Falling in love with my father’s best friend wasn’t on my to-do list. Yes, he’s hot. Sure, I’ve been flirting with him since I was sixteen. Of course I’d be down for a little fun.
When Laiken begins returning my flirting, things get heated. It was supposed to be sexy fun and nothing more. We weren’t planning on making this a forever thing.
But falling in love isn’t a choice.
As it turns out, not everyone agrees and sometimes disapproval is loud, painful, and heartbreaking.

This is a LGBTQIA+ story with content not intended for those under 18 years of age due to graphic scenes and situations.
Crea lives in upstate New York with her dog and husband. She has been writing since grade school, when her second grade teacher had her class keep writing journals. She has a habit of creating secondary, and often time tertiary, characters that take over her stories. When she can't fall asleep at night, she thinks up new scenes for her characters to act out. This, of course, is how most of her meant-to-be-thrown-away characters tend to end up front and center - and utterly swoon-worthy! Don't ask her how many book boyfriends she has...
When not writing, Crea is an avid reader. Her TBR pile is several hundred books high (don't even look at her kindle wish list or the unread books on her tablet). Sometimes, she enjoys crafting; sometimes, exploring nature; sometimes, traveling. Mostly, she enjoys putting her characters on paper and breathing life into them. Oh, and sleeping. Crea loves to sleep!
I have to start by saying that I was really amused by Crea's foreword about this series being inspired by Stars Hollow. I loved that there was a side character called Taylor and that he was ridiculous, and that there was a Miss Patty, and Luke's Hardware 😂😂 I only watched Gilmore Girls for the first time when my son was a baby and I didn't know what to do with myself when he slept, and now it's one of the only shows that he'll happily sit and watch (we're SO team jess...and Dean is used as a textbook example of a walking red flag) so this was just funny to see.
ANYWAY, I really enjoyed the relationship between Laiken and Lie. I did think there was a little too much justification and over explanation about the fact that Laiken never looked at Lie in a sexual way until he was 20 though. I didn't need to know more than once, I believed the character and his intentions were good.
Lie is definitely an interesting character. I can't say I understand his obsession with his erection collection (personally I think they resemble naked mole rats, but hey, I'm Ace, what do I know!! 😂) but his friendship with Cash was so good, and I also enjoyed that he was given the space and opportunity to figure out what he wanted to do with his life. I always think it's crazy that we're supposed to somehow know exactly what it is that we want to do for the rest of our lives when we're only 18! I'm 38 and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up 😂
Laiken was my favourite character though. He's such a pillar of strength for Lie, and the way he defends their relationship and protects Lie so fiercely is everything you want to see. I especially loved how he went along with Lie's plan at the last town meeting of the book!
I really hated Lie's mum from the get go because of the way she was so passive aggressive with him about his appearance and the way he expressed himself - sit down, shut up! I was surprised though by just how vicious Lie's dad became when he found out they were together. I didn't see it coming at all - I only just started reading the Creaverse properly and I'm following the chronological timeline, but I have read Shiver, Starting Line, Project FU and DWL - and the way Nason became this hate filled person was genuinely shocking. I actually liked the way the book ended regarding this situation though because it made the story feel more real to me.
I'm definitely looking forward to Cash and Onyx getting a story (hopefully) and I wouldn't be mad to see Ben accidentally get lost at sea...dropped into a volcano...run over with an electric golf buggy... 😂😂😂
This story was not what I expected at all. It did surprise me in a very good way. The beginning was a bit slow in my opinion and I thought it wouldn't be a great novel, but oh boy was I wrong! I want to start off by saying that I fell in love with Kala. I wish it was real because it certainly sounded like a wonderful place to live. Lie had always had a crush on Laiken, since he was a teenager he just accepted what he felt would never be returned. He went to University and that didn't work out for him so he went back to Kala, the place he wanted to stay forever. And, of course, his crush on Laiken was still there. Laiken was such a great character. A hardworking man who loved his best friend and hence, tried to stay away from his son, but some things are inevitable. After Lie's return to the island Laiken found himself watching and thinking of Lie as a man, something that had never happened before. Their relationship was beautiful, it felt like two pieces of a puzzle fitting together in the right places. The love that Laiken felt for Lie showed in the way he accepted the younger man's wishes and desires. They couldn't stop their feelings and just had to hide their relationship. I loved all the moments they spent together, how they understood each other and how their love flourished as the days passed. At times they forgot they were hiding their feelings from Lie's dad and I suffered for them a few times when they were about to be caught. I have mixed feelings about Lie's dad's behaviour. I understood where he came from, after all it was his son and his best friend, with an age gap, having a relationship. I can't blame him for reacting the way it did. I also understood Lie and Laiken's sadness regarding Lie's dad, it was hard for them to accept the nastiness and cruelty of the man's words. Like I said, I'm not sure whether to despise Lie's dad or comfort him, but I admit it was perfectly portrayed by the author as a father in that situation. I absolutely loved this book, it was such a wonderful surprise and I can't wait to read the next one. Cash's story is going to be very interesting.
