Jeff Kemp’s Facing the Blitz: Three Strategies for Turning Trials into Triumphs provides accessible and relevant methods of dealing with the unexpected challenges, problems and difficulties life never fails to provide. This inspirational book is definitely another one that overuses one of its title words (“blitz”), but looking past that, the material it offers is beneficial and useful to readers at any stage of life (even those who do not like football). Kemp uses examples from his life, on and off the football field, as well as those of his friends and family, and I greatly appreciated his perspective. Overall, Facing the Blitz is encouraging and uplifting, a great reminder of how to traverse life’s challenges, taking the bad with the good.

Read this after coming out of one of the most difficult seasons of my life. The encouragement as well as the cold hard realities it made me face was refreshing in a time I needed it most.

The blitz analogy lost its luster about halfway through the book. I get that the blitz im makes for a great one but most of the book I wish he would include other ones. Overall, good book that helped me through a trial.

FINAL RATING: borrow it (especially if you're married)

An interesting take on facing challenges in life using a sports analogy know as a blitz in football. This insightful book provides opportunity to flourish and grow in family life, faith, hope and love.

Jeff speaks in a voice that we can all understand. His examples are of real life issues. Even though he was an NFL quarterback it feels very relatable and that is something I definitely appreciate.

Facing the Blitz

[Disclaimer: I was provided a readers copy of Facing the Blitz via NetGalley in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.]

So, since I'm required to be honest in my review, let me start the honesty in this way: I didn't finish this book. Frankly, the book was boring and it is just not my kind of read. I wanted to like the book and I wanted to enjoy the book, but it just never took off for me the way I had hoped it would. And Tony Dungy's praise notwithstanding, this is not a book for everyone.

I think the thing that bothered me the most about the book was the metaphor. I think the word 'blitz' must appear on every page about 50 times. OK, that's a wee bit of an exaggeration, but seriously, I think the readers will get the metaphor without being reminded of it on every page. By the time I got through the first few chapters, I was worn out--kind of like a quarterback who has faced too many blitzes in a game by a crazed linebacker. A metaphor is good as long as it is not overused or overworked. He wore me out with his constant reference to my struggles as a blitz.

Another problem I had with the book is that there is nothing unique or distinct at all about the advice in the book. I have read a lot of books, sadly books like this one, and all they ever amount to is exactly what the subtitle says: Turning trials into triumphs. But let's be honest: trials do not always turn into triumphs and no amount of strategizing (that may not be a word) is going to change that. I'm always skeptical of people who write books and have quick, easy answers--especially athletes whose struggles tend to be things us mere mortals cannot understand.

This book was too quick; too easy. I think there are better ways to deal with trials and better books to guide us to those ways. And I don't know if this book was intended to be a particularly christian strategy or not. So if you are looking for a particularly christian point of view, you might find this book to be a bit shallow.

In my opinion, this book tried too hard. The truth is that life is not a game, and if it is a game, it is certainly not a game of football. I understand Kemp went through some rough times as a football player--the son of a former football player, politician, etc. But I would venture to say that this is all relative: getting traded from one football team to another might be traumatic for him, losing a game might suck, but it is not the same--no matter how much we want it to be--as losing your career, losing your house, losing your family, and not having the benefit of millions of dollars from contracts to get you through. So in this regard, nothing he says is relevant to everyone even if it is relevant to a few--like some of his athlete friends. I think this is a fine example of a book that is simply out of touch with 'real' people. Like I said, he tries too hard because he comes across as that super pumped up and positive athlete who views everything in life as strong safety he must avoid or a defensive end he must out think.

So as much as I wanted to like this book and as much as I wanted to recommend it, I just can't go too far in my recommending and liking. I'm not going to deny that this is a book some will find helpful and encouraging. I'm just not one of those people because I don't see the struggle. When you have walked a day in my shoes, then you can tell me how to turn my trials into triumphs.

My dad used to tell me to hope for the best, prepare for the worst, and expect the unexpected. While you cannot choose what will happen to you most of the time you can choose how you will respond to what does. Life throws curve balls. You need to learn to catch them and throw them back. Like a blitz in football, surprises, though you know they can happen, can sneak up on you when you least expect it.

Jeff Kemp, former NFL quarterback and now vice president of FamilyLife, is no stranger to the blitzes both on and off the field. Kemp had a successful 11 year career as a quarterback playing for some great time like the Eagles and 49ers. Since 2012 he has been working with FamilyLife as a speaker and networker as he seeks to strengthen families through Christ. In his book Facing the Blitz: Three Strategies for Turning Trials Into Triumphs, Jeff Kemp shares three strategies to handle the blitzes of life that he has learned in his own life.

