It’s autumn, 1963, and there’s a dark cloud hanging over London. Literally.

The thick, impenetrable smog is the perfect cover for a killer who’s stalking the streets, not that traffic warden, Gabriella Farnsworth, knows that when she’s approached by three young boys who say they’ve found a body.

When her boyfriend, Detective Sergeant James Archer, gets assigned the case, he begins to build a picture of the killer’s patterns and becomes increasingly nervous every time the smog settles over the city.

Especially when bodies are found once the mist clears.

Gabriella’s diverse contacts on the street provide vital information that help James understand that these murders are not the start of a killing spree, they are a continuation of one that came before.

They’ll have to go back to what happened during the Blitz, to another time when London was shrouded in darkness, to find the clues to catch the man who’s returned to kill again.

James and Gabriella know that they have to solve the mystery before the next fog descends, because when it does, the killer will strike again.

If you know me, you know that Michelle Diener is one of my favorite science fiction romance authors (see Class 5 and Verdent String series). And one of my favorite romantasy authors (See Rising Wave series). Oh, and one of my favorite historical romance authors (see Regency London and Susanna Horenbout and John Parker series). And for good measure, she’s probably my favorite hybrid sci-fi/fantasy author (see very underrated Sky Raiders series).

The point is, Diener has Range with a capital R. Everything she’s written I’ve loved, regardless of genre. And now I can add that she’s probably my favorite historical murder mystery author (see this series, Traffic Warden Mysteries).

And that’s saying a lot because as I mentioned in my review for book 1, Ticket Out, murder mysteries and true crime are not my thing at all. However, Diener has set the Traffic Warden series in such a unique era and setting—gritty, 1960s London—that I couldn’t help but enjoy both books simply for all the era slang and British lingo.

Effusive praise for the author aside, Return Ticket still has all the elements you’ve come to know and love from Diener’s formula: a save-herself heroine, a clever and supportive leading man, a host of interesting side characters, and a stronger together romance; though disclaimer, the romance is WAY in the background in this series.

Anyway, full-throated recommendation that you give this series a go, even if like me, it’s not your go-to genre.

I received an ARC of this book as a member of Michelle's FB Readers Group, and had the chance to sus out a few typos. Look for my name in the acknowledgments. (Can't never not brag about that.)

Loved, loved, loved this book!
Return Ticket is a fantastic blend of romance and mystery, set against the moody, atmospheric backdrop of London in 1963. But truly, it’s no surprise I enjoyed it—Michelle Diener’s writing is always a major draw for me, and she absolutely delivers here.

Gabriella Farnsworth, our Australian heroine, arrives in foggy London and takes a job as a traffic warden—only to find herself caught up in a chilling mystery involving a serial killer using the city’s dense fog as a cover for his crimes. Gabriella is surrounded by a strong cast of supporting characters, and her love interest—a Detective Sergeant working the case—is both compelling and refreshingly supportive.

I loved getting both points of view, and the romance was a perfect slow burn. It’s not overtly passionate or in-your-face, but the emotional depth and quiet intensity made it all the more satisfying.

I had such a great time reading this and am already hoping the next book won’t be too far off. Honestly, I’d happily read one of these every month if Michelle Diener kept writing them!

In the second Traffic Warden Mysteries story, Gabriella Farnsworth is still working as a traffic warden and her relationship with Detective Sergeant James Archer is moving along nicely. Gabriella is on the job and ends up being present at the discovery of the bodies of two murdered women. James begins to investigate these murders along with several more, and with Gabriella’s contacts on the street, more information is uncovered of several women found during the war that might have been murdered as well and seem to be connected. James realizes there’s a killer loose that hunts during the thick fog and he’s determined to catch him. Gabriella must deal with irate people, especially men, that will threaten her with bodily harm over a parking fine, making her work as a traffic warden very risky, but she is very resourceful and has a great boss that looks out for her. James is a very capable investigator, and they work well together through the impenetrable fog, threats, and deadly danger, to put a stop to the killing. Set in 1963 London, with lots of suspense, some cozy romantic bits, and a few light moments along the way, this was another wonderful story in the series and I look forward to more to come.