I will start by saying that while I knew I will like this book, I did not expect it to become one of my favs by Crea. I did not expect this especially since age gaps are not my favs. WOW. Just wow.
There are so many things I love about this book I don't even know where to start or if I will be able to voice everything that's going through my mind right now.
The characters? OMG, absolute perfection. Laiken is absolutely perfect, and Lie is right there with him. These two together are absolutely perfect together. You can tell while reading the book that they are soulmates. They were born on this planet to one day be together and love each other. There is no other way.
The stories flow was amazing, and I feel like I ( personally ) haven't read a book where the events were written quite like this. It was new for me and I discovered that I did not mind, I actually enjoyed it so much.
Being a father's best friend makes this book go into forbidden territory already, but tbh for me this was not the forbidden element ( * I will add the forbidden element at the end to avoid spoilers - I will pull a warning before just so you know where to stop reading ). I was expecting to be bothered by that, but NO, there was NO change. My only option apparently was to love this book, which I did, and do... I need it on my shelf and I need the audiobook so I can read it again, and again, and again.
Isle of Kala is a place that I always loved reading about in the other books by Crea. It is this utopic place that I wish existed in the real world ( or maybe it does but I am too poor to know about it? who knows? ). It is a place that always brings a level of comfort and freedom from the characters in this universe, so being on the other side in this book was awesome.
While in other books in the CreaVerse we get to experience Kala as this amazing resort, in this series we will get to experience it as a resident. As someone who lives there the residents of these islands live their lives just like we do. There is drama, there is fun to be had, they go to work, they love, they cry. Just like anyone else. They just do it in paradise, basically.
This story is powerful, imo from multiple reasons. Sure, some might argue that it is a romance book and bla bla, but I swear, the way this love story is written is just so beautiful. First of all I love how the smex is not the most important part, it is happening as part of life, and as part of the relationship ( don't get me wrong, it is still hot, hot ), but the focus is on the connection between the characters, the way their dynamic changes, how they adapt to this new reality of them being a couple. We get to witness how their love grows and becomes this indestructible thing that will shield both their hearts from the heartache that will come once their secret is out.
We get to have fun with these characters, stolen moments, fun with friends, we have a cameo in this one. The town meetings were absolutely deliciously funny. While reading the book I was waiting for those TM so we can get more tea.
This book also tackless the subject of friendship and boundaries. It talks about toxicity in relationships ( of any kind ) and how you respond while being on the spotlight.
As any other book, you can learn a lot between the pages of 'The way you Lie' and I can't wait to see more of the guys in Cash's book. I will be waiting for it.
There are many other things I want to say but... I don't want to spoil it for anyone.
This was a 5 star for me, no notes.
Now... I will say what the forbidden element is for me, so... if you do not want to know... stop here.
Spoiler.
Spoiler.
Spoiler.

The forbidden element imo is not only the fact that Laiken is Lie's father BF, it's the fact that Laiken has been in Lie's life since he was born. He helped his parents raise him. This is a topic that is heavily discussed in the book and I want to let you know that no gr00m1ng is involved. Lie is over 20, almost 21 when things start happening between them, and they also communicate about the forbidden aspect of this. Their story is absolutely beautiful and I highly recommend it. But if you think you might have an issue with what I just said, maybe sit this one out because I do not want anyone to tr@sh this book just because this detail made them uncomfortable and decided to ignore it.

