I'm INCREDIBLY excited for this release!! The original Enemy's Keeper Book 2 was written ~10years ago before I wrote the prequel, The Thief's Keeper. Aelfric's life and backstory completely changed the rest of the series, and major rewriting & editing were needed. I spent 18 months doing just that... with the help of 25 beta readers who left thousands of comments and answered hundreds of questionnaires. I'm so GRATEFUL for all your help and enthusiasm!!

Toby's POV makes a debut in this book. It was completely unplanned. Like Aelfric, Toby wanted to tell his tale, and his perspective made the story so much richer.

I can't wait to share this story with everyone!

Well, now I am eager to find out what will happen in book three after experiencing all of the adventures that Aliwyn, Toby, Matthew, and Reiya face as they hold opposing allegiances in a war that isn't always as clear-cut as it's made out to be. I appreciate that Kyrie Wang takes on the challenge of telling part of the story from Matthew's perspective, which isn't the easiest feat when he is considered the enemy in the series. However, in entering his mind, it becomes apparent that his responses to somewhat ambiguous situations actually humanizes him further. It's a unique world that the author has built where young adults are faced with ongoing ethical dilemmas that have readers along for the ride.

In addition to warring allegiances, opposing spiritual beliefs are also addressed in this book as a result of Reiya's background. It's quite a delicate dance in how different forms of worship are expressed, allowing us to better understand why people made the sacrifices they did to try to obtain favourable outcomes. Where faith is most beautifully conveyed is in the relationship between Aliwyn and Toby where forgiveness plays a huge role in their personal growth and as they share their feelings for one another. Readers who have enjoyed Healer's Blade will be keen to discover what happens next with Aliwyn as she seeks to serve others no matter who they are, and as things become more tense with Toby and Matthew during an explosive war.

I had the opportunity to beta read this gem, and it was an amazing experience. The begining of the first chapter included a recap of some moments from the previous book. It helped me recollect where the previous book had left off, which further helped me get immersed in the story.

Just like the previous books, this one too was high on emotions expressed in subtle and beautiful ways. The writing flowed smoothly, and as the story developed I found myself rooting for a character I couldn't have cared for in the earlier book.

Matthew's journey from a prejudiced young man with a singular goal to an open-minded, caring person wanting to do good for others was the highlight of the story. While I enjoyed Toby and Aliwyn's parts as well, I think Matthew stole the show in this one. I also loved his big brother-like interactions with Domilo and Kato.

Toby and Aliwyn's relationship progressed well despite all the complications. It was built on forgiveness, trust and the need to push each other to be the best version of themselves. It was heartwarming to see them evolve together.

The book had a good amount of conflict and issues sprinkled throughout, and it was great seeing the characters put in efforts to solve them. My favourite moments were the important revelations involving Matthew, Aliwyn and Toby. I ugly cried during all the scenes.

The end had a lot of action, and I was nervous the entire time wondering about the fate of the characters. All of them were flawed, but I couldn't find myself hating any of them, excluding Jacques Verdun ofcourse! I can't wait to see what comes next for them.

Kyrie Wang has done a fantastic job with the worldbuilding, and I highly recommend this book to historical fantasy readers.

This was a true epic second book. Watching all the characters, especially Matthew, who has just bloomed into overcoming a lot of personal mountains. Though he still has some way to go. I can't wait to see where Kyrie brings these characters in this next novel!

Thank you for the opportunity to listen to the Audiobook, Kyrie! The voices were wonderful and brought the characters to life a wonderful and unique way.

Themes ranged from forgiveness, courage, and compassion, with lots of suspense, action, tenderness, and some wholesome and deep romance sprinkled in.

Superb. Please take the time to read this series!

What a story!, I.oved following the characters and seeing the character development! This story did not disappoint! Lots of action and we got to see the characters grow. Of course the story ends on cliffhangers and we want to know what happens next. We have seen secrets revealed . Yet many secrets remain and we, the readers, are eagerly awaiting the next installment of the story. But this installment is to be savored and very much enjoyed!

