This is a multi-perspective, time jumping, slow burning tale of what can be hidden in the calm of suburban life.
The author did a good job of shifting perspective just at the right moment, as well as displaying heavier topics such as loss of a child. It never got too heavy, at least for me that have never been in that situation, but deep enough to give it meaning and showing it's importance to the narrative. You get to see how tragic moments and desperate actions trigger events that forever alter lives.
Now, the markdown has nothing to do with the book itself. It's just not the type of read that works for me. When I read a thriller, I want to be guessing, or taken by surprise, up until the very end. That was not the case with The Perfect Mother. It is a good book, but it does not work as a thriller for me. And a thriller is what I will rate it as, since that it how it is marketed.

Doesn't flow well. Something happens on one page, then geez, it happens again differently on next page. These inconsistencies happen numerous times! There are a few typos. And it drops one character toward the end without any explanation as to what his fate was!

The Perfect Mother promised high emotions. I thought it would more than deliver when in the very first chapter Dawn left her front door open in her unfamiliar new neighbourhood and went out walking. I'd hoped it was setting the tone but while the crushing levels of desperation resulted in great moments of tension and bad decisions, it wasn't quite that. However it was an incredibly easy read to be swept up in.
That said, while the strain of both Dawn and Evelyn's choices are brought to painful life, the narrative doesn't quite do it justice. The shift to more perspectives is a fantastic choice that really breathes life into the book. However it's also where an important character is sidelined after so much build-up, and a shocking cliffhanger. To deny us that character's reaction, that rip-the-bandaid unraveling, then, is a disappointing prioritisation of shock value over narrative thrust. And it's not the only instance. A chapter ends on the promise of a confession only for the catharsis of that character's emotional fallout that has been building for decades to be neglected and it's the last time we see him too. Arguably the pivotal reveal is given this treatment too.
Moodie has spent so much effort in crafting cliffhangers and gotchas. And they really, truly are excellent. But neglects the payoff. It's unfortunately likely the reason why a chapter has dialogue all in italics. It's a weird, misplaced emphasis and its weirdness jars you out of the story rather than engages you. What a pity. There's a great story here. It could have been magificent but i's just not quite supported well enough for that. Unfortunately not the only place in which not enough care was taken. Mispellings are all but inevitable and easily forgivable but the first five pages of a chapter being an entire previous chapter is far harder to overlook.

This was a really interesting book! I wouldn’t quite say it’s a thriller, as it’s a bit slow paced, but it definitely has some suspenseful moments, and I was constantly rooting for Dawn. I can’t even imagine what she was going through as a mother myself, and I honestly agreed with pretty much every single thing she did in the book. The dual timeline was fun as well, and I loved that the author even gives an alternate ending!

The Perfect Mother Brings Some Twists and Turns to the Expected Storyline. While Evelyn's secret is easy enough to figure out pretty early on, the author still manages to weave some twists and turns throughout the story to keep it interesting and engaging. It did take a few chapters for me to fall into sync with the flow of the story and the shifts between time periods and points of view, but I enjoyed watching the full story unfold.
Don't Expect to Love the Characters. I didn't find myself connecting well with any of the characters in the book, but they were fairly well-developed and complex enough to keep me interested in the outcomes. While the shifts in the points of view throughout the novel helped tell the stories of both women, there were times that the voices were very similar, and this made some sections seem a little confusing or feel overly long.
Would I Recommend The Perfect Mother by Desiree Moodie? If you are looking for an exciting page-turner--this isn't that type of psychological thriller. If you enjoy dramas that look at the impacts of events and trauma on lives, this is an interesting story. I didn't love the ending as presented in the novel and preferred the "alternate ending" provided, so be sure to read both endings! Overall, I enjoyed the book (especially with the alternate ending) and would read other books from the author.

It’s perfect for fans of emotional dramas – that’s the most obvious, of course.
If you appreciate books that go into deep emotional themes, you will enjoy this one. There are complex relationships, particularly between mothers and their children, empathizing with the pain of separation and the desire for reconnection.
It’s also perfect for those who enjoy character-driven stories: the book is rich in character development, focusing on the emotional turmoil.
If you appreciate books with psychological depth: trauma, loss, and identity, with deep insights into characters’ minds and motivations, with a hefty touch of manipulation and the effects of betrayal, offering a sobering look at how lies can shape lives.