I usually love Crea Reitan’s books, so I went into this one with high hopes—and for the most part, it delivered. Laiken and Lie had such a strong connection, and their chemistry was everything. I devoured the whole thing… until the ending. That part? It completely threw me. I’m still frustrated even after sleeping on it. The pain, the heartbreak—it hit me hard, but I really wanted some sort of closure or peace at the end, and instead I was left feeling angry and unsettled. It was such a good story, which makes it even harder to accept how it wrapped up.
Lie and Laiken’s relationship is definitely taboo. He’s the son of Laiken’s best friend, and that alone brings enough complications. Add the age gap and the secrecy, and it’s clear they were never going to have an easy ride. But that’s exactly what made this story so intense. The forbidden, the wrongness, the sneaking around—it all added to the tension and made their moments together feel even more electric.
The chemistry between them builds slowly, over years of flirty interactions, but once it shifts into something real, it hits hard. I appreciated how the story handled the timing—nothing happened until Lie was older and had found a bit of independence. It made their connection feel more grounded, not rushed or forced. Laiken’s guilt and hesitation added layers to the story, and watching them both wrestle with their feelings gave it emotional depth.
What really stood out was how Laiken never tried to change Lie. He accepted him, quirks and all, and fully supported the person Lie was becoming. Their dynamic was both sweet and passionate, and I loved how their relationship felt balanced despite the age difference. Lie’s friendship with Cash added a nice touch too—like he had someone in his corner no matter what.
The Isle of Kala is a whole vibe on its own. It’s been mentioned before in other books, but now we really get to see what makes it special. The sense of community, the small-town nosiness, the newsletter drama—it brought humor and charm to the story. And the fact that characters from other books pop in here and there made it even better.
There’s definitely a lot to love here—the setting, the tension, the emotional pull. But that cliffhanger ending? Brutal. I’m still not okay. I know we’re getting more from the series, and I’ll be there for it, especially for Cash’s story, but right now I’m still stuck in the ache this one left behind.

I have been looking forward to reading Lie and Laiken's story and didn't disappoint. 20 year old Lie has had a crush on his dad's best friend Laiken. After Lie's failed uni journey due to bullying, Laiken suddenly sees him as an adult and develops feelings for Lie, however he has a lot of conflicting feelings as he has been there all of Lie's life but they can't resist the chemistry and connection between each other despite know that they could lose Lie's dad when he finds out. It was sweet and emotional at times and full of chemistry. I enjoyed the side characters too.
The connection between Lie and Laiken is a shining example of love's transformative power. Together, they've overcome incredible obstacles, and their bond has been strengthened. While the family conflicts were saddening, their love emerged triumphant. Next, I'm looking forward to reading Cash's story.
I loved getting to go back to Kala! Laiken struggles to come to terms with his feelings for Lie - it's a forbidden relationship and neither wanted to lose an important person in their lives. However, ultimately, love finds a way and becomes insistent. Things aren't easy, but they support each other and are wonderful together. Can't wait for the next story!
I love that the Isle of Kala is finally getting its own series, after all the glimpses into the island chain we get throughout the For Puck's Sake series, and what a way to start it off.
Reitan had me from the start with age-gap, dad's best friend goodness, and then I dove into the book and lost hours reading about Laiken and Lie. Now, I know what some people are thinking - Dad's best friend romance, it can feel a little weird with them having known each other the entirety of the younger person's life. I'll preface this with nothing happens until Lie is 20 - and this is a pivotal part of the narrative, too. So yes, probably mild spoiler, but I also know that this dynamic could concern a lot of readers.
Laiken and Lie's story wasn't an easy one; they truly fought to get the happily ever after they finally reached. But the journey to get there was worth the fight for both of them. I love that Laiken loved Lie for exactly who he was, and not once tried to change the quirky man. The support that Lie received through everything was amazing, and you could tell that all Laiken ever wants is Lie's happiness.
The tension and chemistry between the two is palpable, and when they finally get their moment, it was so good to read. Reitan continues to work magic blending the forbidden, the taboo, with the sweet and the heartfelt.
