All he wants for Christmas is her… even if she’s faking it.
Olivia Gray would do anything for Luke, except let him out of the friend zone. For eleven years, Olivia has worked hard to set boundaries within their friendship to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself. However, her barriers are tested when she joins Luke for their family Christmas celebration and ends up becoming his FAKE girlfriend.
The last thing Luke Beckett wants to do for the holidays is to be around his estranged father, even if it might be their last one together. But when the pressure of his overbearing relatives becomes too much for him, Olivia announces herself as his ‘girlfriend’ in order to take the spotlight off of him. However, Luke sees it as an opportunity to prove they belong together, despite their complicated past.
As the Christmas magic fades, pretend and reality comes face to face, leaving Olivia and Luke wondering what happens when they return to real life. Will Luke escape the friend zone or will this new shift come between them?
India Tungate is an author of sweet, faith-filled, closed door romances. She’s living her own happily ever after in a small town in Kentucky with her husband and two children. She discovered her love for writing at the age of ten and has always dreamed of becoming an author. In 2023, India finally decided to go for it and self published her first book in 2024. She spends her time wearing many hats. Besides writing, India also manages her small homestead, homeschools her children, and runs a photography business. When she has time, you can find her making memories with her loved ones, baking, volunteering at her church, reading a sweet romance book, or re-watching The Office.
Christmas fake dating stories appear to be “in” this year for authors, haha (myself included), and I love it.
Luke and Olivia’s cop x baker pairing was fun—AND THE DESSERTS! I was getting hungry just reading. 🤭
Personal preference here, but I’m not a one bed trope fan, particularly for Christian couples. Even though nothing happens, I just don’t love it, and it was a reoccurring part of this story.
India did an AMAZING job with the forgiveness and redemption themes! So much respect for how she handled hard stuff with grace. The story did feel heavier than your regular light-hearted rom-com—more contemporary romance over comedy—but it worked beautifully for this tale of grace and healing.
And a moment for that cover!!!! 😍😍😍
Content: parental abuse (physical in the past); alcohol addiction (past); making out (more kissy than I personally like)
This was such a sweet and beautiful book! Luke and Olivia were in love with each other since middle school and when they start fake dating in front of his family, Luke feels hope that maybe it’ll finally work out. Luke was a sweetheart🥹 he knows Olivia so well and sees her like nobody else does and it’s the best thing ever! I really enjoyed this book and the themes of forgiveness, grief, and guilt. This book showed me a new outlook on forgiveness and Gods love and grace💖 This was such a great book, I’ll definitely read more by this author 🥰

4⭐️ ARC Review: I had been looking forward to reading Olivia and Luke’s story ever since reading the first book in this series last year, and I was not disappointed! I usually save Christmas books for the winter months, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to ARC read this one. And honestly, it was kind of refreshing to read a Christmas book in July!
First, the improvement in India's writing from her debut to this is insane! Don't get me wrong, l loved her debut, but I can see how far she's come, and my heart is so happy for her success.
Now to the review. This story is a lot more lighthearted than the first book, but it still touches on the serious grief and anger from Luke’s past and the healing journey he goes through. With that said, these characters were so strong and forgiving and I’m just like, I want to be like them! Olivia was the perfect companion for Luke, and I just couldn’t with all of their sweetness.
One thing that got my goat in this book was the 3rd act break up man. Sometimes they make sense, but this time it felt a bit rushed and unrealistic. Yes the reasoning behind it was valid, but it didn't seem like Olivia to feel like that so fast. Whatever. It happened and it's fine and they lived happily ever after! This story was a bit long as well, so it dragged at times, but it was still very sweet and enjoyable.
It is seriously such a cozy and heartwarming story that gives you all the holiday fun vibes too. Ice skating, cookie decorating, ugly sweaters, family gatherings, a Grinch cat, it’s all so good! If you didn’t pick it up in July, I highly suggest you pick it up during Christmas time. The most perfect holiday read.
*Thank you to the author, India Tungate, for the complementary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Read if you enjoy: - Dual POV - Christmas romance - Childhood best friends to lovers - Police officer MMC - Baker FMC - Faith elements - Clean romance - Fake dating - One bed
AHHHH, thank you so much to India for letting me beta read this.
Let me tell you this was EASILY a 5 star read for me. Can I list all the reasons why?! I don't know, but I am going to try.
First of all, our FMC, Olivia, struggles with feeling like not enough/too much ALL at the same time. And all the girlies who related to that can feel so so seen. Olivia also has such a heart. I adore her role in this story.
