A book release party at a local bookstore is interrupted by the arrival of a police officer announcing a man was murdered on Bowen Island, located fewer than two miles from Chris Landrum’s adopted home on Folly Beach, South Carolina. Even before the identity of the victim is known, the retired bureaucrat’s best friend and self-proclaimed private detective Charles Fowler decides it’s their responsibility to catch the killer.
To complicate the seemingly impossible task, the two amateur detectives suspect the death is connected to a fifty-year-old theft of gold and jewels valued in the millions and believe the treasure is buried on Bowen Island near the iconic Bowens Island Restaurant. Their search for the killer intensifies when an acquaintance of Chris and Charles, who happens to be the victim’s neighbor, is killed. Now there is no doubt it’s up to them to catch the murderer; the problem becomes how to do it without becoming the next victims.
Another Folly Beach mystery hits it out of the park. While I didn't think there was any way to up his writing game, Bill Noel has accomplished just that. This is a smooth ride through twists and turns that keep the reader constantly engaged to find what will happen next. He's changed up landscape just enough to bring additional interest to the reader. A+++
Bill Noel never disappoints and this book is no exception. When a customer of Chris’s friend Barb is killed, Chris and Charles cannot help getting involved in the investigation. The story line is well done and the writing superb. It is always fun to spend an afternoon with Chris and his friends on Folly. My only regret is that I read it too quickly. So,I think that I will just read it again at a more leisurely pace!
Again, Bill Noel had delivered. I like the new characters he has introduced in this novel but I am getting tired of Charles and his predictability, in every situation.
Chris and Charles continue to entertain as they roam around Folly Beach and Charleston "detecting! And it would never be complete without a visit with Bob and Al. All great characters and a good story!
I always enjoy the Cris and Charles adventures. Being from SC I enjoy the setting and quirky characters. There almost seems to be a formula for the books but I enjoy them and will read more.
