This volume - investigating the work of a particular photographer, in this case, W. Eugene Smith - comprises a 4000-word essay by an expert in the field, 55 photographs presented chronologically, each with a commentary, and a biography of the featured photographer.
If it was just a matter of the pics, I'd give this one 5 stars. Unfortunately though, there is an awful lot of pretentious twaddle in the text (both from him and others), which dampered my enthusiasm somewhat.
I enjoyed these images...some I’d seen before, others I hadn’t. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised to learn that he was a civil rights activist long before it was fashionable to be so.
Great photographs. The only reason I took off a star is because the essay at the end is incomprehensible to me. Maybe I'm not smart enough to understand...