Reread 10/25/25:

I completely agree with my rave review below written for my first read of this novel. This time around I listened to the recently released audio recording, which I obtained through my Audible membership. The narrator, Katherine Littrell, is so outstanding, she enhanced my enjoyment of this story to the level of a peak experience. She does a terrific job with multiple regional and international accents and with both male and female voices.

Review from 6/14/25:

5 stars

Second book in an exciting  police-procedural, romantic-suspense series set in 1963 London

This book does not stand alone. It is crucial to read the first book in this series, Ticket Out, before reading this book. I have included extensive information about the premise of this series in my review of Ticket Out, so I am not repeating that here.

I really like and admire the FMC, Gabriella, and the MMC, James, both as individuals and as romantic partners. Their romance is quite slowburn, but they make a great deal of progress in this novel toward what will obviously, ultimately, be a lovely HEA.

As was the case with Ticket Out, the action-adventure, crime-solving portion of this novel is extremely well done and quite exciting. There is a throughline in this series of Gabriella searching for her missing father. There is a huge breakthrough in that mystery in this novel, which promises to create more thrilling escapades for Gabriella in the next book. In addition to attempting to solve a serial killer case, in this novel James discovers that his immediate superior is corrupt. Both James's and Gabriella's individual mystery ends on a cliffhanger, each of which will presumably be fully resolved in the next novel.

Though I don't normally particularly care for murder mysteries or police procedurals unless they are TV shows, and I don't typically read historical romances set within the last 100 years, MD is such a fabulous author, and she is so terrific at writing romance, I'm really enjoying this series.

I am guessing, from the way the first two books have been structured, that this series will be a trilogy. I am eagerly looking forward to the third book.

As a hardcore Michelle Diener fan, I am not 100% sure how I felt about this one. I settled on 3,5 star but rounded it up to 4 because despite the things I didn’t like, I still thoroughly enjoyed the book as a whole.

Things I didn’t like
1) the relationship between James and Gabriela - mostly because there barely was one. They spent too much of the book apart for my taste

2) too many plots. At one point I had to stop and count on my fingers how many plots and subplots there were happening - I counted 5 total, which was too many in my opinion. One particular plot could have been left out, and then I think it would have have been a 5 star read for me.

3) the number of men who who wanted to do Gabriela literal physical harm. At one point, I had put the book aside for a bit out of sheer exasperation.

Is spite of those admittedly small issues, I enjoyed the main plot, I liked Gabriela in spite of the fact that I usually cannot stand characters who do stupid things (she did something monumentally stupid near the end) and James though I would have liked their relationship to have developed a bit more than it did. I will definitely pick up the next book in the series.

When I reviewed the first book in this series (Ticket to Ride) I noted my surprise about the 1960's London setting and the murder-mystery plot. However, I also loved the setting, the mystery, the characters, and the building romance, and was excited to continue the series. Now here we are in book 2 - we get some great evolution of the romance, hints to the upcoming story about the heroine's mysterious missing father, and more murder mystery! Like all of Diener's books, I strongly recommend this series and this book. Even if this is not your usual genre, it's excellent and worth taking a chance!
I received an ARC of this book; all opinions and views are my own.

RETURN TICKET is the second in a modern-ish day mystery series, Traffic Warden Mysteries #2 by author Michelle Diener. It’s set in 1963, so it’s got kind of a contemporary feel to it, especially as compared to Diener’s typical science fiction genre. Diener has done a few historical whodunit series, too. My absolute favorite from this author is her Susanna Horenbout and John Parker series, set in Henry the Eighth’s England.

This , Traffic Warden Mysteries #2 series is the first that she’s done set in this century, and I already owned book 1, titled TICKET OUT, which was sitting in my To Be Read pile. So I opened up TICKET OUT, then hopped on to RETURN TICKET. I can think of a few authors who have written books set in different worlds or timeframes where some series have worked for me but others, written with the same sort of voice but placed into a different setting, don’t work for me. Usually this happens when authors try to write more modern-day books, and that’s the case here. I really enjoy many other series by Diener, but her midcentury mysteries miss the mark for me.