Luke, my Luke, I related to Luke more than I ever would like to admit. His heart is hard and hurt from an abusive parent. He then has to journey to find out if he is going to forgive. It is so so hard to be in those shoes and to choose to forgive someone who brought you harm. My heart was aching.
Luke + Olivia are DARLING even if they are not the best at *fake* dating. When you're friend is someone you love it's hard to fake things.
STARBURTS. Nothing else. Just starbursts.
Bernie the snowman gets ALL the heart eyes.
The meddling family is everything and made me laugh.
The amazing food references (making me HUNGRY)!
A lovely healing journey for both characters--my heart.
This book is for those who love: ROM COMS, laughing aloud and then crying, closed door romance, faith elements (prayer, faith in God, etc), hilarious elderly neighbors, friends to lovers, and more!
🚨 CONTENT RATINGS / WARNINGS: * Kissing: 18&up * Did not reach French kids description, but felt higher than my 16&up category * Fade-to-black: none * Violence: none (described on page) * There was an abusive father and it was mentioned that he beat his son several times * Assault: none * Abusive father * Kidney failure * Death and on page grief

📝 REVIEW: I have been ready for Luke and Olivia’s story since book one! Their chemistry was evident even as secondary characters, so I was very excited to see it in more depth. I loved how it was easy to tell how much they cared for and understood each other. India did a fantastic job showcasing through actions, as well as dialogue, just how special their bond was. Also, this book does not shy away from hard topics. A main theme seemed to be learning to forgive, and I think it was handled with such wisdom. If you want a book that has all the romance, but also makes you want to be a better Christian, then you should read this one!
**thank you India Tungate for the advanced readers copy (these are my honest thoughts)**
I was so happy to return to Covewood ❤️ Oh how I wish that was a real town I could visit! Luke and Olivia’s story was a beautiful story of love, forgiveness, healing, and moving forward! Allowing love in when we have been hurt or don’t feel like we are worth it. This story made me cry, laugh, kick my feet and gasp out loud. I love a story that makes me feel all the feelings!!
I also loved how Indy included a message in her novel that it’s never too late to be saved by Jesus! No matter how old we are, or how messy our past is, or even if we are on our deathbed. If we repent of our sins and ask Jesus into our hearts - He is happy to have us ❤️ along with that, Jesus can shine is light on the dark messy parts of us. Forgiveness and love can help us heal and move on.
I loved everything about this story! The love, the side characters, the character growth, seeing Raine and Ry again!
If you love the tropes: small town, fake dating, best friends to more, Christmas, healing journey, faith elements, dual POV, grumpy sunshine, cat side characters, hilarious elderly neighbor then this book is for YOU!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Luke & Olivia - Dual POV - Built in playlist - Best friends to fake dating to more - One bed - Christmas with the family - Forgiveness theme - A village of friends and family to love and support them 💕
✨ a few of my favorite things: - the references in the book 👏🏻 - Buttercream 😂 also getting fat & sassy 😉😂 - The epilogue 😭😭 - All the faith that is strengthened over the course of the book / hard trials - THE FLIRTING - The nicknames 🤭 - Their inside jokes and making each other laugh 💕 true best friends
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Book 2 of The Covewood Series - holy chemistry Batman!! Luke and Olivia are so into each other it’s clear even when they are sitting on opposite sides of a room! They have so much fun with one another and truly know each other to their cores. These two best friends were made to be together and they have to fight through so much baggage from the past to get to the HEA.
You know that feeling when an author wraps up a book perfectly and you just feel warm, fuzzy, and satisfied? That’s how India wrapped this book up 👏🏻 this book has strong Christian faith elements, specifically focused on forgiveness. The MCs do forgiveness right and wrong in this book. They are tested multiple times and have to run back to Jesus for strength and guidance. I love that the MCs and side characters are human who fail and have to learn the hard way sometimes (because don’t we all). These aren’t perfect, cookie cutter characters. Luke and Olivia have many insecurities and struggles that get in the way of listening to God or cause more heartache. However, India created a story with so many second chances and real forgiveness. Forgiving others because we have been forgiven, and forgive people A LOT (Matthew 6:14-15 & Colossians 3:13 & Matthew 18:21-22). It’s a beautiful story full of redemption, growth, Jesus, fun, flirting, tension, and Christmas.
This is a clean closed door romcom with faith themes and some innuendo. Author gives content warnings at the beginning of the book.
