Jayne Frost #4

Jayne Frost Résout une Énigme: Mystères de Jayne Frost

Rate this book

Jayne Frost is back in MISS FROST CRACKS A CAPER! In this fourth book in the Nocturne Falls cozy mystery series, Jayne is still figuring out what to do about her vampire/elf situation (I’m starting to lean Cooper—that winter elf, summer elf thing has its appeal and who doesn’t like hot firefighters?), and now there’s a new guy on the scene in the form of Sinclair—resident necromancer.

Also, things in town are gearing up for the Orange and Black Halloween Ball. Jayne’s nemesis Lark comes to town (she’s the one who broke her and Cooper up) and wants to be the DJ. Can she be trusted and has she changed her evil ways? Also, suddenly there are lots of robberies occurring in ordinarily sleepy Nocturne Falls. (And pancakes. Lots of pancakes. Because, this is Jayne. Mmmm…) When jewelry is stolen from the ball, Jane has to team up with her friends to figure out which supernatural or supernaturals are responsible.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!

Let me preface my review by saying I love Kristen Painter's books, voice, imagination, style, and many other talents. I've read all her other books and re-read most of them. I read almost 400 books a year in a variety of genres, and do occasional peer reviews of drafts before publication, and still consider Ms. Painter one of my favorite contemporary writers.

That being said, I was really disappointed with this fourth installment of Jayne Frost. The mystery was fine, although the bad guy was exactly who you expected it to be, so it wasn't as mysterious as it could have been. The writing style and dialogue was solid, as always, and I smiled and LOL'd many times.

However, I cannot believe the lack of emotional depth to the characters. The love triangle is over, for which I'm immensely grateful, but the way it ended was absurdly easy and utterly unrealistic. Plus, it showed how shallow Jayne is, which I hadn't before had too much of a problem with.

Greyson and Cooper just casually let Jane go after she has withheld all information about the man she met and fell into instalove with. I mean, serious instalove. With virtually no basis other than that he is a donut maker who can satisfy every sweet craving Jayne has. It began with her testing a donut that essentially gave her a Meg Ryan moment from When Harry Met Sally, and all of a sudden, after the orgasmic experience, this new, steamingly hot guy asks Jayne to the ball. And she accepts and they go on numerous secret dates and outings.

She hides this information from her two paramours, who have been holding out for her for what, two years? And she doesn't give them a second thought.

Also, everything fell exactly and easily into place for Jayne to feel no guilt over how she was treating her boyfriends. And now she magically has yet another man falling all over himself for her. All her friends and family are absolutely fine with her ignoring her boyfriends, barely thinking about them, and running off to be with a new guy. Not one of them had the cojones to tell Jayne how superficial and egotistical she was being by treating her men so poorly. She barely cared about Cooper's sick mother, and only focused on the inconvenience to herself when Greyson was sent to Europe, presumably at great risk to himself.

To add to that, Greyson and Cooper just blithely give her up without a fight. They lay down their swords and walk away without any issue. Seriously? Neither one of them would have done that, especially Cooper, with the baggage and history they have. And I don't believe for a second that Greyson, despite his fears, would just let Sinclair jump in and take his spot.

Then, Jayne is over her break-ups by the time she walks halfway across town to meet with her new flame. Come on. No. If that truly happened, I am so disappointed in finding out how shallow Jayne is. Even if she never would have ended up with Greyson or Cooper, the fact that she fell into instalove with a seemingly perfect man and treated the other two like they were dirt under her boot should not have happened. So she was just stringing them along for years and all of a sudden, in less than two weeks, they're finished and she's perfectly happy with her new man.

Sure, she was kidnapped and in danger, yet again, but everything else came far too easily for the woman who already has everything: looks, money, royalty, popularity, etc.

I'm sorry, Ms. Painter... I'll still read your future books, but this one was so very disappointing. If the next book doesn't attempt to make Jayne finally grow up and allow the characters to mature emotionally, I don't know if I'll be able to finish the Jayne series, assuming it lasts longer than the next book.

