Thank you so damn much Emma for this amazing earc 🫶🏼
You guys are going to love Bjorn and Astrid so much!!
This series is an insta-read because of how much I love every single character. The way Emma wrote the most unique and charming set of characters and made them grow and change into one big family. That's not to say that Emma didn't make them suffer first!
Bjorn had such a painful backstory, from the beginning, with his family, to then being trapped and kept for years. The journey of healing and freedom he goes on with Astrid was beautiful, and it made both of them grow alone and as a couple. The way the emotions were handled was amazing. The pain of the trauma is being shoved to the side for survival and then felt in little and lasting ways. I truly think it was done in a great way, not forced or fake, raw and real.
Bjorn’s devotion and love are what dreams are made of. He was a yearner, and I lived for the slow burn. The way their feelings developed and grew was perfect and made the love believable and remarkable.
The plot was the perfect backdrop. It was present, always acting as a moving force for the romance but also for the characters themselves. Astrid and her sister and Bjorn and his freedom, all of their desires conflicting with reality.
The sisterhood gave me chills. To see the power of women who have been treated as less unite to make something better and bigger than their captors ever could was marvelous. And it wasn’t made in a way that felt forced; the sisterhood was established early, and making the call back when Astrid needed them felt right.
And the taste of Rose’s book was amazing. Just the idea of bridal games with the war coming and Gunnar and Rose figuring out what they have has me excited.
Overall, both characters stayed true to who they were while clearly growing with each other and into their relationship. The plot wasn’t just about moving along the romance, it was interesting in itself. And the side characters were the perfect addition to the story.
Being able to BETA read was a dream come true, and I was ecstatic to be back in this world with our Trolls and their badass women!
Quotes:
She was his, he decided. His to protect. His to win.
If he had to wait a hundred years and still only get to taste her, then it was a life worth living.
Even Bjorn was surprised he'd come up with a dress that pretty. The woven pattern created a bodice that would wrap around her waist and cup her breasts in the same path he wanted his hands to follow.
She had no idea where he was taking her, but she realized she'd follow him anywhere. He reached back for her hand, and she trembled as their fingers interlaced. It was like they were the only people who existed right now.
"How could I not find you beautiful? Would you like me to tell you all the reasons? The grace in your hands when you talk. The sky that I hadn't seen in ten years in your gaze. The sound of your voice eased every angry part of me. There are a hundred reasons and more to find you beautiful, Astrid."
"I don't know which god looked favorably upon me to send you into my life, but I will have to find them and worship them until I die."
Because with every nip of his teeth, every stroke of his tongue, she became addicted to his touch. She wanted every ounce of him, the good, the bad, even the horrible things he had done trapped in that labyrinth. She wanted it all.
"When I fuck you, troll wife, it will be in a soft bed, so I do not scrape your back against the stones, so there is no part of you that is sore." He leaned down, nipped at her ear, and then growled, "Other than your sweet pussy, which will remember the shape of me for days afterward."
"You do not know how you have tormented me from the very first moment I saw you."
"It is hard for me to look at anyone else beyond the sight of your stunning beauty, bright one. I teased my oldest friend, saying what I knew would make him angry. But my eyes never strayed from you, nor did my heart ever skip a beat for another. You are without a doubt my guiding star. I would follow you through any darkness, Astrid. I would be a fool indeed to look anywhere else."
Now she thought it just might be the home she'd always dreamt of. Because he would be in it.
"You call me bright one, but you are my sanctuary, Bjorn. My safe place in this world."
BJORN MY TORTURED ANGEL OF A TROLL😭🫶🏻 again I ask…where tf is MY troll husband????
I never doubt Emma. Phenomenal troll romance as expected. Bjorn had me melting, he deserves the world!!!!! I love the storyline Bjorn has and the labyrinth as a whole. So heartbreaking but I love him so much. I support his berserker rights and wrongs ok? Astrid is a baddie. Her powers + Bjorns felt so unique together. The concept of the priestesses (troll and human) are so interesting to read about.