Kala is honestly a place I wish was real, and I wish I could live in; the inclusivity, the support and the friendship make it sound like such a comfortable place to live, where you can just be yourself. The small-town vibes it gives off is amazing, and I found myself cackling at some of the hijinks that happened, displayed at either the town meetings or the weekly newsletter.
I loved the inclusion of Deryke as Laiken's friend, once more cementing that the Creaverse is one beautiful soap-opera of connections. The friendship between Lie and Cash was also so much fun; two men supporting each other no matter what - and with the way this one ended, I can't wait for the next book; that cliffhanger has me on the edge of my seat.
Thank you to the author for the eARC opportunity. These are my honest thoughts that I have provided voluntarily.
Crea Reitan’s "The Way You Lie" is a poignant exploration of love, desire, and the heartbreak that can weave through relationships, especially when society threatens to tear them apart.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of Isle of Kala, (which has appeared in several of the “For Puck Sake”) these two have had a will they won’t they/ flirty moments for many years.
The story revolves around Elijah (Lie) who finds himself drawn to his father's best friend, Laiken. This attraction, built on years of flirtation since adolescence, evolves into something much deeper and more potent.
And Laiken, his best friend’s son (oh dear! That’s not going to go down well, I can tell you) he’s the bartender on the island. He loves the lifestyle and the island, he loves his best friend Nason, but the feelings he has for Lie, isn’t suppose to be there, he feels guilty…..
What sets "The Way You Lie" apart is its raw honesty. The story doesn't shy away from the internal conflicts faced by both characters as they wrestle with the implications of their love. The author captured the essence and the tension that comes with falling in love, particularly when the relationship is frowned upon. The highs of their connection made me smile, and the moments of doubt and pain had me sobbing 😭
The authors writing is so engaging, it made it so easy for me to imagine myself on that island, to witness this couples love, and the pain it brings them too. Oh…. And I need to see Lie’s crochet collection 😉 (IYKYK) 😂
I loved how we get to see a few characters from previous books. I also loved how Lie and Cash were there for one another (almost like brothers)
In summary, Crea Reitan's "The Way You Lie" is a compelling and beautifully crafted love story that balances romance with the harsh realities of societal disapproval. It’s a tale about desire, the pain of heartbreak, and the quest for love amid adversity. This was an emotional roller coaster (chocolate/tissues and a blanket will be needed!)
This novel is a must read for anyone seeking a heartfelt exploration of love that challenges the status quo.
In this universe of series from Crea, the Isle of Kala has been its own main character. We’ve visited the islands so many times and have met super interesting characters. And I’m so glad to see that these characters are getting their own books! We are kicking this off with Laiken and Elijah aka Lie. For those who are familiar with Crea’s books, you might remember them from a few books. Specifically from The Crease. Now we get to back up from that time to see how these two got together and what exactly happened. Laiken has been in Lie’s life since the day he was born. He is the son of Laiken’s best friend, Nathan. For a very long time, Laiken has only seen Lie as just that. His best friend’s child. But when Lie returns from college, suddenly Laiken sees him as someone completely new. An adult home and figuring out his life. It’s the first time Laiken realizes he is attracted to Lie and he knows he will never be able to do anything about it. It crosses so many lines. Meanwhile, Lie has flirted with Laiken since he was a teenager and realized he liked guys. He knew Laiken would never take it seriously, but lately he notices Laiken looking back at hime. And the moment these two cross the line and kiss, it’s all over for them. They know they can never be together for real or let Nathan know they dared be more. But before they know it, they are falling for one another. Hard. And it’s only a matter of time until everything is revealed. It was really great to get their story after getting pieces of it in other books. We know things blow up but watching these two fall in love is very sweet. They know what it will look like to others seeing them get together, but they both know the truth. This wasn’t planned nor was it ever a thing until now. We also get a piece of a few others like Cash and Onyx and that ending has me demanding for their book to come faster! Can’t wait to see what other stories get told!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Way You Lie is the first book of Crea Reitan’s Isle of Kala series and is Lie and Laiken’s story.
I’m not really a massive fan of an age gap romance but Crea Reitan has very much become a favourite author of mine, so I was very happy to give this one a go.