I have previously done a few reviews based on the books set in Nocturne Falls but here’s a quick recap of the place… Nocturne Falls, the town that celebrates Halloween 365 days a year. It was set up by the Vampire family the Ellingham’s (Initially Grandmother Elanora Ellingham, and her 3 grandsons) so that supernaturals could live in their true forms, all the while convincing the ‘norms’ (normal magic free people) that it is all an elaborately set, quirky, tourist trap. Thus, the town makes money, the ‘supers’ have jobs and the general public adore the place.

Miss Frost Cracks a Caper is our 4th visit to Nocturne Falls through the eyes of Jayne Frost. She is no ordinary shop keeper. Winter elf, Jack Frost’s daughter, Santa Claus’s niece, heir to the Winter Throne. Even in a town that was set up by Vampires and inhabited by all sorts of supernaturals she stands out.

Ok, now to this installment set Nocturne Falls…

Lark Bramble is Jayne’s ex-best friend from college (Their friendship ended when Lark broke up Jayne’s relationship then tried to seduce the poor man/Summer Elf for herself.) Jayne is beyond shocked when Lark walks into Jayne’s shop ‘Santa’s Workshop’ (it’s a family business) and want’s to take Jayne out for lunch and to talk.

It turns out that Lark wants to do more than ‘talk.’ Lark is a well known DJ and has the opportunity to provide the entertainment at Nocturne Falls greatest party of the year hosted by Elanora Ellingham, The Black and Orange Ball and wants to smooth things over with Jayne.

The ball is always an extravaganza but this year Elanora Ellingham will be debuting an outstanding piece of jewellery. A necklace set with a one of a kind, perfect pink diamond.

I’ve given you enough details and they are not spoilers but from here on spoilers could happen so I will end the story insight with.. An elaborate theft of all the most precious jewels happens at the ball and it is done using Winter Elf magic. Jayne, despite being told by the Sheriff to relax and let him investigate is never one to shy away from an investigation, especially when she gave the go ahead for Elanora to hire Lark (a Winter Elf)

This story has so much going for it. The plot is strong, the characters are colourful, interesting and fun, and there is plenty of romance and drama. Despite the obvious suspect there is still plenty of doubts, mystery and intrigue. The final outcome was one that I did not see coming. All in all this is a truly super Supernatural Cosy Mystery.

The narration by Hollis McCarthy is not only outstanding throughout this book but throughout the whole Jayne Frost series. As there are recurring characters she has to get those voices spot on throughout the series and she nails it! Her narration expresses the mood and personalities of the characters that she is portraying and such consistency throughout a series is a sign of her immense talent!

I do love a cosy mystery and Cosy Supernatural Mysteries are my absolute favourite in the Cosy Mystery Genre.

Kristen Painter is the Queen of the Cosy Supernatural Mystery Genre.

This specific series book starts immediately . . . adjacent to the previous series book. I mean, literally. Hmm. Does literally work here? What does the word ‘adjacent’ mean again? Mmphs.

The previous book ended with ‘someone from the past’ turning up right when the book was ending. This book picks up that same scene – reprints it, and adds a few . . . hundred more pages.

The ex-best friend from college (well, later learned they grew up together, but they didn’t become friends until college, or at least until learned going to same college), is back after about 11 years and wants forgiveness for the crappy things she did. Which directly impacts both Cooper and Jayne. Two parts of the love triangle I’ve never actually mentioned exists in this series (Jayne is openly dating two men at the same time – Greyson the vampire, and Cooper the Summer Elf (who always seems to immediately be described (okay, several times, not always) as a kind of surfer dude looking guy – as opposed to Jayne, who is a Winter Elf (one has heat and heat related magic; other has cold and cold related magic)).

Here I jump to – there can be and have been mystery, or at least ‘peril’ threads in the Nocturne Falls series, but that one is definitely a Paranormal series (unless tons of graphic sex are needed to be considered to be in the paranormal series – these are heterosexual stories (sometimes almost aggressively heterosexual – at least in the sense that every bloody person ever bumped into mentions being attracted to, having been married to, or otherwise romantically linked to people of the opposite sex; and by ‘aggressively’, I mean, there are several times that seem to include an ‘of course’ – of course that specific woman would be interested in that specific man – because they do not share the same gender (there’s more to this but I’ve rapidly lost my train of thought and hadn’t even meant to include any of this anyway)) so I’m quite happy to lack graphic details. While the other (good grief all these asides have just ruined, I say ruined the natural flow of my paragraph, which is common to me) series, this one I mean – the Miss Frost one, is more mystery with traces of romance. And since it’s kind of ‘opposite’ – and because it follows the same character while the other series changes ‘lead couples’ each book, I call the Nocturne Falls one Paranormal, and the Miss Frost one Urban Fantasy. You know ‘Cozy Mysteries’? Well these are more ‘Cozy Urban Fantasies’.