Gabriella Farnsworth is a half Italian woman who moved from her birth country of Australia, and takes up a job as a London traffic warden to make ends meet. Gabriella is one of those characters who always seems to be tripping over bodies. This kind of character is always wildly entertaining in an unlikely manner to read about – how can someone get into so much trouble?! She’s typically so bold and almost blasé-acting about the dangers she’s in too, even if she is shaking inside.

Gabriella’s boyfriend, Detective Sergeant James Archer with Scotland Yard is searching for a killer who is using the pea soup fogs of London to provide cover for his nefarious deeds. It seems that these current killing are tied to a series of unsolved murders from during the Blitz. Gabriella gets pulled into DS Archer’s search, and some of her neighbors get involved in the shenanigans too. Part of what I enjoyed about these books is the strong and supportive ties between many of the characters.

I typically really enjoy Diener’s work, but this 1960’s London series is not my particular cup of tea. Diner’s voice doesn’t work for me when set into a twentieth century backdrop. I will be sure to grab any other series’ books that Diener publishes, but I think the traffic warden and her detective romantic interest will have to do without me in the future.

I received an ARC from the author for reivew, and these views are my own. Once I get an isbn from the author, I will submit this review for publication at the book review site FreshFiction.com . When it is pubbed at FF, I will update this review to contain an excerpt, with a link to the full review at FF.

Mysteries on top of Mysteries!
Aussie Gabriella Farnsworth came to London looking for the father who abandoned her and her mom years ago. To support herself, Gabby works as a traffic warden (giving out parking tickets). Gabby is outgoing, friendly, and bubbly. She has made many friends, and most are real spicy characters.
Gabriella’s route takes her on foot through sometimes questionable neighborhoods. She’s soon alerted to a dead lady. Detective Sergeant James Archer works at the New Scotland Yard and is called in on the murder by his girlfriend, Gabriella. They met in book one and are now close. As the bodies add up, it looks like there’s a serial killer on the loose. On top of that, Gabby is being pestered by the man in the green Jaguar from book one because of the ticket she gave him, and then there’s the PI hired by that guy's wife stalking her …and then the farmer who electrifies his trucks to get out of parking tickets. Ouch, that hurts! In other words, Gabriella is a danger magnet on steroids.
Detective Archer is kept very busy looking for the serial killer, scaring away the creeps who don’t want to pay parking tickets but are happy to stalk, intimidate, or even hurt Gabby. Then there’s the corrupt police at his station giving him and his partner trouble.
The story takes place in the early 1960s, the best years ever for music and fashion! BUT… missing is the convenience of cell phones (phone booths and landlines only) and computers. Oh yeah, Gabriella’s father has been found. He’s a Lord, married with kids. I can’t wait to read about his story in the next book.
This “who done it” really keeps you interested. There are so many crimes, and bad guys, and most seem centered around poor Gabby. I loved Gabriella and Archer. They are both tough, caring, intelligent characters. I can’t wait for the next story. Linda

4.5 STARS

In this second book of the Traffic Warden Mysteries, Gabriella Farnesworth is once again just trying to do her job and stay out of trouble when three young boys tell her they have found a body in some rubble leftover from the World War II era bombings. Since London has been encased in a tomb-like smog, the scene and what looks to a homicide seems like something out of a horror movie. Detective James Archer takes the case after learning his girlfriend, Gabriella, is involved. Unfortunately, this incident may be linked to a serial killer responsible for the disappearance of several young women in the area over many years.

Because misfortune appears to follow Gabriella wherever she goes, she is also dealing with irate drivers who do not want to be ticketed including one she has dealt with before who is causing all sorts of problems. Gabriella has also been on the search for her father who may have abandoned his family in Australia once he returned to England years ago. She receives some new shocking information on that score.

James is dealing with his crooked boss who is on the take and is trying to get others to do cross the thin blue line to the dark side. James and his assistant are working behind the scenes to avoid the man and possibly aid in taking him down. James and Gabriella have a still nascent relationship and as of yet, have not had much time together when not involved in criminal adjacent activities. Several elements are building in this series including James and Gabriella’s relationship, her search for answers regarding her father, and James’s corrupt boss who has it out for him. I look forward to the next installment to see some or all of those aspects coming to fruition.

Return Ticket Delivers: A Slow Burn Worth the Ride!

