Nelle Harper Lee was an American novelist whose 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and became a classic of modern American literature. She assisted her close friend Truman Capote in his research for the book In Cold Blood (1966). Her second and final novel, Go Set a Watchman, was an earlier draft of Mockingbird, set at a later date, that was published in July 2015 as a sequel.
The plot and characters of To Kill a Mockingbird are loosely based on Lee's observations of her family and neighbors in Monroeville, Alabama, as well as a childhood event that occurred near her hometown in 1936. The novel deals with racist attitudes, the irrationality of adult attitudes towards race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s, as depicted through the eyes of two children.
Lee received numerous accolades and honorary degrees, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007, which was awarded for her contribution to literature.

This book was so simple in its execution yet it was so good that I now wholeheartedly understand exactly why so many english teachers worship it.

Stories with children as the narrator can become tedious rather quickly for an older reader, but here I'd say that Scout's innocence and childishness is greatly utilized in a way that never gets repetetive or boring. Scout behaves exactly like a kid, she's neither too stupid or too smart. She understand some issues but struggles with others and only later once she gains more maturity she comes to understand them as well.

Truly I haven't anticipated how well "To Kill a Mockingbird" would handle societal problems. Racism, adolescence, feminity, morality, prejudice - all those complex matters seen through the eyes of a child but somehow didn't feel shallow. I've seen some upset reviews about how this book is supposed to be THE racism book of US and in my opinion if you go into this story with that mindset, there's not wonder you're disappointed. Primary this book is about gaining maturity and realising the complicated nature of the world, it isn't mainly about racism, only one of its plots is heavily focused on that topic. Scout although a lovely narrator, does NOT provide the reader with a black perspective. There is acknowledgement that black people aren't any worse than white members of society, but it will never offer a commentary that'll put black people and their struggles first and honestly there's nothing wrong with that because as I've mentioned before - this book isn't mainly about racism!