Wow I’m really just rambling around like a moron lately in reviews.

1) An ex-friend arrives, asks for forgiveness; Jayne agrees to be ‘civil’;
2) 11 months (I think it said 11) months pass
3) The head vampire holds a ball – that ex-friend DJ’s the party; Jayne’s mother and aunt (otherwise known as Mrs. Kringle (Santa Claus wife) and the Winter Queen) attend. Neither of Jayne’s boyfriends attends.
4) Before and during the party, various thefts occur.
5) The thefts are investigated.
6) Jayne drools over yet another man to add to her, I believe it’s called ‘reverse harem’.

I mentioned the stuff about genre’s, types of fantasy (Paranormal/urban), and mystery above because, while there are mysteries and the like, they are really simple mysteries. I’d probably have to reread the series to make this comment, but you can almost determine the ‘villain’ by who Jayne doesn’t suspect. But, meh. I’m not here for the mysteries. But instead for the interesting story and characters. (to be fair to Jayne, the book description’s inclusion of ‘Jayne Frost … now private investigator’ is weird – except for the very first book in which she goes undercover at the store in Nocturne Falls, Jayne doesn’t really get ‘hired’ by anyone to solve anything; occasionally ‘forced’ to right the wrongs others say are her fault; or strongly told not to investigate (like in this book here), but at no time does she hang up a shingle with ‘P.I.’ or the like (but the description includes ‘sort of’! . . . right, oops, never mind).

Where was I? Oh, yeah. Good solid story. Passed the time well.

I love this series and this book is no exception. There is so much going on I don’t want to say too much. I will say that I couldn’t put the book down because I had to know what was going to happen next. I really like these characters and can’t wait to read what happens next.

I received a copy of this book from the author,my review has been voluntarily submitted.

This is the best Jayne Frost so far! So much happens in this book! First of all, the book continues immediately at the point where the last book ended with an explosive twist. Infamous Lark is in Nocturne Falls, and she seems to be a changed person. Or is she? In any case, she is here, she is famous and people are eager to see her.
There is a big event happening in Nocturne Falls, celebrity guest attending, we get to meet Jayne’s mother and aunt, and some crazy villains and incidents. There is so much turmoil between Jayne and her boyfriends. And a new and wonderful person who puts everything back in place. Wow! Just wow!
I could probably write essays on this book, how much I like it and list all the reasons, but I would inevitably end up giving too many spoilers. Only Kristen Painter can spin a story like this. I recommend skipping the preview and just dive into it. It is amazing, I read it in one breath. I couldn’t stop. That also might have something to do with me missing Kristen Painter’s written word, but I can safely say that this book just became my Nocturne Falls favourite.
I highly recommend the series. The Nocturne Falls reading order is: The Vampire's Mail Order Bride (Nocturne Falls #1), The Werewolf Meets His Match (Nocturne Falls #2), The Gargoyle Gets His Girl (Nocturne Falls, #3), The Professor Woos The Witch (Nocturne Falls, #4), and The Witch’s Halloween Hero (Nocturne Falls #4.5) in Spell of the Ball Anthology, The Werewolf's Christmas Wish (Nocturne Falls #4.6) in Hex the Halls Anthology, The Vampire’s Fake Fiancée (Nocturne Falls #5), A Vampire's Valentine Surprise (Nocturne Falls #5.5), Miss Frost Solves A Cold Case : A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost #1), The Shifter Romances The Writer (Nocturne Falls #6), Miss Frost Ices The Imp : A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost #2), The Vampire’s True Love Trials (Nocturne Falls #6.5) in Taming the Vampire collection, Miss Frost Saves The Sandman : A Nocturne Falls Mystery (Jayne Frost #3), The Dragon Finds Forever (Nocturne Falls #7), The Vampire's Accidental Wife (Nocturne Falls #8), Miss Frost Cracks A Caper (Jayne Frost #4), and ever growing series of Nocturne Universe Novels, which surpassed 25 by now. Great world to get yourself immersed in.