Return Ticket
Traffic Warden Mysteries, Book 2

It was an absolute pleasure to return to the world of Ticket Out in this second instalment of the Traffic Warden Mysteries. Michelle Diener once again delivers a compelling slow-burn mystery, steadily building pace with vivid detail and rich character development.

Gabriella Farnsworth, the standout heroine from book one, returns alongside a compelling and complex hero, supported by a cast of familiar and engaging characters. The chemistry, intrigue, and layered relationships make this another unputdownable read.

As someone born in 1959 Australia, I had a particularly nostalgic perspective while reading. Diener’s evocation of 1960s London—the music, the fashion, the shifting social norms—is spot-on. It’s not just historical backdrop; it’s atmosphere you can feel. That immersive quality is what sets Michelle Diener apart, whether she’s writing futuristic sci-fi, historical fiction, or swinging ’60s mysteries.

Return Ticket proves once again why she remains one of my favourite authors. I’m already looking forward to the next in the series.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review—and my admiration for Diener’s storytelling remains well earned.

In *Return Ticket*, Michelle Diener skillfully continues her captivating Gabriella Farnsworth series, blending rich historical details with an engaging mystery and deep emotional themes. Set against the fog-drenched streets of 1960s London, this installment raises the stakes as Gabriella, now a determined and resourceful traffic warden, unexpectedly discovers a lifeless body hidden in the rubble. Once again, she finds herself caught up in a twisted and sinister murder investigation, teaming up with the astute and enigmatic James Archer from Scotland Yard.

This novel intricately weaves the lingering trauma of wartime with the dangers of present-day life. The heavy smog serves not only as a backdrop but also as an almost sentient force in the narrative, obscuring crimes and concealing deep secrets within its swirling mists. The romantic subplot unfolds subtly and gracefully, opting for nuance over overt drama, which may leave some readers longing for more passion.

*Return Ticket* is an intellectually engaging and atmospheric sequel that showcases a resilient heroine navigating a world filled with nostalgia and peril. With its immersive setting and a murder mystery resonating with the echoes of war, this novel provides a richly rewarding reading experience for fans of historical crime fiction.

Tracing Death Through London’s Fog

This book has such an intriguing premise—murders set against the backdrop of 1960s London, a period I haven’t explored much in fiction. The setting is vividly atmospheric, with the thick smog creating the perfect shroud for a killer to strike, and for secrets to linger in the shadows.

Michelle Diener does a brilliant job weaving historical context into the mystery, especially around the evolving roles of women and the slow grind of social and legal progress. It’s a sobering reminder that many of the rights and protections we take for granted today were hard-won, often after someone paid the ultimate price.

I loved the gentle romance simmering between Gabriella and James—it never overpowered the main plot but added a lovely layer of emotional depth. Gabriella’s unique street connections brought an added richness to the investigation, offering insights no official channel could provide and helping to tie the current killings to events long buried in the chaos of the Blitz.

The suspense builds steadily toward a gripping finale, and I’m definitely curious to see what happens next—especially with Gabriella’s father and the unresolved threads tied to him. As always, Michelle’s writing is engaging, immersive, and deeply satisfying.

I liked this novel - a blend of mystery, thriller, and women's fiction - taking place in 1963 in London. Mystery is not really my genre, but I find this author immensely readable. I enjoy most of her output in several genres, and I gobbled the first book in this series, Ticket Out.
I can say the same about this book. It was a quick and absorbing story, very satisfying. The tension was high throughout. Both the hero and the heroine were worth rooting for. And despite the looming danger, the narrative seemed light, hopeful. No all-pervasive darkness there, as is becoming more and more wide-spread in contemporary fiction. Instead all this author's books are uplifting. That's why I like them so much.
The fact that some ends were left dangling in this installment is encouraging: I hope there is one more book in the series, which would tie up all those dangling ends neatly. I hope it would happen soon.

ARC Review
Spoilers
There is so much to like in this second book of the Traffic Warden Mysteries: the multiple mysteries, the atmospheric fog and the suspense. There were so many interesting details of the period that Michelle included that make this very enjoyable to read.