Lie has had a crush on Laiken, his dad’s best friend since he turned 16 and has been harmlessly flirting with him ever since, although Laiken has never reciprocated. When a 20 year old Lie returns to Kala after a disastrous time at uni, Laiken begins to see him very differently and even though he knows he shouldn’t, he starts returning Lie’s flirting and their relationship deepens into so much more.
The journey between these 2 was definitely not an easy one. Laiken’s feelings were totally conflicted, he knew to protect his life long friendship with Lie’s dad he should stay away, but the more time they spent together made it so much harder for them to resist. I really did love seeing the relationship between Lie and Laiken unfold. Lie knew exactly how to get Laiken riled up with his teasing and flirting, it brought out Laiken’s possessive side and the chemistry between them definitely sizzled. I loved Laiken’s character, he accepted Lie for exactly who he was and the undying support he showed him when he was still working out what to do with his life was so freaking adorable.
This story was definitely not without drama, there was some very emotional, heartbreaking moments towards the end but the love Laiken and Lie had for each other never faltered, their bond was just too strong to be broken.
Cash and Lie’s friendship was such a great addition to this story, Cash was such an incredible support system for Lie, the acceptance and the way they were always there for one another was just perfect. The cliffhanger we got at the end of this book was so unexpected, it now has me desperately wanting Cash and Onyx’s story and it can’t come soon enough!!
Reitan had me hooked from the very first page with the irresistible combination of an age-gap romance and the dad’s best friend trope. But what truly kept me turning pages for hours was the emotional depth and chemistry between Laiken and Lie.
Yes, this is a “dad’s best friend” romance, and I know that dynamic can raise eyebrows. But Reitan handles it with care and intention—nothing romantic happens until Lie is 20, and that boundary is not just respected but woven meaningfully into the story. It’s a pivotal part of their journey, and it adds to the emotional weight of their eventual connection. Laiken and Lie’s love story isn’t easy. It’s messy, complicated, and full of heart. But that’s what makes their happily ever after so satisfying. I adored how Laiken never tried to change Lie—he loved him for exactly who he was, quirks and all. And Lie’s growth, supported by Laiken’s unwavering care, was beautiful to witness. The chemistry? Off the charts. The tension? Palpable. And when they finally come together, it’s everything you hope for—tender, passionate, and earned. The setting of Kala is a character in itself. I wish it were real. The inclusivity, the warmth, the small-town charm—it’s a place where people are free to be themselves, and the community support is heartwarming. The town meetings and newsletter hijinks had me laughing out loud more than once. Age-gap + dad’s best friend + small-town charm = hooked from page one. Laiken and Lie’s story is emotional, messy, and so worth the ride and their chemistry is hot.
Crea has gone and done it again, but I’m not surprised! I love the world she has created and I never want to leave! I’m so glad the Isle of Kala is getting its own series. This was a perfect start!
Lie has known Laiken his entire life, his dad, Nason, is Laiken’s best friend. But to be clear, nothing happened between the two or was even thought about until Lie was an adult. Lie doesn't know what he wants to do with his life (same buddy, same) because of this he has an issue keeping a job, he just can’t seem to find something that he vibes with. At the suggestion of his dad he ends up bartending with Laiken. The two start spending more time together and Lie isn’t shy about flirting with Laiken. But what happens when Laiken starts flirting back? Sparks fly, of course!
The connection and the chemistry between the two was everything. You could literally feel what they were feeling. Laiken loved and supported Lie just the way he was and honestly the world would be a better place if there were more people like that. When everything is turned upside down, their relationship and faith in one another doesn't waver. I’m still a little heartbroken for Lie and Laiken, they both lost an important person in their lives. But in the end they had each other's love.
The friendship Lie had with Cash was perfect. The way they were there for one another and supported each other through everything was the sweetest. And with the way this book ended, I’m so ready to see what happens next in this series!
I received a copy from the author and am voluntarily sharing my honest opinion.