It was such a nice encounter with some of the previous characters from Enemy's Keeper series. I loved their growth and how many bonds have been formed throughout the story. It was such a heartwarming feeling seeing Ali grow into such a strong and beautiful character.

⚔︎ World-Building ⚔︎
The details of the world and the events that happened in the book made me get even more immersed in the story. As usual, it is quite a cruel world, and there are a lot of things happening that may not be for everyone. For me it was quite a ride, and I enjoyed every single detail offered.

♡ What I liked/Disliked ♡
I loved the way things developed and the pov's we've received. I loved seeing Matt and Reiya in another light, and their funny moments were definitely sweet but also very silly, because Matt, not even if the flirt hits him in the head, won't be able to see it, which made me giggle many times. I LOVED the first kiss in the story, it was so much-awaited and when it came, it made everything so beautiful. The kiss was tender and sweet, exactly what you'd expect from two people who slowly fall in love. I definitely loved the growth of the characters as I mentioned above, especially after Healer's Blade when Ali wasn't my favorite, she has grown on me and I loved the change! The world is not kind and there are lots of things happening, the details offered of the world, actions and events were beautifully crafted and It definitely caught me. I am definitely excited to see where things go.

🔥 Spice Level/Potential Triggers 🔥
The story has no spice. There's only one kiss, as mentioned above. Potential triggers that I think are worth mentioning are loss of a family member, mid-graphic info on head harvesting/beheading, wolf attack, abuse, broken bones, and parental trauma. Nothing that happened in the story triggered me, since it is intended for a younger audience, the story is not overly graphic but it doesn't shy away from some more darker subjects.

This is the second book in the Enemy’s Keeper series and takes place immediately after the action in book 1, Healer’s Blade. On one side, we have the Boltons who are English rebels fighting the French Norman invaders. On the other side, we have the Marcottes, English supporters of the Norman king, and the local tribes. Caught in the middle are peasants and small villages who just want to be left alone. The story is told from the POV of Tobias Bolton- a bastard son, but the sole remaining heir to his father and uncle, Matthew Marcotte - a squire in the Norman army, and Aliwyn - a healer, an orphan, and one of the peasants caught in the middle.
We are immediately dumped into the action of the story. Aliwyn has been taken as hostage during a battle at the water mill. All of the action (and there is a lot of it) takes place during six days as the armies converge on Revener’s Point on the river. There are crosses and double crosses, unwilling allies, and traitors to the cause and to their hearts.
The characters are more fleshed out in this book and Aliwyn’s redemption arc is especially gratifying to see as she matures a lot in a short time. Two of my favorite characters from the first book, Kato and Evelyn, reappear but in such minor roles, I was a little disappointed. There is hope, however. The book clearly ends on a “to be continued” vibe and I am already looking forward to the next one.
TW: death, family betrayal, violence against children, racism, prejudice. Spice is of the “first kiss” variety.

This book was LONG… but it was worth it!! The characters were well developed, and I loved how once Aliwyn decided who she loved, she was loyal to them till the end! I will definitely be reading the next books in the series!

I would recommend for ages 14+, because of violence… and I can’t remember what else 😆. It has been a week since I read it, and I can’t remember any other things I should warn you about… it should be clean, from what I remember.

With Book #2 in the Enemy's Keeper series, the third volume if you include the prequel, it feels like Wang has hit her stride with this story. While I enjoyed the prequel and book #1, in "Traitor's Heart," she takes the characters and themes she's spent two books building up and elevates them all to a new level. Her character writing shines. It's rare I read a book that has me rooting so intensely for flawed people on both sides of a conflict. The complexity is written so well. Everybody's making tough decisions, fighting troubled pasts, and being transformed as a result.

Matthew Marcotte is hands-down my favorite. Spurned Norman knight-in-training, loyal to a fault, he's pathetic and inspiring and so, so angry. Watching him begin to heal from *spoilers* and forge new relationships, reconciling with his past as he struggled to find a new place, was immensely satisfying.