Unfortunately I was very disappointed with James as a hero in the way that he treated Gabriella, especially because of the 1963 setting. He handles his police job well avoiding pitfalls and solving crimes admirably, but he does not value Gabriella in this novel. He leaves her for 3 days with no contact. He lets her go home alone when he knows she has a dangerous stalker. He does not bring her flowers and chocolates. He quite literally did not work hard enough for her attention. He deserved for her to lose interest in him and pay attention to other men, like that interesting fellow Australian lawyer. Handsome is as Handsome does, and it would have been a more interesting story if James got the logical consequences of his neglect and failing to appreciate and treasure Gabriella.

Is there anything Ms. Diener cannot write? When it comes to historical romance, urban fantasy, space opera, or straight up mystery, ms. Diener captivates me. Her writing style pulls me in from the very first page and keeps me riveted. The second book in this Traffic Warden series is a page turner. I recommend reading the first book in the series before reading this one. Diving into this book, the quick references to the previous book helped immediately recall the events in the last book. This one, Gabriella finds herself in more trouble and tripping over dead bodies.

Return Ticket

A gripping murder mystery that masterfully weaves intricate plot details with immersive world-building. The protagonists emerge as complex, compelling characters, while the supporting cast adds depth and nuance to the narrative. James and Gabriella shared a tender and heartwarming romance that continued to blossom with genuine affection and mutual respect. Their relationship was characterized by sweet moments of connection, deep emotional understanding, and a pure love that seemed to radiate warmth and sincerity. Their bond was marked by gentle gestures, shared laughter, and a profound sense of companionship that made their relationship feel both delightful and wholesome. The storyline captivates from start to finish, creating an irresistible page-turner that demands your full attention. An exceptional read that satisfies readers and leaves them eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series.

Fabulously entertaining. This is the 2nd in a 1960's mystery series featuring Aussie transplant Gabriella working in London as a traffic warden while searching for her English father who gets caught up in murder. In this one, Gabriella is once again peripherally involved in her Scotland yard boyfriend James' work through the discovery of a body on her route. Only this time the body is one of many that are turning up placing James & Hartridge on the trail of a serial killer whilst juggling the machinations of a bent superior & dodgy colleagues. She is also being stalked and menaced by various parties due events arising from her job and has discovered some unsettling news about her father. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from the author but all view expressed are my own. I loved the setting, the time and the characters.

The autumn London fog of 1963 is of the pea soup variety. And it's covering the tracks of a killer.
Gabriella Farnsworth, is a London traffic warden and directed to a woman's body by three kids who found it while playing in an abandoned lot. But as the weeks progress, she and her boyfriend, Detective Sergeant James Archer, realize that there are multiple victims... and that it will continue until someone can stop the killer.

Why I started this book: I love Diener's books (in all her genres) and was eager for the latest title.

Why I finished it: Great mystery, and the set up for the next book has me on the edge of my seat.

Totally charmed

I have just been totally charmed by both of the Traffic Warden Mysteries. The setting (1963) is so fun, the characters are realistic and quite lovable without being caricatures, the slow burn romance is great, and the plotting is excellent. My one complaint is that I really wasn’t ready for the story to end. There are still burning questions unanswered. Hopefully, Ms Diener has another book ready to go!

Riveting!

Love this latest release! Gabby is tenacious and feisty - all the things one would expect from a young Australian girl living abroad. I also love how Michelle weaves historical fact into the story making a work of fiction all the more plausible - as the saying goes, fact is stranger than fiction. Looking forward to the next instalment as I can’t wait for the excitement meeting her father will bring…

While I like the Verdant String sci-fi adventures/mysteries better, this series is growing on me. I’m having to google a few things about London in the 60s, which is always fun. The amount of dead bodies Gabriella finds, and the amount of people following her home is ludicrous but the great characters make up for that. Plus I’m intrigued enough about what’s to come with the dad that I will keep reading.

Michelle Diener never disappoints. This was a great story, fast-paced, action filled, and with good character development.
What I loved most about it besides the mystery and the well written romance is the 1960s setting. It felt well researched and realistic.

This had the easy to read style of Michelle Diener that I've come to really enjoy. The MCs were both likable and admirable, and their relationship development was very nice. However, the repetitiveness of the plot became boring after a while, hence the rating.
