This volume comprises seven essays by Hans Dieter Betz dealing with contested passages or issues in Paul's most difficult and personal letter written during his imprisonment in Rome. The chapters represent exegetical investigations and apply the methods of rhetorical and literary criticism, including philological and historical analysis. As a result, Betz is able to offer new proposals for interpreting the apostle's unique last message to his churches. The proposals explore the letter's literary composition, genre and history; furthermore they examine Paul's situation prior to his presumed martyrdom, his expectations for the future and his relation to his churches.

Hans Dieter Betz is a German-American scholar of the New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of Chicago. He has made influential contributions to research on Paul's Letter to the Galatians, the Sermon on the Mount and the Greco-Roman context of Early Christianity.

Ich beschäftige mich gerade intensiver mit der Rezeption des Alten Testaments im Philipperbrief. Deswegen finde ich es sehr bereichernd, einen anderen Zugang zum Philipperbrief als meinen eigenen zu bekommen. Betz sieht mehrheitlich eine griechische Rezeption und Auseinandersetzung bei Paulus. Dies gesagt, finde ich den Ansatz von Betz jedoch schwach. Natürlich kann es möglich sein, dass Paulus hellenistische Autoren gekannt und sich mit ihnen auseinandergesetzt hat, doch Betz setzt dies voraus und bietet kein methodologisches Konstrukt dafür. Er hat einen phänomenologischen Zugang zu den Texten und eine sehr literarkritische Sichtweise, die ich nicht teile. Ja sogar hinderlich für seine Untersuchungen sehe.