There were three POV's, and for the most part, shifting between them felt fluid, but once in a while it got confusing. In terms of pacing, there are a lot of events very densely packed into a few days, and events from book 1 were brought up in conversations the characters had about their past week. To be fair, perhaps if I read more in the morning and less late at night, I wouldn't have an issue keeping track of the timeline.

Now that I'm all caught up on the series, I shall bide my time as I eagerly wait for Book #3 by researching the Norman conquest in a hobbit hole somewhere.

The danger and suspense just keep building in this magic-free, alternative history fantasy story! This is book 2 and picks up just a few days before the ending of book 1 from a different character’s perspective. It’s action packed, with plenty of twist and a few light faith elements. The story is still not resolved and I am already anticipating book 3.

Matthew is determined, he will keep his promise to his best friend no matter what. He’ll even form an unexpected alliance and desires revenge too. He has a lot of lessons to learn about himself and those around him. Reiya is fierce. She is a warrior and a chief struggling to believe she knows best.

Aliwyn is caring and determined. She wants to do right. I loved her relationships with Emma and Zelrin, she was so gentle and understanding with them. Toby is loyal to his family and protective of Ali, Emma, and Zel. He had to deal with a lot of self doubt and a family secret. Ali and Toby faced many dangers side by side. Their trust in each other was definitely tested. They had a sweet romance.

Kyrie Wang took everything she built in the first book – the danger, emotional depth, moral knots, and the aching moments between characters doing their best to survive – and ramped up the tension in Traitor’s Heart.
Alliances shift, trust is rare, every choice has consequences, yet the characters still reach for hope. Moments of connection land hard in the darker moments.
Matthew’s inner conflict, his mistakes, and the slow reshaping of his conscience make him a most compelling character this time around. Reiya’s fierce, proud resilience enriches the narrative. Toby’s storyline had me in tears.
Loyalty, love, and war's ugly realities tug at Aliwyn, who continues to shine amid conflicted factions.
There’s action aplenty - raids, escapes, political manoeuvrings, and a new threat. Still, the moments that hit hardest are the stolen conversations, fragile truces, unexpected alliances, and the subtle, slow-burning romances. Phew!
Wang’s writing shines brightest in the emotional details: a character hardening his jaw against fear, hope rising when a familiar figure walks toward him through the chaos, sparks rising from a fire as forgiveness hangs in the air. These intimate moments make the book unforgettable.
Hope is the silver lining in every cloud. A treat!

5 stars (5/10 hearts). Okay, this is one of the type of books I love—with a storyline that arcs over the entire series. Now that I know that, I am so eager to read books 0.5 & 1 again to trace it more closely!

I started out pretty much despising Matthew, though I also couldn't help liking him a little, but by the end he was a solid favourite. And Reiya too. ;) I just loved following along on his moral dilemmas as he tried to decide if he was gonna do what was right and suffer, or what was convenient and also suffer. His healing + growth was slow but deep, and I loved the ending. As for Reiya, I'm loving seeing her step in as chieftess! Aliwyn & Toby have a rather more tumultuous half of the book, adding suspense to the the storyline, but they also had their moral dilemmas and especially a lot of communication difficulties/trust issues! And oh, I loved seeing Aelfric's shadow reappear. I finally am at peace with book 1 now.

As always, I loved the alternate history setting, with the whole gunpowder problem, and I really enjoyed getting to study Reiya's tribe more. In short, it was a very enjoyable novel that stuck with me long after I finished it, and I eagerly awaited book 3!

Kyrie hits it out of the park once again! I love the character development. Reiya is one of my absolute favorites. You can feel her struggle as a new chief to her people and the need for the elders of the tribe to let her lead. She wants to adhere and respect the old ways but you can see she is open to new possibilities.
One thing I really enjoyed was how whether it was Toby or Matthews POV you were reading you could fully empathize with them and understand why they were angry at the other. Id finish reading Matthews POV and think Toby deserved what he had coming to him, and then by the time i was done with Toby’s i was back to thinking Matthew was in the wrong.
The time on the ship was also really exciting and i enjoyed seeing that all playout.
Highly recommend and i, excited for the 3Rd book!