The piercing scenes in these books will always be TOP TIER!!!!!! 🥵 I volunteer as troll wife!!!
We got a perfect lead up to the next couple, I am foaming for it!!!!
Thank you Emma for this ARC!!!! TEAM TROLL FUCKERS!!!!
I was so excited to get this book. I already read and loved the first book in the series, so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one the moment it released. A Light So Blinding takes place in the same world as the first book but follows two new characters, making it feel like an interlocking standalone.
While I’d absolutely recommend reading book one for the best experience, book two does give enough information for you to follow along if you haven’t. But honestly… skipping book one would be a tragedy because both books are so worth it.
The opening of this book was fantastic. We’re introduced to Astrid, one of many priestesses, and I loved learning about her role and the lives of the women around her. Their duties were fascinating and at times horrifying. It genuinely shocked me how some of these women were treated. You know it’s a good book when you start plotting certain characters’ downfall because they’re so vile you want them stopped immediately. Watching beloved characters suffer under awful people made for a deeply emotional reading experience.
Astrid and Bjorn are both incredibly well-written characters. At first, they seem like they’ve led completely different lives, but the more you learn, the more you see how much they actually share. Both have been used, pushed, and shaped by others just to survive. That shared pain is part of what makes their connection so strong and believable.
The author did an amazing job not only showing who they were before the story began, but also letting us watch them evolve. The versions of themselves at the start feel like shells compared to who they become. Their growth was powerful and beautifully done.
The storyline was clear, engaging, and full of depth. I hate when books have no plot or rely only on fluff this was definitely not fluff. This book has action, danger, tension, heartache, and moments that make you genuinely fear for the characters. But it also has a wonderful romance and a great level of spice that adds warmth and breaks up the intensity in the best way.
There were a few moments where I skimmed and had to pull myself back into the story maybe two small sections felt a little empty. I also enjoyed the ending, though I do feel like it could have had a bit more added to make it hit even harder.
Still, it was a fantastic read overall.
What I Liked: Astrid and Bjorn incredibly detailed characters with strong backstories that made them easy to understand and love. The world beautifully detailed, blending breathtaking imagery with horrifying realities. The portrayal of King James’s rule shocking, dark, and honestly enough to make me pack my things and run to a troll cave. The romance and spice slow-building, emotional, and ultimately scorching. Watching the characters grow and change.
What Didn’t Work for Me: There were a few slower moments where I skimmed. The ending was great, but I did wish for a little more (can’t explain without spoilers!).
Would I Recommend This Book? Yes absolutely!
Would I Reread? Yes, I definitely would.
How I’d Sum It Up: Dark and action-filled at times, warm and tender at others packed with everything you could want. A fantastic addition to the series.
“I don’t know which god looked favorably upon me to send you into my life, but I will have to find them and worship them until I die.”
Listen sometimes a girl just wants to be worshiped. And boy did Bjorn worship Astrid!!! I loved this story so much. This series just gets better and better. I was so impressed with the Priestess’s and how well they worked together and defended each other. Astrid was also so strong and compassionate. The way she not only fell in love with Bjorn but all trolls was sweet to see. She came off as this super stoic and unfeeling person but underneath she felt it all and felt responsible for them all. These two make a very good couple. They are similar in that they feel responsible for others and are loyal and just. They both want justice not vengeance and are willing to do anything for it.
Also they were so hot together. Bjorn worshiped her in every sense of the word. He loved her so much.
A LIGHT SO BLINDING was a bit of a let down after book 1 but I did still enjoy the world-building around the trolls and their customs. We returned to the human King's labyrinth where Astrid, one of the King's priestesses, is determined to rescue the troll known as the Bull so she can bring him to Trollveggen and reunite with her sister. While I liked the idea of the plot, the story itself was a bit meandering and it felt very slow, something that wasn't so evident in book 1. I did enjoy the scenes in the grotto with Bjorn's mom and the other witches and it was neat to see this other side of the trolls; but there were lots of moments throughout the book that felt dragged out.