*Sigh* After four books of hoping for any romantic movement towards one of her suiters, this books gives answers if not true closure or even resolution. Honestly I kind of hate Jayne at this point for how perfect her life is. She never struggles for friends, money, body image, and certainly never for love. I'm not sure at this point why I'm continuing to read since the mysteries have always been a little too predictable.

Miss Frost Cracks a Caper by Kristen Painter

4th in the paranormal mystery series set in the town of Nocturne Falls where everyday is celebrated as Halloween.

Over and above solving mysteries as kind of a hobby, Jayne Frost manages the Christmas shop in town. She also has two men fighting for her time and attention. When the men are called away and unable to attend the Black and Orange Ball, Sinclair the necromancer steps up to escort Jayne.
Jayne has a new man in her life now. And donuts.

This book may make you hungry. Jayne likes her sweets and food. Both are mentioned often.

I hate, absolutely hate love triangles. If I had known there was a love triangle in this series, I would never have started this series. After reading the first book, I still hated the love triangle, but I liked a lot of other things, which made me keep pursuing this series.

It came to head in this book. The heroine keeps saying that she is a modern, progressive woman who has a right to date as many people as she wants. And for the first few books, the timeline is around 5-6 months, so I get around to her getting to know a couple of guys, even if she is dating both of them together. But this one has a time-lapse of a year!

That means that she has been dating two guys for more than a year and a half! It moved from a modern, progressive women territory towards selfish-I-don't-want-to-make-a choice and I-don't-care-who-I-hurt-but-I-will-do-whatever-I-want territory. It got annoying real quick. And this is not the half of it.

What really made this book uber crap is that she doesn't end up with either of them; she finds herself yet another victim. Yes, victim! And then, she has a pity party that her two boyfriends dumped her!

What made me want to bash Miss Jayne Frost, Winter Elf, Jack Frost's daughter, Santa Claus's niece, heir to the winter throne and private investigator... sort of:

1. Her not supporting her first boyfriend. Her boyfriend's mother is dying; the boyfriend with whom she has a history, whom she almost married and now has been dating for a year and a half - yes, that boyfriend; and all she cares about is not having a date for a Halloween ball where she is supposed to show up her frenemy. Yeah, most caring girlfriend of the year award should obviously go to her!

2. Her choosing a 10-day fling over her other boyfriend. Her other boyfriend has a traumatic past caused by a supernatural same as her brand new beau; the boyfriend who has been for her, who has broken rules for her, who has helped her and saved her life multiple times and whom she has been dating for a year and a half - yes, that boyfriend; and she is all for leaving him in dust over some guy that she has barely known for like ten days. And now, she obviously deserves the most loyal girlfriend of the year award!

3. Her sticking her nose where it is not required. Her nosiness is really annoying. Take, for example, her nosiness in Garrett's job. And then she gets angry when he doesn't tell her. What does she not understand about NDA? And it is not like she tells him everything. Whatever!

4. Her trying to investigate. I understand a private investigator's motivation. It is their job. And they are getting paid. She, on the other hand, is neither a private investigator nor is getting paid. Then, why the hell is she not letting the police do their job? She does stupid, moronic things that she actually doesn't need to do and we are supposed to applaud her ability to get into trouble? Not only that but by trying to make her a private investigator, the author manages to make the police look incompetent. Like, she manages to break into the suspect's apartment before the police (How? And why?) or she finds the jewels before the police (the police that is the best werewolf tracker!)

Aside from all this, she is a terrible investigator. The worst kind. The kind that tries to fit the theory to the evidence and not the evidence to the theory. In the last couple of books, she already has a suspect, even before the crime is committed because you know all these are shady characters and are sure to be out trying to cause trouble - a given as they are not nice to her and she doesn't like them! Right! That's how you catch the criminals.

You know, this entire book might have not been needed to be written, if she or her new beau had just told the police about the mark that would make the thief recognizable. She makes a lot of stupid bad decisions. Take another example, she could have simply told the police where she suspected the thieves had hidden the jewellery. She didn't actually have to go there. She could have stayed in the hospital with her new beau (yes, the same one that she met ten days ago, that she is falling in love with, who she chose over her other boyfriends and who ends up in the hospital trying to save her life) instead of running around with a concussion.

