard to help readers visualize the dance moves of the MCs on stage, which is a not insignificant portion of the series. But this proved a little challenging for me to appreciate. When combined with a bit of plodding and predictability, I couldn't keep going.