Bjorn was an enjoyable character and I liked the exploration of this trauma and the way he slowly found himself again and learned to harness his berserker anger and rage in a productive way. I saw some reviews complaining about him being too soft or weak but the man just escaped 10 years of torture, degradation, and humiliation -- let him breath and just be for a bit. I just wish he could have found more peace by the end of the book rather than being forced into still being a weapon for the troll King.
While I liked Bjorn I never completely warmed up to Astrid as the FMC and love interest. She was often shallow and didn't really think about anything else but what she wanted. She knew about the labyrinth for many years but didn't really care until she heard her sister was down there. I think Astrid loved the control and power she had as a priestess and she ignored a lot of suffering to maintain that life; she did have some remorse toward the end of the book and wanted to right some of her wrongs, but I needed a bit more empathy and grovel from her. There were also a lot of inconsistencies to her personality and history; maybe the author didn't completely know what she wanted out of the character?
Because Astrid felt fairly flat as a character it made it hard to really sink deep into the romance between her and Bjorn. There were moments that felt really sweet and gentle but then other moments where I didn't know why they were interested in each other because the chemistry just wasn't there. They just felt a bit mismatched and like Bjorn was putting way more effort into making the relationship work than Astrid was. And even when Astrid did try to put in effort, like getting wife piercings in her ears, it felt more like Astrid thought she was supposed to do it not that she actually wanted to because she loved Bjorn.
I am still curious about the next book, especially with the bridal games, and I'm interested to see how Gunnar plans to woo Rose since right now she's so traumatized from her time in the labyrinth.
Content Warning: references to rape and torture of side characters
This was such an amazing addition to Emma Hamm's troll-a-verse. (Has anyone coined that term yet?) One of the most intriguing characters from the first book, Bjorn (aka The Bull) has his own story of resilience, romance, and healing.
The book begins with the perspective of a brand new character, Astrid. She's a priestess working for one of the wealthy elite, as a sort-of unbelievably sexy Bene Gesserit. She's meant to be beautiful, quiet, and a loyal servant to her pathetic lord. She finds a note offering her a reunion with her long-lost sister in exchange for releasing The Bull from the king's labyrinth. She'll have to use all of her training, her wits, and her allure to free the beast and save her sister.
There are some darker themes in the book, with both characters essentially having spent the last decade or more in slavery. They are both deeply impacted by their experiences, but not defined by them. I like that the author doesn't sugar coat or gloss over their pain or ignore the lasting trauma. Still, there are lovely moments of joy and light in the book. I love the adorable awkwardness between the characters. This was a highlight for me:
"He'd never been more attracted to or confused about being attracted to a woman in his life."
I think this might be the first time I've seen a character like Bjorn blossom into something so different than when we first meet him. He speaks more, his thoughts become clearer, he even starts to make jokes. It's such a wonderful, subtle change throughout the book. I found myself smiling down at the words, so happy for him to start to feel alive again.
"She'd never seen anything more beautiful than him. The moonlight turned his horns and figure into a silhouette outlined by the moon. A warrior, a survivor, a man who had been through so much and come out alive... Perhaps both of them could be free from their shackles now."
Oh! And the combination and amplification of their powers was SO FREAKING UNIQUE AND COOL! I wont spoil anything, but it was so unexpected and imaginative! I loved it!
I was so lucky to get an ARC for this book and I read it cover to cover in the emergency room. Emma Hamm's books are always lovely distractions from the real world, but this one will always be special to me for helping me through a terrible experience. Seeing both characters love and support each other was so beautifully well done.
The story starts off a bit slow. I missed the tension and spark that often comes from a love-hate dynamic — it just wasn’t there in this one, unfortunately. However, despite the slow pace and lack of intensity, it turned out to be a sweet and heartwarming love story between two souls finding their way to each other.