This was a fast-paced, captivating read from start to finish. The premise and cover had me intrigued, so it wasn't a surprise that I was hooked from the very first page. Told in multiple POV, with a dual timeline of now and then, you get detailed accounts from everyone involved in the events of a child's kidnapping. Even though I knew there was no twist here (it's obvious from the blurb where this goes), I was gripped and needed to know how things were going to unfold.
I found Dawn's grief and desperation for answers utterly heartbreaking, yet chaotic. I often found myself thinking how I would react in her situation. Evelyn was quite obviously unhinged. There wasn't really any answer to why or how, but it was really interesting to get Daniel's input. That was quite unique and gave an insight into how he was feeling in all of this.
However, i had to remove a star because I had a big issue with the ending. It was very abrupt and left me with so many unanswered questions. I just don't think it fit in with the rest of the story, and I much preferred the alternative offering. Regardless, though, I will definitely more from this author

There wasn't really any answer to why or how, but it was really interesting to get Daniel's input. That was quite unique and gave an insight into how he was feeling in all of this.
However, i had to remove a star because I had a big issue with the ending. It was very abrupt and left me with so many unanswered questions. I just don't think it fit in with the rest of the story, and I much preferred the alternative offering. Regardless, though, I will definitely more from this author

June 3, 2025Adult Thriller Fiction is an intriguing genre. The Perfect Mother by Desiree Moodie is the latest in this genre that I have read.
I will admit that the book started off slow. I didn't really get into the storyline until the 3rd chapter. Dawn Harrington and Evelyn Harper are the 2 main characters in this book. Dawn's life changed drastically 20 years ago when her son was taken while playing at a Park. Dawn has never giving up hope of finding him. 20 years later she decides she needs a change of pace in life and decides to move to a small town of Meadowbrook. Dawn's life in the small town didn't end up being quiet and calm due to a neighbor, Evelyn Harper. Dawn and Evelyn have a past and it was a good one. Evelyn is very protective of her family and her life and Dawn knows there is something Evelyn is hiding. I really felt sad for Dawn and all that she has been through and now she has to deal with Evelyn. There are so many twists and turns in this storyline, although I wouldn't say it was a Thriller, more so Mystery. The book is a dual timeline and I truly enjoy Dual timeline books. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Adult Mystery Fiction. Good Book!

I just couldn’t get a handle on my review. It seemed I was always revealing too much. I couldn’t avoid spoilers. This was one of those books you want to tell people about. You want them to read it so you can share your thoughts.

I really wanted to love this book. It had a very interesting premise, fascinating characters, all of the makings of what could’ve been an excellent story, but I’m disappointed to say it fell short for me. For starters, the book really dragged on. Parts that could have been succinct without sacrificing important details dragged on and on. The exciting, pivotal moments were glossed over, lacking details and clarity. It was extremely slow moving until the last third of the book; at that point, it picked up quickly but gave an anticlimactic finish. Also very frustrating that the book provides more questions than answers, and I was shocked at the number of loose ends that were never tied up. I read the whole book plus the alternate ending, and am still left in the dark. We’re given no explanation as to why or how Evelyn did what she did; what exactly Luke told Medina; if/how Dawn was actually “falling apart” as is mentioned several times. It was almost a DNF for me but I pushed through, hoping the grand reveal at the end would be worth it, but I’m sad to say that was not the case.

This was a sad story about a mother who lost her son. Dawn was not that likable for me. She seemed stressed out and not happy in her marriage. As the book progressed, I started to realize that she was reacting to a tragedy. It was amazing that Dawn moved near her old neighbors. If not for her choice of home, she may have never found her son. The story unfolds between different characters, their past, and their present. It was interesting to read about how the characters responded to the tragedy and how it affected their present, Including the detective. I did not really like the ending, but considering the circumstances, I can understand. The time period of the last few chapters was iffy for me, and I was upset that the author offered an alternate ending but didn't include it. There was a website listed where you can find it,, though. All in all this is a book that reminds us how precious motherhood is. I am giving this book a 3/5. I was given a copy; all opinions are my own.

Fast forward almost 20 years and Dawn’s marriage has fallen apart and she moves to a new neighborhood where she meets Evelyn. Evelyn has a son, Daniel, who is at college and twins at home. Both women have a POV in the story and this was one of my favorite parts, even though at the beginning I had a hard time remembering which woman was who. The author slowly releases details and at the beginning of the book I couldn’t tell if the women knew the other was. A slow burn story with plenty of secrets. It is not quite the book I thought it was and I would have loved to hear more from the missing son but it is a good read. How strong is a mother’s love?