P.s. this cover is one of my favorites 💕
**Thank you so much to India for letting me read this ARC. I received a complimentary copy. No positive review was required. All thoughts are my own.**
I just finished beta reading The Shift Between Us and it’s so good!! A beautiful story of second chances and forgiveness. Featuring some of my favorite tropes - friends to lovers and fake dating - plus a spunky kitty 🐈 - this sweet and fun book is a perfect Christmas in July read.
I can’t wait to read this again when it releases this summer!
Thank you India Tungate for the opportunity to read Olivia and Luke’s story 💖
These two are best friends even though Luke wants to be more. Olivia has placed him in the friend zone and put specific boundaries in place to keep him there. It has been “working” for 11 years until they go to see his family for Christmas because his dad is sick. Once they arrive they pretend they are dating. That’s when the shift starts to happen.
Luke has overcome a lot throughout his life. You really see his growth whenever he offers forgiveness to his family member. Olivia is scared to let Luke get too close. She cherishes what they have and doesn’t want to risk their friendship - but she really wants to be there for him.
I enjoyed this one. Luke is very sweet and Olivia is such a fun character. I loved all of the faith themes and getting to see more of Ryland & Raine too.
Quotes ✨ “I used to look at my painful past and saw nothing but failure and defeat. But God…He saw it as a victory.”
“Without even trying, you shined your light into all the darkest places of my heart. Our friendship gave me a reason to keep going.”
If there was one moment in my life that I could anchor my soul to, it’s the moment I fell in love with my best friend.
Content ⚠️ No foul language Make-outs (some steamy) Grief
The Shift Between Us is a poignant friends-to-lovers story full of emotional depth and quiet complexity. Luke and Olivia have a shared past marked by buried pain, silent promises, and a long-standing friendship that tiptoes around something more. The story opens with a compelling graduation night and then shifts into years of emotional restraint—until a fake dating scenario at Luke’s family home finally cracks the façade.
What really stood out to me was the raw, honest portrayal of messy lives. From Luke’s difficult relationship with his abusive father to Olivia’s own internal battles, the characters feel layered and real. The slow unraveling of their feelings is almost agonizing at times—the burn is very slow, and while the pacing occasionally felt meandering, the emotional payoff was worth it.
What I loved most was how faith was gently and authentically woven into the story. The message of forgiveness—of others, but also of yourself—was beautifully handled. And the ending delivered in every way, with emotional resolution and a real sense of hope.
If you enjoy character-driven romance with strong emotional arcs, messy families, and deep themes of healing and faith, this one is definitely worth the journey.
I received an ARC of this book and it did not disappoint. This story was so sweet and I loved all of the characters! I loved that there were so many faith elements and that it was closed-door! The characters all were going through real issues that readers can relate to.
It’s set during Christmas time so it would make a great cozy read! Though it was a bit cheesy at times, it was such a feel-good read.
🎄 The vibes: - Friend zone - Christian themes - Buttercream 🐈 - Christmas setting - breaking generational trauma - Closed door
☃️ My thoughts: Luke and Olivia are childhood friends who were thick as thieves growing up. When a kiss and misunderstanding in highschool almost ruins everything, they manage to salvage their friendship and pretend it never happened. The incident may be that which they never speak of, but the sparks never died. When Luke is heading back home for Christmas, Olivia agrees to go with him for support. But things get cozy when she quickly gets sucked into being the fake girlfriend.
🎄 I expected a very light and fluffy Christmas romcom, but this actually had a lot of depth (especially with Luke’s family and everything that he had to get through). Through the heavier parts, the christmas festivities felt like a nice hug in the midst of something that emotionally difficult. The balance of heavy and light really worked for me.
🎄 I really liked the forgiveness arc here. The prayers, the heart change, and the struggle between- I felt like India expressed these themes in a gentle way that hit me. I was angry along with Luke, and seeing the way his heart softened was convicting for me. Even when I didn’t understand firsthand where the characters were coming from, I found their stories very meaningful.
🎄In friends-to-lovers, I can’t think too hard, or I’ll be yelling at them the whole time to just be honest with themselves and eachother if I think too hard. Yes, it’s obvious they like eachother as more than friends. Yes, they should just admit they like eachother, but we’re here to have fun, ok? So if you’re willing to do that here, you’re in for a special read that’s more than just a romance.