I think this has been my favourite Emma Hamm book to date and I’ve read almost 10. It’s full of yearning and healing and really shows the importance of leaning on others when you need it.
I’m not exaggerating when I say I was already teary by chapter 2. Bjorn is such a sweet soul who has had a decade of torment with no respite. The fact that he doesn’t believe himself worthy of anything broke my heart.
Astrid is truly a badass and I thought she was intelligent, capable and genuinely believable in her strength. I adored that she recognises the power of women together rather than as opponents.
This book had a different vibe from the first one because the primary hurdles weren’t the actual relationship but rather the situation. It was less so about them growing to love one another and more so about them harnessing the affection they held for each other to overcome a bigger political obstacle.
WHAT WAS THAT EPILOGUE?? Give me Gunnar and Rose's book right now🗣
The book's setting is amazing, the characters are super respectful, and Bjorn is a sweetie🎀
Astrid is a priestess who works for a nobleman until things happen and she has to sacrifice herself to save her sister. When that happens, she's "rescued," in a way, by Bjorn (a gladiator), who protects her until the very last second🩷
The dynamic of their relationship fascinated me. He falls in love first and faster. That doesn't mean Astrid loves him any less. She saves him and sacrifices herself for him just as he does for her❤️🩹
Bjorn's nicknames for Astrid and the tension between them... my god, I almost die. AND THEIR PIERCINGS? Hot🔥
Bjorn, girl-, look at this MAAAN:
"His thumb crested over the peak of her cheekbone, tracing the lines of her face. “I don’t know which god looked favorably upon me to send you into my life, but I will have to find them and worship them until I die.”"
"Bjorn got down on his knees before her, sinking until he could stare up at her with all that awe in his expression making her feel like a goddess. “There are many beautiful things in this world,” he murmured, then pressed a kiss to her thigh. “Wisps floating above a pond. Moonlight peeking through leaves. Stars so bright in the sky that they illuminate the universe. I would give up every single one of them if it meant I could gaze upon your beauty for even a second.”"
Dr. Smut's Checklist Book Review 1. Trigger Warnings: 1/1 So while this wasn’t a dark romantasy by any stretch, the trigger warnings still hit. The trauma Astrid and Bjorn went through, and somehow survived, was genuinely heartbreaking, but the way it bound them together and made them even stronger was beautiful to see. And the way Bjorn held onto his trollmanity (because let’s be honest… humanity is not the vibe when humans are the real monsters here) had me clutching my chest. Full Point for making me feel all the things! 2. Characters: 1/1 Astrid is brave, stubborn in the best way, and an absolute badass. She refuses to break, even when the world tries its hardest. Bjorn is pure strength and resilience wrapped in one giant troll-shaped softie. The way he keeps going, keeps protecting, keeps feeling after everything he’s endured? I was unwell. Full point for Characters 3. Plot: 1/1 This plot gripped me. It’s emotional without dragging, magical without getting lost in the weeds, and grounded in the kind of survival stakes that keep your heart in your throat. Every move felt intentional, and Astrid and Bjorn’s journey unfolds with the perfect mix of tension, tenderness, and “oh sh!t” moments. I was hooked from start to finish. Full point for Plot 4. Smut: .75/1 I’m giving this a .75 and let me explain before the Troll Piercing Council comes for me. Yes, I did have an entire unhinged TikTok Live discussing how hot troll piercings are (no, I will not be accepting follow-up questions). And yes, the tension and the heat we did get? Delicious. The only reason this isn’t a full point is because I wanted MORE. More spice. More BJORN. But what was there? So yummy. .75 out of 1 point for the Smut! 5. Fun-to-read: 1/1 This one gets a full point because it was fun as hell, gripping, emotional, and $exy. It’s the kind of book that grabs your face and suddenly it’s 2am and you’re fully invested in troll drama like it’s your full-time job. It reads easy, it flows beautifully, and every chapter gives you something to smile, gasp, or internally feral-scream about. This one gets a very enthusiastic full point for Fun to Read!