5. (Last one, I promise) Her being angry with the people. She is angry with her dad for trying to protect her, with police for doing their job (Again, they wouldn't have to take in Juniper for questioning if she had just told the police about the mark), with Garrett for not sharing details about his job, with Birdie for doing her job..... yeah, there is a pattern here.

This book reads like for a five-year-old, with plot holes and extraneous dialogues. It could have been a lot better.

*sigh*

I just wish Jayne would just grow up! Her two boyfriends did.

So I enjoyed the mystery and the writing style, which is what I love about the Jayne Frost Series.
Nothing has changed in the fourth installment, when it comes to that. But the "low"rating is rather connected to the storyline, more specifically to the romance.

Let's first take a look on the things I like, then I can knit-pick through what I didn't
Like I already said, and keep saying. This is well written. Painter is a talented writer and I adore the world building of the series.
This is rather light on the fantasy aspects. But it's just right for the series.
Still Painter adds interesting new bits to each book and extends the world building a little more with each installment of the Nocturne Fall Universe. It's really masterfully done, light and yet intriguing.

The character building is done in a similar way. After reading so many books set in NF, I feel like, I know this little town and it's nice to always revisit.
Now, in this installment I had a bit of an issue with Greyson. I didn't feel his reaction at the end was in character... but then his character is shrouded in a bit of mystery, so maybe we will get so hear later why he reacted so strongly (it felt cowardly as well if you ask me)

Now the storyline, which is were all my issue lie. First it took about 50% until the mystery took off. And frankly most of the book until then was about Jayne's personal life. I found myself a bit disinterested in the book because of it and I kept thinking, when will the mystery start?
When it did, I was totally invested and had to keep reading. Because it was a good mystery. There are quite a few twists and turns, while I guessed some, I didn't really see one coming. The mystery left me satisfied. Which is the reason I rounded up. Because essentially I love this series for it's mysteries.
Which leads me to the romance aspect. I was not a fan in the third installment. And frankly it hasn't changed that much. Except I did like the outcome. However, I didn't like how Jayne got there. It was rather disappointing, because frankly I wanted her to make the choice, rather than being left with that choice. I do like that she has always been honest, but her not making choices does annoy me. There lies the root of my problem with the book. I hope, that now things seem a bit more resolved it will not only stay like this. But I hope she finally makes the choice and invests into the man. I am all for his team, by the way. Was right from the first moment he was featured in the series.

Looking forward to next Jayne Frost mystery and hoping for some nice romance as well

I have raved about this series to everyone I know. Kristen Painter is an insta-buy for me but this was a very disappointing book. Very unrealistic. I find it hard to believe two suitors put up with her dating both of them - without sex for over a year - and then....ugh. I won't spoil it but I will just say I found my attention drifting. Waaaaay too much detail about her food intake and very sultry descriptions of sugary meals...but nothing close to it in relation to her romances. Once again the mystery's a bit flat but I so adore Painter's storytelling that I kind of ignore obvious problems. Jayne is now too perfect and beautiful and it's not conducive to much angst. If things were not so perfect for her it would be easier to, er, swallow.
I am in love however with Spyder and wish my cats could talk just like him. He's the best male lead in this series!

Perhaps I have reader-PTSD from too many Sarah J. Mass books, but I hate when romantic interests switch mid-series. Can't we pick a significant other and explore life happily alongside them? I realize that's not exceptionally realistic, but clearly (considering my reading history) I'm not in this for the realism. I get enough of that every day.

The two shucked boyfriends seemed more like servants than dating partners...? And this girl has basically everything - it's difficult to identify with her. Hopefully the addition of Sinclair will stabilize the romance portion of the series. Perhaps they can conquer a doughnut crisis together?

Fourth in the Jayne Frost magical realism mystery series (a spin-off from the Nocturne Falls Universe where it slides into 8.1) revolving around Jayne Frost, a winter elf managing Santa's Workshop in Nocturne Falls, Georgia.