I read this book out of order thinking I had read book #1, but I was mistaken. I had read the prequel so I knew who I was reading about. I really enjoyed this book and the emotional rollercoaster of the characters. The author is amazing with her descriptions and keeping one interested in the story!

I enjoyed rejoining the world of Enemy's Keeper and the characters had grown a lot and learnt that maybe the world is not black or white, things are much more complicated than that, and they are becoming the hopefully wonderful adults they will be.

There is a lot more to the danger in book 2 that will influence not just England, but the whole world if not handled delicately, and it raised the tension and consequences of the character's actions.

The reason I gave this four stars is because every time I saw Matthew, I got annoyed at his naivety and straight forward thinking (not a bad thing per se but just a personal opinion which influenced, whenever it switched to his pov, me wanting to scream at him).

The cliffhanger has me hanging and I'm scared for the oncoming journey. However, the ending felt quite abrupt and perhaps this was sorted out in the official story.

Fantastic book! It does a great job of recapping the first book if you haven't read it (although this one is meant to be read afterwards). Good development of Matthew, Aliwyn, and Tobias (and we *finally* get some of his backstory!). Plus there's more AliwynxToby 😍 and they are so cute together. Medically and historically accurate as always. The later half of the book is a wild ride, so be emotionally prepared! There is a cliffhanger for one of the characters Toby has been captured by the Normans , though it's not too bad, so I'm looking forward to reading the next one!

Sensitive aspects:

Traitor’s Heart in particular may be best suited for older teens and adults who enjoy complex and thought-provoking stories with gritty, often heavy themes. Especially-sensitive people should tread carefully.

This book offers great character growth and takes the reader on an emotional rollercoaster. Everything is so realistically complicated and tangled. Nothing is simplistic or sugar-coated, or totally bleak and hopeless. The characters continue to feel believably complex as they navigate messy, confusing situations. Their unpredictability works well, making them authentically human and preventing them from being formulaic or one-note.

The story jumps right into the action — it truly feels like picking up where things left off, even though the timeline steps back a bit. I’m especially glad to return to multiple points of view. I missed getting to know the characters better and getting a more complete picture of their personal character and complexities. That shift allows the reader to skip much of the judgment the characters make from having incomplete information.

Matthew continuously rises in my estimation throughout the story. He’s one of my favorite characters, possibly the greatest source of light in so much darkness. He feels very realistic and grounded, with a good balance of flaws and gradual growth. It’s refreshing to see someone wrestle with hurt and disillusionment, yet still choose understanding over judgment. When he realizes someone close to him wasn’t entirely truthful, he has the humility, strength, and faith in the person to seek to understand, even through his feelings of betrayal.

I love the character growth in Domilo as well, and the way Matthew and Domilo’s relationship develops. We see more of Matthew’s good qualities — his ability to recognize his own failings when Domilo calls him out (not even to help him!), and his sincere resolution to do better. It provides real hope that Matthew will shed his prejudice against the Vasfians, and it’s a pleasure to see a genuine connection begin to form between the two characters as they start to understand each other.

Aliwyn continues to grow as a character in many ways. She attains a new level of maturity and understanding later in the story as she comes to terms with the fact that two people she loves both did terrible, morally questionable things. She doesn’t fall into the trap of complete condemnation or complete justification. Instead, she understands that while they both caused harm, they acted out of what they believed was necessary — and she’s able to hold space for both her feelings of betrayal and the impossible nature of the situation, and still love them both simultaneously.


As always with this series, there is so much to take away:

People are so layered and complex, and life is complicated. We are, by definition, paradoxes — capable of behaving in sometimes polar opposite ways. It’s essential to be careful when making black-and-white judgments. We all work with the information we have, and so often that information is incomplete.

Prejudice and assumption are central continuing themes in the series. Characters get to know others who challenge their preconceptions. While certain aspects of the picture are sometimes accurate, they’re not usually quite as previously thought — or at least not as straightforward.