Overall! Thats 4.75/5 stars and it gets 3 chilli peppers for the spice. And listen… I am LITERALLY OBSESSED with this woman and her brain. The way she writes? The worlds she builds? The EMOTIONS she puts me through??? I would like to file a formal complaint and also demand more. Immediately. Thank you SO much to Emma for the eARC in exchange for my honest review! I devoured it (and screamed about troll piercings on TikTok Live like a totally normal person). This book is everything I love about romantasy: heart, trauma, magic, healing, and a hero who could absolutely bench-press me.
Astrid & Bjorn are easily in my top couples of the year. While I enjoyed “A Darkness So Sweet,” I LOVED “A Light So Blinding” mostly due to them - together and individually. Just completely obsessed with their relationship, especially Bjorn. His healing journey from the terrifying and brutal “Bull” of the labyrinth we met in the last book, to who he is at the end of this one is truly masterful - my heart broke and soared for him so many times. And Astrid is simply an icon.
💚 Monster romance 💚 Troll MMC x human FMC 💚 Forced proximity 💚 Accidental bond 💚 Trauma and healing 💚 Piercing as a love language 💚 Troll magic and witchy women 💚Burn it down 💚 Open door explicit spice level 🌶️🌶️.5
Astrid is an absolute delight as an FMC. I loved how she was clever and driven, while also still vulnerable and uncertain at times. A determined caretaker with a need to be in control. She takes some big risks, and not everything goes according to plan. I adored how she was able to draw Bjorn out of himself, take care of him, and calm his temper - sometimes with a firm hand. My favorite part was when she taught him to be a good host 😂
Bjorn had an incredible - and nuanced - emotional journey. From 10 years of captivity to trying to find himself again in the aftermath. I loved every small revelation and set-back, his reckoning with his father’s legacy and berserker nature, and realizing that even though he’s not the same man he was before captivity, he is still deserving of a bright future and can craft the one he wants. Could go on and on about all the little moments I loved.
The idea of the priestesses, women who quietly control the powerful lords while also being their property, is so compelling and unique. Powerful, smart women - especially angry ones - really get me. The troll women were also extremely fun, especially Ylva. Loved the roles these women played throughout the book.
The found are starting to family here, with Ragnar & Maia showing up. Plus Gunnar and my favorite new side character, Rabbit ❤️
While sooo much of the story is focused on the relationship, there is a ton of troll lore packed in and a lot of action. The ending in particular was a perfect blend of emotion, action and revelations.
— vibezz ⚔️ human priestess x troll fighter ✨ slow burn ⚔️ trauma healing ✨ forced proximity ⚔️ he calls her bright one
mini blurb — ✍🏻 To find and save her sister, Astrid is willing to give herself in the gladiator pit where prisoners, both trolls and humans, fight for their lives. Bjorn gave up years before any hope he had about seeing his home again, but when he sees Astrid, something stirs what was left of his old self...

MY BABIES 🥹🥹🥹🥹❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹
This was a journey in healing the scars of the past, in all honesty I don't even care what the plot of the book was I was too focused on the character development of Bjorn 😭❤️🩹 he endured years and years in the worst conditions fighting for the human lords' enjoyment and when he was finally free it was so cute and gut wrenching reading about himself trying to fit in the world. 😭 and the only person able to get to him when he was too far gone in his thoughts was Astrid *i'm crying* He just wanted to live in peace, near his people, raising those pigs 🥹 thought that was so cute, omg I wanted to give him a hug every other page, 5 stars for him but the whole book wasn't just my thing, couldn't care less about the war between humans and trolls, all the lore that wasn't even explained, you know what? Let's not even discuss the details and practicalities bc there were none and those present were even wrong. Like addressing Bjorn as a "man" - “You are a good man, Bjorn.” - “I am not the same man I was when I left.” - “They remember the monster they were all terrified of. But now they get to see you as a man.” Why not address him as male? Seems more correct this way since he's a F troll (🫦)
Who knew I needed a deliciously broken troll in my life?