My Take
Oh, yeah, Lark is all about herself. Sinclair, now, he's a sweetie, and I don't just mean his doughnuts! Yep, the man is a sweet talker and persuasive.
". . . word on the street is you're a top consumer of sweets in this town, and I was afraid if you hated my doughnuts, it could be bad for business."
Hmmm, I'm trying to visualize a costume of snow at midnight. Then there's the jewel heist, and everyone in town is being taken to the station. And even more events that are so unexpected.

Painter is using first person protagonist point-of-view from Jayne's perspective so we hear all about her angst over Lark, Cooper's problems, her own suddenly dateless issue . . . and this new thrill in her life.

Hey, we get to meet Jayne's mother and aunt! It's good and bad as there is more than one betrayal in this tale as well as an unexpected break-up. Whoa.

Despite all the action and the characters' personalities shining forth, the pace is easy with some emotional ups-and-downs.

A fun read and not to be missed if you're interested in the Nocturne Falls Universe!

The Story
Oh, man. Lark is here to set up the final details to deejay Elenora Ellingham's Black and Orange ball . . . and apologizing to Jayne for events eleven years in the past.

Jayne's not sure she can forgive her old frenemy, but she's trying, even through that chilling event at the Black and Orange Ball that puts Jayne at odds with the powers that be.

She knows she’s on thin ice, but she’s determined to crack the caper.

The Characters
The sugar-lovin' Jayne Frost manages Santa's Workshop Toy Store in Nocturne Falls. She's also the Winter King's daughter, Kris Kringle's niece, and a winter elf. Spider is her talking cat.

Klara Frost is Jayne's mother and the Winter Queen; Jack Frost is her father. Martha Kringle is her aunt and married to Santa. Yep, he's her uncle.

Cooper Sullivan is a fireman and a summer elf who had dated Jayne in college. Greyson Garrett is a vampire who does odd jobs helping out various supernaturals around town: part-time deputy, Vampire on Duty, and super-secret missions for Lucian. Both of them are dating Jayne.

Lark Bramble, a.k.a. DJ Ice Queen, is the former best friend who betrayed Jayne and Cooper. Her parents are toy scouts. Lance LaFlame, an elf, is Lark's lover and her assistant who runs the scenes behind her shows.

Nocturne Falls, Georgia, is . . .
. . . a small town where everyone knows everyone's business, and they celebrate Halloween 365 days per year. It's also a town that's mostly owned by a vampire family, the Ellinghams. Elenora is the matriarch with three grandsons: Sebastian, Hugh, and Julian. The Heart of Dawn is Elenora's latest jewelry purchase. Hugh is married to Delaney who runs Delaney's Delectables ( The Vampire's Mail Order Bride , 1). Alice Bishop is a powerful witch and Elenora's secretary.

Santa's Workshop
Juniper Trembley (she's dating Pete the fae pharmacist), Buttercup, the part-time only Rowley, and Kip, who's "dating some chick who works at Insomnia". Vale Bright and Crystal Holliday are the temporary employees Jayne's dad sent to help. Santa's Bag is a miracle of freight handling, a portal directly to the North Pole.

Titus Merrow, a werewolf, is the fire chief. Hank Merrow, his brother, is the sheriff and married to Ivy ( The Werewolf Meets His Match , 2). They have a son, Charlie. Birdie Caruthers is their aunt as well as the receptionist for the sheriff's department. Birdie, the unofficial mayor of Nocturne Falls, is also dating Jack Van Zant. Jenna Blythe is one of the deputies; she's a valkyrie and Tessa's sister.

Sinclair "Sin" Crowe is a necromancer who owns Zombie Doughnuts. Two of his specialties are opposites. The good is a Dr Prepper doughnut while the bad is that touch of death. Sugar is Sin's white cat. Pandora Williams is engaged to Prof Cole Van Zant (Jack's son). Lucian Dupree is a retired grim reaper who owns Insomnia, a supernaturals-only nightclub. Chet, a bearshifter, is one of the doormen. Monalisa Devlin, a Will-o’-the-Wisp, and Ivan "Van" Tsvetkov, a dragonshifter ( The Dragon Finds Forever , 7), are off in Vermont.

