A fantastic book to buy and keep on your shelf for reference. This book explores the reality of AI, revealing that it's not here to replace humans but to support them, much like a 'super-friendly assistant'. The author points out that AI is an excellent helper as long as the user knows how to ask and verify the results. I found the writing style and the layout of the book perfect for a better understanding of how AI works (including new concepts for me, such as 'tokens' and 'LLM'), presented in a fun, easy-to-read style that made it easy to understand and enjoyable. One of my favourite features of the book is the reference to different tools/websites that can be used for AI on a plethora of subjects, from solving math problems, creating art, financial management, project management, and more. AI has been around for a long time, but now it's part of our lives in a big way, so this book is excellent at shedding light on the reality of what AI is and the tools to get the best from it.
I remember when the calculator came around and everyone was worried that we'd forget how to add and subtract (we did). Now AI will do all the thinking for you, dredging up facts, organizing, writing in formulaic ways, etc. Those who use it successfully can do all kinds of things faster and better than the rest of us, so we'll have to get used to it. This book breaks it down and shows kids what's happening. If kids get information best through bullet points and charts, it's especially useful. We need to adjust quickly because it's not going away. Already what, a few thousand new books are published every day? Perhaps this is one of them, but at least it does what it says.