🎄 As for the Christmas meter- It took a minute to hit holiday festivities, but once we did, it was THERE. I loved the tree decorating, cookies, movies, lights, ice-skating, and snow!
🎄 Lastly- the Christian themes are very much central in this book. I appreciate that India is willing to go there in a blatant and clear way. India’s books just ooze with heart. I FEEL a lot when I read them and that keeps me coming back for more.
This was my first book by this author, and it won’t be my last. It’s the second book in a series but can be read as a standalone.
Olivia’s a baker- she bakes when she’s stressed, when she’s happy, pretty much all the time. The delightful descriptions of her baked goods made me want some pastries so badly while reading this story.
Luke’s a police officer. He’s cleaned up the town and still struggles with bitterness and hatred for his father, who he ran out of town years before because of his crimes. When his grandmother calls and says the family is all getting together for an early family Christmas he really doesn’t want to go. But Olivia convinces him and says she’ll go with him for support. Except when they get there she accidentally tells his family that they are dating.
They’re best friends. Except they secretly have been in love with each other for years.

This author has a way of taking a story and making something come to life. Her words have deep meaning, and great life lessons. This isn’t just a cutesy romcom that will make you feel good. It’s a deep, emotional experience that leaves you feeling such a connection with her characters that you can’t help but feel like you truly know Luke and Olivia, and wish that Covewood were a real place.
I received an advanced reader’s copy of this book for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Shift Between Us is the second book in the Covewood series. While you might have a better understanding of the history and relationships between all these characters if you've read that first book, I do think you could probably still enjoy this one as a standalone as well.
Raine, Raine Run Away (the first book in this series) was one of my top favorite books of last year, and as such, I was very much looking forward to the follow-up... and I have to say, this one was every bit as wonderful as the first. India once again did such a beautiful job of blending a sweet and swoon-worthy romance, filled with moments that had me smiling... while also packing an emotional punch right along with it... and points to Jesus though it all. This story certainly isn't one that shies away from the hard stuff, with mentions abuse, cancer and alcohol abuse. And yet, it also offers a beautiful message of forgiveness and redemption. I loved seeing the growth and faith of not just Olivia and Luke, but of the side characters as well. It was beautiful and emotional, and I think that struggle to forgive is one that so many are going to be able to relate to. While all of that certainly led to some difficult moments, it was balanced beautifully with those lighter ones to keep it from feeling too heavy. I loved all the music references throughout, and of course, the holiday traditions too. Olivia and Luke had such an amazing chemistry and were terrible at keeping the 'fake' in fake dating... in the best way possible. Theirs was a hard fought happily ever after, and I absolutely loved everything about it.
The Shift Between Us is a Christian closed-door romance with kisses only and no language.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
*ARC REVIEW* This is easily a 5 star review for me! I was part of the beta review of Raine, Raine, Run Away so I was looking forward to book two of the Covewood series.
If you need a wholesome, closed door romance in your book life this is the book for you! This is book two of the Covewood series telling the story of the best friends who deep down love each other more than friends. By the end of chapter one I couldn’t stop laughing out loud on my couch. It is like a Hallmark movie playing in my head that I do not want to turn off. These characters had me yelling at them, crying with them, and laughing until my belly hurt. This book has me even more excited for my favorite holiday, Christmas!
In most contemporary romance novels, I've found that the side characters usually do not play large roles. That's one thing that sets this book apart; the side characters support the book. The dual POV truly captures all the emotions to captivate you in their story.
One of my favorite quote from The Shift Between Us: “It’s hearing each others fears and wants and wishes and deciding that maybe you won’t always understand them completely but you will always be there for each other”- Olivia
if there’s one thing india does well, it’s making you feel all the emotions while reading her stories - and that’s a one way ticket to five stars from me.
the shift between us is a beautiful christmas romance packed full of sweet, swoony moments - along with a few harder topics and a healing journey. your heart will break for them, and you’ll probably shed a few tears along the way. but you’ll also giggle, swoon, and literally laugh out loud.
i loooooved all the characters in this story, including Buttercream the sassy kitty, Bernie the shy snowman, and Edna. oh, Edna. 😂 i need more of her in my life.
Luke and Olivia. ugh. they had my heart from the first in this series - Raine, Raine Run Away. they’re perfect for eachother and i was so glad to get their story in my hands! their friendship, their love - it was heartwarming and so so beautiful.
and the christmas vibes. y’all. it’s everything you want from a christmas romance. snowball fights, ice skating 😅, horse drawn carriages through a beautiful christmas town. 🥰
if you love friends to lovers, fake dating, one bed, closed door - this one’s for you!