I love that every time I pick up a Crea Reitan book I never know what I’m going to get. Sometimes sweet and spicy, sometimes angsty, sometimes funny and always compelling. This one was a great mix of everything she does best. We started out sweet and spicy. Lie & Cash’s friendship is adorable. They are so supportive of each other. The flirting between Laiken & Lie is top notch and things between them heat up rapidly. Then around 70% BAM, the rug was pulled from under me and things took a real turn. This was the third act drama I did not see coming! Yes Lie and Laiken knew what they were doing was risky and could cause some hurt feelings but I never anticipated things to go so far. It really broke my heart for them knowing everything they lost and the fact that the person they thought loved them was probably never the person they thought they knew.
I tend to jump about a bit with Crea’s books so while I know these characters do make appearances in other stories I had only met them briefly in the prequel novella set on the Isla of Cala. I enjoyed coming into this not knowing much about them.
I must admit I was completely sucked in by Cash & Onyx almost as much as Lie & Laiken. I’m fascinated by what might have been going on with them behind the scenes and can’t wait to find out more when they get their own book

Forbidden romance Sneaking around Father's best friend Age gap Town hall meetings
Oh my this new series is great
We all know and love Kala So a new series based solely there is fantastic
This was wonderful
“My gaze drops to his crotch. “You’re going to wrap that thing in a bow and let me ride it like a stallion while you buck and try to throw me off, but I’m holding on so tightly that you can’t shake me. I’ll win awards. Medals. I’ll be written about in sonnets. Right?”
I adored how Lailen chose Lie, not for a moment did her ever waiver once he truly made up his mind
He was so supportive of Lie in every way
“No matter what happens,” Laiken says, “I’m not going to change my mind about you. About us.”
I was shocked at how Nason could not see past his own rage. It was so sad
“Elijah is mine. I’ll fight for him when that day comes. The countdown is on, even if the number isn’t visible. When we reach the end, I’ll fight to make sure that he’s mine when the dust clears.”
↓↓ I love pretty much anything that Crea writs and add in the age gap and forbidden aspect and I.WAS.SOLD. Let me preface this by saying Laiken has known Lie his entire life, but never ever saw or acted on anything until he was a grown adult.
When Isle of Kala has been introduced previously, I fell in love with not only the idea of it the island being so inclusive but the support and love that everyone has for each other. Diving in deeper with the people and their stories brings me so much joy.
These two had so much tension, both pining for each other but thinking that it would never happen. Things heated up pretty quickly but honestly, it worked for them.
There was a massive age gap but you wouldn't be able to tell. These two just fit together so perfectly. I loved watching them fall love but I hated the fall out that came from it. Lie lost his parents and Laiken his best friends, my heart hurt for them.
I loved Cash so much. Best friend and such an incredible support for Lie. His book is next in the series and with the way this one ended, I can't wait to see how everything plays out.

"Laiken has always been my family. He’s always been one of my very favorite people in the entire world." - Elijah (Lie)
"It’s not me and my best friend’s son right now. This is me and Lie. A man I’m completely mesmerized by." - Laiken
Elijah & Laiken are very comfortable with each other, and Laiken sees what's important for Elijah and always makes sure to listen and to give him that. They can fully be themselves with each other.
Laiken & Elijah have a secret, forbidden relationship that takes place on Kala, the place where Elijah has lived his whole life (I really love reading about Kala and how open and accepting they are). Laiken is best friends with Elijah's dad, Nason, and they are neighbors. Elijah has a best friend named Cash, and I'm really excited to read his book. Cash and Elijah talked a lot about who they are interested in, and I love reading about their friendship.
I personally didn't really feel connected to this book; it felt a bit out of nowhere that they started liking each other. I understand that they've known each other for a very long time and that they built up a connection, but I felt like their story was missing something. That's why I gave it 3 stars.
I fairly certain the author ripped my heart to pieces and then put it back together with this one. It’s a dad’s best friend and I have to say I adore both Lie and Laiken, and I feel so bad for Lie with what he goes through with his mother, and then later his father when he finds out about their relationship. Laiken also loses his best friend which is hard for his as well, so really I feel bad for both of them.
For me I’m loving this new series. We’ve been to Kala a few times in various books by the author, but this time we get to see a different side of it. The side of the residents living there, and not those just visiting on vacations and such. I love be whole idea of the islands of Kala, a space for those who fall under the lgbtqia umbrella to be their true selves without judgement, or at least that’s the main idea of the island. Though as I found I this book, there seem to be some who still can’t quite get behind the whole letting people be who they are without judgement.