The Vasfian characters in particular are shown projecting and making assumptions — Reiya’s mother and grandmother judge Matthew harshly based on their prejudice and only knowing that he estranged himself from his family, not the rest of the picture. This connects to the broader theme that you cannot judge people based on things they cannot control. The Vasfians condemn Kato for what his mother did. They refuse to see him as a person, only as a product. Matthew, by contrast, understands that Reiya is not her mother or grandmother, and that their actions say nothing about Reiya’s character. It’s Reiya who still needs to learn that herself.

There is also the idea of making assumptions about someone based solely on their current position. Just because someone seems to have it all now doesn’t mean they haven’t struggled on the way there — and sometimes, they still don’t have exactly what you think they do.


Matthew and Reiya seem to be heading toward a romantic relationship. What makes me hesitant about the prospect is that their differences in belief are not minor or peripheral — they’re foundational. It’s not just a disagreement; each one’s convictions are, from the other’s perspective, heretical. My concern is whether, in pursuing their relationship, the story will maintain the authenticity of those deeply held beliefs, or if it will sidestep the tension by downplaying or compromising that conflict to smooth the path for their union.

Traitor’s Heart by Kyrie Wang is everything I want from a sequel: bigger stakes, deeper characters, and a world that feels like it’s expanding with every page.

I’ll be honest, I struggled with the first book because of the main character. Aliwyn came across as selfish and terrified, but when the author reached out and explained that her character arc is the point, that we’re MEANT to see her grow from that place, I was intrigued enough to continue as an ARC reader. And I’m SO GLAD that I did!

This second installment is intense, complex, and fascinating. The characters are far from perfect, but their choices always make sense within the messy web of politics, rebellion, and survival. Aliwyn still feels like a regular person caught in extraordinary circumstances, and that “ordinary in the midst of chaos” quality makes her arc compelling. She has some serious growth here. Matthew’s POV, though, surprised me most of all; I found myself completely invested in his journey, his shifting loyalties, and the way his path intersects with Aliwyn’s. I really disliked him most of all in the last book, so that was pretty surprising. His chapters enriched the entire story and gave me a much better scope of the conflict. And HE grows even more than Aliwyn, I think.

The historical feel is another strength. It’s low fantasy, but it reads like meticulously researched historical fiction with just enough of a fantastical edge. The action sequences are riveting, the political intrigue is layered, and the turmoil feels real. It’s the kind of story where you can see every character’s motivations clearly, even when they’re at odds. The writing itself flows beautifully, striking a balance between grounded detail and intensity. This is one of those sequels that makes the entire series click into place for me. I can see the vision, and I’m invested.

An exhilarating adventure from start to finish.

Traitor's Heart is book two of the Enemy's Keeper series by Kyrie Wang, and without a doubt, Kyrie Wang's best book to date.
I very quickly fell in love with this series. The idea of a medieval world where Vikings, Celts, and knights battle for control over gunpowder, mixed with Wang's incredible ability for storytelling, makes this one of my favourite series of all time. *Chefs Kiss*
In Traitor's Heart, we get to see Matthew's POV and Toby's POV, which was a refreshing change from book one. In Traitor's Heart, I feel that each of the characters goes through a change, and we see the character arc that they go through. Aliwyn especially transforms into a different, more confident, and stronger woman, which I absolutely adored. At the beginning of the book, I would turn my nose up at a certain character whom I disliked, but slowly, Kyrie Wang gave them another side, and gave us a new outlook on them. 465 pages later: They are my favorite character.

The action and the battles in Traitor's Heart were phenomenal. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the book, and the further I got into the book, the less I could sit still. The last one hundred pages were nearly impossible to put down. I cannot wait to read what Kyrie Wang has planned for book three.

This book took me longer to read because of personal circumstances. My work schedule has been so busy over the last month to the point where I have been almost unable to read at all!!