Willa Iscove, a lapidus fae, runs the town jewelry store, Illusions ( The Gargoyle Gets His Girl , 3). Jasper is her cat. Nick Hardwin, a gargoyle who fills in as a part-time deputy, is Willa's boyfriend. Bridget Merrow, a werewolf, owns Howler's, a popular bar and grill. Mia is one of the servers. Mummy's Diner is fabulous for their breakfasts. The perspicacious Arty is one of their servers. Café Claude. The Poisoned Apple is a pub. The Hallowed Bean is across the street from Delaney's shop. Melworth's Kitchens and More is preferred by the more reputable construction companies. Mrs D's Dairy Barn sells ice cream. The Pinehurst Inn is more low-rent than high class.

Tempus Sanders, a.k.a. the Sandman, had been a feature in Miss Frost Saves the Sandman , 3. Shimmer is magical snow that disappears. Wouldn't we love to have that kind on our paved surfaces! Ada is a ghost in a long flannel nightgown and sleeping cap.

The Cover and Title
The cover has a light and bright blue sky background with a frame of huge snowflakes encircling the central snow globe that holds the pink Heart of Dawn, standing up in a slope of snow. Spider is to the left and right up against the base that provides the series info while Jayne with her long blue hair draping her shoulders. It's a bright yellow sundress she's wearing, her right arm holding a deep royal blue coat. The title is at the top in a fanciful font all white with a fuzzy black shadow. Below that is a deep gray bit of universal series info. Below the snow globe is the author's name in a white serif with a darker shadow. Below that is an info blurb in white with a fuzzy black background.

The title finds that Miss Frost Cracks a Caper is so convoluted.

Well we met mum and Aunt in this one it's a shame that the night took such a turn. The ball was fun until the end. I liked seeing more from the characters in this and how the relationships are going. I like the fact that the characters are different like how Sinclair had some unusual necro powers which was nice. I liked the mystery and how they got the jewellery back.

This is my new favorite book from this series. These books keep getting better as they go. Miss Frost Cracks a Caper is book 4 in the series.

I loved almost everything about this book from beginning to end. It was captivating and I couldn't wait to solve the crime. The only thing that I didn't really care for is how the author wrote the story for Cooper and Grayson, especially toward the end. It was pretty contrived.

The same narrator reads this book as the prior books in the series. I'm not fond of some of her character voices, such as Juniper's, but she does a good job overall. She reads a bit slow but once I speed it up, it doesn't matter.

I give this book 5 stars and I highly recommend the series.

The language and the cozy mystery in this book is ok but are you kidding me? The 3rd person? The romance line becomes extremely annoying. I wonder if in the last 3 books it is going to be better.
Overall I'm starting to get addicted to the series. The festive part is definitely nice and the level of coziness is also high. Feels like a cup of hot cocoa on a chilly day.

Jayne's college roommate (who broke her and Cooper up) comes to town to DJ a big ball and Jayne is trying to be adult about it. But it gets difficult when both of Jayne's dates end up cancelling but she soon meets a new guy who takes her. But then something goes wrong at the ball and Jayne feels responsible to find the culprit.

So we’ve been following this love triangle for two or three books. And now she meet a third guy when the two others were out of town. And she began dating him without telling either of them. There was a kiss no sex. It just felt wrong even if they agree to keep it casual and no commitments. Like she was cheating on her two guys.

By the last chapter Greyson the vampire found out and made her choose between him and the new guy Sinclair the necromancer. Necromancers are dangerous to vampires and he didn’t like it. She said she wasn’t going to stop seeing the new guy. So they broke up. She said while her heart hurt that she had no claim on Greyson because she was also dating Cooper. They agreed to still be friends.

And Cooper was away dealing with his sick Mom who was in the hospital. He emailed her and said he was staying with his mom- out of town- because she wasn’t progressing the way they hoped. That he doesn’t plan on coming back for a long time. He broke up with her because he felt that they were not on a path to forever. They agreed to be friend also. FYI he never knew about the new guy and she didn’t tell him.

Soooo she’s known Sin for a very short time and is already falling in love with him. I do like Sin and I’m super glad the love triangle is no more. But I wish it hadn’t felt like she went behind their backs with Sin. She didn’t even seem all that upset I think she shed a few tears. This whole thing overpowered the mystery of the book and ruined it for me. I love this world and I’ll look forward to the next book. Hopefully this guy is the one for Jayne and no more romance drama especially since these book don’t involve around romance it’s about the mystery.