The ending while not the perfect outcome for Lie and Laiken because of certain relationships deteriorating, it’s the best for them both for now. And that last bit, dang…I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book with what I can only assume will be Cash’s story.
The Way You Lie is the first book in Crea's NEW SERIES featuring the Isle of Kala and its residents. It gives very small town vibes and I'm not ashamed to say I laughed out loud a few times. If you've read her other books, you may have seen Kala already as our favorite hockey guys often go there on vacation. To say I am excited about this new series is an understatement! I've been wanting to read more about this dream island I so wish would actually exist. So in this book, we follow Elijah and Laiken who we already met in The Crease. We obviously already knew they ended up together but now we get their story, which is honestly a little heart breaking but so very good. Elijah is younger and a little lost in that he doesn't know what he wants to do with his life. Laiken is his father's best friend since forever who develops a crush on Elijah as he returns to Kala after going to college on the mainland. I'm sure you can see where this is going XD Secret rendezvous and covert looks while working at the bar, all of it (the heat, the feels and the gossips) in tropical island setting. You should give it a try!
I wish I could visit the Isle of Kala! Love the vibes, the inhabitants, the local color. This locale has been mentioned in this author's previous books here and there and I'm so glad a series is now being set here. After he tried out college off the island and didn't like it, Lie came home to figure himself out. Lie doesn't always stick out the jobs he tries out for too long, but no one gives him grief - everyone just lets him go try out something else. I love this kind of neighborly support! Lei has also had a longtime crush on his dad's best friend, who is of course, a good chunk older than Lie. Laiken doesn't want to hurt his BFF but he falls for Lie....There is internal conflict and also some external drama while things are worked out, but throughout it, Lie and Laiken are there for each other. This is a Crea book, so the spicy times are spicin'! I look forward to reading more books set on this lovely isle (especially Cash's book!).
I received a complimentary copy and am leaving this review voluntarily
Loved this story! I really appreciated how Laiken and Lie both entered the relationship with Nason’s feelings in mind, thinking it would just be a temporary fling. But what started as something casual quickly turned into something deep—something worth standing and fighting for.
It was heartbreaking to see what they went through with Nason. I truly thought he might come around, even just for Eli, his child. Still, the decision for Lie to move in with Laiken felt like a huge and meaningful step forward—beautifully written and so emotional.
I also loved getting a little peek behind the curtain with Cash and Oxny. I can’t wait for their full story—it’s going to be so good.
Isle Kala is such a lovely, special place. I love that it’s portrayed as a space where people can simply be themselves. This series does an amazing job exploring the lives of its LGBTQIA+ residents, capturing both their love stories and what it means to find a true sense of home.
Let’s start by saying this is the ultimate summer treat Crea could have given us! This is Gilmore girls on a tropical island with an age gap/forbidden storyline that has you melting. I loved it! Lie (Elijah) has been flirting with his dad’s best friend Laiken. And where Laiken used to think this was cute, after Lie has been away at college for a while and returns. He suddenly isn’t the kid he was when he left. Laiken sees him in a completely different light, and even though he shouldn’t, he can help but fall for this forbidden man.
The flirting game in this was amazing, the way Lie would be tempting Laiken with his backside... We all should take notes. When Lie’s dad found out about them, that was the drama with a capital D. But the quiet determination of Laiken was so beautiful, he could not give up a love like this, not even for the man who has been by his side for most of his life.
Now this story ends and does it end! That last scene just has you craving more. I can’t wait to see what’s next for the Isle of Kala.
This story is exceptionally written! First, we have an age gap. Then, we have the dad’s best friend! We know Laiken has been a part of Lie’s life since the day he was born. What the author clearly portrays is that there was never any attraction on Laiken’s end until Elijah came home from college in the States. At that point, he’s in his 20s. He might have left as a kid in Laiken’s eyes, but he came home as a man.
The connection between these two characters is undeniable and continues to grow the more they hang out. When they start working together and Lie starts getting room numbers, all bets are off—and possessive Laiken comes out!
I’m upset that Elijah’s dad turns ugly, and I hope that relationship starts to mend in the future. I love the Isle of Kala from the Puck Boy series, so getting a story from a resident of Kala feels like getting backstage passes—plus, we get to dive into all the drama island life brings!