After reading Ragnar and Maia’s story earlier in the year, I knew I was going to be thoroughly excited for Bjorn’s book. I was IN LOVE with him from the small glimpses we got from book 1. Emma did not disappoint.
He was emotional, he was broken, he was corrupted in every way possible. He was the definition of red and rage and corruption. Bjorn thought he couldn’t be trusted anymore — until her.
Astrid was a strong fmc. She was a beacon of light in the dark, especially for Bjorn. She had immense power and very little flaws in my opinion. She was perfect for him and his character.
I did feel like I miss a TINY bit of tension towards the beginning, making it seem a little slow, but then the yearning came and I couldn’t put it down. At ALL. Two sittings and it was over.
And the epilogue ?! I knew they were going to get a story 🤭😏
Overall 4 ⭐️, 2 🌶️!
Thank you so much to Emma and team for allowing me to read an advanced copy of A Light So Blinding!
First I want to say it was a HUGE honor to ARC read this book! After falling in love with Maia and ragnar from book one I absolutely had to apply for the ARC.
Y’all …. I read this book and DEVOURED it ! absolutely falling in love all over again. honestly even more than the first book.
A Light So Blinding completely consumed me. The tension, the aching, the yearning? the way every emotion felt raw and earned.
It hit in all the right places. Emma Hamm took everything I thought I knew from book one and turned it into something deeper, more intimate, more alive.
And listen as a hardcore orc/troll lover, I didn’t think anything could top the first book for me. But this one? It proved me wrong. The emotional depth, the slow unraveling of the characters, the vulnerability beneath all that strength? it gave me everything I crave in a fantasy romance.
These characters didn’t just grow, No they bloomed through pain, loyalty, and love that burned slow and steady until it blazed.
This book is a symphony of longing and redemption every page soaked in heart, every word heavy with meaning. I closed it feeling both full and absolutely gutted in the best way possible. 😭🖤 now I need book three RIGHT MEOW 😩
A Light So Blinding features Astrid, human priestess and Bjorn, troll berserker. Bjorn has been imprisoned in the King’s Labyrinth for ten years. When Astrid gets a note telling her that she must rescue Bjorn in exchange for her sister, who is with the trolls, she immediately throws herself into danger to get her sister back.
This was really sweet. I loved the first book and the hurt feelings and fish out of water the FMC had to go through. This was just adorable, with Bjorn being immediately so taken with Astrid and Astrid immediately trusting Bjorn completely. While so, so enjoyable, it felt like it missed a step maybe? I missed the depth of the first book and the working to improve their relationship. This one was zero rocky bumps and, again, so sweet but just felt like it was missing something.
Overall, still so fun and enjoyable. I’m loving the world that has been created and I just need the next book with Astrid’s sister!
This is only my second Emma Hamm book and I've been so impressed by her writing. Sweetly emotional with a ton of action and a great storyline. So invested in this world - I can't wait for the next story to be released!
The babies we never knew we needed in our hearts 🥺💜
From the moment Bjorn was introduced in Darkness, I wanted his story immediately and A Light So Blinding absolutely delivered on it. A tortured troll who closed himself off from everything he knew and loved, retaining the barest thread of life, being saved by Astrid, a priestess who is the epitome of a sunbeam.... how could you not love them and want for them? Thank you Emma for the eARC and for continuing to write my favorite books, I cannot wait for book 3.
This was such a fun read!!! I was so lucky to get the ARC and now I cannot get enough! I’m so ready for the next book which was confirmed to be Gunnar and Rose’s story (an absolutely high anticipation read especially for the yearning and slow burn).
Loved Bjorn’s story with the renewal of hope and perseverance to overcome the trauma of the Labyrinth and finding love with Astrid.
Astrid being sold and willingly going into the Labyrinth for her sister - although that part is a bit of a plot hole, and not really explained as to who or why that letter was sent.