However, I can now truly say that it is once again an extremely well written and intense addition to the series. At this point, I very much look forward to hearing this one again once it is released on audiobook — and then also for the continuation of the series as we find out more about Matthew and Reiya, Aliwyn and Toby, as well as so many other supporting characters.

Be prepared for violence, and deep revelations of each character, as well as much soul-searching and continued revelations of secrets. I keep wondering how all of this will turn out.

I guess we will all be anxiously awaiting the next book in the series as Miss Kyrie Wang brings more revelations, and hopefully conclusions to some of the mysteries.

Traitor’s Heart is a thrilling addition to the series. Matthew is growing closer to Reiya while fighting to “rescue” Aliwyn in honor of Aelfric’s memory. Ali is struggling to either take down the ship she’s on before it gets into the wrong hands or convince Toby, rebel leader, to do it for her and run away together. All sides of the equation battle rising feelings they don’t know what to do with. And when Toby is captured as a rebel to be taken to the gallows, can Ali save him? Will anyone make it out on top, or is everything too far gone?

Wow!! This continues the story perfectly and has so much depth of the tale that I’ve loved from the start. The ending has me so ecstatic for the next book but I will settle for loving these first books for now. What a read. I am in love with Ali and her story as well as the multiple romances going on underneath the main plot. A huge recommend from me for any fantasy readers out there!

Whew… reading this book was like running a marathon. 😅 It was a lot longer than I thought it was going to be, so it took me a lot longer to read it. However, it was an exciting book to read. I enjoyed reading the different point of views so that I could know what they were thinking. The plot had several twists which made it exciting. While I read through the first 2/3 of the book slowly, I sped through the end. So much happened near the end that I couldn’t put it down without finding out what happened. I definitely recommend reading this to find out more about Tobias, Aliwyn, Matthew, and others. The first book should be read first to truly understand the plot and characters. It was such an enjoyable read. 🙂

Where to even start?? This book was so full of unexpected feels, and emotion tugging situations. The characters keep finding themselves in impossible situations due to the wider world. I liked Matthew in book 1, but book two made me really fall and hope for Toby’s redemption. That doesn’t mean I stopped liking Matthew. He really has moments of becoming more of a man in this book! I love his honestly with himself that he leans into in the latter half of the book.

Gah, these characters… to top it all off, I’m not that into historical fiction! Or at least I didn’t think so! I read the ARC of book two very eagerly! Keep up the great work!!

Excellent. From the beginning, when we get a very useful recap of the 1st book. The story flows effortlessly with great detail and a female lead that can take on the whole world and still win. The character growth from the first book to this one, you can't help but love every aspect of it. Very fast-paced. Never a dull moment. You are riding high from the very beginning. I had a very hard time putting this one down.

Great read for those into medieval aspects. Clean Romance. With a writing style that keeps you turning the page.

Perfectly lives up to book one!

Just like in book one, the author did an amazing job of showing the complexity of war, how there are innocent and good people on both sides, as well as evil and cruel people fighting right alongside them. It is honestly amazing how the author has me routing for people on both sides, all while hoping the war is stopped before it really has a chance to get started.

We now have not just one amazing romance but two! Matthew and Reiya are technically on the same side, but Matthew has a lot of prejudice to overcome, and Reiya's trust isn't so easily earned, but the attraction is obvious, and they are adorable. Aliwyn and Toby still find themselves at odds, but they are so tender and loving to each other. I just want both couples to get happy endings... but we aren't there yet, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

I listened to the audiobook, and it was fantastic! Both narrators did a fantastic job and were very pleasant to listen to!

I really enjoyed getting to learn more about these characters and this world! I can't wait to read the 3rd book! I wasn't a big fan of Matthew at the beginning of this book but as I watched him grow and change he quickly became one of my favorite characters. Kyrie Wang did a great job with the character development.

Well this book really took me by surprise. I’m normally a fantasy / historical fiction girl I’m not used to both being merged together but I was extremely surprised. It was so so good. The world building was massive and really intricate. I really couldn’t get enough of it. I loved the fact that the vikings and the Norman’s were involved in this book.
