After his vampire brother Simon betrays him, leaving him for dead to pursue a human love, Franz Drake the Bloodmaster vows to turn the Florida beaches into his eternal kingdom of darkness and to teach him the true meaning of passion. Original.
It was a quick read, the plot was easily predictable. I enjoyed for the palate cleanser I picked it up for. Some not so common vampire lore and tricks used in this story, along with some overly played themes. No glitter.
Franz Drake is discontent having floated his coffin for three months in the Gulf of Mexico. Deprived of sanity by the ordeal, he plots against his Simon, who failed to heed his telepathic call for help. He is further aggravated the woman Simon was interested in the moment of Franz's demise has survived his telepath-controlled gunman. released, the bloodthirsty Franz vows to destroy the unsuspecting Simon Cassie.
What is commendable about this book It is well-written with characters and a decent plot Our heroine, Cassie, is an overweight bookshop owner who is forced to slim down when Franz's remote assassination attempt leaves her a long coma Simon saves Cassie giving her some of his vampire blood, and she awakens from her just as Franz arrives and starts killing innocent people. Possibly even more repulsive than Franz is the human Jerry, a wife-beater and child rapist, and Ms. Athersby does a good job of into head. The also clearly knows about hurricanes and uses one as the backdrop to the book climax.
There are a few hiccups, though. The book is a whopping 443 pages and can drag at times, like the scenes where Mike goes for a swim and accidentally frees Franz from his coffin. It's never clear what grabbed Mike's foot in the water (was it just his imagination Plus, it takes Cassie forever to figure out what Simon is. Then, when Clarise hurts her back, Paul, Eric, and Simon all act like saying her name is taboo. It's a bummer that she nor the vampire Bev could help Cassie in the end.