This is the first book in Crea Reitan’s Isle of Kala series, but it’s part of a larger world. The author’s note states that Lie and Laiken were seen in another book and mentions circumstances surrounding their story that occur four years after the end of this book. It was fine to read on its own, but know that it is part of a larger world.
The Isle of Kala is as much a character as the people. Both Laiken, and Lie and his family moved there years prior, they live next door to each other, and Laiken has known Lie’s father, Nason, since they were children. The island is also a resort that is LGBT friendly and the residents are sheltered from the larger world in a lot of ways.
The Isle of Kala has been one of my favorite places in Crea Reitans books. It is a place were everyone is accepted and can live and love the way they want. We have met Lie and Laiken in other books but I was so excited to get their backstory and see how they fell in love. This age gap forbidden love story was so sweet but also heartbreaking. I enjoyed all aspects of the journey these two invoked upon giving in to their feelings and falling in love. Lie has had struggles with people accepting him even his, own mother didn't seem supportive but his father has always been on his side. Laiken has always been close with Lie since he is best friends with his dad. As the story moves forward we truly see how these two are soul mates and how beautiful their love is the bond and chemistry was solid from day one even with obstacles trying to hold them back. Another truly beautiful book by Crea Reitan. I was given this book as an ARC for my honest review.
I adored everything about Laiken and Lie together. I fell in love with island life on Kala. With Lie and his bestie, Cash, who is more like a brother given the way they understand and accept each other. Cash, who doesn’t discourage Lie’s feelings for Laiken despite the age gap and the fact that he’s besties with Lie’s parents. Laiken isn’t unaware of Lie’s attraction, but he never saw Lie as an adult until Lie returned from college, his spirit a little more tarnished and abraded by the outside world, determined to make a life on Kala. Lie hasn’t found his place/calling yet, and his parents encourage him to try working with Laiken at the bar, which means they’re spending more time together. I love that their relationship flourishes and Laiken supports Lie’s interests and who he is as a person. I hate that they have to hide their love, knowing Lie’s parents will lose their minds. Like so many of the author’s secondary characters, I’m caught and dying for more. Now I need Cash’s story!
The Way You Lie is a small town/island age gap romance in which Lie and Leiken finally decide to act on their mutual feelings of attraction after Lie returns home after giving college a try. Their biggest obstacle is that Leiken is best friends with Lie's father.
I absolutely loved watching the romance unfold between Lie and Leiken and the total support that Leiken gives to Lie - between finding a job that he loves and that it's okay to feel all the things he's feeling when their world gets turned upside down. I really enjoyed getting to read about island life and the things that go on to keep the islands running for both the residents and the guests. I thought the author handled a lot of heavy subjects really well. I'm definitely looking forward to reading about the other characters in the book as the series continues.
Thank you to Chaotic Creatives for the advanced readers copy.
This book is absolutely wonderful just like I knew it would be. Crea Reitan has once again bought a whole new place to life. The Island of Kala has now received its own unique stories. This made up Island 🏝️ is absolutely beautiful. Just to be able to go to a place and just be. The residents are on their way to their own story. This First book in this series focuses on Laiken and Elijah/Lie. Laiken is the best friend to Lie’s dad Nason. After being bullied at a Texas college, Lie comes back home. The two, Laiken and Elijah, have started a small attraction between each other, but it eventually turns into something more. Together they navigate through the disrespect from Nason and his wife, among dealing with life itself. Crea did an amazing job with the writing of everything. It’s a 5 star ⭐️ rating without question.❤️💜
Dads. Best. Friend. That should be enough motivation to read this book without knowing these two characters. We have seen snippets of these two characters and their relationship in other books by this author.
Laiken and Lie have always been in each others lives, well since Lie was born at least. Lie has always flirted and teased, but it's not until one summer that Laiken notices and responds.
These two do not have an easy road, but they are determined to stand by each other through anything. My heart broke for Lie at the end and I wish it could've gone differently, but that's not how it always goes.
And gah the ending! The teasing! I cannot wait for the next one.
I received an advance review copy, and this is my honest review.