I love Jayne Frost! In this book, Jayne ends up dating THREE guys...and solves another mystery. Early on, I thought I knew how the story was going to go, but what I really love about Kristen Painter is that she surprises me every time! Another EXCELLENT book!

This is the 4th book in the Nocturne Falls adjacent series (I say adjacent because it isn't so much a spin-off to me, but a series of new stories following one main set of characters as opposed to the regular NF books which is a new couple each novel and all can be read as stand alones).   As followers of my reviews know I don't give spoilers but this is one time where I REALLY want to ... but don't worry ... I won't.  Let me just say that those people following this series will not be disappointed.  We have really hit a turning point in Jayne's romantic life, and I LOVE IT!

These stories are just great escape reads.  Nocturne Falls is by far my number 1 fictional town that I would choose to move to.  If you haven't started these books yet I would definitely recommend starting with books 1.  Fans of the series already? Jump right in! You won't be disappointed.

An easy 5 stars from me and I know I am always saying this but this is definitely my favorite book in this series so far.  It is  SINfully delicious, like a perfect donut. (When you read the book you will know why that is amusing me so much especially as yes this is a cozy mystery so it is a clean read!! Bet your wheels are turning now aren't they!)

I get it, we’re supposed to hate Jayne, is that it? Because as a main character she’s one of the most vain, thoughtless, selfish, entitled, egotistical, juvenile, person ever. After stringing this stupid love triangle along for four books (almost 2 years in book time) Jayne meets and instantly falls in love with a third when her first two “boyfriends” conveniently are unable to take her to the Halloween ball. You immediately know something was coming when Jayne in her inner thoughts early in the book started thinking that thinks were “off” or “distant” in her relationship with the first two guys, never mind that they are dealing with (a) a family crisis and (b) a work issue, because you know, it’s not all about HER!! 🙄🙄🙄. Anyway, her former BFF who betrayed her and Cooper comes to town, Jayne of course is going to be the bigger person and “forgive” her and that all leads to disaster at the ball. Jayne’s penchant for believing she’s a better investigator than the actual cops (entitlement), demanding they release a witness, intruding on crime scenes etc: 🤬🤬🤬, I almost wished at one point she got the death touch so she could learn a lesson and grow up. Hopefully she’ll mature in future books now that the love triangle is over

When Jayne Frost’s ex-best friend (Lark) shows up in Nocturne Falls apologizing for having broken Jayne up from the love of her life back in college and wanting to make peace between them, Jayne proves herself to be both too kind and too naive to be the winter court princess Painter has described. She goes out of her way to not nix Lark’s chance of being DJ at the Black and Orange Ball and in doing so, sort of makes herself responsible for the criminal acts that occur at the party. It was totally unnecessary, but I think Painter can be forgiven as there would not have been a story without this bit of stupidity on Jayne’s part.

Throw in that Jayne’s two boyfriends both have to bail on her for the ball and you have the excuse to introduce a third love interest for Jayne – a necromancer who makes his living baking tasty treats at Zombie Donuts. Jayne is immediately smitten and the reader is left to wonder if Painter is going to further complicate the princess’ love life or is getting ready to break off the cutesy love triangle of the first three books.

The mystery – theft of a lot of important and pricey jewelry –only starts about halfway through the book and is more interesting for the problems the thefts cause Jayne than for the problem itself. All in all, this is an okay addition to the series, but far from its best.

3.5 stars. Maybe more.

Well well, Lark is back and making a pest of herself. She’s got Jane to vouch for her despite all the evil she did 11 years ago to the relationship Jane has with Coop. Now a terrible crime has been committed and Jane feels responsible. With a new guy taking her to the ball she’s just getting to know him and she doesn’t have Grayson to sneak in and out of situations with, and no one wants her investigating the incident, so Jane is taking quite the risk to clear her name and maybe Larks. Things are definitely not business as usual, but this new guy is awful cute!

This interesting read and certainly took up my attention when I had intended to do other things, so it must be pretty enticing. These are sweet stories and while there are occasions where the foreshadowing is a little too thick, that you feel like you’ve been smacked in the face with it, there are enough twists to help make it worth while.

Always a fun series. However, Jayne needs to get her life in order. She is fast on the way to end up alone.

I really enjoyed this book but I’m finding that the reader is making Jayne whine just a little too much.