I’m not the biggest fan of insta-love but this is an exception to that. They are so sweet together and working together not only to start their lives outside of the kingdom together but overcoming the hurdles the Troll King throws at them.
Let them have their little farm raising pigs 💕

A Light So Blinding by Emma Hamm is book two in the Kingdom Below series and gives us the story of Bjorn and Astrid.
Bjorn was a prisoner for over ten years and forced to fight for the entertainment and financial gain of human lords welcomed to the barbaric labyrinth of the evil king.
Astrid is a human priestess who’s sister has been lost for ten years and she receives a letter from the troll king stating that if she helps Bjorn escape and return to his people she can have her sister back.
They embark on a journey to escape the labyrinth, get Bjorn home and exchange him for Astrid’s sister. But not everything goes to plan. When taking a break on their trek Astrid accidentally forces a magical bond between her and Bjorn marking them as mates. But this won’t due so they make a plan to visit Bjorn’s mothers home in hopes of finding someone who can sever their tether and ensure that at the end of their journey they can part ways comfortably.
It wasn’t in the plan for them to catch feelings but since they are bound Bjorn decides to try to prove to Astrid that he would be a great troll husband. Bjorn may have come from berserker lineage but all he wants is a quiet peaceful life with a good woman. And more and more each day Astrid seems like she could be that woman.
I don’t want to give away what happens next but know that there is sexiness, angst, conflict, magic, and some twists and turns. If you like big boys with some complicated baggage who are down bad for their girl and want nothing more than to prove to them over and over how precious they are you’re going to love this one. This series is quickly becoming my favorite by Emma Hamm and I can’t wait to see what other stories we get in this world. It comes out Friday, Nov 14th. Preorder it now so you have it ready for release day!
I received an advanced reader copy of this book — all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Emma Hamm has officially converted me into a monster lover through and through.
A Light So Blinding picks up after A Darkness So Sweet, but this time we follow a new couple — and what a duo they are. Remember “Bull” (aka Bjorn), the troll we thought was dead and gone? Turns out he’s very much alive… just trapped in a labyrinth. Now, we get to see this tough, berserker warrior turn into absolute mush for his lady love — and I was so here for it.
Our new FMC, the priestess hunting for her sister Rose (yes, that Rose!), receives a mysterious note from the troll king: if she frees Bjorn, she’ll get her sister back. You can already see where this is going, right? 👀
This story hits the ground running and doesn’t let up. I actually loved how different it felt from the first book — where Ragnor’s story was darker and more brutal, Bjorn’s feels softer in the best way. He’s familiar with humans and knows how to be gentle with her, while she, with her own gifts, understands what he needs. It’s a beautiful balance that makes this medium-burn romance feel so natural and earned.
Half the time, I even forgot I was reading a “monster romance” — it’s just that heartfelt.
I can’t wait to see where this world goes next (and if I had to guess, we’re going to get a whole lot more of Gunnar 👀). When I first picked up A Darkness So Sweet, I didn’t realize Emma Hamm would become a must-buy author for me… but here we are.
If you loved book one, you’ll adore this. It’s just as good — maybe even better — and gives a whole new perspective on this world.
Bjorn my precious Shayla. I love you and your sweetie pie ways. Yes, he’s a rage beserker troll who will destroy everything and everyone in front of them but he’s also the guy who sewed his troll bride the most beautiful dress and pierced his dingle to honor her. (Piercings are a huge part of their culture.. be enlightened people!) Bjorn was in the last book and he clearly had issues as a victim trapped to fight in a gladiator tournament for the evilest king ever. Astrid is a priestess trying to find her sister and she has learned Bjorn may be the way to get her. This story was dark and the whole priestess lifestyle was glazed on as well as the other stuff that women went through. I appreciated that the author did this as I don’t need to read about the darkness of man. I know it. I want to see the women rise up and find their power. This story was emotional at times and had a strong “red string theory” plot. These two were meant to be and life had them come together in the worst place only for beauty to come out of it. The whole PTSD situation for quite a few people was heartbreaking and this book in a fantasy troll world found a way to give victims respect and what they need for healing. Emma Hamm ALWAYS uses her books to hold a mirror to the evil of man’s choices when in power and on those they consider weaker. I loved this. I enjoyed this journey and wish only the best healing energy for Astrid’s kitty. 🐱I received this book as an ARC and I am forever grateful.