I received an ARC for this book from Hidden Gems and the following is my sincere and truthful review.
Though, you know the "secret" pretty early in the story, the actual events at the end are awesome, yet emotional! I loved the "then" and "now" perspectives throughout the story, creating the overall big picture of these two ladies and what they have been though, as well as what decisions produce their foreseeable future. The character growth is realistic and gets all the feels. This story built such awesome tension and excitement to finally get the concluding revelations, that you won't want to put it down!

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a complimentary copy. Dawn Harrington's life was ripped apart when her son, Benjamin was stolen from her. Twenty years have passed and she has moved to Meadowbrook to find peace and a new beginning, but something about Evelyn Harper brings her past into the present. Evelyn has secrets, ones she does not want exposed and it may have to do with her son Daniel. What is Evelyn hiding from everyone including her son?
I figured out pretty quickly what was going on between Evelyn and Dawn and to be honest I don't blame Dawn one bit for her actions. I did like the alternate ending better because I felt like Evelyn got what she deserved as well but now she has to suffer the loss of Daniel because of her actions.

I enjoyed the non-linear timeline about the relationship between Dawn and Evelyn and their families. The ramifications of Evelyn's actions ~20 years ago caused the breakdown of a family and terrible issues within her own family. The follow through of the characters during the years and how they endured life's changes helped to fill in how they became who they are in the present. Following Daniel's story and concerns about his parentage and the final outcome at the end gave good follow through and what real life is like for those who grew up without their bio parents. I much preferred the alternate ending but all in all I enjoyed the story and getting to know all the characters.

I would rate this book more like 3.5 stars, but rounded up instead of down. It is the story of 2 families, and ultimately 2 mothers. Alternately, it's a tale of obsession and what it can drive a person to do.
I thought the story was good and liked the multiple points of view. I would not really call it suspense or thriller though as there really isn't any mystery as to what is happening now or in the past. I recommend reading the bonus material (if available) - I actually preferred the alternate ending. But overall, an enjoyable, solid story.

I enjoyed the book. The emotions, despair, and grief the characters experienced, you can relate to. There are so many people out there who live the plot out every day that it's scary to think about it. To have your child take away from you without any reason must be hard to live with. If you can handle all the different emotions the characters experience, I recommend that you read the book. I think it's not for every reader out there, but you'll still enjoy reading the book, in any case.

To be a perfect mother or not to be? But which one is it?
This book is hard to put down. The roller coaster ride between the characters is so powerful, from the past to the present. No lies will ever be successful, and as always, secrets will be revealed.
A mother's love is limitless and will do the power to do everything for her son. Dawn never gives up, even after 20 years, her hope to find her son did justice. This story is intense in so many ways. I wanted more of the story. I hope that there is a second book. I want more of the story.

It took me a few chapters to get into the story and I found it easy to put down and walk away. Never at any stage did it turn into a page turner for me. I couldn't understand why Evelyn had to keep involving herself in Dawn's life, it was always going to come back and bite her on the backside.
This isn't a story that I would read again as it finished with too many loose ends.

It didn’t take long for me to see how things stood between Evelyn and Dawn. I did not feel angry with Dawn for what happened. Having Daniel share his fears about who his parents were and how he resolved them helped show how many in his situation might feel. This story was wild, and the author didn’t let me get bored.

This book is filled with drama and suspense. I enjoyed Dawn’s POV, and I felt her grief stemming from the mystery of her missing son. She moves to a new town for a fresh start, but ends up living near her old neighbor, Evelyn. There is more than meets the eye with Evelyn, and the interactions between the two women are definitely entertaining. I had a good sense of where this story was headed, and I liked the alternate ending.

The Perfect Mother by Desiree Moodie is a great psychological thriller. Dawn is looking for a new start 20 years after her son was kidnapped and her marriage fell apart. She meets Evelyn who has twins and a son away at college. This is their story and its a good one that you won't want to miss.

The perfect neighborhood, the perfect family, the perfect crime. A story line filled with suspense that keeps you turning the pages as you can't wait to see what happens next. The characters are strong and well developed and they keep the suspense going. If you love a good, thrilling read then you won't want to let this one pass by.