In football “a blitz is what happens when an excessive number of defensive players approach the line of scrimmage with the intention of rushing the quarterback and sacking him for a significant loss in yards.” (23) Using the analogy of a blitz, Kemp lays out three strategies for recovering from and responding to the blitzes of life: (1) take the long-term view, (2) be willing to change, and (3) reach out to others. The blitzes of life could be a death in the family, the loss of a business, the death of a dream, a broken marriage, missed opportunities, and more.

Throughout the book Kemp weaves his own life experiences of failure and success, both on and off the field, into the three strategies he presents. He offers wisdom learned on his own, and taught to him by others, in some of his deepest moments of professional and personal failure. In addition to the wisdom and advice he gives, Kemp clearly shows that the ultimate wise choice and lesson to learn in life is that Jesus Christ is the best response to the blitzes of life. Kemp draws on his relationship with Christ and the words of Scripture to guide readers through the hardships of life.

As a Christian, Kemp is committed to pointing people to Christ in every season of life. He is under no illusion that following Jesus will make this your best life now. He understands that following Jesus can often times give life its greatest opportunities for blitzes.

Facing the Blitz is a fun, fascinating, and fruitful look at how one man has responded to the blitzes of life with wisdom and Christ. This is the perfect book for any sports fan or dad.

The then-Houston Oilers defense stepped up to the line of scrimmage. Jeff Kemp and the Philadelphia Eagles offense were ready to make as much progress as possible down the field. The defense took off to accomplish a full out blitz. The offense immediately made adaptions to the blitz. All-Pro tight end Keith Jackson ran a new route to the uncovered middle. Jeff Kemp saw Keith and threw his best over and around the defense. Keith caught the football and ran for a touchdown. The Eagles had just faced and overcame a blitz.

In "Facing the Blitz", Jeff Kemp discusses three strategies for turning trials into triumphs.

We all face blitzes (trials) of some kind. This book will help show you how to face your blitz head on and how to overcome it.

I've called myself an avid book lover, although it has been awhile since I had found a book that captivated me to where I would finish it in a few days, that is until now. I finished "Facing the Blitz" in just under a week. I was hooked on the easy reading, the football lingo, but most importantly I had an open mind to the three strategies to facing my blitzes.

It was inspiring to hear about a former QB's faith in God. I believe God's timing is perfect. The words from "Facing the Blitz" were exactly what I needed to hear this past week.

The consumer-investor approach to life really hit home. It was like a subtle wake-up call to stop with the selfish, consumer mentality and work on being more of an investor in other peoples lives. My focus also shifted - we are here for a purpose and in NO way is it a selfish one.

At the end of each chapter included "Time out for Self-reflection: and "Run the play: practical application", I think these end-of-chapter assessments are key for the reader (those "Facing the Blitz") to take hold of the ball and make his/her play to overcoming the blitzes.

This book was written to help face any blitz in any stage of life. How will you face your blitz?

This book is a great thought-provoking reminder to be reread whether facing a blitz or not.

Overview:
Facing the Blitz was written by an ex-NFL football player and the whole book explained it's three strategies for overcoming trials. Each strategy is thoroughly explained in several chapters, it's divided up enough that it's easy to understand and doesn't skim through important topics. Mr. Kemp writes with many different life examples – ones such as in football, his home life, marriage, in fellow teammates' lives, friends' lives, as well as outside sources.

Pros:
This book was fantastic. I really can't wait to go back through it and mark passages that really stood out. Even if you are not currently facing a blitz, this book goes into morals and tips for assessing your own life. Early in the book, Mr. Kemp writes that in times of hardship you can't tell people to just stop being upset, but instead he writes to you when you need to move on and when it's okay to be struggling. The strategies are like close friends, comforting you, but pushing you forward and towards Jesus. If you don't know that much about football, it's okay, because the examples are all pretty easy to understand. (Even if you don't catch one or two examples, you will still get the idea/purpose.) Football does not dominate the suggestions/conversation more than it should. Facing the Blitz supplies tips to people who aren't facing problems just by giving exercises that require you to check your morals and motives for the way you live.