And how I love Emma Hamm's books. Every single one I have read-- and I have read so many!-- consistently leave me so darn satisfied. I'm a fan for life, and A Light So Blinding only further commits me.
This is a movingly poignant journey. One full of redemption, of freedom, and of choice. Bjorn's particular arc had my heart crying. This poor man has been through the wringer for a decade. Years and years of nonstop fighting, torture, and darkness. Then the light comes in the form of Astrid. His freedom is only meant as a key to get back her sister, but throughout their journey they find themselves bonded on so many levels, and find their hearts intricately bonded. They change one another for the better. Astrid calms Bjorn's despair and he provides comfort and safety to the now untethered Astrid who navigates unknown terrain. They balance and complement one another so beautifully. Their love story is the most delicious slow burn, and once it burns the spice sizzles!
Something I have always and will always love of Emma Hamm's writing is how she can take 'smut' and make it emotionally charged. The spice carries weight in how it also establishes trust and emotional connection. For me, it elevates the work. And it makes the journey all the more worthwhile!
Simply put: I adored this one, so very, very much!
Thank you to Emma Hamm's street team for this complimentary eARC, I leave this honest review voluntarily. 4.5
A Light So Blinding ARC review. Who would have thought the second book would be even better than the first? Emma Hamm sure has a way of writing pure, unyielding yearning! It’s comfort, it’s healing, it’s everything you’d want in a slow burn monster romance ❤️
Astrid, a veiled priestess raised to live in silence, is thrown into the gladiator pits in a desperate attempt to save her sister. She meets Bjorn, a fierce troll warrior chained by duty who just might become her unexpected ally… and maybe something more.
The story of healing here is truly the best part. This book starts in such a brutal dark place and I absolutely loved seeing these two people move toward the light together.
Both characters are SO resilient and strong and I really loved that so many times Astrid is not a damsel who needs to be saved, and saves herself and the people she loves time and time again. It was cool to see her magic too. This magic system is so fascinating — I love the way it’s portrayed!
The smut was also amazing, per usual! Haha I love how these intimate moments are such high emotional scenes that really suck you in.
Overall, another 5 ⭐️, I’m already dying for book 3!!
Thank you so much to the author for an advanced copy, I would have begged you for it anyway 😂
This one releases November 14th! You don’t wanna miss it!
Bjorn, my sweet, sad and broken troll bby. I just want to wrap him up and take all his pain away. I was only 20% into this book when my heart fully broke for him. I don't know what Emma puts in her books, but I eat them up each time. I finished this one in 24 hours and I wasn't surprised in the least. I asked last time, and I will ask again and again. WHERE DO I FIND MY OWN TROLL HUSBAND?!?
Coming off A Darkness So Sweet, I knew Bjorn's story would break me. Bjorn has come from a long line of berserker's and he has been living - if you can even call it that - and fighting in the labyrinth's for 10 years. Astrid gets sent to the labyrinth partially because the Lord she works with is broke, and partially because she got a note from the troll king that they have her sister, and if she helps them get Bjorn out, they will give her sister back to her. Astrid is a badass, and dives head first into getting her sister back, no matter the cost to herself. She is an absolute badass and doesn't shy away from danger. She loves fiercely and doesn't stop.
Bjorn and Astrid might be my new favorite so far. Don't get me wrong, I love Ragnar and Maia, but these two hit all the points for me. Their powers together? So freaking cool, and I loved to see it. The piercing scenes?!? I almost passed away. The of this book was so perfect and I wouldn't change a thing. Plus the set up for the next couple, and book?! Chef's kiss, and I can't wait for more.
