The Missing Thane's War

Rate this book
For all her life, Enna Summerlark assumed she was a farmer's daughter and nothing more. A whirlwind of events changed that, causing her to leave everything she knew in search of a past she didn't know she had. Alongside her new friends, the dwarf merchant Adrik and the sell-swords O'Doc and Erasmus, the young elf travels to the city of East Fellowdale in search of answers.

The companions' quest hits a sudden snag, however, when Adrik mysteriously vanishes. Now the remaining friends must place their trust in unlikely allies, face ghosts of their pasts, and delve straight into turmoil if they are to discover Adrik's fate.

The follow-up to the critically-acclaimed "The Summerlark Elf", "The Missing Thane's War" continues to build upon The Four Kingdoms, raising the stakes for the world at large and its inhabitants alike!

Brandon Draga was born in 1986, just outside Toronto, Ontario. His love of all things fantasy began at an early age with games like The Legend of Zelda, Heroquest, and Dungeons and Dragons. This affinity for the arcane and archaic led to his studying history in university from 2005 to 2011. In late 2012, he began writing a D&D campaign setting that would lay the groundwork for the world of the Four Kingdoms. Brandon still lives just outside Toronto, and when he is not writing enjoys skateboarding, playing guitar, and playing tabletop games.

a wonderful light epic fantasy. Loved every minute of them as I devoured them. Such a wonderful world revealed in surprising but delicious fashion. And Dwarves as real people, not just a caricature.

The second book, the Missing Thane's War, continues that tendency by seeing Enna (now endowed with a classic adventuring party's worth of companions) heading towards a city in the hopes of finding out the source of Enna's powers. When one of the party members vanishes, however, their quest must change to finding him.

This second, slightly longer volume had more space for worldbuilding. Though the magic system still needs more exploration (imo), the world started to feel more real to me here. I also enjoyed getting to know the secondary characters, especially the banter between Erasmus and O'Doc.

The story continues to feel obviously D&D inspired, which I actually think is a strength when it comes to plotting. The plot is quite episodic, like a D&D campaign made up of different encounters, which I think works well for this kind of straightforward fantasy adventure story.

The Missing Thane's War continues the story of Enna and her companions as they set out on their journey of finding out more about Enna's heritage. Their mission becomes sidetracked when Adrik leaves the group without warning, throwing Enna, O'doc and Erasmus off course and into further adventures.

Having read the first book in the series I was thrilled to learn that the next was already available and even more delighted to find the quality of writing had not change(only gotten better as is the case with any master honing their craft). The pacing and the language used by the author make this a pleasurable read, accompanied by a set of heroes and villains alike which jump off the page in each chapter. What's more impressive is that this novel manages to communicate high fantasy to young adults while remaining faithful to the tone of books for adult readers. As such, and over all a fantasy series the likes of which has never existed before. Bravo and I await the next in the series!