Cons:
I really did like nearly everything in the book! I would say the only few things I would change if I could would be: a few more examples aimed towards home life. Just because I felt like we got to know more about the teammates than his own family in some chapters. Certain chapters were also mildly mature, so the book is probably best for adults and possibly young adults based on the individual case – I would recommend this book to any adult though, it's a great book.

I had the pleasure of receiving of a copy of "Facing The Blitz: Three Strategies for Turning Trials into Triumphs" by Jeff Kemp from Bethany House. This is by far one of my most favorite books. Jeff Kemp has done an exceptional job creating a book that merges one of America's most favorite past times with a topics that most people find difficult to address - personal trials. Creating a platform discussing the importance of overcoming obstacles then relating it to football, illustrates the commonality we all share, which is life isn't easy, but all that matters is how you choose to get through the hard moments and enjoy the good times.

The book is broken down into three strategies. Within each strategy are several chapters. Each chapter begins with a personal story, transitions into the heart of the chapter and concludes with the ending of the personal story. This method allows the reader to relate Jeff's experiences on and off the field to their own experiences. My favorite part of the each chapter is the personal application found at the end. It allows the reader an opportunity to work through their own obstacles and create a "play by play" on how to triumph over trials.

Jeff Kemp has intertwined his book with personal success and failures as well as remedies on how to be victorious. The ease and simplicity in which this book was written allows for practical understanding and application on victorious living in the midst of life's most difficult moments.

eff Kemp, former quarterback of several NFL teams’ writes of the trials we face in life and how to handle them. The first thing I found interesting in the book is that Mr. Kemp likened the trials we face to blitzes that occur on the football field. Mr. Kemp writes of the many lessons he has learned in life and shares the anecdotes others have taught him. There are three lessons he imparts to the reader for turning life’s trials into triumphs: take a long-term view, be willing to change, and reach out to others.

I found Jeff Kemp’s lessons interesting. I especially found the lesson of being an investor in other people’s lives rather than being a consumer. I felt that this was a reminder to serve as Jesus served and also reminded me of the passage in Philippians 2:3 “Consider others as more important than yourselves.”

Overall, I think this book is thought-provoking on the ways we can positively face our trials. I would recommend this book to a football fan or anyone that wants to learn from another individual’s story on how you can make it through the trials in life.

The Blitz. In football, a blitz occurs when the defense sends as many men as possible to disrupt the offensive play of their opponent. It is designed to confuse, breakdown, and eventually send the opponent into a scramble so that they do not execute their intended goal.

In life, blitzes happen as well. In his book Facing the Blitz, Jeff Kemp give three strategies for turning life "blitzes" into opportunities to succeed. The three strategies are: Take the Long View, Be Willing to Change, and Reach Out to Others.

These three strategies are then look at more in depth as Kemp shows how they affect all of life. From working from a small vision to a large vision, working on personal growth, to living outside one's self, Kemp show how life's "blitzes" will come and that by taking the right approach what could be a setback can be turned into a celebration.

While this book carried multiple themes, I found it to be one of the best I've read when it comes to strengthening relationships. He speaks from his own experience, and not on the basis of psychological surveys or the such. He is open and honest about his family life, and that's part of the appeal for this book.

Another theme is to overcome blitzes, and took look for the opportunity blitzes present. I'm a big sports fan and love to watch and play sports. So his metaphor of a blitz appealed to me. For me I need these reminders to look for opportunity when things don't always go the way I want, and in many cases I might hear the same message over and over, but the message might not register until one person or author presents it in a certain way. That is the case with this book.

While not everything he presents in this book hits home, those were two of the strong points.

I really liked this book. Kemp shares his insights from his football career. He experience the blitz and how to move through it. He shares lots of his own experiences as well as people he knows who have successfully forged a way through. He includes three strategies: having a long-term view, being willing to change, reaching out and inspiring others. He also includes some very practical questions and suggestions for action. This would be a good book for someone considering a career change. It might be best liked by a fan of football since many of the illustrations are from the game.

This book is definitely geared toward guys (even though they say it's for everyone on the back cover), and I felt it was also primarily geared toward men in an upper-level management position at work.

It was repetitive, and while some of the message is good (invest in people, particularly your spouse and children), it just dragged on. Yet another book that could have been greatly condensed.

The book was not at all what I was expecting. I caught the author on a radio she and it inspired me to get the book. I was expecting an inspirational instructional book about how we all can overcome our own blitzes in life.

The book did that a bit but it was much more of a biography read with less of an emphasis on Biblical guidance. Never the less I did enjoy the book.