✨ ARC Review ✨ This is such a sweet and endearing read! It features some of my absolute favorite tropes—friends to lovers, grumpy/sunshine dynamic, and all wrapped up in a cozy holiday setting.
I appreciated how the author wove in themes of faith, forgiveness, and redemption throughout the story. It felt genuine and added such a meaningful layer to the romance. Plus, the story left me seriously wanting a cat!
I also loved India’s book playlist—authors who create playlists for their stories automatically win me over. It made it so easy to stay connected to the book’s world, even when I wasn’t reading.
If you’re looking for a sweet, second-chance, best-friends-to-lovers Christmas romance with heart and depth, definitely add this one to your TBR!
**Thank you to India Tungate for my ARC copy in exchange for my honest review. **
I had the opportunity to Beta read this book. Let me just say, this book is pure perfection! Christmas in July absolutely!!! The swooning in this book is unreal! I normally am not a fan of friends to lovers but India has a gift! This book had me laughing, falling in love! Balling my eyes out! I fell IN LOVE with Luke’s grandmother! This is a must read! 10/10! I truly loved every moment!
Oh my goodness! This book! It has every feeling imaginable in it! You will laugh, you will swoon, you will cry. India has created an emotional journey for Olivia and Luke filled with sweetness and love:) I absolutely loved every page! A must-read!
Really sweet Christian Romance. Really enjoyed. I loved the chemistry between Olivia and Luke at all stages of this story. Also have quite enjoyed the Spotify play list that goes with it. No spoilers just tropes: ♥️Best friends ❤️Fake dating ❤️One bed ❤️Trauma response 💚Hospice 💚Christmas 💚Cat adoption 💚Small town
I loved this book from beginning to end. I laughed and I definitely cried!!! A friends to lovers and fake dating trope done really well all while intertwining faith in a way I’ve never read before. I really appreciated this book and can’t wait to read more. Thank you for sharing Olivia and Lukes story with us!!
I DNF'd this one. While I love the Christian values put into this, there was too many characters to keep up with and I felt the book was really dragging for me. I felt it was too long of a book for the premise of the story as well.
Olivia and Luke have been the best of friends since middle school. Olivia decides to go with Luke to his grandmother’s house for an early Christmas celebration. There, Olivia makes the fast decision to introduce herself as Luke’s girlfriend. The pair spends the weekend fake dating, but it doesn’t take much taking on either side.
When you avoid your pain, you’ll never be able to heal.
Read if you like:
+ Christian Romance + Second Chance + Fake Dating + Christmas Time
I absolutely love her books. I love how she takes real world issues and incorporates them. I also how love how she incorporates God and a Christian perspective as well!
I adored Luke and Olivia’s love story! I love the cozy Christmas scenes (and WILL be rereading around Christmas time), I love all the nostalgic references, I love the food references (even though I felt like I needed a scone and a cup of hot chocolate while reading), I love Luke’s family dynamic, the sassy, elderly neighbor, the crazy cat, honestly, this book is chock full of things to LOVE!
The heart wrenching journey through forgiveness is so beautifully written. She captures all the feels of hurt, facing the hurt, and choosing forgiveness so well.
She also does a beautiful job of incorporating all the characters we already loved from Raine, Raine Runaway without taking anything away from Luke and Olivia.
Do yourself a favor and preorder The Shift Between Us. You won’t regret it!!
4.25 stars Thank you to the author for allowing me to read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book was very good! I liked that we saw characters from the first book. I loved the character growth throughout. I loved the message of forgiveness. I loved the plot and the tropes! Overall, I had a great time reading this book and I would recommend it! Especially if you’re looking for a clean, Christian romance.
I absolutely adored Luke and Olivia’s love story. It was so sweet, so heartwarming, and full of that perfect Christmas magic that makes you want to go bake something cozy right after. The way this story handled grief was incredibly tender and respectful, it added so much depth without ever feeling heavy. I loved every single moment of this book. It’s the kind of story that wraps around your heart and stays there. This whole series is truly precious.
I loved the characters, the steamy kissing scenes were 🔥 their connection was 🔥 and I loved the depth to this book. You really hit beautifully well on hard topics, which makes this a really good Christian novel. It doesn’t shy away from hardship but invites Jesus into the middle of it. I think it can absolutely be thought provoking for people who have experienced those things. Loved it! Beautiful job ♥️
